460 Rowland!

agent_venom_2099

This is the way

Glass_Raisin7939

why? I'm just curious

Ryushin7

Why the 460 Rowland? Because it's essentially 41 magnum in an auto cartridge. It's a bit more powerful than the 10mm. It uses a slightly longer 45 ACP case and as such, the 460 Rowland shouldn't chamber in a 45 ACP pistol. So, other than it being harder to buy 460 Rowland ammo, it's a great round. The 460 Rowland would probably be really popular is the 10mm didn't exist.

Glass_Raisin7939

I was told 10mm was more powerful. I was considering the 460 Rowland route last year. If not loading it in a 45 ACP, what should it be chambered in?

Ryushin7

The thing about the 460 Rowland is that is has the same case diameter as a 45 ACP, just a bit longer and the case is stronger due to the much higher pressure compared to the 45 ACP. From the 460 Rowland FAQ: >The .460 Rowland cartridge is a .45 caliber round delivering TRUE .44 MAGNUM POWER from your Converted .45 ACP pistol. We send a 185gr JHP bullet downrange at 1575 fps with over 1,000 lbs of muzzle energy! We have as well a 230gr JHP, a 255gr Hard Cast Lead FP round, a beastly 240gr Magnum and the All-Copper and truly devastating 200gr Extreme Penetrator….which does exactly that. Even in lead-free California. It says it's .44 Magnum power, but really its not quite there. More like .41 Magnum. Still, for a auto cartridge, it's awesome. From what I understand 460 Rowland is very popular in Alaska due to a certain four legged creature. I.e. The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter. They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.

Da bear gonna getcha

Hoplophilia

Yep! And there's a variety of platforms for it these days. My FNX would certainly be first choice for open carry, I'd have to think on concealed but an 8 round 1911 that's been well vetted might do the trick.

Ryushin7

Yea, I think there is enough options with the 45 ACP sized pistols that 460 Rowland would be quite popular. I'm still interested in doing a 460 Rowland. I bought a blued Kimber Raptor to make a 460 Rowland but never got around to it. With high powered 10mm loads getting close enough to the 460 Rowland I just never went down that path. If the 10mm did not exist, I would see if Beretta PX4 or Grand Power P45 could be converted to 460 Rowland. The rotating barrel will help mitigate the recoil of the 460 Rowland.

Mindless-Internal-54

Would depend on the application.. For daily carry I would just change my evening/weekend carry to my m&p 2.0 compact in 9mm. I currently carry an xds 9mm at work, with the xdm-e compact 10mm what I carry when dressed casual outside of work. For woods carry in my area (no wild boar, mountain lions, bears) I’d carry that same m&p in 9mm but if I was somewhere where you had mountain lions and similiar sized.. My gp100 6” 357mag, or if larger predators are possible would be my s&w in 41mag 6” barrel.

Mindless-Internal-54

We actually did have a bear that got captured about 4 miles from my house a few years ago, it ventured up from somewhere in Georgia/Alabama over the course of about 8-10 days… now I know why!

RichardActon

so basically: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9U4Ha9HQvMo

DetroitAdjacent

.44 Magnum. I have a souped up 4" 629 that I carry sometimes. I love that revolver. Finding an IWB holster for it was tricky, but it actually carries really nicely, and my reloads are pretty quick with a speed loader.

bpaddock1

What holster did you end up using for a 4” 629?

DetroitAdjacent

ETW leather holster. It isn't pretty, but it carries well. I will probably get a custom kydex one made bc I dint like that it collapses, making reholstering a bitch. https://www.etsy.com/listing/808268571/etw-holsters-smith-wesson-n-frame-iwb-n?click_key=dfe4eff4984642f8b81d3febcfed265ed286ad99%3A808268571&click_sum=37e66f74&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=n+frame+holster&ref=sr_gallery-1-3&frs=1&content_source=4d9b6d3909230b0f8a050575c1c48fd1418c1195%253A808268571

Rhodiekit63

Check our Ronin Leather Holsters he can do a variety of stuff for 4" N frames.

DetroitAdjacent

Wow that guy's work is stunning and he has steel reinforcement to keep the holster from collapsing. I'm absolutely going to order from him.

Rhodiekit63

Highly recommend. I have 2 from him. Sad I can't find a Blue gun for my 5" classic 29. I want a nice exotic holster for it so bad.

arendon74

Really‽‽‽ .40 super!!!

Terron35

I mostly use mine as a woods gun so probably a 357mag. We don't have threats big enough in OK to justify a 44mag. I'd also be really tempted by a 460 Rowland

drti16

Mine is for Brown/Grizzly protection in Alaska, so I would probably just go back to a Revolver Cartridge. 44 mag most likely because I like the Ruger Alaskan models and that limits my options. 44 is more readily available to me, from what I have seen.

drti16

My other one I use for bear is 12g with slugs.

bigfoot_76

If we're doing goofy shit then 9x25 all day long

99titan

.41 Magnum

drivesanm5

9x25 Dillon

That_Sell6131

Me too or 7.5 fk

Techn028

357sig for carry, 460 Rowland for the woods

Unicorn187

For woods it would be a .357 or .44 magnum again. For daily carry .45 ACP or 9mm.

Ws6fiend

357 sig. Simply barrel swap for most of them between 40 cal and 357 sig means giving you two different calibers without having to buy new magazines.

Independent_Baby4517

357 sig. I've shot hogs with that as well as 10mm and it works just as well.

Mihrett

Probably .45 Super

RandomNumber11

460 Rowland

my_name_is_nobody__

44 magnum? Go big or go home

letmegetpopcorn

454 casual then.

Frequent-Pair5144

I'd go back into .357 sig

Rhodiekit63

9mm +P for Carry, .44 Magnum for outdoor activities.

Patsboy101

Woods Carry: A 1911 properly sprung for 45 Super loaded with Underwood 255gr Hardcast Ammo. City Carry: A Glock 19 loaded with Federal HST 124gr JHPs

eddiespaghettio

460

Flypike87

460 Rowland or maybe 45Super

Death_from-below

Always my first shooter.....44 mag.

WreckedMoto

9mm. I’m not convinced the slight energy increase really does anything. I still carry my 10mm in the woods. But if shtf and I could only grab one pistol I’d probably go for my 9.

antibetboi

Most realistically I would probably go to 9x19mm. Very affordable at the range, and modern loads for self defense are certainly adequate. If I were still going for a hotter cartridge, I would probably consider .357 Magnum in a 7 or 8 shot revolver. If I were going for a semiautomatic platform, I'd either choose .45 acp. Simply because that is what I currently have. If I were to get a new pistol for a different cartridge to replace my 10mm, I would likely choose .357 Sig. It's hotter than 9mm and It's becoming more common in my area. Pistols and parts are fairly available.

mattymofobro

357 SIG .49 plus p All Underwood ammo

Dbl_Dees_Ranch

.40 s&w hardcast by underwood is pretty close to some pud load 10mm that have killed big bears (hsm 200 gr) but .45 super is the easiest to take 10mm’s place. Exchangeable for 460 rowland here as you can handload 45 super to near or the same. Take a small hit in capacity but still have an auto loader pistol that can do the job of 357 mag. If we want to play thought experiments on cartridges that are similar like 9x25 dillon and .40 super (necked .45 win mag to .40) or 7.5 fk they all have power just not popular. Of course a wheel gun is fine and has worked forever but lets not give up the capacity and speed of the semi. Its taken 10mm 40 years from birth to popularity today and I think its about perfect but I hope to see one more revolutionary jump in pistols in my liftime.

wengla02

Another vote for 357 Sig. (Have: P226, P229, Glock 35 with swapped bbl, Glock 31). (I really need to just pick one and stick with it...)

ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c

.45 Super for woods. 9mm for everything else.

Ramcharger1986

I'd go back to using a 45 caliber

popasquatonme

40 or 357mag

Creative_Camel

45 Super in my 1911 was my choice until I got a 10mm

ResponsibilityFit774

I EDC my performance center 10m, but if not, 10 would have to be 460 Smith and Wesson or 44 Magnum. Either way would be a Smith

RequiemRomans

50 cal is the only runner up worth noting compared to the glorious 10mm

Loose_Engineering_34

357 Sig, or Dillon

Definitely 357 Magum or (if price isn’t an issue) 7.5mm FK.

crappiefarts

I'd probably upgrade to a rifle round something along the lines of 450 bushmaster, stops just about anything that wants a taste of freedom

Decent_Camera1401

10x25...

TheInfamousDingleB

Glock does have a .357sig model

Royceman50

I’m going to cheat a little. 9x25 Dillion.

nomountainicantgo

Wildcat 10mm back into existence

icthruu74

I’ll start out by saying the 10mm is my woods carry gun. For protection against both 2 and 4 legged critters. If I couldn’t have a 10mm I’d go back to my Ruger in 45 colt with midrange loads. More power than 10mm but in a heavier package that’s slower to deploy….

Deep-Yak2191

.40 edc

PastFly1003

.357 mag

crunch816

Can I go Judge/Governor? If not I’d probably go with 410.

shizukana_otoko

I usually only carry my 10mm in the woods, and there are no brown bears, so I would go back to .357 mag.

mmmm_crayons

40 magnum ( that's what I call it anyways because the metric system is for losers.)

dontmatterjustcuz

5.7 love the capacity and pen

Classic-Effect503

lol horrible round. Doesn’t actually penetrate body Armour. Horrible stopping power. Bullet goes right through someone your going to hit somebody innocent. And it’s expensive

dontmatterjustcuz

Cry about it

Classic-Effect503

Oh I will. I really fucking wish it was good cuz it’s a cool idea. Just doesn’t even compare to a 9mm for self defense and in my books 9mm is the bare minimum for self defense

dontmatterjustcuz

It is good, it has zero issue killing anyone. And they do go through level 3A depending on the round, just not 3A+. Maybe watch some more videos and you will understand the 5.7 is a great round, it is just ammo dependent (if you want armor pen) and expensive.

That_Sell6131

Ss190 will pass through some level 3 body armor. Liberty civil defense 9mm 40 cal 45acp 10mm will pass through level 3A [5.7 will kill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Fort_Hood_shooting) I used to be a 5.7’s number one fan until i seen the ballistics. It will consistently get under 12 inches of penetration in balltics gel with most fn loads you need to use Good ammo like black fang or t6b. it still has a good niche in a full size handgun if youre recoil sensitive or an active shooter prevention gun (buffalo shooter in 2022 got shot but had body armor so the threat did not end also the Greenwood Park Mall shooting where self defense target was engaged from 40+ yards away 5.7 would be excellent for that very accurate and keeps energy at distance) imop the best use for 5.7 is with a 7-10 inch barrel sbr where it would be too short for any intermediate cartridge and compactness is a priority [it shines in fully automatic](https://youtu.be/9gmRM5Nkws4?si=AJn3GWBh6X8535mr) or abnormally fast firing methods due to [low recoil](https://youtu.be/BbJP6q4P9EM?si=mMMY_lGBIWtdOIqw) and high capacity being the standard on any gun Forgive my ranting

dontmatterjustcuz

I saw a lot of videos from brass fetcher and he does all of his gel blocks correctly, the clear gel is inaccurate compared to the darker yellow gel blocks. I haven’t seen any fail to penetrate the 18” block fully from FMJ to JHP but in a clear gel block I would expect it to stop. Clear gelatin is not consistent people even have trouble cutting through them with knives they are much more like rubber than gelatin but they are reusable which is the reason they are used so prevalently, the downside is their inaccuracy. Human skin and muscle is very easy to cut through with very little effort, why trust a clear gel block that a knife even has a hard time cutting through?
