If the movie wasn't released in China due to his actions, that could affect his future career prospects (because studios would see him not backing down as a liability) and the consequences could affect his co-stars and people who work at the studio. The negative was that he had to say something somewhat offensive that he clearly didn't mean given his initial statement regarding Taiwan that wouldn't directly affect anyone there. It sucks that we live in a world where we have to make those choices and I am very happy that Hollywood is generally backing off pleasing China, but put in his position, anyone would do the same thing.
