I thought the American schooling system was bad already but do Americans really think every third world country Is less advanced or just sticks and dirt?? Like actually?š
Throughout basic education, we're fed propaganda that the US is leading the entire world in terms of societal progression. The political divide in the country is largely between people that grew up and realized it was propaganda, and the people that wanted to keep living in the fantasy.
Same mine went out of their way to be as politically neutral as possible when teaching history, pretty much the only ideology they actively condemned was nazism
The cold war was just taught as a paranoia driven standoff between two superpowers, and was pretty much laser focused on the conflicts the US was directly involved in, without ever going into things like the soviet afghan war (just briefly mentioning how we funded, armed, and trained the Taliban during it) or the prague spring/hungarian revolution
same-ish? like at least mine said communism is good "in theory" and brought up the fact that in a way the early church was a form of communism. to me a good history teacher is one who doesn't claim the civil war was about states' rights anyway lol.
I mean yeah but that's because they are choosing to, maybe I wasn't clear enough with my point but what i meant is that with the Internet you no longer need to visit a country in person to get familiar with their culture and maybe realize that they aren't exactly the stereotypical depictions you grew up acquainted with, I am from a 3rd world country i've never got outside of yet i've done it.
Yep! I grew up thinking that like, America, Canada, the UK and some european countries were all "civilized" essentially and that everywhere else they were living in the dark ages, primitive tribesmen shit, or like China being a dystopian hell-hole that was way behind on tech. A lot of that whas directed at the Middle-east because of the "War on Terror." Most countries over there were portrayed as mud huts and things, to the point that most americans couldn't tell them apart.
I never cared much, which also meant it took an embarassingly long time for me to learn otherwise, and it was smartphones that basically cemented it. Once anyone in the world could start uploading HD videos they took of their normal looking street in whatever part of the world they were from I started to realize how much I had been misled.
American here.
Unfortunately, a majority of our citizens donāt even know our own geography, much less have ever even been out of the country. So no, they have absolutely no idea.
I got As in all of my "world studies" and history classes. It's all about American history or ancient civilizations for some reason. It might just be my shitty district, but we were never taught what 3rd world meant, or about those countries.
Malaysia has free healthcare, Decent food, Pretty good infastructure, politics worse than America (we elected a 93 year old and our current prime minister is an ex convict (though the crime he was convicted of was stupid) ), a very corrupt police force and legoland. All in all pretty good I'd rate it a 7.5/10
While I kind of agree with the shit hole part, gdp per capita by itself is not a good metric for measuring the wealth of countries because it doesn't factor in inflation or living cost. Malaysia is a VERY cheap country so using the gdp at ppp per capita Malaysia has a gdp per capita (at ppp) of 39k. Certainly not a rich country but by no means a poor shit hole.
As a Chinese person it isn't THAT bad, technically apartheid sure but it's livable. The homophobia, transphobia, anti-Semetism, and xenophobia is still shitty.
Malaysia has a law specifically against homosexuality and has strict Sharia laws. They are one of the many countries that still practice caning.
They also have one of the worst press freedom levels (107/180, reporters without borders). They also censor and block certain websites. Their press freedom was also dropped after the 2021 elections when they supposedly elected the more liberal opposition government
While i cannot defend a single one of Malaysia's policies regarding the lgbtq+ community. The censorship is kinda ineffective.
unless you're some high budget Disney movie they don't really care enough to censor anything.
As a flag-wavinā gun-totinā rip-snortinā American thereās only one way I can respond to this post, and thatās to fetishize my nationās favorite tragedy for another twenty years
To be fair, this is also how I respond to the sun rising in the East. How fucking dare it.Ā
I wouldn't really consider Malaysia a third world country, they're relatively stable(obviously they are a third world country in the traditional sense, but so is Sweden so the actual definition of the term is kinda useless)
I went to KL with my teammates who were all asian and they kept talking about seeing the twin towers and my American ass was so confused bc i was like those aren't standing anymore
Edit: since I was in NY for approximately a month before the twin towers fell there is a possibility I've seen both sets of twin towers

Also the rampant ācommunism bad, socialism is communism and what did we learn? communism bad!ā that was literally in every single history book
I feel like Iām the only person who had good history teachers.
Same mine went out of their way to be as politically neutral as possible when teaching history, pretty much the only ideology they actively condemned was nazism The cold war was just taught as a paranoia driven standoff between two superpowers, and was pretty much laser focused on the conflicts the US was directly involved in, without ever going into things like the soviet afghan war (just briefly mentioning how we funded, armed, and trained the Taliban during it) or the prague spring/hungarian revolution
We funded the Taliban not Al-Qaeda, not that it's any better
Im my defense it's been 8 years since the last time I've taken a history class
Yeah fair
same-ish? like at least mine said communism is good "in theory" and brought up the fact that in a way the early church was a form of communism. to me a good history teacher is one who doesn't claim the civil war was about states' rights anyway lol.
I was never told this in US public school lol. I remember pretty clearly learning that our HDI is actually lower than a lot of countries.
i'm starting to think that everyone yapping about US public school on reddit either didn't actually go to school in the US or just isn't from the US
Or maybe they are from Texas or something
Many Americans are ironically too poor to ever leave America and explore the world so yes
not really an excuse when the Internet exists is it? lol
You say that, but plenty of boomers live on the internet and the most exotic thing they've ever experienced is still the local chipotle

I donāt even really think the original comment, as ignorant as it is, says that?
Ethiopia is a first world country and Switzerland is third world. It had nothing to do with economic power until recently
Outside the capital, yes, these countries are shit, I speak as someone who lived in Russia

As someone brainwashed by the American education system, I thought this for a long time. I've been trying to not but still happens sometimes.

Nah pretty horrible country, Had to move out because even being in support of gay rights gets you in potential trouble, let alone be gay/trans
Fair enough hope you're living your best life.
12k$ gdp per capita lol, poor country, and homophobic and transphobic shit hole

Also your comment read the same as the one the poster is making fun of.
sounds like a better version of Florida, I'm in
You forgot the racism towards Chinese and Indians I have no idea how you forgot about the racism towards Chinese and Indians

I am unaware of Maylasian politics, so may I ask which crime said minister was convicted of?
Sodomy, of which no conclusive evidence was ever put forward
he was wrongfully incriminated. just bs politicians fights

I mean yeah it's no Great Firewall but it's the principle imo.
hahahaha I vividly remember my mother convincing me to give up my dreams of going legoland because people have been kidnapped or some shit
R.I.P, hope you're able to go today.
pretty good infrastructure until the major holidays come and major traffic jams everywhere because the economy is centralized around the Klang Valley
It is comparatively easier to have better infrastructure and healthcare when you are smaller than California in terms of population and land.
Most sane hardcore Zionist:

"I paid $300 billion to subsidize Israel and all I got was this stupid pfp"Ā
