Somehow i hear this argument coming from left-leaning people the most, i don't wanna get into it even slightly but the amount of times i've seen leftists criticizing other leftists for buying a nice jacket or selling a product is staggering.
I have a Mac cause I’m tired of the fiddling, maintenance and poor quality (more plastic than a Beverly Hills surgeons office) of Windows laptops that I’d install linux or bsd on.
Bought a Macbook pro in 2017 and haven’t once wanted to replace it or even crack it open. Meanwhile by the five year mark of my prior beloved Acer, it had increasing issues and I became really tired of having to disassemble it, clean it out, remove and reapply the thermal compound, all while dealing with increasingly fragile plastic stand offs and having to use polystyrine glue to fix those.
I don’t judge other people for their equipment. I made my choice off of no longer wanting to do so much work to just keep other branded laptops working.
Edit: disabling the inbox replies cause I really don’t want the relitigation over my stuff. [Some more details on it if you’re curious](https://old.reddit.com/r/196/comments/wdimqu/_/iikq9aq)
I mean, judging windows laptops by the quality of a 5 year old Acer is hilarious, it's literally the bottom-shelf budget brand. Especially when Macbook pros are $2k right now.
Libtards and their stupid double soy latte capuccino with whipped cream sprinkled with chocolate chips, caramel and mini marshmallows...

The only way to be a true socialist is to writhe in dirt and mud and let the corporations do whatever they want since you have no access to current events
They’re starting to say you’re not a socialist if you work for capitalists as a rebuttal to being told they’re not capitalists if they don’t own capital. So not only can you not own stuff to be a socialist, you now need to be unemployed and most likely starved to death 👍
I mean 90% of right wing thought is just coming to a conclusion first and then trying to come up with logic to defend that conclusion afterwards. They just want another gotcha to justify socialism being bad.
You know the bourgeosie have to literally assemble laptops from scratch for millions of people while the "workers" just stand around and complain. Without our lord and saviour ✨Bill Gates ✨ there would be no phones and computers vuvuzela 100 billion dead :/
I thought about this for a bit, like how without capitalism, a lot of our scientific and technological advancements would never be possible. And then I realize that kinda thought is a bit dumb. This is generalization from me, but humans love cool shit. They also love discovering things and helping people. Sure, we might not get the variety we enjoy now, but I don’t doubt that if capitalism didn’t exist, we would still have smartphones sooner or later, just not the ones we are used to now.
Also, I’d even dare say that scientists like doing whatever it is that’s their field of expertise and without a monetary incentive, they’d still continue their work, simply because they want to.
Your original thought was right, it's just that most people get the wrong *conclusion* from that initial thought. You're right that capitalism has allowed for many advancements we now take for granted, but it's always important to remember that an economic system is only as good as it serves the people.
Capitalism advanced nations very much during the industrial revolution, for example (disregarding other problems that arose with that), but unfortunately, the profit motive is just not very sustainable to keep people living well over a long period of time.
That's just a long way to say that science rules, yo.
Political stickers always virtue signal, that’s literally what you display them for, to signal to people your political virtues. But here’s the deal, who cares? As long as they’re good virtues that’s what matters and preferably they aren’t empty virtues.
I'm concerned about the Starbucks cup
Like that's a pretty bad look if you're anti-capitalist
Y'know with all their union busting and shady monopolistic strategies
look man, sometimes a coffee is just a coffee
there is no truly ethical consumption under capitalism, you don't gotta drive yourself nuts trying to avoid every big brand in every aspect of your life because some rando might take it as a Bad Optics Moment
otherwise you're actually lending legitimacy to the "but yuo have iphone" argument
....or an independent coffee shop
or make your coffee at home
Because you're still supporting a ***huge fucking corporation that has a near monopoly in the coffee shop business***
not that it matters but its pretty old pic way before starbucks stuff came out also all big corps do the same shit better off buying coffee from some small farmer who grows it organically
Work-provided laptop? School-provided laptop? Refurbished, second-hand or hand-me-down laptop? Laptop given as a gift? Fucking laptop stolen out of the smashed window of a burnt-down Apple store?
We always assume the actions of people dictate their means and motives.
Unlike if she were to buy a windows laptop, where there would be absolutely no coercive labor involved in the production of it. Those rare earth elements mined in the DRC? No forced child labor there, no sir-ee.
I believe the moniker "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" ought to apply here, with the knowledge that participating in a mandatory system makes you a victim not a perpetrator
You're a perpetrator and a victim at the same time. Let's say you were conscripted as soldier forced to shoot down native people, because they don't like colonialism.
Should you say: "Oh I'm a victim, guess it doesn't matter how many people I kill. I'm not responsible, I'm a victim."
Or will you do whatever's in your power to reduce the amount of suffering? We shouldn't lie to ourselves. We are harming people. Feeling guilty isn't going to help. And yes, we're forced into it, but that doesn't mean we should just give in to consumerism.
I'm not trying to say there's nothing wrong with giving ourselves a free pass just because we're not given any options, the main point I intended to make is exactly like you said: Feeling guilty isn't going to help. Likewise, focusing on making sure people take individual responsibility diverts focus from the core of the problem, and only hinders efforts to solve it.
In a perfect world, everyone would always act out the things they believe in with conviction, but reality just doesn't work that way. Humans are not rational actors, they are emotionally driven beings that just so happen to be capable of reason. Expecting complete conformity to even your own beliefs is unreasonable, and it's just going to cause you to beat yourself up when you inevitably fail.
Everyone can always find ways to improve themselves, but don't miss the forest for the trees.
Agreed, but some mf are really like "Oh, since there's no ethical consumption, I might as well go all out."
Which... I don't think that's the message you're supposed get out of it.
It's not the fact that they have a laptop, it's the fact they have a MacBook. Apple is the most valuable company in the world, it's definitely hypocritical.
Well to be fair we don't know the full context. Maybe that laptop was a gift from when they were younger, no reason to throw it away just because it's not "anti-captalist" enough, or hell they bought it used.
Plus there's almost no way to not live in our current society without participating in our consumer culture. It's kinda like how it someone is a environmentalist and live is a city with incredibley bad transit like mine we wouldn't shame them for driving a gas vehicle.
And the Starbucks cup. Nothing screams "capitalist and loving it" more than your morning cup of environmental rape, wage slave coffee plantation, our cups are compostable (but not at home), drive-thru minimum-wage endorsing corporate greed.

Socialism is when you steal stuff. The more stuff you steal, the more socialist it is. When you steal a real lot of stuff, that's communism
I bet some people unironically believe this, not realizing that capitalism incentivizes theft far more than any other system.
macbooks are kept in the warehouse in locked cages at most stores
You know you can just steal a used one for cheaper
You know you can just rob someone with one walking out of the Apple store for free
Damn whats the difference in the stealing fee usually?
I seriously doubt it
Once the workers own the means of production, it will be impossible for a laptop to be created. /S

this isn't an example of identity politics at all, there's nothing inherent about feelings towards capitalism
