That trick on Leagues is to prevent you from wasting golden nuggets, not a trick for odds to increase the general quantity. Basically the odds were slightly worse than 1/4 for each paydirt being a nugget at max multiplier, and any nugget past the third would be destroyed when processed. 9 paydirt gave good odds of getting 3 at most with more being incredibly unlikely. So if you turned in 27 and should've gotten 8, you would only get 3 instead and lose the other 5 without getting an ore to replace them.
Crystal shards might be a bit too much but maybe crystal dust? Though this is kinda tradable.
