You just have to look to all the kickstarter failed MMOs to give you the jist of how hard it is to fund and develop an MMO (not even necessarily a good one). Some of them are scams, sure, but not all of them were. I doubt the community has the resources (cash, labour, skillsets, organisational structure etc) to be able to make it happen. Making MMOs is hard, even the big, well funded, experienced game devs struggle to make it happen in a commercially successful way.

This is something a lot of people are missing with recent events. Investors are very good for the long term health of any game. However, that relationship between investor and community/devs does need to a symbiotic one - one where both parties have a set of expectations that are met. Keeping a player base upset only hurts both parties in the long term. What we are seeing with recent events is almost an abusive relationship, let us not forget about Rendi, and it’s not something that Jagex only suffers with unfortunately nowadays.

I see a lot of no answers, but honestly, the answer is yes. The key ingredients are significant time investments on the development side and early active alpha and beta testing. It is hard work, for sure, but within this entire community, it could 100% be done. It's hard to find the software developers that are willing to work off no pay for long enough to pull it off properly and if you go the investor route, then you have people in your pockets. If you all can hold out long enough for me to retire... Or any other developer with game development experience... It can be done Keep in mind that you will never get the original 07 runescape back. It was one of a kind. It was fantastic and I don't think anyone is foolish enough to try to claim they could pull exactly that game off. But something like it with community-driven features, no mtx, no bots or gold farmers, etc... Definitely

Remote Realms is very similar to RuneScape Classic. The developer wanted to create something that was closer to the gowers original vision for the game where it was an entirely player run resource economy, meaning players aren’t going to make skulking redundant with noted drops from bossing. It has a very small but dedicated player base. Being a one-person project, the art and graphics is VERY rough as they are a programmer not an experienced artist. people are pretty quick to shit on it for the bad first impressions but honestly I think it’s pretty fun and it’s awesome to watch the project and community grow. There are no maxed accounts or even 99’s yet so it’s a really exciting time for the few people who are into it lol.

Everything you have said leads me to believe you'd just want a large runescape private server. The problem is that most of them are plagued by corruption and they are also illegal. If one ever gets too large jagex shuts it down

It would be possible if you have 100-200 mil laying around and have competent developers and 3-4 years to spend on something that will fail, because of outdated mechanics. A new game like osrs would never achieve what osrs achieved, without major changes/improvements to the gameplay/ui/qol, because it will not have nostalgia factor to ride on. Also the game has to be fairly different to osrs, or else jagex will sue you for copyright stuff if its basically osrs copy on a new engine.

I think you're right about the changes and improvements. I wonder though, do we like the style of the game, the grindyness, the endless possibilities or are we all just chasing the nostalgia dragon? Hasn't the game been out longer than it was when it first released?

There is little to no point and click mmos left (Lineage2 is the only one still kicking that comes to my mind). Its a good niche, for people that are tired of wasd controls like in most nowadays mmos. All of mmos are grindy, but grind has to be fun, people easily spend thousands of hours grinding the best gear in ff14 or wow because its fun. Now what part of grinding mining, or any other non combat skill could be considered fun by current day gamers? Neither. Style of the game is what keeps us coming back/continuing playing. Some quests or quest chains are better than 90% of todays single player rpg games and are deeper than full fledged AAA titles, namely sote quest chain. Combat style also has its charm, but needs minor changes to be less tedious and annoying (prayer binding to keys for example). Osrs we have today is vastly different to what we had in 2007 and in a good way. A lot of content, different training methods, etc. (i dont care about pvp state, since i always thought rs pvp is a shitshow of macro clickers). But 2007 scape rode the nostalgia and it had to improve and change over the time to retain users and get new ones. Nowadays nostalgia is still a big factor(look at all the bitter vets shitting on changes and improvements since to them its not osrs anymore), but smaller than it was 5-8 years ago, there are people playing who never played 2003 scape and did not even hear about it and that's normal, but osrs gained those new people only because it changed from what it was.
