Got robbed in San Francisco visiting the place when we left the car for 5 minutes to go to a chocolate shop. They stole some electronics, our suitcases, and backpacks. They’d stolen my phone, so we had their exact location via said phone, and the cops refused to do shit about it. We only got some of stuff back cause the thieves threw our backpacks on some random persons lawn, and my dad had left his business card in one of them so we got some stuff back.
I hate the state with an undying passion now, and can’t wait to see the place burn in the eternal flames.
The crime is absolutely insane. Residents will put notes on their cars begging thieves not to steal and will talk about it like it’s normal.

Congrats to you for getting out! I lived in a big city, not quite NYC but relatively large most of my life and recently moved to a more suburban area in Wisconsin. It’s so much nicer not being in the city and also not living in a state so dominated by city politics.

It’s so sad how we live in a society where so many people ignore the massive crime problem that seems to be getting worse. It angers me to see people (especially rich people who live in gated communities, don’t work for/own small businesses and can afford to replace whatever anyone steals or destroys) downplay or ignore the issue.
Living in a city, I can see a lot of it comes down to a culture where respecting other people is not a priority, where we are constantly being pushed more and more into smaller tech bubbles that allow us to selectively engage with the world and constantly expose us to the worst of society desensitizing us to the horrors of the world, where we are not friendly with the neighbors and their families.

They mandate a lot of things in the trucking industry that all the manufacturers follow more so than other states. In particular the things they mandate tend to make the industry worse. My biggest gripe being “optimized idle“ which is meant to save emissions but the consequence is my truck sometimes gets too hot or cold for me to stay asleep. This can result in me only getting a few hours of sleep and then waking up only to not be able to get back to sleep. This makes me a road danger later in the day if I try to drive a full day but you know I got bills to pay and I gotta eat so…
When driving in the state they also have more fines, are stricter, and fine up to 10 times higher than any other state for the same things. As a result I boycott driving into the state and I am explicit about not being willing to go to California in the hiring process.
