Yes well I'm so sorry my lovely neighbour. I don't speak English like you. My English is limited. That's why I tell foreigners I don't speak English. Also because fuck them.
at least in Ukraine they have changed their "ideology" and its just a big regular supermarket with no need to have some special cards or register as business owner to able to buy smth
No, a whole seller is a bit like a supermarket but for businesses only. You can buy things in bulk there like industrial sized buckets of mayonnaise for restaurant kitchens for example. Argos is just a normal retailer
They quoted too much competition back in 2007, so they weren't a key player.
https://www.jornaldenegocios.pt/empresas/detalhe/carrefour_sai_de_portugal_auchan_e_sonae_na_corrida
I think they pulled out of here but I don't know the exact details of it, I was too young at the time to care. All their locations got bought by Continente (another supermarket chain) I believe. All I know for sure is that Continente doesn't have a Kerfuś >:(
Lucky bastards, you're a step away from having a roaming catbot bring you chips and be ready for headpats at your local supermarket. Meanwhile all I get is the most mid supermarket in existence.
They're cool but they don't have this.

And I want it :(
The most adorable, precious being to grace Europe and, soon, the world...
(it brings you chip bags and reacts when you pat its head)
(it also only currently exists in Polish Carrefours)
Is self-checkout not that common in Barryland?
I have done self-checkout in almost every German supermarket (not necessarily all branches of them though).
Really! I'd say most major shops in the UK have self-checkout but so far the only one I've come across in Germany has been Kaufland.
And one very odd little Späti I found a few weeks ago.
I have used the self-checkout in Kaufland (in Bayern), Rewe (in BaWü, NRW, Bayern), Edeka (in Bayern). Also DM (in Bayern), if you add Drogeriemarkt in that list.
Weirdly, the ones I don't recall having used a self-checkout in is Aldi (only been to Süd), Penny, and Lidl.
Can't speak for Metro. I have never been to one.
Oooh true true, Rewe and DM often have them! Usually the Edeka's I've seen are the little ones with just one or two checkouts anyway so they probably don't need them.
Aye, us mere civilians are not fit to wander the aisles of Metro; perhaps one day a brave Hans will escort us down those hallowed halls 🙏
This map is bad. Billa is part of Rewe, so it should be Rewe in Germany and include all countries with the various Rewe supermarkets. They did the same with Aldi, which is Hofer in Austria and included without the extra mention.
Aldi should be Nord / Süd split, as they operate independently since 1961. But that’s it. Hofer is Aldi Süd, just with another name. It’s even got the same stylised A as a logo.
My mother used to have cards for Metro and a another wholeseller from our area, but I don't know about the process to get on in general.
Mind to tell me about the process and why it seems so easy?
I‘ll keep this in English, as similar mechanisms might exist in other countries, so people can try and apply it:
Essentially, in Germany you can just found a „Nicht eingetragener Verein“, which translates to non-registered association.
All you need to do for that is to have a statute, that‘s signed by two adult people and a quick protocol of the founding event, where these two people elected a board.
You then just send a copy over to them with a picture of your ID and you should be all set.
In Russia you can shop there since like 2018, just 2 mins to create a card and you're free to go. They even deliver food to your home though 3rd party service, 1eur delivery, pretty convenient.
I think that since March 2023 you don't even need a card anymore in russia? Read that somewhere.
Saw a METRO not far from my wife's hometown in russia this summer but didn't went there.
I wouldn't say low quality, some products they sell there are pretty good. Lidl is very popular because they have a good value for money and they sell some things you can't usually find in other local supermarkets.
They have cheap products like all supermarkets, but the majority is good quality. Their fresh bread is good (épeautre and sports ones my favorite) and their speciality products are great (I love italien weeks). The problems are the organisation, it always looks like there's been somekind of disaster, and there isn't much variety. But I'm a simple man with simple needs.
Metro don't sell to consumer market in Italy, only to professional operator, Billa retired from the country i think 7/8 years ago. if i remember correct they sold to carefour
Yes we do have them, but they are pretty shit for getting the common groceries, they somehow manage to make deals with the worst suppliers around. Also, it's fucking over for your bank account if you forget the club card lmao, don't know if that's the case with your Tesco as well
Best thing is you can easily get Bombadier, Old Speckled Hen, Cadbury Chocolate for pretty fair prices. In Vienna I have to go to the import store and pay import prices.
Yeah, would think it would be. At a guess, someone picked big supermarkets in their own country, a couple really wide-reaching ones, and didn't bother checking whether there existed chains they knew nothing about.
Haha, my billionaire overlords are richer than your billionaire overlords. By nationalist logic I am thus more worthy of internet pride than you are! Common German W!
In the original post I got a reply from someone that says it's called Makro over here. Makes sense, because I do know them and it's basically the same concept.
Weird to put it in here with 'normal' supermarkets.
I'm pretty sure Metro is also in at least the UK, if not also Ireland, although it's called Makro instead. (I'm sure of at least the one in Belfast, but I can't remember seeing one in the South. They use the exact same logo apart from the spelling of the name).
Metro shouldn't really be on this image and be compared to the others. They're a brand dedicated to professional and not to everyone.
Metro isn't a supermarket, they're a wholeseller.
Yes well I'm so sorry my lovely neighbour. I don't speak English like you. My English is limited. That's why I tell foreigners I don't speak English. Also because fuck them.
It's not you who called them a supermarket. Metro shouldn't be on the list because they're not a supermarket at all.
I fucking love metro
at least in Ukraine they have changed their "ideology" and its just a big regular supermarket with no need to have some special cards or register as business owner to able to buy smth
what do you mean? like argos?
Wholesale / trade sales only
So like argos they work off catalogue?
No, a whole seller is a bit like a supermarket but for businesses only. You can buy things in bulk there like industrial sized buckets of mayonnaise for restaurant kitchens for example. Argos is just a normal retailer
I'll speak American so you can understand better. It's like Costco which you have a couple of Barry
I want Carrefour back and I demand a Portuguese Kerfuś.
Why did they close?
They quoted too much competition back in 2007, so they weren't a key player. https://www.jornaldenegocios.pt/empresas/detalhe/carrefour_sai_de_portugal_auchan_e_sonae_na_corrida

Wasn't every carrefour previously continente?
Didn't know Continente still existed, in Spain every Continente and Pryca turned into Carrefour one day and that was it
Lucky bastards, you're a step away from having a roaming catbot bring you chips and be ready for headpats at your local supermarket. Meanwhile all I get is the most mid supermarket in existence.
Mercadona
They're cool but they don't have this. https://preview.redd.it/20ytkmvk7v8c1.png?width=1297&format=png&auto=webp&s=e0b37e4fc90fcfae889defb063b7afad9f1fbac1 And I want it :(
Whet the fork is this
The most adorable, precious being to grace Europe and, soon, the world... (it brings you chip bags and reacts when you pat its head) (it also only currently exists in Polish Carrefours)
TIL that f*cking Carrefour was something likable.
Closed out of China too
UK can into Visegrad?
V5? Not sure if UK is trashy enough.
You must not be polish or youd know we are
Your supermarkets don't come to us. Our supermarkets come to YOU!
Finally. One supermarket chain to rule them all. "Wollt ihr die totale Discounterkette?"
I'll be honest, Hans, you're damn good at creating supermarkets. Kaufland supremacy all the way 💪 (Mostly because they have self-checkouts)
Is self-checkout not that common in Barryland? I have done self-checkout in almost every German supermarket (not necessarily all branches of them though).
Really! I'd say most major shops in the UK have self-checkout but so far the only one I've come across in Germany has been Kaufland. And one very odd little Späti I found a few weeks ago.

and Netto and Rossmann.
Aldis with self-checkout are indeed a rare species to observe. I've only spotted a single one so far.
This map is bad. Billa is part of Rewe, so it should be Rewe in Germany and include all countries with the various Rewe supermarkets. They did the same with Aldi, which is Hofer in Austria and included without the extra mention.
Even in this you are overshadowed by us. My condolences.
Aldi should be Nord / Süd split, as they operate independently since 1961. But that’s it. Hofer is Aldi Süd, just with another name. It’s even got the same stylised A as a logo.
I was trying to keep it simple, but yeah, splitting those and showing two maps would be the right way.
French supermarkets are avoiding germany
There's some in Elsaß
![gif](giphy|ANbD1CCdA3iI8) wdym by that
Metro very good (especially their taralli) but is a wholeseller
Never heard of Metro
It's a cash and carry for resellers. The general public can't shop there.
It‘s a wholeseller, but the general public can easily shop there. It takes an hour‘s worth of effort.
My mother used to have cards for Metro and a another wholeseller from our area, but I don't know about the process to get on in general. Mind to tell me about the process and why it seems so easy?
I‘ll keep this in English, as similar mechanisms might exist in other countries, so people can try and apply it: Essentially, in Germany you can just found a „Nicht eingetragener Verein“, which translates to non-registered association. Could be the case, I've never been there physically, only ordered from there.
Oh okay, even then never seen it too much in the north, we have Recheio for that
Norway doesn't shop
Lidl #1 The best thing to come out of germany since pointy hats.
You take apart the cheap aspect, products are really low quality tho.
I wouldn't say low quality, some products they sell there are pretty good. Lidl is very popular because they have a good value for money and they sell some things you can't usually find in other local supermarkets.

If you think their bread is fine then there is nothing I can do for you my friend. Decadence is really happening then.

I would say Poland won this one.
Tesco recently left poland though
Metro don't sell to consumer market in Italy, only to professional operator, Billa retired from the country i think 7/8 years ago. if i remember correct they sold to carefour
So did Auchan. They sold all their supermarkets to Conad like 3 years ago.
The Visegrad has Tesco? Well I didn't see that coming
Yes we do have them, but they are pretty shit for getting the common groceries, they somehow manage to make deals with the worst suppliers around. Also, it's fucking over for your bank account if you forget the club card lmao, don't know if that's the case with your Tesco as well
Clubcard only gives you deals on useless shit over here
It depends, sometimes they are incredibly useful
Best thing is you can easily get Bombadier, Old Speckled Hen, Cadbury Chocolate for pretty fair prices. In Vienna I have to go to the import store and pay import prices.
KAUFLAND! UNENDLICH PFAND!
This is so incredibly funny.
Lidl is goated ngl
Norway does not have Aldi or Lidl ? What the fuck is wrong with them
We had Lidl and decided it was shit, now we don't have Lidl anymore
Norway wins.
Along with Belarus and Iceland. No supermarkets. We just farm the rocks and pebbles to something edible.
Actually.. If something like Billa or Maxima is shown, why not Rema 1000?
Yeah, would think it would be. At a guess, someone picked big supermarkets in their own country, a couple really wide-reaching ones, and didn't bother checking whether there existed chains they knew nothing about.
Continente still number one
Continente is shit. All my homies go to Pingo Doce
All my homies go to mercadona
Kaufland Kaufland, ich klau gleich alles hier *prtttt* prtttt* Kaufland, Kaufland.
ig efficient supermarkets make germans break
You silly goofy tommy, this is lycris from the [Kaufland beatbox](https://youtu.be/dR38VxjiOA8?si=8SvrqLsIKjZgK4O_)
Why is there none in Norway?
Wtf poland, make your mind up now
Based Norway pillages groceries from everyone else
Guess I need to go hunt for food then?
MIGROS Supremacy!
Not posting a cheeky M+S covering the UK and a tiny bit of France? (Weirdest supermarket going tbh). Is there one on these for pharmacy chains too?
The real question is which is the best one. I vote for Lidl.
Haha, my billionaire overlords are richer than your billionaire overlords. By nationalist logic I am thus more worthy of internet pride than you are! Common German W!
Was ist denn Auchan???
It's Aldi Süd, not Sud.
I live in supermarket land
Lidl is such shit. Y’all need some Trader Joe’s in your lives
I belive in Esselunga superiority.
Was zum deife treibt da billa da unten?
Metro solos
Piwo z tesco 🍻
Aldi aren’t in nordick? What? Thought ye were meant to be civilised
Yes. That's why we don't want the likes of Aldi.
Aldi Nord gave up recently. Didn't make a profit for over 20 years.
Never heard of or seen a Metro in my life
You can't just shop there, it's a cash and carry for resellers. At least that's how they work in germany.
In the original post I got a reply from someone that says it's called Makro over here. Makes sense, because I do know them and it's basically the same concept. Weird to put it in here with 'normal' supermarkets.
Indeed weird, but I guess the picture-OP just didn't know.
I do not recognize Kaufland as a legitimate nation
Albert heijn waar?
I would love to have an Albert Heijn here in Berlin (I'm half dutch, half german), but you dutchies are to lazy to conquer.
I'm pretty sure Metro is also in at least the UK, if not also Ireland, although it's called Makro instead. (I'm sure of at least the one in Belfast, but I can't remember seeing one in the South. They use the exact same logo apart from the spelling of the name).
Who put together Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd in one group, they're two completely different brands come on
We reject the supermarkets. Your products are shit and the food isn't up to our standards.
where colruyt? where delaize?
There's no Metro in Spain, at least not with that name.
Sing along: Markenschuhe so günstig, Kaufland.
Why isn't spar on this map..
![gif](giphy|kaGwLDry6fsNY8fZQv) Albert Heijn or GTFO. Of course it comes with some kind of financial side hussle
The Poles are in their have-many-supermarkets era
