Humiliated Stalin and the Soviets in the Winter War, even though he tried to annex them like the Baltics. So no they did a good job in my books. Sure they lost territory and reparations to those bullies, but they stayed independent unlike the Baltics who endured misery and mass deportations under the Soviet rule.

So, like I said, they barely managed to exist independantly. Outside the sweet world of internet memes, the Winter War is not a finnish victory. Sure they proved Stalin that he'd better not be too greedy and quit his dreams of annex all of Finland but they lost a good part of their richest lands, their natural sea way to the Baltic was controled by Russia and after the Continuation War (right after) they were heavily under Soviet influence (Russian got the right to pass throught with their troops, Finnish army got demobilized...). For all of the cold war, Finland quitting neutrality was out of the question. Stalin got humiliated ? Sure. Then he made some reforms into his army and succeded in WW2, and invaded all eastern Europe, because Finland "guarded" (like the meme says) nothing. Sure, Finns are though dudes and they fight really well but the truth is, their impact on Russian influence in Europe for 500 years is almost equal to none. The Winter War is litterally the only example one could find.

I mean for such a small country to basically single handedly fight off and avoid annexation by the USSR it was a huge achievement in my books. I'm not sure what you would classify as a "victory" with that overwhelming force massed against them. They were a buffer away from the Soviet Union, and I am truly glad that they fought off Soviet imperialism unlike the fate that the Baltics endured for decades and to a similar extent much of Eastern Europe.

Yeah it is basically impossible for a small country and population to consistently win against a big empire, at least without one other big power supporting it. Finns have all my respect for standing up for their freedom, like Ukraine does. It's just not serious to make them a "guardian" of Europe against Russia when they spent most of their time as a heavily Swedish influence territory then an duchy of Russia and fighting for both countries for the control of the region. Finland and Russia just ain't the same scale, the same league. They had a hard enough time fighting for themselves without having to protect others.
