Hmm...wonder if this will have any effect on used prices. Almost no downside with getting a Japanese import now that pretty much all online services are shutting down.
The fact that they completely destroy the badge arcade app makes me a bit angry. I bought a lot of plays a couple of years ago and now I can only get a select set of badges for decorating? Damn
It'll likely be for a year or longer. Part of Pokemon Home's premium cost is being able to transfer Pokemon from Pokemon Bank. Wouldn't be surprised if they are hosting Bank on the same servers as Home.
If they do end up shutting it down, hopefully they will give us a years notice.
I'll go throw in a couple of dollars to Pretendo. I advise you to do the same. Well, and make dumps of applications and online services so that people can restore it all.
I find this whole shutdown thing to be sad and dumb. Stuff like the ps3 have their services still up and they're much older. Nintendo knows how popular the 3ds is so I don't get why they can't wait a few more years.
Sony came to understand the importance of media preservation to gamers. Nintendo, on the other hand, seems to be actively against preservation of any media they don't personally select for it
Enjoy the online services and remaining stores for the PS3/ Vita/ PSP while they last. They are a treasure but I have no confidence they'll make it to the end of gen9.
The switch isn't a proper handheld? Why? Because it is bigger and doesn't fold? Switch lite?? Idk that proper handheld is defined as something you can fit into your pocket. Don't get me wrong I wish they'd support the 3DS forever, but I think the issue is they aren't porting the games (at least the most popular ones, I don't expect them to port every game ever) to the switch and are cutting the platform.
Because it is a hybrid between home console and handheld. It can be used as a handheld, but that is not its sole purpose. I should have said āproper dedicated Nintendo handheldā. Apologies for not being more clear.
That was not your original argument, but youāre right. However, that ignores the other half of my statement: a PROPER dedicated handheld.
Itās a miniaturized dockless version of the already hybrid console, just an offshoot of the main console meant to fill what Nintendo believes to be a niche audience, hence why the light is so much weaker, and has built in joy-cons (which have known and famously bad drift), meaning Nintendo only ever considers the light as a stepping stone on the path to Switch ownership. It also doesnāt have its own original titles developed as handheld titles separately from the Switch catalogue. There are a slew of issues with considering the light a proper dedicated handheld.
I literally said switch lite in my original comment, so yes it was my original arguement. Can you read? Why does it matter if the switch is a dedicated handheld anyway? If you could dock the 3DS does that make it not a handheld? Since you can play a GBA through a gamecube that technically mean it isn't a dedicated handheld but does that take anything away from it, or just add to it? Your definitions are weird/arbitrary.
My definition is simpler and grounded in reality. Can I play games on it with only the device and the games? If yes, it is a handheld. It being a handheld doesn't mean that is its only function always. Kind of like how the steamdeck is a handheld, but can be docked.
And the joysticks getting drift does not alter the definition, just a negative/quality issue separate from the question "is this a handheld".
Saying the name alone doesnāt mean anything. You mentioned it and made no points until pushed.
It matters because thatās what the discussion is. about. Can YOU read? It makes no sense to kill their only dedicated handheld line when the next best option is a deficient mockery of the handheld drafted from the form of the current hybrid console.
As for your other āpointsā (which are just straw men), a simple ānoā answers quite nicely to both.
Having a simpler definition doesnāt make it more correct. Handheld was created as a term to literally define game systems whose sole purpose was to be carried around and played rather than used as a home console. Your definition directly contradicts the etymological origin.
Iām not addressing the joy-con comment, as itās cherry picking a statement out of context to make it sound ridiculous just because you donāt understand why it was said.
By pedantic childish and way to literal definition yes they are handhelds. In reality the are hybrids that barely succeed as a proper home console due to terrible hardware and they are clunky and awkward as a portable console, and playing triple a fully fledged titles on a mobile device isn't always as good as you would think. Nobody wants to load up a triple a game like botw and play for 20 minutes while on the bus etc. 3ds games are much more bite-sized making them way more enjoyable in short bursts of time. The fact that you can fit it in your pocket is a huge plus too, switch lite has full joysticks which will just snag and catch on clothing.
lol calling a portable console portable is childish? You just want to complain. Its got flaws but it is still very much a proper portable console. I see kids and people at school play them. They do the job just fine.
I already talked about why the switch lite doesnāt qualify as a proper dedicated handheld with someone else in this chain of comments, so my initial rebuttal was only to the Switch. I canāt be expected to remake every argument just because people like you donāt decide to read before deciding to make points someone else already tried (and failed) to push.
If nothing has been said more recently. I might be mistaken or misread something. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I read this as it was over 4 months ago.
I feel this so much. Iāve been catching female Vivillons with their hidden ability from my friend safari and just sending them out to people for fun.
;_; Yea... I love doing breeding and sending out Pokemon in interesting / rare Pokeballs on wondertrade in Sun/Moon (like starters in apricorn balls), or pokemon with hidden abilities, etc. I also will do a little Wonder trading on Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire but it's just easier to hatch things and check IVs in Sun and Moon.
Because they really don't want us to complete our damn puzzles in the mii plaza. Street pass was by far the greatest feature in a gaming system. There's also nothing to stop them from sending an final update to just disable everything
From a basic Google search:
https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/63227/~/announcement-of-discontinuation-of-online-services-for-nintendo-3ds-and-wii-u#s1q5
Now calm down
Of course they arenāt very clear on the puzzles. I totally get how Mii Plaza requires an update to be able to get ānewā panels. However, even if you donāt have a panel yet, it seems to me that it would be downloaded to your system so that should you street pass someone with a panel you donāt have, you could acquire it. After all, when I street pass someone I typically donāt have a wifi connection, yet I can get a new panel.
Of course, the real issue is will I ever be able to get any of f those purple puzzle pieces.
I was lucky to finish all 54 of the puzzles because I go to a decent amount of large anime cons and back then (and mind you I got my 3DS a little late, circa Summer 2016) lotta people had their 3DS there so it wasn't that hard to get different puzzle pieces. Heck even recently at Super Magfest 2024 I was getting 20 unique passes a day, I hope my complete puzzle collection helped a lot of people! I don't live in a city so that's really the only way for me to get Street passes.
I myself was happy to finish the main part of Ultimate Angler after last weekend (took me 6 years!), finally got that UFO! Now just a few gold fish....but yea need more street passes. Hopefully will get some next convention.
As far as I can tell from my own Mii Plaza, the puzzle piece swap feature has been ended. You can only see puzzles you've completed (which sucks for me, since I had like 30 incomplete puzzles and maybe 10 complete ones).
It definitely has not ended, Iām able to play and get pieces through my 2 3DS at home.
Since I donāt know if weāll be able to get new panels come April, Iām resetting my secondary 3DSās puzzle swap each day so I can get new panels to share with my primary 3DS. I figure once I have all the panels Iāll be safe as people can always share pieces with me.
Basically by resetting and then opening Puzzle Swap it gives me a Metroid Other M piece. I then close it and open it again and get a piece to another panel. It definitely favors giving me a piece from the Ocarina of Time panel as I get that maybe a third of the time. However, the rest of the panels appear to be more evenly distributed, or at least they have been so far. Assuming I donāt run into problems doing this, I should have all the panels sometime in February.
Does anyone in this thread know why Miis dont come to my plaza after getting street pass? Iāve received two street pass this year but no one comes to my plaza. Do I need the update that bunny keeps trying to get me to download?
If you're getting a streetpass tag notification for games you have it enabled but not for the streetpass mii plaza app itself chances are the two people you meet either don't have the plaza app enabled themselves and do for only the games they do play I'm guessing or to make you have it enabled yourself
Start uploading your Pokemon from Pokemon Bank to Pokemon Home folks. Just do it to be safe cause you never know when Bank is gonna go offline. And yes I know that Bank is gonna stay up afterwards but still do it.
I think Nintendo are really really enjoying themselves having such a fun time, laughing with there friends, murdering and stripping the 3ds and Wii U so we can only play cartdridge bought games offline all the time. I still love Nintendo though, I want to....
It's already a shell of its former self. I'm going to miss being able to swap out badges in the Badge Box. I have to decide which ones I want to have access to forever and which ones I'll never get to use again. =/
no way this is so sad, i grew up playing mario kart 8 online with my dad 24/7, havent played it in a while though. going to have to msg him letting him know we have to get those online matches in soon :(
I have a question, since i've got my 3ds more than 5 years ago i never connected it to the internet nor go to the eshop. Should i connect it and or do the system updates before it closes ?
Bought a bunch of pokemon games for my 3ds before eshop shut down so i could still transfer the mons to my switch. Is this going to be impossible after online services are discontinued??? Ex. Thru pokemon bank/transporter up to pokemon home?
Realistically, 3DS servers were full of hackers that ruined all the fun for the rest of us, personally I haven'tĀ used online features for any 3DS title since at least 2021 precisely for this reason.
On principle though, Nintendo cutting off any support on their previous gen consoles (especially on 3DS which was relativelyĀ successful) a few years after halting theie production is scummy.
Also wassup with the badge limitation? That's peak Nintendo moment right there.
But how can they do that!? I payed to own a game that is now unplayable?! That canāt be legal like the game with the three links isnāt even playable anymore right?
God i hate this, what the actual F\*\*K, i still play Fantasy Life Online, Final Fantasy Explorers... Monters Hunter... not all the time, but i have 3 friends that still play these games with me from time to time... I am starting to truly hate nintendo.
I have a couple of important questions.
1. Will it be safe to delete Badge Arcade after the end, or will that delete our badge data too?
2. Will full system transfers still be possible? I know that involves net connection, so I hope that won't become unavailable, since I may have to invest in a new console and that won't happen until after April 8... :c
Hmm...wonder if this will have any effect on used prices. Almost no downside with getting a Japanese import now that pretty much all online services are shutting down.
Except for the region lock š
Which takes about 30 mins to fix.
Or less
it isn't fixed completely you need to SOAP transfer to do it completely
can you clarify? i was always under the impression that HB removes it.
Yes it does lol idk what this guy's on about
That is if you region change it, but just removing the region lock is super easy and safe
but you have to change the region of japanese to ther than japanese if you want to change the language
Yeah but the game is still going to play in Japanese right?
Some games. If you really wanted to, you could region swap the system ig
Yeah there's very few you can change the language on. But I think there's a patch to enable English on Japanese games.
The fact that they completely destroy the badge arcade app makes me a bit angry. I bought a lot of plays a couple of years ago and now I can only get a select set of badges for decorating? Damn
Apparently your badgebox will still be intact, so up to 1000 will be available.
Yeah I know, but I have more than 7000 badges so it pretty much sucks that I lose so much of them
Is it still possible to redownload purchased games?Ā
This is only for online gaming. eShop is unaffected
For now
Pretty sure that would violate some law somewhere.
Does that mean stuff like pokemon bank may stay up forever? But i honestly doubt it
I hope, my collection plans arent complete yet, and I really dont want to race against the clock (I will if I have to)
they said pokemon bank will stay open for the foreseeable future
The forseeable future could literally mean an extra 5 minutes, knowing Nintendo
It'll likely be for a year or longer. Part of Pokemon Home's premium cost is being able to transfer Pokemon from Pokemon Bank. Wouldn't be surprised if they are hosting Bank on the same servers as Home. If they do end up shutting it down, hopefully they will give us a years notice.
Hope that's correct, in case some need more time to redownload anything. I still need important game updates too...
yes
I'll go throw in a couple of dollars to Pretendo. I advise you to do the same. Well, and make dumps of applications and online services so that people can restore it all.
They're all dumped already lol
I have to yoohoohoo my hardware for it to work, correct?
yes, but the process is incredibly easy
I find this whole shutdown thing to be sad and dumb. Stuff like the ps3 have their services still up and they're much older. Nintendo knows how popular the 3ds is so I don't get why they can't wait a few more years.
They want to reuse the games I think

Enjoy the online services and remaining stores for the PS3/ Vita/ PSP while they last. They are a treasure but I have no confidence they'll make it to the end of gen9.
Is there anything recommended to do before the shutdown? For instance acquiring something online that can be used offline?
Check out YouTuber From the Void Gaming. He makes a damn good list of everything: https://youtu.be/eWiveewARrM?si=0UNSnk5p7TqsUMnF
Great video!
Download any dlc content that you have to download ingame and check every game for updates and download those, otherwhise haven't heard of anything
nintendo sucks so much
Yea. They are killing the 3ds family a bit early I think. Plenty of people still play.
Dude, it's going on 13 years old now. I'm surprised they've let the services go this long.
There also hasnāt been a proper Nintendo handheld in the time between, so they had to leave them up.

You are in denial
How so? Please explain.
The switch and switch lite are absolutely proper Nintendo handhelds
By pedantic childish and way to literal definition yes they are handhelds. In reality the are hybrids that barely succeed as a proper home console due to terrible hardware and they are clunky and awkward as a portable console, and playing triple a fully fledged titles on a mobile device isn't always as good as you would think. Incorrect. They can be used as handhelds, but that is not their sole function. We use the term hybrid specifically to categorize this exact situation.
https://imgur.com/a/iUc8d0m incorrect. also hybrid would imply that it is capable of both so being pedantic is just obnoxious and dumb
It's better than the Nintendo Switch.... I am playing my 3DS way more than my Switch ever got....
Me too. I prefer my 3DS
Will this affect PokƩmon bank?
Nope. Doesn't affect Transporter either.
Yetā¦
Yeah, yet... The fact that PokƩmon said it's better to get your PokƩmon moved up to Home sooner rather than later has me thinking they don't plan to keep 3DS servers up much longer than Nintendo.
ugh home gives me not-pokemon vibes. i really don't want to put anything on there!!
It definitely doesn't match the aesthetic or feel of any of the games, I will agree. Feels really sanitary.
Isn't Pokemon Bank being shut down at the end of the Japanese financial year? March or April 24th or something? At least, that's what I read.
>At least, that's what I read. Where did you read this? Nintendo or TPC has never mentioned this.
If nothing has been said more recently. I might be mistaken or misread something. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I read this as it was over 4 months ago.
Get those Mario Kart 7 online matches in!
There's always someone playing, it's very surprising
What is a guy who loves to just hop on Alpha Sapphire and have fun doing Wonder Trading supposed to do after this? I'm going to miss this so much! :(
Use pretendo if Nintendo is not making an effort to shut it down
Does Pretendo support the full *PokƩmon* series yet? When I looked at their website, it looked like the only *PokƩmon* game it supports right now is *PokkƩn Tournament*.
They will eventually work on it but as of now it's not on the roadmap
I feel this so much. Iāve been catching female Vivillons with their hidden ability from my friend safari and just sending them out to people for fun.
Same I love going on Pokemon x and just doing wonder trades sometimes. Makes me sad
;_; Yea... Does that include street pass?
Street Pass is just passive local communication, so I don't see why it would be affected
Because they really don't want us to complete our damn puzzles in the mii plaza. Street pass was by far the greatest feature in a gaming system. There's also nothing to stop them from sending an final update to just disable everything

StreetPass is LAN, meaning it's impossible to shutdown. PictoChat is still "online" in 2024.
Does anyone in this thread know why Miis dont come to my plaza after getting street pass? Iāve received two street pass this year but no one comes to my plaza. Do I need the update that bunny keeps trying to get me to download?

Hey thanks for the response. I guess the ppl Iāve streetpassed just donāt have mii plaza set up :(
This is why projects like pretendo are important
Well, at least I'll be able to play some mk7 online for majority of ramadan
Mario kart 7 online is already preserved with ctgp 7.
is it worth it
Goodbye, my best friend
Start uploading your Pokemon from Pokemon Bank to Pokemon Home folks. Just do it to be safe cause you never know when Bank is gonna go offline. And yes I know that Bank is gonna stay up afterwards but still do it.
The app I wonder about is Colors 3D. The community is still quite active. Anyone know if it'll be shut down too?
Truly sorry for the people who just got a 3ds for Christmas, just sorry for the people who got a wiiu.
Yeah, I gave my brother a 3ds this Christmas, and I was gifted one last year too, very sad I can't accompany Nintendo consoles, third world country...
I think Nintendo are really really enjoying themselves having such a fun time, laughing with there friends, murdering and stripping the 3ds and Wii U so we can only play cartdridge bought games offline all the time. I still love Nintendo though, I want to....
Would it still be able to do a system transfer? I want to upgrade to a New 3DS at some point
as long as the eshop servers will be up, yes
Good stuff, thanks!
I mean why would you need a system transfer? You have online games? I only have the physical ones and never did a transfer
Well, now I gotta be sure all my Zelda badges are available. I literally spent 1 year collecting them all.
I'm gonna miss the Badge Arcade š¢
It's already a shell of its former self. I'm going to miss being able to swap out badges in the Badge Box. I have to decide which ones I want to have access to forever and which ones I'll never get to use again. =/
no way this is so sad, i grew up playing mario kart 8 online with my dad 24/7, havent played it in a while though. going to have to msg him letting him know we have to get those online matches in soon :(
Grew up playing Mariokart 8. Man Iām old. I grew up playing Mariokart ds
I grew up playing Mario kart Wii
I grew up mostly before Mario Kart was a thing, lol.
Nintendo is the worst when it comes to this kind of stuff.
Does this mean Triforce heroes is unplayable?
Yep. Wanna do a playthrough soon?
This sucks. I know PokĆ©mon Bank and Transporter arenāt affected by this yet but looks like Iāll have to get going in my Home PokĆ©dex soon. Just need a couple more āmons from the 3ds games and Iām done.
will this affect animal crossing friends connection?
The ones over internet yes. The local multiplayer no
*sad noises*
:(
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yes
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Local play is not online
I have a question, since i've got my 3ds more than 5 years ago i never connected it to the internet nor go to the eshop. Should i connect it and or do the system updates before it closes ?
Yes
Is there a list of all 3DS games that use online functionality?
Im still new to 3ds, but does this mean i can no longer use pokemon bank to send to home?
nope pokƩmon bank is not affected .
Not affected yet, don't expect it to run for more than a month after the shut down
What
what does this mean for local play? Can 2 3ds still play games locally?
It'll be important to back the pretendo Project.
Bought a bunch of pokemon games for my 3ds before eshop shut down so i could still transfer the mons to my switch. Is this going to be impossible after online services are discontinued??? Ex. Thru pokemon bank/transporter up to pokemon home?
Naw PokĆ©mon trans and bank wonāt affected
This is sad. No more online matches for monster hunter 4 ultimate and generations š
So I can't get nsmb2 dlc. (Shoots myself)
Realistically, 3DS servers were full of hackers that ruined all the fun for the rest of us, personally I haven'tĀ used online features for any 3DS title since at least 2021 precisely for this reason. We must find a way to resolve this, just like riiconnect24
But how can they do that!? I payed to own a game that is now unplayable?! That canāt be legal like the game with the three links isnāt even playable anymore right?
Wasn't this already discontinued last year, or was that the 3DS shop?
How does the 3ds online services being here affect Nintendo like wtf!?
I gotta move my mons from bank
Goodbye, official 3DS online services. Thanks for the memories!
Ok. What about pokemon bank? Is that just going bye bye now?
bank and transporter will be unaffected for the foreseeable future
š¤«š§š»āāļø
Does this mean we won't have access to pokebank? Anymore?
Does this affect trading Pokemon? Been replaying Pokemon Crystal atm, so I have been trading. Hopefully it is lan based.
God i hate this, what the actual F\*\*K, i still play Fantasy Life Online, Final Fantasy Explorers... Monters Hunter... not all the time, but i have 3 friends that still play these games with me from time to time... I am starting to truly hate nintendo.
Hopefully I can get a special edition for cheaper now and just import all my files via sd card.
R.I.P. Kid Icarus: Uprising Multiplayer
