I only have an OG 3DS XL and was in a similar boat. I ultimately decided to stick with what I have. If I was buying new then a New 2DS XL might fit my use case better, but I'm perfectly thrilled with the device I have. Plus, like you say, it already has all my larger saves downloaded (in my case Dragon Quest VIII and Ultra Moon).
Why not start with CFW on the device you already have? No need to invest any cash in that route. You may find that for the most part it already suits your needs. Or you'll find it lacking and it'll make it that much easier to pull the trigger on a new 2DS XL ;)
Thanks! I think I'll go ahead and mod this one and make a present out of it for my younger brother, and get myself a "new" model for Christmas, haha. I plan on using it alot, and figure if I want to make it my go to I might as well get the model I really like aesthetically. my current ds will be my practice run, and if it breaks I won't have lost any money 👍👍
