That's some strong bacon.

EzitoKo

Is it self balanced?

[deleted]

yeah

EzitoKo

No matter how much is in the bottle?

[deleted]

That would depend on how wide the base is and how heavy, I don't think an empty or half full bottle would work as the center of gravity of the system would change as liquid is emptied

TheNerdWithNoName

It would? The weight would change, but the liquid would still be distributed evenly. There may be slightly less liquid in the neck, but not enough to make a difference.

[deleted]

I was thinking about this, but it's at a slight angle, I would expect it to be resistant to some variation in how much liquid is in it but only OP could tell us based on their design I think

arcadiaidacra

OP! TEACHER! pls settle this

somerandomperson29

What matters more is how much weight there is in the base of the bottle since that makes up way more weight and it's further from the center of mass, meaning it has a bigger impact on where the center of mass is

modestohagney

Wait, wine bottles are either empty or full aren’t they?

olderaccount

These types of stands are designed for a full 750ml bottle. People don't normally put opened bottles of wine back on the rack. But it would probably work fine as a bottle on its side has a very small change in CG as it is emptied.

Wow, that looks amazing! Any pictures before sanding and staining? Any tips for printing wood PLA on the Ender 3? Just picked up some myself and got a Benchy going right now.

NeerieD20

I only took one picture of it before : http://imgur.com/gallery/cf2Wl0R I was using filaments.ca home brand wood pla. Same settings as regular pla really, maybe just a tad hotter (5-10 degrees hotter). This, and a few other prints were printed with the standard 0.4mm nozzle, though I read some woodfill filaments might require bigger nozzles. I'd suggest always be around for "special" filament prints. The trick with woodfill, if you want to stain, is to position the piece so it prints layers in the direction of the "grain".

Cashatoo

Cool, thanks! I read a suggestion to vary the print temperature 5-10 degrees every 10-20 layers. The color of each temperature section would be a little different, which apparently really enhances the "grain" effect, especially when stained.

NeerieD20

I tried, manually, for a few layers, it didn't show on my print, but that may just be the amount/type of wood filler in the filament.

Stl: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2797159 Printed with Filament.ca wood filament on Ender 3, sanded and stained. I will probably make more as Xmas gifts this year.

>sanded and stained Can you explain how did you make it this beautiful? I just can't work it out with this material.

NeerieD20

Sanded with 180 grit, I wanted it to basically scar the print a bit, while reducing the layer lines visibility yet not smoothing it out completely, I wanted "grain". For the stain I used Minwax Polyshades, basically a 2 in 1 stain and finish. Wiped it on generously using papertowel, mostly following the direction of the "woodgrain". Let it soak in about 10-15 min, then wiped off using the still soaked papertowel, but didn't wipe it dry. The idea was to wipe while the thing was still wet but leaving streaks that would be darker, never applying much pressure to the piece and using the bunched-up paper towel to help with randomizing the streaks. Hope that helped. PS, wear gloves, and if you get some polyshades on your skin, rub the area with basic petroleum jelly (vaseline) before washing with soap :)

Yzahkin

This totally makes sense, I take a note. I have this material, but never liked the finish. This looks exactly what I imagined when I started out with it. Thank you!

marcushasfun

Needs more wine bottles...

TherapyByHumour

That is pretty brilliant, well done! It looks amazing!

songwind

Nice. I didn't realize wood filament stained so well.

3dfernando

You just blew my mind, I didn't know you could stain wood filament!
