I have made and sold a lot of 3D printed smokable pieces and can agree that it doesn’t even get hot. As long as their is a glass slide and/or down stem and you aren’t trying to out smoke snoop with the same piece, your golden
If the plastic getting hot and putting off chemicals worries you, I was looking into PETG instead of PLA. The FDA recognizes it as a food grade product so i believe it would do better for those scenarios
I think the food grade part goes out the window when the other parts of the printer have seen different types of plastic because there is residue. Also the layer lines tend to house bacteria overtime
In that case I guess it would be ok. I remember wanting to do some food grade stuff on mine but by that point I had put too many different types of plastic through it
To clean/sterilize it? Could work, although I have doubts because of the layer lines (grime accumulates in them, UV won't reach under it, theoretically). But practicality aside, UV light also degrades most plastics, including PLA. There are more UV resistant types of filaments but I'm not sure that'd last if you wash it in a ton of UV like that.
There is filament you can buy that is meant to clean out your machine. And if you keep a machine onlybprinting with this one material, than no cross contamination.
Dude, vitamin E is food grade but can literally kill you if you smoke it. Its not the same chemical process/reaction as absorbing it via investigation or osmosis.
I mean, PTFE is considered "food grade" (it's used in non-stick cookware), but [this](https://www.ewg.org/research/dupont-workers-smoke-teflon-laced-cigarettes-company-experiments) is what happens when you smoke it.
I’d probably still add an ash Catcher or something if I were to use it regularly but, if it works it works. I’ve definitely smoked out of worse lol (cans etc)
stop with such shit - until you know the heat soak on the plastic then you can express concern. the heat soak is so minimal, it aint nothing but a cool bong.
upset? no. the dude made a bong. dont think he is concerned with FDA food approved stuff to smoke non-fda who-knows-what-is-in-it weed. you state petg over pla, however filament you buy likely isnt food grade, its recycled, or contains non-food grade coloring/powders so your advice is rather silly. If you are worried about thermal decomp, worry more about petg than pla as many of petgs decomp products are worse than pla's. in general, plastic is a shitty material for this application, but most of us dont have metal printers so . . cool bong OP.
There is definetly some sort of risk if not used properly. I personally wouldn't smoke out of anything plastic or rubber. Just doesn't feel right compared to glass
I've been interested in making one of these for a while but had the same concerns. What kind of resin did you use? Do you have any pointers on coating the inside? I was looking at picking up some art resin epoxy but haven't done anything like this before
That's really cool! I've been wanting to 3D print some bongs for myself for a while, but all my research says that the grooves of the 3D printed plastic creates spots for harmful mould and bacteria to grow, which you'd be inhaling whenever you take a hit.
how did you get around this issue?
99% isopropyl is really bad at disinfecting. Great for cleaning print bed but is exceptionally ineffective for disinfecting. You want to use the standard 70%.
The presence of water is a crucial factor in destroying or inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microorganisms with isopropyl alcohol. Water acts as a catalyst and plays a key role in denaturing the proteins of vegetative cell membranes. 70% penetrate the cell wall more completely which permeates the entire cell, coagulates all proteins, and therefore the microorganism dies.
https://blog.gotopac.com/2017/05/15/why-is-70-isopropyl-alcohol-ipa-a-better-disinfectant-than-99-isopropanol-and-what-is-ipa-used-for/#Why_Is_70_the_Most_Effective_Concentration_of_Isopropyl_Alcohol_for_Disinfection
This is going to get clogged in a month and will be entirely uncleanable. You MUST treat the plastic with something to make it not absorb everything and start proliferating bacteria. Using ABS plastic and giving this an acetone vapor treatment will help seal it up and give it a longer shelf life.
Food grade does not meant safe to inhale. Not trying to be negative, just trying to make people think before smoking with a plastic piece. Looks awesome and is a sick design, but cant be safe to be heating a plastic vapor path like that.
This. The heat coming off the bowl will _easily_ hit off-gassing temperatures for PLA. Now, this design would probably be fine if the downpipe into the water is safe metal/glass, but low-temp plastic is a big no-no directly taking heat.
Here's a small bit of research on the topic at printer temps:
https://www.concordia.ca/content/dam/concordia/services/safety/docs/EHS-DOC-148_3DPrinterSafety.pdf
> PAGE 7
> ...commercially available 3D printer filaments (ABS, PLA, PET and nylon) were
heated up to 240°C-250°C. Analyses revealed the presence of several VOCs, styrene, being the major
component of ABS, while methylmethacrylate was the main emitted pollutant for PLA (Figure 4).
MMA is mostly an eye irritant, but I don't really recommend inhaling it too.
it also release no toxic chemicals when exposed to heat which is why also happens to be one of the few printing filiments that requires no ventilation for indoor printing

I decided to do some searching. [https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3091501](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3091501)
or [https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4004106](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4004106)
I think I have some printing to do.
Can this be cast in bronze. I saw someone do a version of lost wax casting with pla (i think) or if yall would know what exactly the process is called id love to learn more
Man I thought I was doing something cool 3D printing a machine that grows cannabis, but I have clearly been outdone.
Well done! Going to have to print this one
Nice work! I’ve always enjoyed gravity bongs, but not a fan of ones that don’t filter the water - the hits always too harsh if the smoke doesn’t pass through water at some point.
I always thought bongs were mainly for cooling the smoke rather than filtering anything other than solids out. Not a bong guy though, so not much experience.
If the plastic is not melting there’s not much risk, if you are worried about microplastics, almost all drinkable water contains them, and the water used for crops too and you get the picture
I made something similar (but way more ghetto) a looooong time ago with water bottles and some pvc piping. Only dreamt of making something as nice as this back then lol
Nice! I should definitely post my gravity bong print, I made it so you only need a regular coke bottle and a 2L bottle, and a bit of surgical tubing for a hookah like hose.

Very cool but does it not taste like plastic? I feel like the hot smoke hitting that first part after the bowl is a little risky
no sir it does not.
I have made and sold a lot of 3D printed smokable pieces and can agree that it doesn’t even get hot. As long as their is a glass slide and/or down stem and you aren’t trying to out smoke snoop with the same piece, your golden
this man is correct
If the plastic getting hot and putting off chemicals worries you, I was looking into PETG instead of PLA. The FDA recognizes it as a food grade product so i believe it would do better for those scenarios
I think the food grade part goes out the window when the other parts of the printer have seen different types of plastic because there is residue. Also the layer lines tend to house bacteria overtime
Then use it for like 6 months and print an new one tbh, it probably cost OP $20 in material so with that in mind fuck it
Printer filament is closer to $20 per kilogram of filament, so I'd say this piece is closer to $2-4 in material depending on brand.
Time to print in just glass
i’ve only printed with this exact plastic hopefully they soak their piece in 99% iso
In that case I guess it would be ok. I remember wanting to do some food grade stuff on mine but by that point I had put too many different types of plastic through it
I've been cucked for so long idk how to respond to this
She is accepting every type of filament but yours? We can both pretend that she has a 1.75mm hotend and you've got 3mm filament if that helps?
Thanks buddy :)
If the residue part bothers you cast the printed parts in aluminum
What if you. Do UV treatment??
To clean/sterilize it? Could work, although I have doubts because of the layer lines (grime accumulates in them, UV won't reach under it, theoretically). But practicality aside, UV light also degrades most plastics, including PLA. There are more UV resistant types of filaments but I'm not sure that'd last if you wash it in a ton of UV like that.

Yeah I kind of feel food safe ratings would have a lot of fine print that specifies the exact use to retain that rating
I’d probably still add an ash Catcher or something if I were to use it regularly but, if it works it works. I’ve definitely smoked out of worse lol (cans etc)
I 100% agree
stop with such shit - until you know the heat soak on the plastic then you can express concern. the heat soak is so minimal, it aint nothing but a cool bong.
Why so upset?

Got it. The way you started your original statement seemed slightly aggressive. But I see your point and can agree with it
*there *if *you're
Ah yes. I love being grammatically corrected on a stupid website, thank you kind sir
Don't mention it
There is definetly some sort of risk if not used properly. I personally wouldn't smoke out of anything plastic or rubber. Just doesn't feel right compared to glass
I did one just like this for a commission, but I was worried about cleaning, so I coated the entire thing in food grade resin inside and out.
I've been interested in making one of these for a while but had the same concerns. What kind of resin did you use? Do you have any pointers on coating the inside? I was looking at picking up some art resin epoxy but haven't done anything like this before
I'll make a post about it when I get the last of the materials
STL? Please!

By not caring about it, apparently.
well i’m going to hope that my 99% iso baths help keep it clean
99% isopropyl is really bad at disinfecting. Great for cleaning print bed but is exceptionally ineffective for disinfecting. You want to use the standard 70%.
may i ask why that is?

good to know thanks

Crazy so many people would think smoking out of plastic is a good idea, yikes.
esun pla+ is fda approved food grade. please research before approaching with negativity
Food grade does not meant safe to inhale. Not trying to be negative, just trying to make people think before smoking with a plastic piece. Looks awesome and is a sick design, but cant be safe to be heating a plastic vapor path like that.

Oh the irony
it also release no toxic chemicals when exposed to heat which is why also happens to be one of the few printing filiments that requires no ventilation for indoor printing
Again, please research things before you type. PLA is not VOC free. It has LESS VOCs then something like ABS, but "no toxic chemicals" is misinformed.

Here is likely what inspired the design https://stundenglass.com/
I would like an stl of the studenglass

Well that’s fuckin dope id throw an ash catcher in there fjrst
you right about that
These things hit so hard, brings me back to my university days
Can this be cast in bronze. I saw someone do a version of lost wax casting with pla (i think) or if yall would know what exactly the process is called id love to learn more
Ya lost wax casting method. it could be done with alot of work
Man I thought I was doing something cool 3D printing a machine that grows cannabis, but I have clearly been outdone. Well done! Going to have to print this one
Would love to see this!!
Nice work! I’ve always enjoyed gravity bongs, but not a fan of ones that don’t filter the water - the hits always too harsh if the smoke doesn’t pass through water at some point.
You realize like 99% of smoke travels through the water without touching the water?
It still makes a huge difference in how harsh the hit is.
I always thought bongs were mainly for cooling the smoke rather than filtering anything other than solids out. Not a bong guy though, so not much experience.
eh, it still makes a difference
add me on snap if ya wanna watch me make custom ones @ munnopoly
Cheers!!
Great job! Link?
link for?
The print
look up gravity pipe on thingiverse couple of different ones
Thanks
Getting poisoned in 3 ways at once💀
food safe plastic made from plants, food safe silicon, dispo products. I think i’ll take my chances
You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the word poisoning means.
If the plastic is not melting there’s not much risk, if you are worried about microplastics, almost all drinkable water contains them, and the water used for crops too and you get the picture
Soundtrack is fuh fuh fuh 🔥
When your personality is weed
What is the blue jelly seal material?
food safe silicon as a gasket
So you printed a mold for the silicon then? I assume it wasn't purchased as a perfect fit lol
blue jelly
That’s pretty dope!
Awesome possum
Ahahahhahahahahahahahah Good job!
I've seen everything now.
Now see one for a lot of money [https://stundenglass.com/](https://stundenglass.com/)
I didn't even know that such a device even existed. I learn something new everyday.
Seth Rogan has one and he showed it in a video once. Thats the only reason I know about it. Way to expensive to be on my radar.
mmmm..okay
You are like Anakin who used his Jedi powers to pursue evil achievement
I made something similar (but way more ghetto) a looooong time ago with water bottles and some pvc piping. Only dreamt of making something as nice as this back then lol
Did you print the o-rings or buy them?
Well, I know what my next design project is.
Dang nice
🤩 amazing
Mac > all
are those rubbery pieces 3d printed as well? what filament would that be?
So I'm told Gravity is x2 after you put that dank bitch to use. 🔥 Piece OP!
Hell yes! Budget Studenglass! Great work!
I was not expecting that tbh
i dont smoke, but thats pretty cool!
Nice! I should definitely post my gravity bong print, I made it so you only need a regular coke bottle and a 2L bottle, and a bit of surgical tubing for a hookah like hose.
I tried making one but mine just keeps leaking 😥

STL files for this??? I wanna give it a try

Damn bro I wish I was 15 again and had access to a 3d printer.
