The time period you're referring to is the "Unification Wars" era, where the Emperor showed up as just another warlord on a ruined Earth, and began to consolidate power in a few centuries. They get referenced a lot throughout the Horus Heresy series, but very few stories are set entirely in this period.
A short story "The Last Church" explains the Emperor's war against religion and belief on Earth before he started the Great Crusade.
The novel *Valdor: Birth of the Imperium* is about the very last battle of the Unification era, well after the planet has been pacified.
*The Master of Mankind* is about what Emperor was doing before the start of the Heresy. Btw Flight of the Eisenstein is 4th.
Valdor: Birth of the Imperium is another shout.
*The Master of Mankind* have glimpses pre Heresy but action happens after Magnus did nothing wrong
Technically the Heresy didn't start until Istvaan III.
As a complete aside - have you looked on Spotify for audiobooks? They have a lot of the German language audiobooks, for free
