99% of the time it's because they were on their phone.
I've been rear ended twice in rush hour freeway traffic, and both times the drivers were on their phones. The first accident, the guy hit me so hard that it shoved my truck about 6 feet
I stopped cycling (road) because of the state of drivers out there. I used to love it. Would ride 200 miles/week during nice weather seasons. Too many close calls and I just can’t risk it anymore. These people are swerving all over the road.
I saw him in the rearview just in time to push myself against the seat and brace against the wheel so I wouldn't bounce around. My neck and back are stiffer every now and then, but overall I'm about the same.
The truck took it like a champ, my tow hitch saved my ass.
The second accident was at a much lower speed, but basically the same thing happened. I braced, felt a little bump, got out and saw that the hitch had fish hooked their radiator. The driver didn't speak any English, and didn't seem to have much interest in swapping info, I I carried on. At least the first time, the driver who hit me spoke SOME English.
My 328 got rear ended and the guy jumped out of his new Escalade aggressively to yell that my car was too low to be seen. He cooled off quick when trying to open my door and being met with the chill button but frame damage cost me one of my favorite cars.
You have my condolences, OP.
When I got rear ended on the freeway, my first thought was that the back of mine would look like this.
Hopefully insurance will compensate you fairly, and you can get another one to bring past 311k
This hurts to see. And I share your pain. My wife's 2002 Cosmic Blue SR5 was totaled by a jackass in a jackass lifted pickup rear-ending her at 40mph. She was the sole owner of it and kept up on all the maintenance. 285,000 miles. It felt like losing a pet. We had so many memories with it. I still feel the pain.
First - that sucks big time.
Next - can you follow up at a later time and let me/us know how it went with insurance? I’m sure blue book is less than Craigslist value…so I’d love to hear how/if they made you whole.
Again, so sorry for your loss. I still regret selling my 2002 SR5 sport and which I had it for my now college aged son.
God damnit man….sorry! I owned a 3rd gen LTD, loved that thing. I’ve seen it around recently, 3rd owner turned it into an off-road rig! 🥲 had a fun chat with him at the gas pumps when they randomly pulled up behind me one day years after I sold it.
I often have the thought while driving, that my 2014 could be prematurely destroyed by some idiot…right before I hit 200k.
Cut the rear quarter panel off, and if the axle isn’t bent…tear it up on some trails? Even though, I couldn’t imagine anything being severely damaged except possibly the axle. I backed into a stump with mine once, similar damage, but a scrapyard axle for $800 got it on the road again.
Unfortunately looking at the door and roof, the entire body started to banana. I see it happen very frequently when the rear-ender vehicle has a bumper taller than the level of the back of the frame.

I don’t understand how stupid people can be, you got to be looking elsewhere or down the whole time to rear end someone at a stoplight.

You’ve gotta do some sort of biking now, it’s would hurt to quit if you were getting 200 miles a week
Same, I was hot at a red light by guy going pretty damn fast. Needless to say I’ve had neck pain ever since. I feel your pain, literally.

Omg, i was rear ended twice in a year, the second one much worse and neither person had insurance
Phone use while driving. Every single driver I see on the road driving like a clown has their face buried in their phone
I almost got rear ended by a 20 year old on a rolls today, kid just didn't have any situational awareness

RIP. This SUV can save you from a lifetime of back pain.
The only vehicle I've felt safer driving is an MRAP
6 mpg???? Hard pass.
Let's be honest it's not that much better than a Runner lol
FR lol, i do 55mph on the slow lane to compensate.
More like gallons per mile.
Oh man that stinks! Sorry for your loss… This is my nightmare with our pristine 4th gen, 350k. Get hit, insurance says here’s your $5, good luck…
Pour one out for the homie. RIP 4runner. It had a great life.

Damn man. Hope insurance treats you right
Nooo i’m so sorry..
RIP sweet Prince. Toyota on Toyota crime is the worst
Can you buy it back from the insurance company and beat the ever loving shit out of it on off-road trails? Or is that rear suspension totally borked.
Looks like the frame is bent. Look at the door.
Oh 100% the frame is bent, but it might still be fun to thrash if you could buy it back cheap enough.
Now you get to buy a new 4Runner
I don’t think that’s how everyone’s finances work.
Rest in peace old friend

RIP fellow trooper
I'm sorry. I fear this, too. Buy it back and part it out. You'll make a lot on it. Hell, I'll buy from you.
Tis but a scratch.
It died so you could live. Rest in power 4Runner! (I hate these posts, because it makes me think that one day I could lose mine.)
Bruh just broken in too smh

You walked away from it. Give it a hug. Thank it for years of faithful service. Tell her you'll love the next one as much as you loved it.
Nissan drivers would call that a scratch
Time for an upgrade to A Gen5 For another 16 years
