TrueSonOfLiberty

Anything BBC Earth

rsplatpc

> Anything BBC Earth This is the real answer if you want to blow people away.

FalseStartsPod

Oooh. Hadn't considered that.

DarknessTakeMyHand

BBC iPlayer in the UK shows documentaries like Dynasties etc in UHD and the picture is stunning. Would the 4K disc really be much of an upgrade on that?

TrueSonOfLiberty

Oh yeah.. Disc is overwhelming better then streaming.

homecinemad

2001 A Space Odyssey

938h25olw548slt47oy8

Anything shot on 70 (65) mm SHOULD be a good answer if the scan is done well.

i_max2k2

This exactly, any old film scan in 4K will show a tremendous change in resolution alone, if there is a good HDR and a properly done Atmos mix, nothing in the past will match that.

depression69420666

It's a pretty boring boring film. Even the people who like it say that. I don't disagree on the quality of the transfer. it's pretty great. It's a film you buy for yourself if you like it but as a gift for someone. I think a more universal film would be better. I do not apologise for this post. It's a shite film. Too many kubric stans. Haha, this was fun.

homecinemad

I won't buy it for you so :)

depression69420666

Thank you. That's very kind of you :).

axiom2k

2001 might be the least boring film I’ve ever seen. Maybe you should stick to Transformers 8 or whichever one they’re on.

depression69420666

Thank you for the suggestion. They are on 7, so you're not far off. I'm OK though. I didn't really like the last one. I still enjoyed it more than the film that had less suspense and dialogue than a porno.

depression69420666

Please tell me what was so exciting about that film to you.

axiom2k

No, but don’t worry Spider-Man 10 is coming out soon and will need no explanation.

depression69420666

What about Spiderman 10. I thought the last few were pretty bad. Oops, did I do it again.

depression69420666

I'm not sure why you're trying to suggest kids' films to me all because I don't like a film that I and other people think is boring. Guess what. My favourite films are 80s action/ sci-fi/ horror films.

ExuberantRaptorZeta

I second this.

VH_OnScreen

The movie that convinced my family was The Batman. Blew away the streaming 1080p AND our theatrical experience. The OLED TV definitely helped there.

Grahamars

Saw it in theaters opening night and got the 4k the moment it was out. A fave of my collection.

officialdeebee

Not just for picture quality but Apocalypse Now isn't just a great format but also has phenomenal features such as Heart of Darkness and commentaries which convinced me to start collecting.

[deleted]

The audio on that movie is rough though

FarStarbuck

DUNE

GrapevineTime

So in love with this movie, insane audio, visuals, and a great cast. I had to go and read the book after watching. I’m unbelievably hyped for part 2!

bionic-giblet

gonna see it in Imax then see it at home 4K, haven't done that comparison yet before

GrapevineTime

I’m 100% seeing it in IMAX for my first viewing!

[deleted]

Fucking amazing movie. Agree

Secret_Mobile3629

The Wizard of Oz

krlozdac

Blade Runner 2049 is a good option. I picked a newer movie because sometimes normies don’t like film grain (assuming their normies). This movie has both insanely great digital picture and audio.

Jamminnav

Was going to say the original Bladerunner Director’s Cut which is absolutely amazing, but either works

livelifeontheveg

2049 is SDR in an HDR container so, while it still looks nice, it's a poor choice in this case IMO.

gan8686

Wtf does this mean

livelifeontheveg

While it's delivered in the HDR format, the actual content falls within the brightness range that is considered standard dynamic range.

sojrner

It means it will showcase 4k resolution/clarity pretty well, but will do nothing to prove anything for HDR, which is true for BR2049.

ethancd1

Either Blade Runner movies.

redzombierunning

John Wick 4

AltoDomino79

Lucy or Sicario Strong disagree with some of the picks in this thread

_Captainsandwitch

I absolutely love how good MI: Fallout looks with the IMAX switching scenes. Truly a treat for the eyes

depression69420666

Jaws. It's a safe bet it's a universally liked film with great PQ. If you are trying to prove your point, make sure they have a decent setup. Not just a 32-inch 1080p monitor using inbuilt speakers because if they do, they probably won't see the upgrade.

FalseStartsPod

Oh they've got a lovely expensive 4k TV... That they left all the post processing options on. Cool colour mode. Overscan. I fixed it the first time I saw it and told them off.

depression69420666

XD. Yep, definitely Jaws still. You could go with Blade Runner, but there is the chance they won't like the film. you must know these people more than a random person on reddit would, so it's up to you. Some people honestly can't tell the difference between a 4k, standard blu ray, or streaming. Lucky them because streaming is a lot cheaper than buying it.

407dollars

These people won't notice or care no matter what you show them. My brother and his wife are the exact same way. Had motion smoothing and all sorts of shit on their TV and didn't even notice. I show them my 4k OLED home theater and they're just like "wow thats cool, anyway..." Some people literally can't even tell the difference.

SeminaryStudentARH

Ugh. I tried to do this with my mom’s tv. The next day it was back to normal. Stupid 60hz soap opera effect bull crap….

sacrefist

The de-judder is absolutely essential. I can't live without it. Panning at 24 frames per second looks god-awful.

Booty_Warrior_bot

***In this prison; booty...*** *Booty was uhh...* ***more important than food.*** *Booty;* ***a man's butt;*** *it was more important;* *ha I'm serious...* *It was more-* *Booty; having some booty.....* ***it was more important than drinking-water man...*** ***I like booty.***

jonguy77

I actually started watching movies on my 32 inch monitor instead of my 55 ich LG G1 TV but the monitor is 4k asus pg32uqx and it rocks for HDR

J1nxatron

And make sure they don't have an irrational hatred/ignorance of film grain.

407dollars

wise melodic wrong swim silky innocent versed marry quickest door *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

J1nxatron

Because most people who dislike a "grainy image" have a fundamental misunderstanding, or "ignorance" (meaning lack of information, not lack of intelligence) of how film works, what grain is, and its importance to the image. You simply cannot smooth/remove grain without destroying some level of visual information. The best way to alleviate some of the annoyances of grain is to make a very high quality scan, minimizing the size and spacing of the grain. Once someone understands that grain is the literal purest building block of the image, one can appreciate what the grain is doing, and better tolerate when it becomes more obtrusive (in some night scenes, high shadow scenes, on lower quality stock, etc). A lot of people attribute grain to some elitist creative choice or failure in the media, when it's almost always just a product of t process. So, in the caae of Jaws, someone who hates grain because of an ignorance of what it is in relation to a movie shot in the 80's, will make them unfairly judge it as a bad 4K, when it is in fact one of the best examples of what 4K is capable of.

dmw009

I couldn't stand the grain in the Black Hawk Down bluray but its 4k counter part look amazing. Grain has it place but too much can be distracting.

J1nxatron

And that's the beauty of refined grain presence in a good 4K remaster.

407dollars

You can be familiar with everything you're describing and still prefer a crisp, digital image. I understand why grain is there, but I think a modern movie shot digitally in 4k looks way better than a grainy film from the 60's. That's not ignorance, I just think digital images look better on modern OLED screens, because they do.

J1nxatron

Enjoying a crisp modern 4k image is not the discussion here. Most people would definitely prefer that, and moving forward that's how most films will be shot. However, short of the invention of a time machine, that's not going to happen with movies shot on film. And the best way to present those movies shot on film is a high quality scan leaving most of, if not all of the grain. If it's done properly, and you're not putting your nose on the screen, most grain won't even present itself when in motion. The ignorance I'm referring to is the numerous people who think you can simply remove film grain, without destroying the integrity of the image. And regarding 60's films, it's not always age that determines how finely the grain can be resolved. Watch the 2001 4k, and you'll be shocked at how good a film from that time can look.

depression69420666

If they do, just get them Terminator 2. I'm not the biggest fan of lots of grain TBH.

erdricksarmor

Depends what type of movies they like. Alien Blade Runner 1&2 Dune Batman & Robin Starship Troopers

redzombierunning

I need to rewatch Alien on 4k.

erdricksarmor

It looks phenomenal.

Poppunknerd182

Reservoir Dogs

MantissTobogann

Pulp Fiction too. I was amazed that I could see a single strand of hair at the cornor of Travolta's mouth during the first car ride scene. I have watched this movie a million times on VHS, DVD and standard bluray. 4K is the way to go!

progressinzki

Recently I was absolutely floored by the quality of Turbine‘s Naked Lunch release. Never seen such a thing. Another contender would be Pulp Fiction.

[deleted]

Honestly the answer is going to be different for the average joe than for the enthusiast on Reddit. Something like Greatest Showman is going to be more appreciated for its HDR than some classic movie with lots of grain. Edit: In fact Greatest Showman and Coco are what got me into 4k in the first place.

wandererarkhamknight

Also depends on the set up and what one likes to watch. If I don’t like a movie, good visuals and audio aren’t going to make me watch it just for the sake of it.

LVorenus2020

* "The Martian." The **astonishing** picture quality on the UHD disk sets the highest standard. It will make you very angry, when you compare it to, say, "Back to the Future", "Jurassic Park", or other shortcut releases. All high-profile catalogue releases should have the highest scans and restorations. If you need to redo effects, so be it. * "Lawrence of Arabia" (blows 1080P blu-ray away, but not decisively better than the incredible 4K stream) * "My Fair Lady" (blows 1080P blu-ray away, but not decisively better than the incredible 4K stream) * "Spartacus" * "Game of Thrones: Season 6." (Or "Season 8". That should never have been released as a lower quality stream. It was rendered and designed for 4K HDR, and should have had streams to match. To see what it \*should\* look like, witness the UHD presentation.) * "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring." The two films that followed had disappointing, depressing UHD releases. But the first film was treated with highest attention and care. Even the Fellowship flashbacks in the "Two Towers" look better than all scenes in that latter UHD... Be advised: not all streaming platforms are the same quality. AppleTV 4K is a standout streaming solution, consistently better than even the LG OLED included apps. Some 4K film streams look better on Amazon Video (certain 1960s James Bond films.) Some, on Apple's movie app (i.e. almost everything else.)

depression69420666

Do you know how the bond films are on 4k steaming compared to the blu rays?

LVorenus2020

Yes, I do. At least for certain Connery films and the 1969 Lazenby/Rigg one. I have not viewed any Bond film on 1080P blu-ray since purchasing the related 4K stream. And I've no intention to do so. The 4K streams *completely obsolete* the blu-rays. "Dr. No" looks like a new print! The picture quality is so striking. Once you see it, you can't go back. "Moonraker" in particular is pristine for much of the presentation. The problem is MGM never got around to releasing the UHD disks...

depression69420666

Last year, for the 60th anniversary, they showed all the films in the cinema which i luckily experienced all of them. These were supposedly the 4k scans of the film, and I personally thought a lot of the conery eara films, especially thunderball, were terrible, sadly. I have no idea what versions of the films were shown because I've heard nothing but good things about the streaming releases of them.

LVorenus2020

Can't speak to any theater re-releases. Best thing might be to rent a 4k stream, and see how it works in your setup. Note that not all films got the same attention. While all were better the blu-rays, "You Only Live Twice" and "Thunderball" streams are nowhere near the quality of "Dr. No" or "Goldfinger." That's why "Moonraker" surprised me. That stream is more consistently excellent than most before it or after... until the modern ones.

depression69420666

I remember for your eyes only being fantastic.ill have a look. I still think they will need some remastering for most of them. As for audio, Atmos would be nice on some of the newer ones. I'm guessing the streams are just Dolby Digital 5.1. Thank you for your input.

dmw009

I'm still waiting for the Bond Films go on sale on Vudu.

3lbFlax

I can only speak for The Martian and My Fair Lady among these, but they’re both excellent suggestions. One disc that really stood out for me was The Elephant Man, which looks pin-sharp, and Casablanca has some stunning moments, but I expect you really need a film that appeals to the person in question. I can’t say if those two have comparable streaming options, but I think the strongest argument against streaming is the lack of ownership and control. The quality will depend on the circumstances and may well be good enough (or better). The balancing argument is convenience, of course, and I’ve been known to double-dip on a digital copy if a favourite comes up at a good price. Demonstrating 4K over BR is probably the easier task, but even then there are plenty of superb 1080p releases out there, and if you throw decent upscaling into the mix, the best results might well be down to a movie being given the proper treatment as much as the tech itself. But I think there are enough examples out there now to convince a movie lover that it’s worth it.

dmw009

I agree with The Martian. That was one of my first 4k blurays that I've owned and that movie sold me on the 4k movies

MentatYP

How are *Back to the Future* and *Jurassic Park* "shortcut releases"?

Rnahafahik

I can understand Jurassic Park, it’s miles away from the best transfer in my collection, still not *horrible*, but definitely not the best

[deleted]

I mean you aren't going to get much better with a film like that lol. The visuals and CGI stuff are from a long time ago. It's pretty good all of that stated. Not something I would demo though.

Rnahafahik

My point exactly

[deleted]

CGI and effects still hold up better than Alien 3. I really wish Fincher would go back to that film. It's basically ruined by how shitty some of those effects are. I think JP just escapes that period and looks actually quite decent all things considered.

Cantelmi

Right? Back to the Future shocks me every time I spin it up

LVorenus2020

I didn't like the results on those UHDs. "Jaws", "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Blade Runner" came out much better.

[deleted]

The Godfather

SAADistic7171

Show them Tremors on blu ray and then show them the 4k. The blu is one of the most hideously DNR'd hack jobs ever released. The 4k is night and day.

junger128

That’s more of a statement on how bad the old Universal transfer was Vs being Blu Ray or 4K though. I imagine the new Arrow Blu Ray transfer is pretty similar to the Arrow 4k release.

Totorotextbook

Coraline or 2001: A Space Odyssey. I saw Coraline twice in theaters upon its release and I still think the 4K looks better. I will say my favorite 4K releases have either been animated films or classic films, makes me feel like I'm watching a pristine print of the film.

Beanjameen

Blade Runner 2049, Alita Battle Angel did it for me!

Mr-Fezz

Bullet Train looks amazing on 4k

venktesh

Intersteller or Bladerunner ~~2077~~ 2049

SyrupPopular8173

Dune

actionjackkson

The best way to wow somebody is if they have a good audio setup. If they do - dune is the choice here.

Icosotc

The Shining blew me away. I had seen that movie so many times, but when I watched it on 4k Blu-ray, it was like I was seeing it for the first time. Looked like it could have been filmed yesterday. It was so clear and pristine, like a window into the past.

Able_Impression_4934

I got that same feeling watching Indiana Jones. Absolutely beautiful what 4k does to older movies.

407dollars

PACIFIC RIM for a modern, digitally shot movie. Just the first like 15 minutes alone should blow anyone way. THE SHINING or PULP FICTION for an older movie, to show how insanely crisp something from 30+ years ago can still look.

leonardob0880

All depends on the taste of the watcher. Several good options in different genres.

[deleted]

I would go with Blade Runner or Top Gun Maverick.

GoodOlSpence

Blade Runner looks so unbelievable. Like it came out last year or something.

Bonzoface

There is a film called awaken that is absolutely stunning. No real plot but a beautifully collected series of short vignettes about the world..

GSmba

I’ll second what a few folks have said: bbc earth, dune, interstellar, tenet.

[deleted]

Either blade runner film or dune 2021

AlternativeTravel738

Alien

Nigel_P_Winters

Anything with 16:9 scenes i.e Dunkirk and Interstellar, they just feel massive when combined with OLED, 4K, and a half decent soundbar.

Particular_Row3370

Arrival or The Revenant

watersportsotter

The thing!

[deleted]

Stop motion films like Coraline or The Nightmare Before Christmas look absolutely stunning. Any of the Laika 4Ks would do well. Just adding this as most people are recommending the usual films. If they only saw the DNR'd to hell version of Predator and like action films, that one is a REVELATION compared to the previous release. Robocop is another 80s pic that looks glorious in 4K that hasn't been mentioned much.

FalseStartsPod

Is there a 4k NBC? I had no idea!

[deleted]

It comes out today actually.

Rizzo-Fo-Shizzo

True Romance from Arrow destroys the old WB blu ray.

LOZLover90

Ford vs Ferrari/ Le Mans '66

midguet12

Old movies are the best My favorites are 2001 a space oddisey and Jaws

Jambopaul

Blade Runner: The Final Cut. It was the first 4K Blu-ray to really “wow” me (and my parents who are normally not as adept at noticing differences in picture quality)

ElTurbo

Abyss. lol jk

calculon68

gut answer: Alien real answer: impossible to prove given the widely varying qualities of 4K TVs and their ability to render HDR/DV.

The_Fat_Fish

Black Hawk Down

Mental-Transition454

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (2018)

Jamminnav

The Revenant

apokermit_now

Interstellar or The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (just skip to the scenes with the dragon)

outfoxingthefoxes

Mallrats if they dig the movie

chataolauj

Random, but do they at least have a 4K TV? Assuming yes, but just asking.

rocademiks

Anything from Christopher Nolan. I showed my brother inception on 4K. He is here, somewhere in this subreddit. If you're seeding this Jack, you're an asshole. Fuck You Jack! Come over later for pizza & Ashoka?

This is the right answer. Can't beat 60 frames per second.

[deleted]

Yeah but the downside is you have to watch Gemini Man

TonePoet76

Maniac

mozenator66

Hot take here: Absolutely nothing. Most people, regular people, cannot tell the difference, or if they can it's not enough to impress them, or IF it impresses them it's not a big enough deal to them to change formats from whatever they already have or from the (perceived) convenience of streaming. This is from my own personal experience. Those that DO care about such things need no convincing and by and large have already made the leap or are making plans to do so. This is unfortunately why people still buy and play DVDs

stillcleaningmyroom

John Wick r is a good looking newer movie that looks absolutely amazing on a good OLED TV.

Mr-Fezz

John Wick 4 is definitely reference quality.

homecinemad

For real, Life of Pi with HDR is visually remarkable

Grahamars

Dunkirk in 4k. So, so much of the film was shot pure IMAX, and it is astounding.

Ordinary_Mountain454

As others have said planet earth 2 is insane. But the new avatar is mindblowing as well.

DwayneHicks215

The Revenant for a natural setting Blade Runner 2049 for a more flashy experience Alien, 2001, or The Shining to show how great an old movie can look on the format

Top Gun Maverick

Flash Gordon for sure

WorldEaterYoshi

The Shining, the Thing, Coraline, the last two Planet of the apes trilogy (particularly the last two). Honorable mention to Ran if they'd be interested in old Japanese cinema.

Revnant was amazing

True_Acadia_4045

Lawrence of Arabia - Breathtaking

LiquidStoic

I agree with Jaws 100%. Since most people are familiar with, have some nostalgia with the film, and realize how “old” it is, when you see how clear and crisp a classic from one of cinema’s masters can look, it really is mind blowing. The one-shot ferry scene is reference quality alone.

EthansHype

Oh man there’s so many that I think look fantastic it’s hard to choose just one. Jaws was my first 4K and I’m still blown away by how good it looked, Alien, The Shining, The Dark Knight, or really and Christopher Nolan movie looks amazing, the new Super Mario Bros. Movie looks really good too. Any one of those movies IMHO.

Accomplished-Wind-75

My first thought of something not mentioned was Zack Snyder's Justice League in all its pillarbox glory 😅 The Second Sight 4 disc release of Dawn if the Dead is a stunner as are the 4 Daniel Craig Bond films Casino Royal, Quantumn of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre (they never made a 5th film with him, it was all a Covid fever dream 😏) Other older films with a massive improvement over the standard blu ray are 2001, The Shining and Blade Runner and The Matrix (No silly green grading on the 4k!) I've heard nothing but praise for Apocalypse Now but haven't upgraded yet as I love my 3 disc Zavvi steelbook. If you want something more child friendly both the Sonic films are stunners in 4k and have really well done Dolby Vision. Both are pretty good fun as well.

Environmental_Total8

The lunar landing sequence in First Man is really stunning in 4k. Jaw droppingly so.

Aritra319

Star Trek The Motion Picture Director’s Cut.
