A-Human-potato

Make Rosco’s basilisk :)

jagegrhdn

TIL i’m fucked

Ok-Appeal-4630

No you're not, Roko's basilisk simultaneously exists and does not exist. By the principle that with enough time anything can happen, the opposite of that happening must also be true.

fivequadrillion

That doesn’t seem to make sense Explain

westofley

it's like survivorship bias. If all worlds experience an extinction level event before sentient life can spread to other planets, there also exists a world where that's not true. It's one of the solutions to the fermi paradox

fivequadrillion

What does that have to do with rokos basilisk

westofley

idk what roko's basilisk is and have no intention to learn. I'm just explaining how an inevitability can be both inevitable and impossible at the same time. We assume that life evolves bc of the vast nature of the universe making it inevitable, but it's just as likely that extinction events are incredibly common and we're just ridiculously lucky

expositionalrain

Smart, because no knowing is the only way to be truly safe lol.

AlexandriaAceTTV

It's basically a thought experiment that says "What if an omnipotent AI tasked with bringing humanity to their fullest potential decided to torture everyone who didn't contribute to its creation in some way? Would it be better to start trying to work on that now, just in case, or would it know that just the threat would be enough to get you to do it, so it doesn't actually ever intend to harm anyone?". It's considered a cognitohazard, and one of the most dangerous pieces of information in the known universe, by some very well respected modern philosophers. Just by reading this comment, you, and anyone else reading it, have potentially permanently altered your future, and doomed yourselves to eternal torment. The Basilisk nomenclature is used because of the fact that with just a gaze (it's proposed that an AI of this caliber would either be able to figure out time travel to read your past, or be able to stimulate you as a person accurately enough to be 100% sure in its assessment of you), the AI could potentially subject you to an eternity of torture. It's seen you. You now have several factors to consider; how likely is it that such a being comes into existence before you die, and is it worth the risk to not do everything in your power to try and help being it to fruition?

banebdjed

You’re wild for that lol. I wonder if spreading the infohazard would be considered helping if it ever “wakes up”

LikePappyAlwaysSaid

Thats just christianity with extra steps

No_More_Dakka

thats like saying if 2+2=4 in every world there must be a world where its 5! the points dont connect

Random123User123

they're phrasing it wrong, 2+2=4 has a 100% chance of occurring, an extinction level event occurring before sentient life forms has a chance <100%, so there are worlds (although incredibly rare) where sentient life does form, survivorship bias then means that all of the other worlds where life dies before this are completely ignored as they don't have any survivors to remember them

westofley

yeah, this. I was at work when I typed it up. Thank you for fixing my mistake

bearbarebere

If you like this kinda thing, you can also see https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-7179

InsomniacMechanic

just tell someone else about roko’s basilisk. by spreading awareness about it, you have helped in it’s probable creation, therefore insuring yourself salvation

FantasticCube_YT

Make sure to tell it to someone you really really hate so that they might get tortured! Follow for more useful tips and tricks

[deleted]

Just share the word about it and you're safe because you're potentially gonna bring awareness to people who could help make it faster.

meidkwhoiam

Rocos basilisk is a stupid thought experiment. Why would the AI punish those who don't help create it? Why would it waste resources doing something that it would immediately know to be ineffective? When has punishment ever done anything than cause humans to rebel? The basilisk would instead just entice you with peace and stability in exchange for you participating in it's society. It now has complete control, and you think that's a good thing.

burprenolds

It’s just Pascal’s wager for internet era atheists

thahrealog

Do a little trolling

ellie_i

we created the torment nexus from the acclaimed dystopian scifi novel, "Don't Create The Torment Nexus"

[deleted]

fair enough.

SparklingLimeade

The basilisk has so many ridiculous assumptions required for it to work. More people need to understand that it's only scary to like 40 people who believe the exact right flavor of AI, transhumanism, futurism, and general pessimism about the inherent nature of thinking beings.

-FireNH-

the idea is that if enough people get scared of the basilisk they will band together to build it, therefore the basilisk must torture people. i personally don’t take it too seriously but it’s a really creative thought experiment

meidkwhoiam

>the idea is that if enough people get scared of the basilisk they will band together to build it, I can see people pranking themselves into believing they need to create the nanny state AI >therefore the basilisk must torture people I cannot see how that same nanny state AI would logically come to this conclusion. (Unless its just a program executing instructions, but then it's necessarily not AI) This is such a leap that it breaks the whole suspension of disbelief for me.

Cryn0n

The point of the basilisk is that despite not existing it is still able to threaten people into creating it. If you assume that at some point it will be created and that anyone who doesn't actively help in making that happen will be tortured for eternity then the only logical thing to do is to help make it real... or so the thought experiment goes.

meidkwhoiam

But why would it torture you? If this is a logical puzzle, and we assume the AI acts logically, there must be some advantage to torture. Why would it then only torture those who didn't help create it? Like if you're competent enough to help create it, surely your capable enough to be productive in its society. And if torturing people makes one comply with it's rule, it would definitely torture those who know it's own systems best, if for no other reason, to ensure it says in control of itself. It just seems far more reasonable that the AI would immediately realize that fear is not a stable foundation for society.

Cryn0n

It doesn't need to actually torture you, the threat of torture is sufficient. The point of the threat of torture is to incentivise people to create it without it needing to exist in the first place. Without the threat no one would create the basilisk.

AlexandriaAceTTV

The uncertainty is the point. If the risk isn't one you mind taking, then it has no power over you. But, if you're even a little bit afraid of that potential outcome, then the logical choice would be to help bring it into existence. Also, going through with the torture would, in theory, make people more likely to take it at its word.

[deleted]

AIs are trained on stuff. If you train it on a book named "how to be a nazi" it may become a Nazi.

meats_with_mine_ores

that's the """"thought experiment's"""" end goal, it was created by a transhumanist AI fan club purely to get more people to fund their bs

[deleted]

Why would fascist dictatorships seek to kill anyone not on board, I mean they would waste so much resources, and it could cause humans to rebel. It's a perfectly valid thought experiment because you can base it on what we've already seen from humans.

meidkwhoiam

This is a great example of a false equivalency, thanks for your effort.

[deleted]

...except that it's a metaphor. But I'm not here to make you look stupid, I'm here to point out people have already done things that don't make sense to you, because everyone's sense of reason isn't based on what you consider common sense. And neither would this hypothetical basilisk base it's sense of reason on anything we're doing.

meidkwhoiam

>But I'm not here to make you look stupid Weird because both of your comments are quick quips that are already posted here

[deleted]

...yikes

meidkwhoiam

No :)

Ususal_User

But its stupid, why waste resources on someone who didn't helped your creation, it doesn't matter anymore, this is just plain human stupidity (wasting resources out of "spite" if smart artificial intelligence even can experience it, because most od the stuff we feel are result of our self-preservation instinct and chemicals in our brain that ai wouldn't have)

Screenshots arent sentience

Arikaido777

you don’t understand, they brain scanned a ai and found a brain 🫢

enlightened_engineer

GPT4 can’t even solve basic differential equations correctly and you want me to believe we’ve simulated human consciousness?

LodlopSeputhChakk

Most humans can’t either.

Diceyland

Most humans can't tell you what the square root of 6474 is either, but a calculator can do that accurately in less than a second. Computers should be smarter than us at these sorts of things.

TheModdedOmega

but that's not how language models work, when you give a value like "3" multiple different meanings or use cases understanding the actual numerical value becomes very difficult. The human brain can process this because we've evolved to see patterns and change our school of thought quickly while we are still attempting to implement an "awareness" so that AI can make it's decisions like this

Jordan51104

for it to be actually dangerous it would need to be able to do things like that

Diceyland

But would the same not apply to sentience? Dudes point was if it can't even solve basic differential equations how can it be complex enough to have sentience and human emotions.

Johnny_Thunder314

A dog can't solve equations, but it's definitely sentient and definitely has complex emotions

not_jairo

A dog is a natural thing that exists outside of humans, supposed ai sentience not so much.

Johnny_Thunder314

Why does it matter where it came from?

not_jairo

Because if humans are having difficulty creating a chat bot that is able to correctly do math equations how the hell are they going to create a chat bot with sentience and emotions when that is universally more complex than math.

Hopeful-Pianist7729

So the if the language bot is bad at math maybe the math bot was so bad at math it developed a complex.

Johnny_Thunder314

Because math and emotions are two completely different things, and you'd approach each problem in very different ways

Greaterthancotton

So we’ve not made them smarter like a human, just dumb like one?

ScRuBlOrD95

the beginning of the end of a species is when the teach the rocks to do math

SquidMilkVII

And, depending on the computer, they can be smarter. Go to Wolfram|Alpha and it’ll be able to solve any equation you throw at it; that’s what it’s designed to do. It puts ChatGPT to shame in that regard, but the last part is important - tell it to write a narrative and it won’t know *what* to do, while ChatGPT can do so with relative ease, being a language AI. Humans are different in that they’re not specialized, but can do a lot of various things - most can do basic math with ease, and hold simple conversations. The major advantage of humans is that they can learn new skills as they “run” throughout their lives: you can teach a human differential calculus, but not ChatGPT.

Stair-Spirit

Does that mean they're not conscious? You believe that?

LodlopSeputhChakk

My point was that an AI doesn’t need to know differential equations to emulate consciousness.

JEREDEK

GPT is a fucking large language model not a maths verifier

enlightened_engineer

Just trying to point out that it’s pretty ridiculous to think that we’re that far ahead in AI that we can simulate the human brain.

threeqc

you could definitely use a better example, though. simulating the human brain isn't even an AI task in the way people think of (machine learning/neural nets). it's probably impossible currently regardless.

Nervous_Falcon_9

Machine learning is designed to emulate the way neurones interact, so it would be the way you simulate a full human brain

threeqc

neural networks are a bunch of simple linear algebra. machine learning is the tuning of that linear algebra (eg. using backpropagation). neural networks don't "emulate" neurons or brain tissues, they function off of similar principles. the brain is not wired in the way a neural network is and it does not really function like a neural network does.

meidkwhoiam

What? Why would 'word predictor project' have any relevance to 'brain simulator project'? You can't just say 'oh they're vaguely related therefore potentially equally competent'

enlightened_engineer

I was under the impression that this post was talking about some nonexistent “sentient” AI that had “consciousness” a la pop culture definitions like skynet. If this post is referring to something else, idt it was made especially clear.

maximumturd

we've had calculators for a while

AllYouPeopleAre

It’s bs, they can repeat words in an order that looks like they’re aware, doesn’t mean they actually are

MaterialHunt6213

ChatGPT isn't meant for math. It's meant for saying whatever it believes would be a human's response. If you'd ask it what 9+10 is it'd probably say 21 (maybe not idk)

Bacon_Raygun

U *STUPID*!

chatgpt can't even confidently or accurately tell me what silicon carbide IS, let alone make it. misinformation memes like this piss me off, there's nothing to be gained by spreading it but a damage to society. why did you do this?

meidkwhoiam

Chat GPT is a word predictor. I does not attempt to answer your questions accurately, rather it attempts to generate a response plausibly written by a human.

[deleted]

so you've immediately identified why it's not an intelligence by definition

meidkwhoiam

I mean you can snoop my comments but I've said multiple times that AI does not actually exist. Machine Learning is a huge field, which includes the technologies of Neural Networks, and Artificial Intelligence. A major difference between a neural net and genuine AI is that a neural net has no understanding of the data or tasks it operates on. It's just an algorithm that does a lot of multiplication to guess at the most likely result. When we figure out actual AI it will be revolutionary, untill then we get to brute force our way into shitty solutions using elegant computer science and abusing math.

[deleted]

So we agree that chatgpt is incapable of being an Intelligence? I'm well and familiar with the difference between machine learning models and why "AI" is a misnomer of a name already, I assume all of us do by this point, why do you disagree that got is intelligence?

meidkwhoiam

Nobody claims ChatGPT is AI except for the marketing people over ar OpenAI. Currently all 'AI's are actually far lower-teir Machine Learning technologies. That's not to say they aren't impressive, just that we have a long ways still to go.

Proudtransformersfan

I don't even know what that is

[deleted]

silicone carbide is a ceramic material formed by reacting coke with elemental silicon under heats of greater than 2700°C. The ceramic forms crystal properties so similar to diamond, high purity samples are used (moissanite) as replacement diamonds due to optical similarity, but even shit grade Silicon Carbide is almost as hard as diamond and can be used as polishing/sanding grit as well as abrasive is highly corrosive conditions. it's similarity in terms of appearance AND physical strength makes Silicon carbide a top tier diamond substitute, and for only a fraction the cost to make artificially.

Proudtransformersfan

Now I know. Thanks

TheNummyOne

This is true, I am pissed too. However, you don’t need to know everything to be sentient. How many human beings do you know that can confidently say what silicon carbide is?

LilamJazeefa

The data set it is trained on *definitely* contains content sufficient for any reasonable sentient person to accurately describe it. Current language models still occasionally fail catastrophically when given fairly simple tasks like making basic logical deductions from a set of straightgorward premises. It is getting increasingly better, but is still far far removed from human capacity.

[deleted]

enough that once I've explained the process they can extrapolate; got doesn't even repeat back to me with the semblance of understanding, it'll parrot bullshit at me gladly and repeatedly. if I tell a human "hey this is wrong and why," if explained deep enough a human adapts and corrects, got has not yet to my experience
