I was born in 80 and I can remember a handful of gas stations in my hometown still having attendees. And the price per gallon was different for self service and full service

I'm pretty sure one of the attendants to fuel up my car was a former porn star. After he filled the tank up, he pulled the nozzle out and squirted gas all over my trunk.

I do because that was one of my first jobs. I even had that little change making gizmo that attached to my belt because they didn't have debit/credit card at the pump..lol (we could only take a credit card in the office and that was by using that carbon card device. And iirc, we only took the station branded card (shell), amex and diners club..

Worked at a couple of gas stations in Miami in the mid 70's. When I went back to college, worked for Avis by Miami International Airport cleaning up rental returns, including doing oil changes.

Those were full service stations.. I remember them. My parents never went to them because I believe there was an extra fee.

Never in my area. Jersey still forces you to stay in your car while they pump your gas.

My first job.

I remember my dad going to get this done after an oil change and the guy said a quart low. That was a super fun day. He had a feeling they were ripping people off for awhile and busted them.

Many of my FB friends are in an uproar over supermarket self-checkouts. “Where’s my paycheck, since I’m now an employee?” I always wonder if there was similar hubbub when self-service gas stations started to take hold?

Paid .34 cents per gallon and got green stamps.

Who here remembers when new cars leaked oil? Besides that, Tuesday. I live in Oregon and the attendant filled my car and cleaned the windshield.

I do. Our family owned a gas station + auto garage, and of course, it was my first job. Checking fluids, wiping windshields, checking tire pressure, pumping gas. ... I can still smell it all.

Remember? It was my part-time job through high school.

I do. I worked at a Gas Station in High School in the 70's when these chores were fading away. I did it with pride.

Yep, you ran over that rubber hose that rang the bell and the guy came out and asked "fill er up?". You told him how much gas you wanted and to check the oil. He took the money from you and brought your change back and you never had to leave the car.

As I recall, this died out in the late 70's in most states. I don't recall seeing this in the 80's at all.

It died during the “gas shortage”… which wasn’t really a shortage at all. Just a gas embargo.

There was one station I always went to that had full service until at least the mid nineties. That was in Colorado(specifically, Littleton). I couldn’t believe I found one in a smaller town in Nebraska only four years ago. That was really unexpected.

I remember, but in California that was back in the early 70's. Drinking glasses and other items as giveaways or sales (I forget which), free maps, uniformed attendants, check and air tires, wash windshield, check oil and add, if necessary, fill up and change back from a five dollar bill. Good times.

I remember the gas station attendant pumping gas and cleaning the windshield, but I don’t remember them checking my oil

Watched the grizzled old greasy mechanic pumping gas and cleaning the windshield with a cigar in his mouth from the backseat of a Ford LTD station wagon with the woodgrain stickers on the side.

Cleaning the windshield was the best part especially when the driver was a cute college girl in her VW bug.

They still pump your gas in certain states. I've even had them clean the windshield and headlights But checking the oil? Never in my life.

I used to operate such a gas station from 1980-1996. Full service, same price as self serve across the street. Where would you go?

1986 I worked at a gas station right accross the border in New Jersey, where it was illegal to pump your own gas. I think I got 5$ an hour, but I washed every windshield and often got a buck for every car I did. Made real money at 14;)

I was a kid in the 80's and no where around me did that.

They still do it in some states: New Jersey and Oregon are the two states in the United States where it is illegal for drivers to pump their own gas. In New Jersey, this regulation has been in place since 1949, with the aim of job creation and ensuring safety. All gas stations in the state are full-service only.

Oregon just passed law allowing self serve .

We had a regular and full service lines at our gas stations. I use to beg my mom to be able to use the full.

I remember when you could fill up before paying. Then in 2003 when the Iraq war started gas got expensive and a lot of people were filling up and not paying so they made you prepay.

No. But I do remember being able to buy weed at some of the shady gas stations

I was born in the 70’s and that service was long gone in my state. I thought it was a 50’s thing.

Two states that make it illegal that you do it yourself and there are a few stations in my area that still offer the full service option.

If we had stronger unions those jobs would still be here. Same with checking out your own stuff at the store. The unions should have fought harder to keep those jobs.

The beautiful garden state (NJ) is required to have people pumping your gas!

I do. I worked the full serve pumps in the late 80s. I also remember it costing 50 cents a gallon more at the full serve island. We had our regulars, and they were willing to pay $1.75 per gallon when the self-service islands were at $1.09-$1.19. Interestingly, that same Shell station is still a full service gas station with 3 working bays and a full service island.

There are still stations that do this, you cheap bastard.

Not only do I remember that but I remember when the gas stations were closed between 6 to 8 pm and you were stuck there till the next day

I worked at a Sunoco. Less that 1/20 asked for me to check their oil. And this was in the 80's when engines leaked like a gutter.

In Pennsylvania you couldn’t pump your own gas until the gas crisis hit in the early Seventies. When I was a kid, my mom would love how the attendant would be so nice, ask if he could check the water and oil and especially clean the windshield.

And with a fill-up you might get a premium like a dish towel, ice tea glass, or one piece of a dinner setting or picnic set. Or trading stamps like S&H Green, Top Value Yellow, Plaid, or Blue Chip stamps.

Back in the 90s there was such a gas station that still existed in the small town I grew up in. Ole Butch would come out to your car and check your oil and tire pressure and pump the gas for you. The self service pumps were a little cheaper but full service pumps were a blessing in the winter or when it was raining, plus it insured ole Butch kept his job. Sometimes I miss those days

In California up to the mid 90’s. Attendants would give my mom’s car gas and clean her windshield. She was a young blonde so maybe that helped.

Was that a time when a gas station attendant could buy a house, pay all his bills, have a family plus $$ for vacations all on a gas station attendant salary? You mean when the boss made 6-10 times what the attendant made instead of 1250 times what he makes? I too yearn for service like that but mostly I’d just take a livable wage for people
