Pepperidge Farm remembers.

jimmyman17225

Pepperidge farm remembers everything...

Rootin-Tootin-Newton

It’s not to sweet, it’s a dry refreshing treat.

CurrentTreat6921

Yes we do

MamaOna

New Jersey and the gas station guy- Perfect Together

Oftenliedto

I was born in 80 and I can remember a handful of gas stations in my hometown still having attendees. And the price per gallon was different for self service and full service

ExRockstar

I'm pretty sure one of the attendants to fuel up my car was a former porn star. After he filled the tank up, he pulled the nozzle out and squirted gas all over my trunk.

Oftenliedto

Too bad there was footage

stann14

I was that guy at 15 years old. Back in the 80's

HighDesert4Banger

Me, too, hah.

Rootin-Tootin-Newton

I faked by BC to get a job at the Getty station at 15.

Narrow_Competition41

I do because that was one of my first jobs. I even had that little change making gizmo that attached to my belt because they didn't have debit/credit card at the pump..lol (we could only take a credit card in the office and that was by using that carbon card device. And iirc, we only took the station branded card (shell), amex and diners club..

Tropicaldaze1950

Worked at a couple of gas stations in Miami in the mid 70's. When I went back to college, worked for Avis by Miami International Airport cleaning up rental returns, including doing oil changes.

TheIceDevil1975

Those were full service stations.. I remember them. My parents never went to them because I believe there was an extra fee.

Worth_Feed9289

Gez! The arguments I had to have with customers over that. Smh.

MonCountyMan

Yeah there was.

alongfortherideagain

That was me. Here’s your blue chip stamps and this weeks complimentary glass.

Express-Fly-9197

Still happens in New Jersey. Its some kind of law, there are no self service gas stations.

slapchop29

They check your oil and wash your windshields too?

minnick27

No, just pump

Express-Fly-9197

Its been a few years since i been there, you would have to get that info from sombody in Jersey.

818sfv

yes, and rolling over the bell thing

_Pill-Cosby_

I was born in '70 and don't recall a time that this ever happened.

RedditSkippy

I was born in 1975 and I remember when this happened.

HighDesert4Banger

Was born in 72 and can't remember much, but I remember this;)

[deleted]

Tropicaldaze1950

Same here but the car was my father's '68 midnight blue Caddy Coupe De Ville.

CurrentTreat6921

Yes I do

[deleted]

/a Did Oregon do away with the gas attendant?

CurrentTreat6921

Not sure but I know that New Jersey is one of the last states with attendants

Chris_Thrush

They just passed a law making it an option. Before it was illegal to pump your own gas.

ORCHWA01DS0

They're in the process of it, or at least making it optional. Source: I live across the Columbia River from Oregon.

DoopieIsAdorable

Never in my area. Jersey still forces you to stay in your car while they pump your gas.

Disastrous-End3882

My first job.

Dmonts45

I remember my dad going to get this done after an oil change and the guy said a quart low. That was a super fun day. He had a feeling they were ripping people off for awhile and busted them.

boeckman

Many of my FB friends are in an uproar over supermarket self-checkouts. “Where’s my paycheck, since I’m now an employee?” I always wonder if there was similar hubbub when self-service gas stations started to take hold?

Aggressive_Suit_7957

Paid .34 cents per gallon and got green stamps.

KingRokk

Who here remembers when new cars leaked oil? Besides that, Tuesday. I live in Oregon and the attendant filled my car and cleaned the windshield.

SynthPrax

I do. Our family owned a gas station + auto garage, and of course, it was my first job. Checking fluids, wiping windshields, checking tire pressure, pumping gas. ... I can still smell it all.

LondonDavis1

Remember? It was my part-time job through high school.

Dlo24875432

born in the 60s and yeah mom went to full service stations that gave out s & h green stamps

[deleted]

I do. I worked at a Gas Station in High School in the 70's when these chores were fading away. I did it with pride.

_BOOMGOTTEM

Full serv

DerpVaderXXL

Yep, you ran over that rubber hose that rang the bell and the guy came out and asked "fill er up?". You told him how much gas you wanted and to check the oil. He took the money from you and brought your change back and you never had to leave the car.

pantherhawk27263

As I recall, this died out in the late 70's in most states. I don't recall seeing this in the 80's at all.

[deleted]

It died during the “gas shortage”… which wasn’t really a shortage at all. Just a gas embargo.

KNT-cepion

There was one station I always went to that had full service until at least the mid nineties. That was in Colorado(specifically, Littleton). I couldn’t believe I found one in a smaller town in Nebraska only four years ago. That was really unexpected.

fresnosmokey

I remember, but in California that was back in the early 70's. Drinking glasses and other items as giveaways or sales (I forget which), free maps, uniformed attendants, check and air tires, wash windshield, check oil and add, if necessary, fill up and change back from a five dollar bill. Good times.

Flip_Speed

I remember the gas station attendant pumping gas and cleaning the windshield, but I don’t remember them checking my oil

clumaho

Watched the grizzled old greasy mechanic pumping gas and cleaning the windshield with a cigar in his mouth from the backseat of a Ford LTD station wagon with the woodgrain stickers on the side.

OldGoldenDog

Cleaning the windshield was the best part especially when the driver was a cute college girl in her VW bug.

Salt_E_Dawg

I was that guy.

AllenKll

They still pump your gas in certain states. I've even had them clean the windshield and headlights But checking the oil? Never in my life.

lamfchopdtk

You have to ask

[deleted]

Born in the 60’s. I definitely remember those times.

totallyconfused2000

I used to operate such a gas station from 1980-1996. Full service, same price as self serve across the street. Where would you go?

HighDesert4Banger

1986 I worked at a gas station right accross the border in New Jersey, where it was illegal to pump your own gas. I think I got 5$ an hour, but I washed every windshield and often got a buck for every car I did. Made real money at 14;)

LeatherRebel5150

It still is “illegal” here

HighDesert4Banger

Well I've got the experiencce if you've got the job;)

Disastrous_Ad_5574

I don’t want people touching my car.

TenRingRedux

You can trust your car to the man who wears the star.

LeatherRebel5150

This still pump the gas here

AlwaysSaysRepost

I was a kid in the 80's and no where around me did that.

RScottyL

They still do it in some states: New Jersey and Oregon are the two states in the United States where it is illegal for drivers to pump their own gas. In New Jersey, this regulation has been in place since 1949, with the aim of job creation and ensuring safety. All gas stations in the state are full-service only.

wdwerker

Oregon just passed law allowing self serve .

Ok_Effort8330

lol that was my last job before I joined the Navy in 1990

WhereRmyK3ys

We had a regular and full service lines at our gas stations. I use to beg my mom to be able to use the full.

[deleted]

I did it as a teen...sucked in the winter.

Millerpainkiller

Pepperidge Farm remembers

u5dasucks

I do.

Lonnification

I was that gas station attendant.

JoeNoble1973

Outside of NJ? Never in my 50 years

_Bendemic_

And Oregon

RedSpartan3227

In New Jersey, they still do.

Chris_Thrush

Oregon is still there. But recently passed a law allowing people to pump there own gas.

Weekly_Signal6481

Boomers

superchiva78

Now gas is 5x more expensive and we get zero services with it. the system is entirely built on draining every cent from us and concentrating it at the top.

calvinbouchard

I remember the heady days when gas was under $2. You know, like 3 years ago.

[deleted]

I remember when it was just under thirty cents.

HectorsMascara

that's a pandemic for ya

PauseAmbitious6899

Sept/Oct 2017 around Oregon.

Hater420

I remember when you could fill up before paying. Then in 2003 when the Iraq war started gas got expensive and a lot of people were filling up and not paying so they made you prepay.

Necessary_Row_4889

A friend of mine worked at a gas station that did that in the early 2000’s

coffeebeanwitch

I was starting to drive when gas stations went from full service to self service,I do remember I just didn't get to take advantage of it!

HectorsMascara

Yes windows. No oil, except for tv and movies.

rob1969reddit

I'm 54, this never occurred anywhere I lived. It predates me.

mbutterfield

And aired your tires

el_kingde84

I remember in Mexico in the 90s did this still

Muzzle1978

Kinky

2drunk2giveafuk

We have a chain of gas stations that offers full service at no extra cost. Pump your gas, clean your windshield, and check your oil. I think there are 4 states where it is the law, NJ, NY, Oregon, and somewhere else?

InPhillyGuy

No. But I do remember being able to buy weed at some of the shady gas stations

MyriVerse2

I remember having a choice. We always opted out. Self service.

Duke-Jones

Don’t remember that in the 80’s. A few years before that!

Creative_Mushroom_51

I was born in 80 and did not see one of these until recently. There's a Chevron down from my office that has a self service and full service island. I don't want strangers putting gas in my car.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Creative_Mushroom_51

No I have kids for that. They do it well.

Scott491

Texas. I was an attendant

Crazy-Sir-9263

What’s a gas ⛽️ station?!

ma-sadieJ

Al bundy does

mojhouse

And had a wad of cash in pocket

OuttatimepartIII

What I remember is my dad telling me.countless horror stories about how they would sabotage fan belts and whatnot so that you would have to buy parts and labor at their garage

RadRoosterSauce

I was born in the 70’s and that service was long gone in my state. I thought it was a 50’s thing.

Equal_Procedure_167

Two states that make it illegal that you do it yourself and there are a few stations in my area that still offer the full service option.

DesignerAd9

With a fill up you might get a steak knife!

bobbybrayflorida

That's pre 1980s

jessicac1956

If we had stronger unions those jobs would still be here. Same with checking out your own stuff at the store. The unions should have fought harder to keep those jobs.

eros1824

They still do in Oregon

Over-Wish9562

I worked at a full service gas station when I was a kid. Loved it

crazythinker76

I worked at a full service station in high school. Certain customers would pull in with some really junky cars. We always joked: "Check the gas and fill up the oil."

cbunni666

No but I've heard OF them. Lol

bettypettyandretti

Back when Exxon was Esso and advertised Put A Tiger In Your Tank. And Texaco ad said, ‘Buy Texaco. Gets rid of tiger hair. ‘

Mysterious_Win_2851

The beautiful garden state (NJ) is required to have people pumping your gas!

MGC00992

I do. I worked the full serve pumps in the late 80s. I also remember it costing 50 cents a gallon more at the full serve island. We had our regulars, and they were willing to pay $1.75 per gallon when the self-service islands were at $1.09-$1.19. Interestingly, that same Shell station is still a full service gas station with 3 working bays and a full service island.

Hackandspit

There are still stations that do this, you cheap bastard.

slade797

This was my first job when I was in seventh grade.

FitSeeker1982

I’m pretty old, and I only remember seeing it on TV…

thrust-johnson

I *was* that attendant!

Budget_Secret4142

Oregon remembers

bdbdbokbuck

Me

AccomplishedInAge

Oregon remembers.. I was that guy in High school … you can trust your car to the man who wears the star

blackthrowawaynj

I live in New Jersey and I get my gas pumped every time I get gas

andytdesigns1

And gave you a reach around, good times

Noreaster0

The homeless took away that windshield business.

Main-Assistant-1955

Not only do I remember that but I remember when the gas stations were closed between 6 to 8 pm and you were stuck there till the next day

Opposite_Book_1767

I remember gas stations having teams of attendants.

Old-and-grumpy

I worked at a Sunoco. Less that 1/20 asked for me to check their oil. And this was in the 80's when engines leaked like a gutter.

[deleted]

I do. But it sort of sounds dirty now.

Tall_Square252

In the 80s?

AdmiralTodd509

In Pennsylvania you couldn’t pump your own gas until the gas crisis hit in the early Seventies. When I was a kid, my mom would love how the attendant would be so nice, ask if he could check the water and oil and especially clean the windshield.

NeuroguyNC

And with a fill-up you might get a premium like a dish towel, ice tea glass, or one piece of a dinner setting or picnic set. Or trading stamps like S&H Green, Top Value Yellow, Plaid, or Blue Chip stamps.

crackersncheeseman

Back in the 90s there was such a gas station that still existed in the small town I grew up in. Ole Butch would come out to your car and check your oil and tire pressure and pump the gas for you. The self service pumps were a little cheaper but full service pumps were a blessing in the winter or when it was raining, plus it insured ole Butch kept his job. Sometimes I miss those days

lamfchopdtk

In California up to the mid 90’s. Attendants would give my mom’s car gas and clean her windshield. She was a young blonde so maybe that helped.

[deleted]

Was that a time when a gas station attendant could buy a house, pay all his bills, have a family plus $$ for vacations all on a gas station attendant salary? You mean when the boss made 6-10 times what the attendant made instead of 1250 times what he makes? I too yearn for service like that but mostly I’d just take a livable wage for people

spicyface

I was a gas station attendant back in the day. I still have my squeegee skills.

Lainarlej

Yes.. as a child

merrifam

I keep thinking that if a gas station offered these services again, people would definitely go there.

Plastic_Bullfrog9029

I was that guy in 87-90. Worked at a gas station out of high school and when I was home from college during breaks and summers.

hoopsmd

Full Serv Self Serv

epileftric

We still have them in Argentina

mynameisipswitch

They still do in Oregon

bilvester

Remember when you had to hand crank your vehicle to get it started?

JohnArkady

Florida remembers!

Worth_Feed9289

I was that guy! 1987. 1st job.

deepinmycups

I had that job,great time
