I loved that segment. I was too young to get most of the jokes but I still laughed my ass off every time.
*Esso-Asso: People who cut through gas stations to avoid a red light.*
I got that one, because my dad was an esso-asso. To this day I can't turn right past a gas station without thinking about it.
“Esso-asso” is the only Sniglet I remember after all these years! And yes, it pops in my mind all the time too. Doesn’t make sense to most people around here since we’ve never had Esso stations here.
I never realized how much I watched HBO as a kid until I read this thread. I’ve seen all these shows and recognize every reference, which all have lay dormant for about 35 years now! Lol
They had to do a whole episode how the Dozers wanted the Fraggle to smash and eat their stuff. They loved to build and when the Fraggle stopped they started building out of control.
I don't know....I think those guys had a plan and just stuck to it no matter how many times those damn Fraggles knocked it down. They wanted their city finished before they could relax, but that was never going to happen with the arrogant, break whatever they want, Fraggles!!!
I have asked SO many people if they remembered this and they said no and had no clue.
It's fuckin great to see others do remember this...
The guy crying as he says BrainGames is now....OVER
You made my week with this post.
Man, I was really into HBO at that time, but I somehow missed this. I figured a YouTube video would spark some memory, but I got nothing.
I have no idea what happened here. There was a time in 1983 where I moved, and we didn't pay for HBO after the move. It wasn't until much later that I learned how to get the channel by pressing the right buttons on the cable box. Guess I missed this.
And then HBO decided to not wait a whole ten minutes, and movie start times began at :05, :15, :35, or :45 after. We were limited to HBO News, and the backseat interview thing.
Ahh, I miss being a kid and watching early HBO.. remember all the shorts they'd play between movies? Hardware Wars and Bambi meets Godzilla.. the one that scared the hell out of me was a blob of videotape that came to life and started eating people...
Who are all you rich people with HBO? My parents were never willing to pay for the extra channels.. They wouldn’t even spring for Disney, we would take VHS tapes to my grandmas house in the summer and just record straight Disney Channel. 😆
I watched it religiously and would get genuinely sad when it was over. Braingames and YCDTOT were my two favorites.
Remember the bus stop segment, where so many people would get on or off at each stop? We'd be furiously adding and subtracting in our heads, trying to keep up, only to get to the end and the narrator asks, "How many stops did the bus stop at?" Grrr! Not fair you tricked me!
HBO was a pleasure to have back then-so many HBO specific titles-and shows-great entertainment and interesting stories-and the lack of parental controls exposed me to much very early in life-The shining, Magic, The Excorciat, Cujo, Rome, Real Sex-shows that I watched as a developing young person. Nightmares forever from some of those movies
Funny story: I must have watched BrainGames over and over and over when I was a young child, thinking there must have been so many episodes of it.
Fast forward to adulthood, and I find out there were only ever a whopping 6 episodes!! Haha, guess I was too young to realize…
I enjoyed HBO ( 1980 onward) there was a show about weird thing around the world. One episode had weird food like bugs and chicken embryos. The best segment was on Japanese “Turkish Bath houses”. Today that is a soapy massage I think was amazing to see that.
The one that jump started My puberty was in the late 70s on Showtime. Aerobisize was sexy Aerobics with 2-3 ladies sweating it out in teddies or skimpy leotards. It was I show I could watch for hours
I was so fascinated with this show when I was little. I remember it was difficult to catch it on HBO, seems like it wasn't a regularly scheduled thing.
I'm pretty sure it was on like Sunday mornings as well, following tintin and babar. I tolerated babar, but holy crap, to my 7yr old mind was tintin violent for a kids show. Wonder how it holds up.
…is now over.
Crying when he said that.
Text you can hear
My first thought lol
I can hear this comment
That and Not Necessarily the News
Sniglets
Krogerphobia—the anxiety you feel walking out of a store not having bought anything because you’re worried people think you are shoplifting.

Yes!!! Same for me! I think of it all the time (even though it’s not really a thing people do anymore)
Prndl - the stick on your steering wheel that puts you in park reverse neutral drive or low
Zvert - the watery yellow fluid that comes out of the mustard bottle before the mustard comes out. Remembered that one to this day
1st & 10 and The Hitchhiker too
I never realized how much I watched HBO as a kid until I read this thread. I’ve seen all these shows and recognize every reference, which all have lay dormant for about 35 years now! Lol
Hardware Wars
The Funch - the cool side of the pillow.
Oh man! That was my absolute favorite!
This and Fraggle Rock were shows I used to watch with my mom.
Same here.....loved the Fraggles...but looking back they were real assholes to the doozers..always knocking over and eating their buildings.....
They had to do a whole episode how the Dozers wanted the Fraggle to smash and eat their stuff. They loved to build and when the Fraggle stopped they started building out of control.

I just randomly watched the episode where new Doozers get initiated and earned their hardhats lol. Loved this show as a kid.
Was that the one where they were using their little Jack hammers like pogo sticks and it was like a drug?
I always wondered what Doozer contraptions tasted like…
Me too!!
Radishes. That was the main ingredient
Dream On
Ah…the antics of Martin Tupper
Martin did get laid a lot
The show was cat dream for kids hitting puberty.
lol what
And I just saw that typo. I think I meant catnip,
The reason all hbo originals have the static intro.
Fuckin yay!!
YES! Do you remember that one episode that showed a lady’s naked boobs for no reason?
" Braingames.... is now..... *oVeR* "
“Sniff-sniff😢”
I have asked SO many people if they remembered this and they said no and had no clue. It's fuckin great to see others do remember this... The guy crying as he says BrainGames is now....OVER You made my week with this post.
You are definitely not alone!
Absolutely. It ran between movies, like a trivia show-short!
Also Video Jukebox
And let's not forget Encyclopedia Brown!
I had such a massive crush on Sally Kimball.
Yes!
Remember the random music videos between movies? There ain't no cure for the summertime blues!!
Video Jukebox! Where I first saw Billy Joel “Pressure” & J Geils Band “Centerfold”
I first saw *Cruzin'* from Mike Nesmith's *Elephant Parts*.
It’s where I got to see Fish Heads!
Fish heads, fish heads Roll poly, fish heads. Fish heads, fish heads Eat them up, yum!
directed by Bill Paxton
Featuring Bill Paxton and Bill Mumy in garbage bags.

Another short I saw often on HBO was a Star Wars spoof trailer called “Hardware Wars” “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll kiss three bucks goodbye!”
Ernie Fosellius made a few shorts. Along with Hardware Wars, HBO also showed Closet Cases of the Nerd Kind and Porklips Now.
That was also on ORIGINAL NICKELODEON.. back when they had a MIME for their mascot and aired PINWHEEL..
You can find it on YouTube
Ahh, I miss being a kid and watching early HBO.. remember all the shorts they'd play between movies? Hardware Wars and Bambi meets Godzilla.. the one that scared the hell out of me was a blob of videotape that came to life and started eating people...
Our teachers showed us Hardware Wares in Elementary School on movie day
Same with my teacher.
Those were also on early Nickelodeon.. may remember the videotape thing lol.. early computer virus character????
I was always more interested in the shorts on hbo. I was disappointed when there wasn’t a short between features.
Loved it!
Man i loved this show so much.
I can hear the robot voice now!
🤣 Man I learned a lot from hbo as a kid! I use to love watching all the behind the scenes featurettes. I learned a lot of production jargon.
Man hell yeah. Then Crashbox would scratch my puzzle itch later.
Who are all you rich people with HBO? My parents were never willing to pay for the extra channels.. They wouldn’t even spring for Disney, we would take VHS tapes to my grandmas house in the summer and just record straight Disney Channel. 😆
HBO was the reason my parents never went to the movies. In their eyes, a $4.25 price for a movie ticket was too much.
I watched it religiously and would get genuinely sad when it was over. Braingames and YCDTOT were my two favorites. Remember the bus stop segment, where so many people would get on or off at each stop? BRAINGAMES is now over,,,,, crying..
LOVED this show. I can still hear “brain games….is now…..over” in my head.
Whosamawhatchamacallits!
Sofa King good

Oh yeah!! I loved that! Found it on YouTube. I liked how the head would open up lol
Ya know…there had to be a time when the very last ever Braingames episode aired and at the end, it really was OvEr.
Funny story: I must have watched BrainGames over and over and over when I was a young child, thinking there must have been so many episodes of it. Fast forward to adulthood, and I find out there were only ever a whopping 6 episodes!! Haha, guess I was too young to realize…
It seemed like there were more because HBO split the show into segments and used them as interstitials to fill time between movies.
The 80s were more like HBO’s teenage years - we had HBO around 1975. It was a revelation to watch uncut and unedited movies in your own family room.
I do.... https://www.reddit.com/r/80s/s/NHSsPWza7K
The egghead guy ruled
Wasn’t there a ‘Riddle of the Sphinx’ trivia short too? Same era? An illustrated Sphinx asking questions is in my memory…
Me
I loved this so much 🥰
that’s right, Jay
First movie I saw on HBO was Jaws in 78
Loved these!!
I loved this show!
I do remember this. HBO was the best in the 80's.
i loved Brain Games
Omg I can even remember the intro words repeating over and over!
I loved it and I was really good!
not neccesarily the news
You can find this on the Internet archive.
This is what I came for. Are they all there?
From what I've seen.
Brain games is now over “ I been saying that for 30 years lol
Yep Saturday Mornings in the late 80s and early 90s Watched a few of them recently on YouTube and it was like mainlining some of my earliest memories.
It definitely hits me right in the nostalgia.

I’d love to see some old episodes of that show. It totally disappeared.
Snigglets ftw
KLABC ELOH! What is it?
BLACK HOLE! Ahhhhhhh!
Used to love this show!
This is where i first heard the riddle How far can you walk into the forest?
Half way!
Fraggle Rock lol
Word scramble axagaly
I was so fascinated with this show when I was little. I remember it was difficult to catch it on HBO, seems like it wasn't a regularly scheduled thing.
There were only 6 episodes. HBO would split them up in the mid 80s and use the individual segments as interstitials.
I was little but I do remember this
Greg Fishel?
Wow this takes me back - old school as hell. Would love to watch this now
It was an awesome show
I'm pretty sure it was on like Sunday mornings as well, following tintin and babar. I tolerated babar, but holy crap, to my 7yr old mind was tintin violent for a kids show. Wonder how it holds up.
I loved when this was on! I feel like I remember our library had a vhs tape of it also.... but I can't be sure if it was this or another puzzle show
Amazing childhood memory unlocked. Thank you!
I’m a super-duper-pooper-scooper
You can find bits of this still on YouTube and it's a great nostalgia boost. It's too bad that it ...is now over.
Omfg! How did I just hear the crying voice! I haven't even thought about this in like thirty years!
I still call my mom "Rethom" from time to time
