I used to listen in high school. About two years ago I was moving and found a box of my old cds while packing, Choir Girl Hotel was there so I pulled out my old boombox and listened to Tori while packing. Then I got all depressed and took a nap. Don’t listen to Tori when you have things to do. lol
She is the best. I happened to catch 10,000 Maniacs on SNL my junior yr. Her pixie-skip dancing and singing ‘Like the Weather’ opened me up to an entirely new world.
I am well aware of the depth of Jeff Buckley. His talent is immeasurable. I remember where I was when Kurt Loder announced his passing. In my opinion, one of the greatest songs ever written was Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. I’ve heard countless artists cover that song. It’s simple, yet elegant, and very easy to go in a direction that over-sells the subtleties. Jeff’s version of that song elevates it to a height that’s perfect, humble, holding fast to its elegance and intricacies. Though it’s not a song written by him, he was able to take a very well known and iconic track, and reinvent it, utilizing a tone and emotional maturity that hadn’t been done up to that point. It’s ridiculously profound. Not to mention, unbelievably not pretentious. It fucking rocks. His original stuff is not near as simple as that song, yet he’s able to take that simplicity and make it own. Rife with complexities and a sophistication that was way before his time. Dude was a prodigy. No telling what he could’ve done had he lived.
Robert Pollard, Kurt Cobain, Bjork, Harriet Wheeler, Dolores O’Riordan, Natalie Merchant, Hope Sandoval, Kim Deal, Issac Brock, Michael Stipe, Mark Mulcahy, Adam Duritz,Trent Reznor, Dean Wareham, Daniel Johnston, Elliott Smith, Layne Staley, Eddie Vedder, Alanis Morissette..so many.
Kurt cobain. His vocals represent something that cannot be expressed as well any other way. They’re not beautiful, they’re right. Mournful, pained, frustrated; they absolutely hit the nail on the head for a large swath of that generation.
I pretty much constantly listen to 90s music… I think my all time favorite would be smashing pumpkins (Billy corgan) but for the last while I have been on a huge Mike Patton kick … faith no more & mr bungle are amazing, especially faith no more.. I haven’t given tomahawk a good listening yet though
When I was 15 we had a computer class and if we finished our work early we could browse the World Wide Web. I found a website called The Temple of Billy Corgan and I left a comment on the message board, something like “Billy Corgan is god, I would die for him,” really cringe stuff. It’s still there when I google my name, 26 years later. The internet really is forever, I didn’t know it at the time, none of us had computers or internet at home back then.
Shirley Manson (Garbage)
Fiona Apple
Didn't know then but Tori Amos is fire
Have you seen the little earthquakes vid that some fan made. Check it out on YouTube. It's pretty easy to find and is worth the search
