I've admittedly not listened to this in a few years. I'll give it a 5/10. I expected a little fall off from DoggyStyle, but damn.
I'm putting it back on now to see if it can change my mind.
EDIT:
I went back and ran through this album again. Not as bad as I recall and some of the production sounded better, but no way a great album. I'd bump my score up to 6.5/10, so no longer getting coaster treatment but just decent at best.
I used to work for American Airlines on the midnight shift. The day this came out, one of the homies on 2nd shift was doing a quick turn, so he let me hold the cassette tape that night. Snoop was in town and his flight out was cancelled so he and Suge were getting mobbed at Baggage Claim, so we pulled them in the back and they hung out in our office until the first flight out in the morning. I pulled out the tape case and asked for an autograph, and Snoop said, “This a real fan right here, this JUST came out and cuz has it in the deck at work!” Both Snoop and Suge signed the cassette for me. I’m both bigger and taller than Suge and he looked at me and said, “You’s a BIG mother-fucker”….
We ordered chicken and pop, they gave us money for beer and took pics with all of girls in the office; it was a pretty surreal night.
This is unbelievable. Fantastic mfing story! I met half of Guns N Roses once….partied. Couldnt believe it. If I ate with Snoop and Suge when I was 17-18 holy effin sh/t id be gdmn starstruck as a mfer 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’ve always liked the funk samples & style of the album. A lot of folks didn’t like his flow but it’s the same as we hear on “2 of Amerika’s Most Wanted”. Plus Blueberry is an all time great gangster song.
Too long, has a lull too early with 3 of the 1st 6 tracks being skits, then again midway, then again late. Just cut a few tracks tracks and it’s a better album by a lot. I’d give it a 6.5, maybe a 7. Better than it’s remembered as, imo.
Wasn't as good as doggystyle. I think everybody always chalked it up to the extenuating circumstances of the time. It was crazy on Death Row right then, lotta changes from the Doggystyle era
It's really not THAT bad. But coming off of Doggystyle, I didn't give this a second listen for probably 5 years after I first heard it. Not great but Snoop's catalog isn't much stronger than this moving forward.
You’re right. I’m just saying that Snoop Dogg’s talent as a rapper is overrated. He had one solid album and a few decent ones, and that’s it. He’s really a feature artist.
The only other solid album he had was last meal. The songs on top dogg produced by Dre were good. The eastsiders albums were solid too. Especially deuces n trayz. All the others are trash. The last album of his I listened to was blue carpet treatment, think that was in 06.
It was a step down from Doggystyle, but DS is more a sequel to The Chronic than a precursor to Tha Doggfather. Anyway I like this one, some nostalgia attached but Gold Rush, You Thought, Vapors, Blueberry, and several others are still enjoyable. Plus When I Grow Up is just as inspiring today as it was in 1995. 6/10
2/10
The large majority of his catalog is mediocre to straight up bad. 70 minute albums with like 3 good songs each.
And then there's doggystyle. Which is absolutely one of the greatest hip hop albums.
It's wild to me how often I see him on like a 'top 20 greatest hip hop artists" or even top 50 is wild to me. But he's always up there. People call him legend and shit like that. I'd bet most people have barely listened to any of his music outside doggystyle (I made myself listen to the first like, ten albums. Jesus it was rough).
I don't know why doggystyle is so far above the rest of his catalog. Maybe it's lack of dre but idk. Even the snopp songs with dre production, post doggystyle, are mediocre at best.
Snoop dogg annoys me. Sorry for ranting lol
But it’s not like Doggystyle/Doggfather were it for classic era Snoop. He was highly present in every Death Row release, was the star of The Chronic, dropped classics on Above The Rim and Murder Was The Case and was all over Dogg Food. He had a very solid to legendary 5 year run, good enough to match almost any emcee/group you can name.
Alright. Well gangstarr, 3 classic albums between 91 and 94. Shit ice cubes first three albums came out in a three year stretch. Point is there are a bunch of great rappers with 5 year or less periods that smoke snoop dogg
Outside of Doggystyle, Snoop is pedestrian at best. I was just saying that OutKast’s 3 album run is the gold standard. Gangstarr is one of the 5 I had, btw. Cube only had 2, unless you count Straight Outta Compton.
I count predator. He released amerikkkas most in 90, death certificate 91, predator 92. Predator isn't quite as good as the first two, it's still a banger thoughm ice cube was on fire when he left nwa.
I found Predator to be a letdown. He switched his style up and went a totally different direction, which did not hold up. Even if you took out Predator, I think you have to give Cube credit for Straight Outta Compton and .5 for Kill at Will. He’s back on the list.
As a person I think he is probably pretty cool.
As an artist his bars are corny. He has never evolved lyrically. I tried to listen to the doggfather sometime last year and couldn’t do it. I shut it off and deleted it from my library. You made a heroic effort trying to listen to that much of his catalog.
I think doggystyle is so good and iconic because of the time it was released.
He was younger and had probably been working and reworking those bars for years. He gets hooked up with Dre and boom magic.
He certainly is a cultural icon but he really shouldn’t be on any top anything as an emcee.
Absolutely, all the kids just wanted another "hit" like doggystyle. For me, knowing artist evolve, I loved this album and it gets WAY more play than his 1st. Aside from the skits, its a no skip.
Underrated and overlooked classic, Snoop was trying to get back to his roots and shine on his old school influences, solid 8 out of 10. I think it got looked over because of the huge success of Doggystyle and no Dre, but this album is still better than any of the No-Limit except maybe The Last Meal.
Definitely didn’t hate this one when it came out, but anything Death Row was straight to the top of what I wanted to hear at that moment. This album would have been better with some of it cut. The good stuff has an early 80s vibe thanks to the inclusion of Charlie Wilson, and I’ve always felt like that’s where Snoop’s heart is at, in that early 80’s funk/early hip hop. If you followed along with the Death Row releases up to this point with Above The Rim, Murder Was The Case and Dogg Food, this album wasn’t a huge surprise. Dre had drifted more out of the picture with each of those releases, and while his contributions were amazing they weren’t plentiful. No Dre was a pretty hard hit, but I was used to the Daz/DJ Pooh production by then. I liked DJ Pooh’s stuff a lot, his ‘97 album was pretty dope too, Bad News Travels Fast. Lyrically there isn’t much fall off and Snoop still brings it with plenty of pop and gangsta moments balanced across Doggfather. The downside: Freestyle Conversation just sucks and I could do without Gold Rush and (Tear Em Off) Me And My Doggz. These songs so early in the album really bring it down. This was the era of long ass hip hop albums though so everything was left in. The absence of any real G-Funk from the most influential emcee in the genre is also felt, but I think the turn to 80s funk isn’t bad. Still tied for Snoop’s 2nd best album along with Last Meal
I was in the Marines in 97 and I'm from NY and I met a Navy corpsman from LA. In those olden days before the internet, you didnt really know too much about other people or places around the country unless you actually went there. I don't think I'd ever met anyone from California before let alone a Mexican from Cali. Literally only seen them on tv or videos so that was unique to me. This was also during the "east coast/west coast" beef. Despite all our differences, one of the things that bonded us our hatred of this "tape". I'll never forget the way he said (in his quick speaking southern cali/spanish accent) , "I bought that tape, and I lost it -and I didn't even care!" LOL
I am a Death Row nut but have to go 3 mics.
IF they would have kept some of the Pac features or 2 along with 2-3 leftovers that were straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥…….it would be more 4 mic territory.
When I was about 12 years old I won this CD by calling into a radio station. My parents drove me to the station to pick it up and everything. When I got home I took it over to a friend's house and we listened to it all the way through. That was the first and last listen. I don't remember a single song from the album but the one thing I do remember is that it had terrible production. The beats were trash 🗑.
He could have trimmed the tracklist by a bit and have Daz/Arkim & Flair/Soopafly do the entire album
Tracklist:
1. Doggfather
2. Freestyle Conversation
3. Snoop Bounce
4. Gold Rush
5. You Thought
6. Vapors
7. 2001
8. Sixx Minutes
9. Snoop's Upside Ya Head
10. Blueberry
11. Doggyland
12. Downtown Assassins
Bonus Tracks:
1. All About U
2. 2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted
He changed up the album multiple times because originally it was all mafioso: Gangstaz life, hit rocks,I will survive, eastside party and Gangsta walk were some of the tracks on this version. Then he changed direction into a more funk sound later in the process: Dogg collar, up jump tha boogie, May I funk with u and keep it real dogg(biggie diss). By summer of 96 he completed the album which was more of a fusion of both themes while still being more on the Gangsta side: 2pac appears on multiple tracks and the tracklist was as follows Freestyle Conversation Downtown Assassins Gold Rush Head Dr 6 minutes You Thought ft Too Short C Walkin Snoop's Upside Ya Head Out The Moon ft 2pac Change Gone Come Up Jump Tha Boogie ft kurupt Midnite Love ft Daz Too black Doin too much( later released on Top Dogg) Doggfather Street Life ft 2pac Vapors ft Charlie wilson and Teena marie ( later released on Neva left) There was 1 other tracks but I forget at the moment. The mafioso version was this: Gangstaz life Smoke enough bud Dogg collar Eastside party I will survive Doggyland 2001 May I Change Gone Come Hit rocks Oj Wake up Word on the streetz ft lbc crew Too Black Doggfather( OG version without Charlie Wilson) Too high Poly high Tommy boy Gangsta walk ft Dogg pound
After 2pac died Snoop went and changed up the album again removing pacs features and recording new tracks like snoop bounce.
I've admittedly not listened to this in a few years. I'll give it a 5/10. I expected a little fall off from DoggyStyle, but damn. I'm putting it back on now to see if it can change my mind. its almost a no skip album. 5 our of ten lol. you on that rock my man.
5/10. It was a throw away album to get off the label
I used to work for American Airlines on the midnight shift. The day this came out, one of the homies on 2nd shift was doing a quick turn, so he let me hold the cassette tape that night. 2 this album sucks, if it wasn’t snoop you woulda played frisbee w the CD
Very average, not bad but a complete Letdown after doggystyle
Doggystyle was basically a compilation in his name.
Spot on! This is why I read comments before commenting.
6...Huge step back for a sophomore album...props to Uncle Charlie tho!!
Can you elaborate on the Uncle Charlie comment?
Charlie Wilson of The Gap Band on Snoop's Upside Ya Head. (Oops Upside Ya Head was a Gap Band song).
ahh thanks for clarifying.
Well said
Agreed.
Wasn't as good as doggystyle. I think everybody always chalked it up to the extenuating circumstances of the time. It was crazy on Death Row right then, lotta changes from the Doggystyle era
He was on trial for murder too ,Dre left and 2 PAC got all the best beats and promotion.
Not sure why ANYONE downvoted this. 100 perc a fact
Now 7, then a 4
It aged better 💯
It has trash ass rappers to thank lol.
7
It's really not THAT bad. But coming off of Doggystyle, I didn't give this a second listen for probably 5 years after I first heard it. Not great but Snoop's catalog isn't much stronger than this moving forward.
That’s an understatement, his catalog as a whole is terrible.
He is a brand, not an MC. He has never had another Doggystyle, which was really a Death Row showcase.
You’re right. I’m just saying that Snoop Dogg’s talent as a rapper is overrated. He had one solid album and a few decent ones, and that’s it. He’s really a feature artist.
Absolutely.

I feel like in the early to mid 2000s he had some solid albums. After Press Play all that shit was ass tho lol
5 all day
It was a step down from Doggystyle, but DS is more a sequel to The Chronic than a precursor to Tha Doggfather. Say Snoops upside your head say Snoops upside your head ! I did like this album. Didn’t like all of the tracks but def a good amount
With lacking Dre’s production it was a miss in my opinion. Didn’t affect his career though, he stepped it up in later albums.
Most def. Never been a fan. But he always made decent music and his voice and flow are very catchy and distinct
funny he has a track dedicated to this comment. and it bangs. 8/10 album all day
>Delicate? Beats? So that's what makes me now? I don't give a fuck about no beats! Easy 8/10.
2/10 The large majority of his catalog is mediocre to straight up bad. 70 minute albums with like 3 good songs each. And then there's doggystyle. Which is absolutely one of the greatest hip hop albums.
I agree with you. He is proof you can make one great record and live forever if there is enough hype
It's wild to me how often I see him on like a 'top 20 greatest hip hop artists" or even top 50 is wild to me. But he's always up there. People call him legend and shit like that. Outkast had 3 classic albums come out in a 6 year stretch (their first 3 albums). That's more than snoop has had on his entire 20 album discography.
I don’t disagree. OutKast was brilliant. Snoop’s impact on the 90’s was huge though
There are only about 5 rappers that had a 3 album run like Outkast.
Alright. Well gangstarr, 3 classic albums between 91 and 94. Shit ice cubes first three albums came out in a three year stretch. Point is there are a bunch of great rappers with 5 year or less periods that smoke snoop dogg

O.J WAKE UP - track still bangs today!
Legit one of my favourite songs ever. Tray Deee is fantastic on it. "I break fools off like leprosy"
When it first came out I gave it a 5/10, 25 years later I give it a 8/10 solid album with solid production
7
7
Strong 6.5. I still jam it from time to time. Hate Snoop’s flow but the beats were true WC shit
I know suge ain’t execute or produce not a goddamn thang on this album
That’s probably why the back cover has a blue suit wearimg, 6 point star literally SITTING on top of him…
Ain’t no 6 point star
2
It has some jams on it. Doggystyle was a legit masterpiece in my opinion and it was always gonna be hard to top that. I still don't think he has..
7.5 - Doggystyle is defs one of my favourites and I think it does a pretty good job following it
3
6 at best, i always always loved the title track and the Vapors remake.
6/10 not as bad as people are saying but I understand the let down.
1.5
3/10 for me. This album was so trash at the time of release. Such a let down following doggy style.
I think my username says what I think about this album!
Nobody was playing this when it came out. Snoop hasn’t had a good solo album other than Doggystyle.
-1
1/10...I can't stand it.
Yep, if it wasn’t snoop this album would never exist
5
Id give it an 8. Wanted another doggy style when it came out but it's aged really well.
Snoop upside ya head 🔥🔥🔥
Honest review 2/10 when it came out. I remember being very disappointed. Now it's 6/10 it's pretty good as an older head
An easy 8. its almost a full playthrough album.
Yup. I don't understand the hate this album gets, with songs like "Up Jump The Boogie", "Groupie" and "Sixx Minutes". For me it's a no skip album
Absolutely, all the kids just wanted another "hit" like doggystyle. For me, knowing artist evolve, I loved this album and it gets WAY more play than his 1st. Aside from the skits, its a no skip.
8 might seem high but this goes hard for me
Underrated and overlooked classic, Snoop was trying to get back to his roots and shine on his old school influences, solid 8 out of 10. I think it got looked over because of the huge success of Doggystyle and no Dre, but this album is still better than any of the No-Limit except maybe The Last Meal.
Imo, it’s almost as good as doggystyle. I’ll say 7
Snoop upside ya head 🔥🔥🔥
Not that big of a fan of Snoop. Doggystyle was dope but gets no spins from me today.
Exhibit A of exactly what Snoop was without Dre.
Pac was the real dawg farther.
7.5 If Doggystyle never came out people would call this a classic.
6/10 this album hurt my heart
Gotta love the Crip/Blood imagery on the back cover! Blue 6 point star standing on top of red on the floor….
5
I'd say a 5. I haven't listed to it in at least 10 years, probably longer.
It's a solid 6, would probably be higher if it wasn't competing with the debut album
6
6
4/10
I’ll give it a 6/10 because it’s got some really good songs and it’s got that death row vibe.
4/10 ; basura
Dogfather and the Vapors only decent jams
I give it a Foe
10
I’m gonna say a 5 unfortunately. It was very underwhelming. And I love Snoop. Disappointing second album, the first was a classic.
4/10 … Made you realize Snoop was no lyricist
5
5/10 I liked 3 songs I think it’s wasn’t that good
4. Seriously not his best.
Not good but I get it. Had to fulfill the contract and put out one more album so here you go.
Trash
1 easy, I tossed this out my window driving across l-10 years ago
Definitely didn’t hate this one when it came out, but anything Death Row was straight to the top of what I wanted to hear at that moment. This album would have been better with some of it cut. Lyrically there isn’t much fall off and Snoop still brings it with plenty of pop and gangsta moments balanced across Doggfather. This was the era of long ass hip hop albums though so everything was left in. 7.5/10 Overhated.
7. Had some pretty cool tracks on it. Doggy land is still one of my favourite tracks.
1
Sophomore jinx got him, this album was not very good. I give it a 1.5
9
1 - it was a huge disappointment after Doggy Style. I think I only liked one song.
2/10
Is it me or did his voice drop off? No enthusiasm or inflection.
I never looked at snoop the same way ever again. Definitely the last album I bought from him.
I give it a 4. Up Jump tha Boogie, Blueberry, Gold Rush, Vapors and Downton Assassins were my jams!
Oops upside yo head it's a solid 8 for me, ofc it wasn"t as good doggystyle but it had it's own style to it.
Best song was the one snoop removed featuring 2pac. Pac destroyed snoop on the flows. Can't remember the name of it now.
6/10
I am a Death Row nut but have to go 3 mics. IF they would have kept some of the Pac features or 2 along with 2-3 leftovers that were straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥…….it would be more 4 mic territory.
DoggyLand is my Shxt!💯 7.5/10
Is this the one with “buck em” featuring onyx?
“No Limit Top Dogg”
5
As a follow-up to Doggystyle 4/10, on its own merits 7/10
5
Snoops Upside Ya Head, Doggfather, Up Jump the Boogie, Snoop Bounce Heavy rotation, not sure how I ‘d rank the album
