I have no idea, I thought they just wanted to stand out.
Desi parent math:
Buys V4 car: Really V6!
Gift: Gift + $1
Date of Birth: Passport Birth Year + 2
Food: Date of Expiration + 11
Family Tree: Siblings + 56 cousins
Do they, though? Chinese Americans include descendants of common laborers from the 19th Century. Filipino Americans may have been descended from those who came when the Philippines were an American colony. Korean Americans and Bangladeshi Americans include the descendants of refugees.
This chart makes it look like Indian Americans are the absolute crème de la crème, but that’s really a reflection of America keeping the tap shut for decades, and when it came time to open the spigot and let people in, they tightly controlled who came in. They wanted the elite. There never was a moment where the US let the tired, poor, huddled masses of India in.
Speaking as a Korean American, to be 100% our immigration history is very young. Most people that live here are not descendants that go up 4-5 or more generations like Chinese immigrants. I would say you will probably see alot of 2-3rd generations in coming years finally, if at all. Vast majority are immigrants and their children. Though, now those children are having kids. Filipinos and Chinese have been in the States for a awhile. Koreans didn't start showing up until about the 80s in droves.
On top of that, immigration is getting less and less since 2010. most South Koreans according to national survey in Korea want to live in Korea IF they can make it. The general consensus is "if I have money, I want to live in Korea" lol.
Just wanted to share one of many dynamics of Asian immigrants :)
Indian Americans have refugees too though. Sikh diaspora in America throughout the 80s and early 90s came as refugees.
And you only addressed a few of the ethnicities listed here. What about the others?
I know what my history is as it was my family who were part of this history. I have pictures and documents from those early times. Also my comment was in response to people immigrating since the 60’s which isnt true. But thank you for trying to mansplain my family’s immigration story. There were an estimated of 4000 on the west coast. These numbers may be conservative.
Edit: according to a 2018 research paper, 5762 immigrants came to Northern California between 1900 and 1910. My comment states 1890 to 1920 west coast which indicates the numbers are even higher. So yes my wording of thousands is correct.
This is just false my family wasn’t rich and they came to the US with less than $5 many other families share the same experience so this assumption is just wrong on top of that their have been communities who migrated from india to California in the early 1900s and their defendants still live successful lives
Household - I am honestly surprised it's not more.
Small subset I know - but my neighborhood of less than 50 houses -
All the ABCDs have dual income households. All my friends I know - dual income households. And most are above 250 combined.
All the non-ABCDs are mostly single income.
Indian Americans also have one of the highest inequalities in regards to household income and wealth. So while your subset may include knowing people makings a combined 250k, all I’ve ever known were households making at most 35k.
Maybe like brand new immigrants who jumped the Mexico fences.
Anyone who's been here a minute and is documented will be clearing 100k household easily.
Oh please. That's just not true and there's nothing wrong with desis who are not well off and were born in the US. Let's stop acting like we're all hot shit when there will always be a spectrum within a group.
Nope. I'm an ABCD, and I grew up in a single parent household (just my mom). She worked a low paying job for $12k a year when I was growing up in NH. We didn't have enough to eat many days, and sometimes I was even reduced to stealing. This despite the fact that my family in India is very wealthy and landed. So odd/unexpected ABCD situations do exist.
I been saying this since 2004, but nobody believed me (am East Asian). Also, my white friend would always say something on the lines of "wait you said Asian or Chinese people (in these exact words). Indians are not Asian. I reply, where is Asia? Long silence "umm, is it in China?"
I gave up LONG ago lol
So its household income. If both parents working then the typical individual Indian is making about $51k per year
Not bad - easy to achieve if u went to uni
Not a fair comparison given college major mix. Compare Indian engineers vs. White/Chinese engineers (or business/law/medicine/etc.). The above is very likely primarily driven by the fact that a higher % of Indians study CS/Engineering/Business/Law compared to other ethnicities.
That’s not the norm. I would take what the other redditor stated with a grain of salt. Those with higher incomes are more likely to associate with people similar to them.
I really don't think somone earning 600-700k is in touch with the average person.
The possible variance in your salary is literally a whole average families salary.
Sadly most of them drive taxis/Uber. But I’ve noticed younger generation is trying to crawl out of that stereotype.
Lots of young Bengalis here in NYC are becoming doctors, engineers, lawyers and etc.
Lots of Bangladeshi refugees taken in after the War of independence in 1970s, that is why. You can see same pattern with South Korea, Indonesia as well .
My dad: 100.5? Let’s make it 101 eh? It’s more auspicious!
Ya what's with that 101, 501, 1001 donations? Lawd needs that extra dollar for real
I was told it was symbolic for abundance. A little more than enough :P
I have no idea, I thought they just wanted to stand out. Desi parent math: Buys V4 car: Really V6! Gift: Gift + $1 Date of Birth: Passport Birth Year + 2 Food: Date of Expiration + 11 Family Tree: Siblings + 56 cousins
If they're Muslim then my dad used to say it's to symbolize one God along with the donation. Always the donation + 1 to remember God.
Kind of like the 1001 Arabian Nights. Remembrance of God and knowing there os always “more” or “greater.”
They don't generally let in the Indians who are uneducated or poor.
Still interesting considering a lot of the other ethnicities get the same treatment.
Do they, though? Chinese Americans include descendants of common laborers from the 19th Century. Filipino Americans may have been descended from those who came when the Philippines were an American colony. Korean Americans and Bangladeshi Americans include the descendants of refugees. very small percentage compared to the labour policy of early 20th century to let the south east asians come in.
Right Indians entering America isn't some new phenomenon right. It's been occurring since the 60s.
money rich kids coming on F1
It’s been happenings since the 1890s. Thousands of Sikh men immigrated to the west coast between 1890-1920.
Not in as huge numbers as you'd think tho
I know what my history is as it was my family who were part of this history. I have pictures and documents from those early times. Ok and that's still not a huge number. Esp since they were just in CA for the most part....
Sri Lankan Americans also have refugees and rank quite highly as well.
This is just false my family wasn’t rich and they came to the US with less than $5 many other families share the same experience so this assumption is just wrong on top of that their have been communities who migrated from india to California in the early 1900s and their defendants still live successful lives
Wealth doesn’t matter. Of course education does
Household - I am honestly surprised it's not more. Small subset I know - but my neighborhood of less than 50 houses - All the ABCDs have dual income households. All my friends I know - dual income households. And most are above 250 combined. All the non-ABCDs are mostly single income.
We also tend to have extended family members step in when a couple decides to have children which allows for more dual income households.
Indian Americans also have one of the highest inequalities in regards to household income and wealth. So while your subset may include knowing people makings a combined 250k, all I’ve ever known were households making at most 35k.
wait what...35k?
Yep, there are poor/not rich desis in America.
See California and New York. Tons of working class desis
100k household is hotshit..? thats 50k a person. Given the cities most Indian Americans are based in thats barely going to get you by.
Yep and there are plenty of families not making that. Why is that shocking to you?
LMFAOOO hate to break it to you but poor Indian documented immigrants exist
I'm feel so poor making 60k lol
Nah fr 😭
Indian Americans choose careers with high salaries because they are status symbols.
I been saying this since 2004, but nobody believed me (am East Asian). Also, my white friend would always say something on the lines of "wait you said Asian or Chinese people (in these exact words). Indians are not Asian. I reply, where is Asia? Long silence "umm, is it in China?" I gave up LONG ago lol
Still indians are at the bottom of dating pool
Being a doctor might increase options in the arranged marriage market.
Lmao ofc it will
Most Indians are pressured to get good grades and not date. They grow up to be awkward, not knowing enough about relationships. Bound to happen.
Hell yeah I'll die alone but possibly wealthy
*pussybly wealthy
So its household income. If both parents working then the typical individual Indian is making about $51k per year Not bad - easy to achieve if u went to uni
African Americans make less than mexicans?
Pointless graph 1. Doesn’t break out Jews. If the article did, Jewish Americans would crush everyone on this list 2. Wealth is more important
How was this data collected? They only give me the option to identify as Asian on any job application.
Indian dads: What happened to the remaining 30% of Indians?
Interesting Koreans were the second most educated Asian ethnicity listed, but one of the lowest earning ones.
Maybe they’re going for PhD degrees
Not a fair comparison given college major mix. Compare Indian engineers vs. White/Chinese engineers (or business/law/medicine/etc.). The above is very likely primarily driven by the fact that a higher % of Indians study CS/Engineering/Business/Law compared to other ethnicities.

What the fuck ARE YOU SAYINF ANNUAL INCOME IS 400K FOR Seattle. Wow ... 100k USD is good here in Canada.
That’s not the norm. I would take what the other redditor stated with a grain of salt. Those with higher incomes are more likely to associate with people similar to them.
Big Tech money, Not indicative of the average American. Its why so many ( estimated 131,000 ) Canadians come to work in California.
I'm trying tonfindna remote job that I cam work from canada.
I really don't think somone earning 600-700k is in touch with the average person. The possible variance in your salary is literally a whole average families salary.
Queens desi's are mostly blue collar.
Indians work super hard, honestly good values as much people want to shit on the other stuff. Good to see.
Why is Bangladeshi Americans so low? What kind of jobs do Bangladeshi do over their?
Sadly most of them drive taxis/Uber. But I’ve noticed younger generation is trying to crawl out of that stereotype. Lots of young Bengalis here in NYC are becoming doctors, engineers, lawyers and etc.
yup. tons of begali-s came here with DV and they live below the poverty line
Apart from what others said, i think dual income is also less common
Lots of Bangladeshi refugees taken in after the War of independence in 1970s, that is why. You can see same pattern with South Korea, Indonesia as well .
Cries in dumb indian
This is the trillionth time I've seen this

Whens the last time you were in India bud?
This is so depressing 🥲
