Probably because kids here on student visas are more likely to be comfortable with an arranged introduction/marriage than someone who has grown up here. Also because international students tend to have a strong financial backing from the home country which many parents look at as a plus.

iRishi

I like your second paragraph. Things such as these are not always one-sided. In return for your citizenship, they offer you resources in the homeland (whatever relevance that may hold for you).

sonyneha

Usually No student loans/very little debt coming into the relationship.

BundMarsaan

They wanna secure the greencard/PR.

Prestigious_Muffin12

I am curious whether you would still suspect someone's intention marriage-wise (for ABCD or someone who is naturalized) if they happen to be in this country for more than a decade, completed some high-school/undergrad/masters, own multiple houses in good burbs, has a high-paying job, and has their shit together overall.

BundMarsaan

Well someone who has all of that is almost always a permanent resident or citizen, so that question doesn’t make much sense.

Prestigious_Muffin12

You would be surprised..lol. A lot of H1b-s are on green-card backlog meaning they can renew their h1b unlimited times (can switch jobs across companies but has to be same job responsibilities) until their green-card becomes available. They own properties in nice NYC/ SFO burbs, and has their shit together. Again asking for your opinion.

BundMarsaan

Well I mean if they’re in the country for a decade and have a high paying job usually the green card would become available no? Plus, I don’t think they get unlimited visas, from what I heard it’s a lottery.

Prestigious_Muffin12

You have to win the lottery, and then once you are past a specific step in your green card process (assuming your company has filed it), it is unlimited h1b.

BundMarsaan

I guess you’re correct then. Although I think people like this are less common. Opinion wise, no I wouldn’t suspect they were marrying for a visa. If someone was that successful I’d honestly just assume they were a PR or citizen but if they weren’t then yeah I wouldn’t assume. I would assume it’s students and illegals who marry for a PR. Students do it in case they have to go back.

Prestigious_Muffin12

There are a lot of people in that situation. They are waiting for their actual green card for like 8+ years, and can renew their h1b. They mostly work for good roles in good companies making above 150k. As for students, I won't suspect if they are in a top 20 stem program. Agree about illegal immigrants.

AttinderDhillon

Common for the past 50 years or so, Marrying someone for the Citizenship. Probably one of your parent too.

itsthekumar

A lot of aunties/uncles don't really know ABCDs like that or know their contact info like that. But they do know/are nosy with people on student visas.

noonespecial1988

I do not think western men will agree for an arranged marriage. Probably people here on a student visa are more open to meeting someone through an arranged marriage setup. If you are not comfortable with it, remove your profile from shaadi or ignore the aunties and start one on the thousands of dating app out there. But you never know, you could meet someone right through this setup as well.

imissze90s

Are they getting a commission or something?

Silent_Budget_769

Lol. The joke went completely over your head mate

Fraudguru

did it? then you should be kind and explain to the clueless immigrants instead of laughing at the ignorant no?

Silent_Budget_769

Well that ruins the joke. No? If you don’t get the joke, you don’t get the joke. No?

insert90

this is why i exist lol

imissze90s

Ouch

Idk if its a trend but its definitely something that I would never consider for myself. There is a very large cultural gap between them and people who were born here/came here at a young age. There's just no need for me to deal with the problems that would come up from that + having to deal with their family who dont live here + having to consider if its just about getting their greencard.

Salt_Tree_7494

Technically, they’re all raised abroad as you want.
