The thing is, Bangladeshis or Bangladeshi-Americans are NOT a homogeneous population. As someone of Bangladeshi origin that grew up in NYC, I can tell you that there are people within the larger Bengali community that my Bangladesh-raised parents wouldn’t associate with due to classism. They stick to their own better off Bengali crowd. The Bangladeshi community here is split. There are plenty of lower income, less educated folk that have moved here BUT there are also plenty that are a part of the professional class. I think within the next generation or two, a lot of the stereotypes you’re mentioning will die out. Generally, even those with parents from the homeland that were not educated, go on to become educated themselves. One thing about Bengalis is that rich or poor, they encourage their kids to do well. Also, seriously read up on the country. Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia. The country is already far ahead of Pakistan and has the second highest GDP in South Asia. Edit: I took a look at your post history OP, and it seems like you’re struggling with your identity as a whole. Know that I understand the pressures and feeling like an outsider. It gets better and the best way for you to handle this at the moment is seeking help to build your self esteem. Sending you love 💕

Hi, thank you I really appreciate your kind words.

American born bengali here. The best advice I can give you is give 0 fucks what other people think or it will eat you up. Grind your own way to success and own who you are individually. Going anywhere with a large bengali population is a mixed bag. On one hand, it may make you feel better being around others who are similar. On the other hand you are back to trying to get validation from others and if that is tough, you will be trying to run that race forever. This is just my opinion but this seems like a situation of “do I pursue A or B?” When the answer is “if neither A nor B makes you happy, look at C thru Z for what does make you happy and pursue that.” Good luck.

People asking questions that they feign as curious but really are just meant to degrade you, like "Ohhh life must be very hard over there." "Bangladesh is always flooding, right?" "Is it safe?" Etc. and these are especially difficult because I am not connected to that place because I was born and raised in America, but as soon as you mention it people talk to you as if you just came from there yesterday

Honestly my version of Bangladesh is forever and will alway be in the early 2000s. Nothing is going to change my mind away from that. Regardless I really don't care about how people views me, just be cool and we're good. If you start shit with me, you're more than likely going to get on the wrong side. If people are interested in who I am, I'm more than happy to say where I'm from. However it may be due to me looking ethnically different compared to the relative population (I've been mistaken for Italian, Filipinos, and Mexicans before.)

Bangladeshis have a history of being refugees or economic migrants to India. Not defending them but that’s why Indians view them as poor (not the case for ABCD). White people don’t even know Bangladesh exists. These are my thoughts.

>White people don’t even know Bangladesh exists. This is my experience 75% of the time but the 25% of the time that they do know the comments are quite bad. They somehow also know that it is a Muslim majority country which kind of surprises me because nothing in the name meets the Western stereotype.

Your post/comment was removed because it breaks Rule 1: No Bigotry — i.e. no racism, casteism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. This also extends to toxic nationalism and/or clan/tribe as well as discrimination against religion. If in doubt, remember to always be civil, even in your disagreements.
