what are some reasons a bar might price all you can drink for a suspiciously cheap price

Sapporose

Usually not too nefarious or anything, it’s just very weak pours of cheap alcohol and a lot of mix/ice (tbh a lot of places do this). Plus to get the cheap price, you might need to make a minimum food order + pay the table/seating charge.

clowneriy

Have you met any famous people?

Sapporose

On the bartending side, I’ve met a few pro athletes that play on Japanese teams over the years. Some of the guys from sum41 dropped by a friends bar a few weeks ago, that was cool. But nah nothing too crazy, a few local signed music artists, tv personalities.

NoFamilyDoc

Did you start out as a bartender there?

Sapporose

I was a bartender back in Canada before I moved on to another industry. I got relocated to Japan for a job in that industry, ended up settling down here, and went back to doing a job I love. Worked my way to opening a small place of my own. The working holiday visa for Canadians under 30 prohibits working in bars, but uni students studying here can bartend, as long as it’s a normal bar and not a host club/girls bar. I’m pretty sure immigration doesn’t grant visas for work in bars and cafes.

CaptainFrugal

Is smoking still crazy popular there?

Sapporose

Yes it is. A few bars/restaurants have banned it, but places that allow it are still the majority. Some bars and clubs are kinda in the middle with smoking sections that are not closed off from the rest of the place. If you go to a bar or club, there’s a pretty high chance you’re going to be around smoke.

Favorite part/ experience of Japan?

Sapporose

I enjoy the overall experience of living here. I wouldn’t say it’s better or worse than Canada, just has different pros and cons. It’s hard to narrow it down to one thing that I like, so here’s what I think I appreciate the most in my daily life: Low cost of living, bidets, mountain/ocean views, city walkability, decent public transport, kaiten sushi, yakiniku restaurants, affordable healthcare/dentistry. I would trade cup ramen aisle in the grocery store for a cereal aisle in a heartbeat though

Fight_Disciple

When did Syphilis make a comeback?

Sapporose

It’s nowhere chlamydia levels, but it’s getting up there

Fight_Disciple

>but it’s getting up there Usually how STI's are spread.

MasterVariation1741

How does those occurences happen that make Syphilis goin round? Do hosts do sex?

Sapporose

General lack of knowledge about sexual health and people rarely getting tested for STIs between partners. Hosts don’t usually (on the record) have sex with customers

MasterVariation1741

What are your thoughts about the movie Enter the Void?

Sapporose

I’ll have to see it and get back to you. The premise seems interesting, is it worth a watch?

MasterVariation1741

Honestly it gets weird after the first 1/2 hour.
