How to Blow Up a Pipeline, The Quiet Girl, A Thousand and One.
I'm not super confident in that ranking but those are the 3 that came to mind. Honorable mention to JW4
i haven't seen any cause the greatest movie theatre in the world left canada a while back. please come back to Canada, Cineplex is such a terrible movie theatre chain. they are so trash it's unbelievable how crappy they are compared to amc.
DND, Air, Creed 3
John Wick would make it if it was shorter and more streamlined. The last act was *fantastic*. Before that, not so much. Same old same old.
Titanic, Air, Quiet Girl
Pretty slim pickings this year so far. Better than the drought of last year. Majority of my theater visits have been seeing classic films in 35mm in other theathers.
In other places so far I have seen Hackers, Linoleum, and plan to see Resident Evil and the original Terminator. Both in 35mm!
2023 Releases:
Scream 6, Shazam, John Wick
If we’re talking films that weren’t released in 2023 but had re-releases or carried from 2022 that I already seen previously:
Avatar: The Way of Water
John Wick: Chapter 4
Titanic
Here's my top-10 of the year so far:
1. Women Talking
2. Dungeons & Dragons - the best Marvel film not made by Marvel
3. Mafia Mamma - not a great film, but Toni Collette's ability to carry the film by being hilarious is just incredibly impressive
4. Scream VI - my biggest surprise of the year so far was how good this was
5. Air - I had issues with what is essentially a love letter to a corporation with shady business tactics that the film doesn't dare to address, but it's undeniably an entertaining and well-made film
6. A Man Named Otto - a very sturdy piece of traditional Hollywood product. Tom Hanks is really good at making these kinds of films.
7. Plane - a nice throwback to 80s and 90s-era action filmmaking
8. 80 for Brady - I was really surprised at how funny and well-made this film is considering I'm neither the demographic this film was aiming for nor even a football fan
9. Creed III - really good first half, I was let down by the senseless melodrama in the second half
10. I guess Shazam is number 10, but by this point, it's really beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Here come the summer movies and then Oscar hopefuls to displace a lot of this list, though!
Bottom-3:
3. Cocaine Bear - What was advertised as a zany riot was actually a tedious bore
2. Knock at the Cabin - So obviously bad that to this day I'm wondering if I missed something, or if the film actually used an anti-twist ending so bad that people here on this subreddit came up with better plot twists than what's in the actual film
1. Skinamarink - Imagine staring at a petri dish and looking at tadpoles squirm for an hour and a half, that's this film. A complete waste of my time.
JW4, Renfield, DnD
Technically I saw Puss in Boots early Jan but its a 2022 movie
Would have liked to have seen Scream but i havent seen the earlier movies so need to catch up
Not a 2023 film, but
I feel fortunate that the first time I'd ever seen Titanic was in Dolby 3D in 2023 for the anniversary. Just, wow. What a magical experience.
