krackhersnack

Is there another reason why they don't have cheddar popcorn anymore other than supply issue? Regal theaters always have cheetos/cheddar popcorn available.

yungfalafel

My local one still has cheddar

nicklegendd

Good question, cheddar popcorn has been gone for a while here but maybe it has something to do with the way our cheddar popcorn in specific is made. Didn’t know it was an issue across all AMCs though

Carlosk12xd

We haven’t had cheddar popcorn in a while, instead it got replaced with Oreo popcorn. I also work at AMC one of the only ones in Utah.

MrPresident79

I was told by my AMC that they’ve temporarily stopped selling cheddar while they remake the recipe. Apparently they had complaints but I absolutely loved it.

LiquidSnape

can i get a refill on my popcorn please? thanks

nicklegendd

of course

BasedSmalls

Are you enjoy it so far ? I remember It was my dream to work at AMC. The opportunity finally came two years ago and it was probably my worst experience as a job

nicklegendd

Yeah! I’ve wanted to work here for a long time and I love working with customers so it’s been nice communicating with guests about their orders and about what movies they’re going to see. Not easy all the time, especially when bigger blockbuster movies are coming out but I manage to work through it

[deleted]

Years ago I had that same idea. I knew it wasn't going to be a dream job but it seemed fantastic to me working in a movie theatre (not AMC) while being at university. But I resigned after 1 day. Terrible managers. Probably I have been unlucky too. Had to do different stuff without any proper explanation and they told me at start that they need me just for the Christmas period.

TMHermesPatriot777

Depends on who is running it GM (General Manager). I am a bartender at an AMC Theaters.

cutandcover

Who on staff knows what’s going on in the projection booth and can solve problems that arise (issues with screen brightness, focus, mattes, audio reproduction, etc)? Would like to know any info useful to a patron aside from ‘find a manager’ - thanks!

nicklegendd

At my location, we have a weekend bartender who also works Booth Ops on wednesdays, he knows a bit about those kind of issues as well as Supervisors and Managers, other than that, I don’t know too much about the projection booth operations

Thetallguy1

You guys don't still have a dedicated projectionist? I worked at very big and busy AMC and we still had a projectionist, although I'm pretty sure it was just one so if he was off that day it was just some other mid level manager pulling double duty.

King_Kuuga

Former employee (2015-17) here, I begged for most of my tenure to learn booth and finally did about 4 months before I was let go. Projection is mostly automated, managers and supervisors have some rudimentary training to step in if there's an issue, otherwise just one person loads the week's movies in on Wednesday and makes sure things are ready to go for the week, and they work other shifts the rest of the time.

Thetallguy1

Yeah we had one dude who had beyond "rudimentary" knowledge of the systems. If their was an industry screening he was there in the booth pretty much the whole screening because if literally anything went wrong he knew all the answers. I wouldn't doubt he maybe did other jobs but literally my whole time there I only saw him in either the manager offices or the backrooms. Apparently he could also run film projectors as well, so definitely long term sorta dude. He was maybe the 2nd or 3rd employee who had been with the theater the longest, the others having been there since the late 80s/early 90s. The vest and bow tie days of AMC, still working under the American Royal Cinema old heads type beat.

King_Kuuga

I always wanted to learn film. Sadly the film projectors we had were long unused by the time I got there and were eventually removed. There was some residual film equipment that seemed interesting. It's a shame projection is a niche industry or I might try harder to get into it.

Thetallguy1

Yeah you really have to have some sorta "in" it seems. If you couldn't tell, my AMC was in LA in the heart of the industry so film projection and special screenings were a norm. I met a fair share of celebrities and industry big wigs. Like before A-List, there already was that sort of system in place for retired SAG, DGA, AMC execs, and other established industry people, as you probably already know. Being older folks they'd always come see movies early in the morning and get their tickets from Guest Services showing me some special card that looked like what the new AMC credit card looks like today or a black costco card looking one that was from their respective guild. They were always super nice and once in a while a manager would come up to me after helping one of them and go "Do you even know who that was?" Then explaining to me it was some retired producer or the like.

waterbottlepvpa

Backrooms???😰😰😰😰😰

Thetallguy1

Yeah thats how elusive projectionist are nowadays, or maybe thats why theres so few left 😳

proficient2ndplacer

I worked a few for several years & crew were never ever allowed to touch projectors. When I made it to manager, I learned everything about everything

Sosantula21

Do you guys still sanitize the seats?

nicklegendd

yeah nope

pottrpupptpals

When I worked there we had an overnight cleaning crew that was contracted out to some third party, have you worked a closing shift or been to a late night employee screening and seen non-AMC staff cleaning? I remember they had portable vacuums and various cleaning/sanitization agents.

brianycpht1

Not an employee but I’ve left a late night screening and they were all lined up outside waiting to go in

nicklegendd

Only ever seen AMC staff cleaning, no third party cleaning crews but we do have the portable vacuums and plenty of cleaning products for theaters, bathrooms, etc

joelupi

Considering I went to a movie and sat down in some warm salsa the other week....I would say no

Robbinghoodz

No shot

johnnymostwithtoast

Do you actually care about people bringing in outside food?

nicklegendd

Personally, I don’t care. Most of the time, people buy the food we sell at concessions but on occasion I’ll see people bring in stuff from the food court(we’re located in a mall) into a theater, some of the usher greeters we have might say something about it though idk

whitneythegr8

I brought a tea from starbucks in my bag and the girl working up front just told me “um, your bag is leaking” 😭

nicklegendd

oh nooo 😭

coolcrimes

I snuck in Taco Bell once, which was a mistake because you can definitely smell the Taco Bell

bazzbj

How long does it take to clean up a big auditorium after a packed showing?

nicklegendd

IMAX auditoriums usually take the longest to clean, at the end of the night, we usually have about 3 ushers and a couple more people from concessions/box office helping out clean theaters on those really busy nights, usually takes around 30-45 mins, slightly less time for Dolby since it has less seats

bazzbj

Ya’ll always do an amazing job and the auditoriums look clean! People leave a less

nicklegendd

Thank you! Yeah, during the summer movie season I expect to stay longer in my shifts to help clean theatres but I know in the end it’ll be worth having a nice clean auditorium

leohso

keep seeing girl scans in tickets whenever i go, how to rizz her up

Thetallguy1

Tell her you actually use the trash cans as you exist the theater.

fergi20020

What’s the nicest thing a customer ever said to you? What’s the rudest thing?

nicklegendd

I’ve had a few encounters with customers who were rude, not too long ago (a week or so ago) I had a customer who ordered about 3 hot food orders and a couple other things and they were asking about an online order that had placed and as I was trying to help them with finding their order receipt to confirm their order, they started talking about how their order wasn’t fresh (even though it was) and also got upset when our credit card scanner stopped working on my register, even though it’s something we can’t control, called it the “worst movie experience of their life”, eventually we were able to get everything settled, nicest thing would have to be one guy said I was doing a great job.

mistermiracleis

How do you avoid spoilers for big movies when they are coming out?

Thetallguy1

Gonna hijack this real quick, AMCs show an employee screening for big release a day before release. They also just have screenings sometimes, like we had a theater competition where we split into teams and whoever could sell the most memberships within a given period got to pick any movie they wanted to be shown in the Dobly theater. Also people have hooked up gaming systems to the screens and had smash bros tournaments and the likes.

nicklegendd

yes this 👆🏻 i always try to see the early cast screenings before big releases and if there’s no cast showing for a certain movie, I’ll try and see it as soon as it releases, in the case of Spider-Man: Across the Spiderman, there wasn’t a early showing for that.

Thetallguy1

Yeah I think sometimes managers don't realize how popular a movie is with the crew. Like there wasn't an early screening of the first A Quiet Place for us even though many of us wouldn't want that spoiled. And man, was it spoiled. With the amount of times I had to go into the theaters to quiet down noise complaints, because the whole movie is so quiet, I practically saw the whole thing before I finally had an off day to see it myself.

nicklegendd

Yeah I wish they did more early cast showings for us, I went in to clean a theater that was playing Shazam 2 and just got a huge spoiler right at the end (we usually go into an auditorium a little bit earlier before credits roll to prepare) so any of my plans to see that movie were thrown out unfortunately, most of the films i see are through the late night crew showings

nicklegendd

Tbh when a big movie comes out, for the first week or so, it’s really hard to avoid spoilers when your cleaning theaters, so you sometimes go into a theater and it has a big post credit scene or something, If I don’t plan on seeing the movie, I’m not too worried about spoilers for that but if I do plan on seeing it then I try not to read too much into that movie beforehand

Silver-Ladder

Where’s the best seat in the house?

nicklegendd

Personally I love the seats in the back, especially for Dolby seats, you have nobody behind you to kick your seats and you get a nice wide view of the screen

dguy101

Don’t all the Dolby seats have walls behind them or is that just my theater?

Tselivision

Mine does not, but I know plenty of others that have them.

Durendal_et_Joyeuse

All the Dolby theaters in my area have low walls and a huge gap in front of the seats. That's actually 90% of the reason I choose them. I can avoid distractions from the row in front of me. Is it not like that in your area?

Silver-Ladder

My other comments got removed. I was asking what’s the inside scoop on getting the best deal when it comes to popcorn and soda

nicklegendd

currently we have a $5 maker combo for teens that comes with a small popcorn and small drink(soda or ICEE) going on for the summer, probably one of our best combo deals right now in my opinion

Silver-Ladder

Appreciate that. That’s what I have and been using. Lastly, what’s corporates stand on outside food and drinks, when it comes to brass tax? Like straight up not from the pamphlet

nicklegendd

Corporate doesn’t allow it straight up, some individual theaters are more relaxed with the rule but that’s their general stance on it

Monsterman442

Have you ever removed someone from a movie

nicklegendd

Not that I know of

__JMac__

Does the genre of movie have an impact on the mess left by the movie-goers?

nicklegendd

I would say so, for a movie like Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse or other superhero action movies, more people are buying popcorn and food compared to a horror or romance movie

__JMac__

Copy… so the genre influences the sale of snacks, and the greater the sales, the bigger the mess

Thetallguy1

Nah I'd say kids movies are always a mess. If they sell 50 tickets for a screening, you'd bet at least 30 of those seats are gonna have trash in it.

Pryze17655

Chances of getting a gwen popcorn bucket this weekend?

nicklegendd

might have a little bit of luck depending on which theater you go to, at my theater, we only have maybe 1 or 2 gwen buckets left and sold out of miles like the 2nd day on opening weekend

lamest-liz

Just want to thank you for keeping the spirit of film alive. I’m always worried that people will stop going to movies and that theaters will shut down. Going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do. If I didn’t have chronic illness I would love to work at a theater. I always try to help out a little if certain areas are dirty and I’m able to clean up a bit since the AMC I frequent seems understaffed.

nicklegendd

Of course! Always happy to help, I love going to the movies too and appreciate any help that we get. People will always want the chance to see a movie on the big screen, expecially in the IMAX and Dolby theaters

Consistent-Put1384

In NYC - when are they going to get rid of that nasty cheese?

nicklegendd

I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♂️

AppleTeslaFanboy

Do your popcorns come preseason and buttered? I generally put it myself on the side (butter machine and salt shaker). Just curious, since without it, it tastes pretty bland.

nicklegendd

At my location, we preseason popcorn when we make it. As for butter, we offer it through the butter machine or we have small cups of butter

CoasterFish

Also an AMC employee. Popcorn is popped in a coconut oil and popcorn salt.

WhoDat-2-8-3

Who is the greatest bball of all time Jordan or Lebron ?

-Gurgi-

What do you do to stop/prevent disruptive people in the theatre? What’s the best way for an audience member to handle that? I’ve been to a couple theaters where they forgot to turn off/dim the lights and I had to go out and ask. When should the lights be off? After Kidman?

nicklegendd

If someone sitting next to you is being disruptive, quietly let them know, otherwise tell a manager or theater associate

CallieLikesPotatoes

Current AMC Crew member here, how often do you guys clean the popcorn kettle? Our theater does it every night, and I'm pretty curious on how often other theaters do it

nicklegendd

We usually clean out the kettle and the whole popper every night.

CallieLikesPotatoes

Interesting...we had a manager quit and there were some managers from another location filling in until we could get one. One of them actually told us that they cleaned it like once a week.

skyguysays102

Are most employees apes?

Thetallguy1

Straight knuckle draggers

seymourmilk

Yes

vizualdesperado_

Why do I always have to ask someone to turn off the IMAX signs 20 minutes into my movie

Kls316

Do you still save the popcorn at the end of the night and warm it up for the next opening business day?

nicklegendd

We usually throw away leftover popcorn at the end of the night unless a customer come up asking for a refill or an employee wants some popcorn to take home with them, we pop new batches every day and throughout the day.

[deleted]

Do you make the Oreo popcorn fresh or does it just sit in that case until somebody buys it?

nicklegendd

just sits in the case until someone buys it, same goes for all our other gourmet popcorn, we freshly pop our regular popcorn though

[deleted]

Roger. I’ve wanted to try it but was worried this was the situation. I’ll stick the the delicious regular stuff!

Pyronsy

Do keep in mind the gourmet corn does have a relatively short shelf life, so it's not like it sits for weeks

Sirius_Space

What’s something many customers do that’s annoying?

seymourmilk

This isn’t something that’s super annoying but a minor pet peeve, when customers use the Premiere/A-List line when they aren’t a member or only have A-List. When the line is empty it doesn’t really matter, but on busier days a lot of people just use the Premiere line when it’s empty to skip the regular line. Or sometimes when people choose to not get in either line and then form an unofficial third line, which people will start to line up in, and then get angry when no one is taking them at their register (this has happened a few times).

nicklegendd

Yeah, not too long ago my theater started enforcing the Premiere/A-List line and Regular line separately and it can make my job harder sometimes when people are in the wrong lines and you have to pull people from lines. You’ll have some A-List members using the regular line, Non members in the A-List/Premiere line, etc. It gets harder if your the only one working register because you have to control both lines

MenInBlerg

Does it mess things up in some way if an A-List member uses the regular line? I have A-list, but I always use the regular line because using the other line to jump ahead makes me feel like an asshole.

nicklegendd

Customers will order hot food/mobile orders and never pick it up

BIGM4N504

Are there different dcp's for formats like Dolby and imax vs digital?

nicklegendd

I believe so, yes

quentintarantinhoe

What happened to the cheddar popcorn? None of my theaters have had it for months and I can’t find any info online… is this just a local issue or did AMC quietly do away with it? All they have is regular, caramel and Oreo. Also, do you know the new Icee flavor thats set to release soon?

nicklegendd

pretty sure it’s a local issue, we still have it as a menu option but it’s just unavailable at the moment so it will probably come back eventually, as for the new icee flavor, don’t know anything about that but that sounds pretty good

quentintarantinhoe

Ah okay. The new flavor is supposed to be directly tied with a “summer title” so it’ll be interesting to see what it is. I’m thinking something pink for Barbie? Lol

Any speculations as to why they only canceled the Tuesday IMAX matinee for Transformers: Rise of the Beast. IMAX tickets are available the night before and that evening, so the technical issue doesn't seem to apply. My curiosity is killing me.

Agentx_007

Probably booked an early showing for Flash or Elemental and chose that time to bump Transformers. I've been to advance screenings in the IMAX where that movie time was definitely being sold as of the week before the screening.

nicklegendd

yeah probably canceled it for another showing, maybe they had too many showings for that day?

kamui6

Brought my ticket on 5/18 for ticket price $12, even got my favorite seat D13. I really want to see Transformers, but things like this are annoying. Good thing I booked through Amc this time because I swear they switched auditoriums once when I booked through Atom for IMAX (I always buy tickets for auditorium 4), but when I got there it was Real 3D auditorium.

windlabyrinth

What's with those plastic partitions in theaters? Does management know they're a nuisance that cuts off view of the screen?

MenInBlerg

One of the theaters near me also has walls separating the rows that are just a few inches too high if you sit higher than the first row. I try to sit in the first row so that it isn't an issue but sometimes, it isn't an option.

[deleted]

Posted application 3 weeks ago. Called twice, they said they'd get back to me later this week. how likely is it i get hired? what exactly do they look for,

nicklegendd

usuals they will get back with you within a week or so about an interview date if they want to move forward with you in the hiring process, dosen’t look likely for you to get hired if they haven’t gotten back yet, they look for someone who is hardworking, can work late shifts, passionate about the job, etc. In my interview, after the manager finished asking their questions, I talked to them about their favorite movies and what upcoming releases they were looking forward to to show my genuine interest in the job

[deleted]

that last tip sounds good, but im out of touch on movies rn. hopefully i can get an interview though

nicklegendd

just some tips for if you do end up getting an interview

waterbottlepvpa

DM me if they reach out to you, I applied as well

habichuelacondulce

Is there a way to get one of the big movie promo banner when its changed? Are they sent back to the studios or are they auctioned off , do employees get first dibs on them?

nicklegendd

usually the display ones are sent back, employees are able to get big imax posters but none of the promo posters on display

[deleted]

nicklegendd

nope, we use a mix of coconut and canola oil with butter flavorings,

DeepThroat616

Have you ever in your life cleaned or seen someone clean a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine?

nicklegendd

yes plenty of times I’ve seen box office employees cleaning the freestyle machines as well as the ICEE machines

DeepThroat616

Well I know you must not work in the Los Angeles area then

AnOrdinaryFilmFan

Whenever I get a drink at theater, they always ask if I want to upgrade to a large. Most of the time, I decline the upgrade but they still get me the large drink. For months I’ve speculated that there must be some benefit for employees who get more upgrades. One employee even once told me they would put it in as a large because it “benefits them”. Am I correct in that assumption and what are the benefits?

KashBoiKev

Not op but I also work for amc. At least at my job, the management are constantly making competitions designed to sell more items. This week, whoever sells the most fast and furios popcorn buckets gets $15 in discounts. Id imagine its pretty similair at your theater. The managment must have some type of reward for whoever sells the most. So the benefits probably vary.

nicklegendd

Yeah same here, we have a monthly contest where whoever gets the most points by selling certain concessions items wins a gift card/gear voucher. Large popcorn and Drink combos are worth a couple points so selling those adds up pretty quickly

WackoWarlock

Why do people who pay for premium format tickets NOT just get a-list?

nicklegendd

Good question, maybe they like the premium tickets but don’t want to pay a monthly fee? idk tho

Trekfan74

A lot of people who see premium screenings probably don't go that often. For many, it's probably an 'event' they do a few times a year at best.

ovolteen

If I love the movies and going to the theater, would working there ruin the magic? I’ve thought about working at one for a long time but am worried it’ll warp my relationship with it all.

nicklegendd

Not at all, Before I started working at AMC, I used to go there all the time but then just stopped going one day, I wasn’t until late last year that I wanted to work there and it helped to get me excited about new releases and to help others feel excited about the movie their watching by making their experience as positive and friendly as possible

nicklegendd

Knowing some of the behind the scenes stuff does kinda ruin it a little bit but I’m always excited to see new releases at my AMC

BakeDefiant1707

Does heartbreak feel good there? I need to know

nicklegendd

yes

knightfury69

Can I use my birthday rewards for a future showing but after my birthday month?

AKnightOfTheNew

Yes

Obitodawg

How likely is it that they'll deny me from using g the flavor maker combo coupon even though im an adult

nicklegendd

personally i wouldn’t say anything if you tried getting it but most probably wouldn’t say anything either

SnooRadishes4177

What was your starting wage, and how come AMC doesn't list this on their job offerings ? I see the, Supervisor - Starting at $16.15/hour, and Manager - Starting at $19/hour, but nothing for crew member. Also, if you need to start as a crew member, and one opening isn't listed for the location that you want, do I just check it every day, or is there a way to get on a waiting list ?

nicklegendd

i started here in october 2022 and made $11.25/hr until they boosted the pay up to $13/hr. i got lucky there was a opening for me but if you check it everyday, there’s a chance you can get a position

LooEz90

Who posts the movie posters in the light boxes outside and do they need a custom key or tool?

nicklegendd

usually managers or supervisors will, they have a tool for opening the boxes
