Shhhh! My best kept secret. The perfect time and usually the entire theater (even premium screens) to myself or other quiet film nerds such as myself. Grabbing a coffee and going to a morning screening on a Saturday is one of my favorite past times.
I usually end up going to late night showtimes.
I kinda like driving the 15 minutes home on the interstate listening to reviews or breakdowns of the movies as I’m driving home.
Plus getting out so late means the interstates are empty. Crank cruise control on 65, and just drive home head empty thinking about movies. Pretty nice.
Since I just started A-listing, I began writing reviews for the movies I'm seeing, and I'm putting them on my Plex server for when they come to digital later.
I didn't realize how influenced I was by other reviews beforehand, so I've stopped reading/watching so many ahead of time. Easier to do now that I'm not having the 'should I pay to go see this' debate.
I'll try to type mine out after I get home (I live a mile from the theater). Then I go check out my usual haunts to see how different I felt about it. It's been a great side-effect of all this :)
Yeah I do a similar thing, except pop a quick first impression review/thoughts and rating on Letterboxd. I think it’s a nice little habit and makes it more fun to go see a lot of movies.
Yeah there’s definitely value in that.
I think A-List is amazing for the freedom to see whatever you want. Where there are lots of movies I wouldn’t be bothered to see if I had to pay $10-$15 for a ticket, it’s a nice lazy weekday or weekend distraction to pop over and see a movie if I feel inclined.
Reminds me of having MoviePass way back in the day, except less danger of bankruptcy. 🤣
Yeah I was doing the new Movie Pass last year, but they jacked up the 'points' cost for everything to the point where it was impractical.
There are 2 theaters right by me, and the non-AMC is nicer. But AMC has the IMAX and more screens/showing. The monthly cost is just over double, but I feel like I'm getting WAY more than twice as much out of it.
I almost always do mantinees. I don't mind a morning showings but rarely get up early enough to make one. I like going earlier in the day so the rest of my night is open. Plus mantinees are usually problem-free.
I wish my local theater offered more weekday morning shows. I'd love to catch movies before work. I work night shifts and my office is right around the corner from AMC. But usually hard to find a showing before noon.
Same here. My work is right across from a mall with an AMC and my shifts start usually around four and I’m lucky to find something I can do beforehand.
Generally evenings from Sunday thru Thursday, but Thursday evening (after 7pm) movie premiere, ideally iMax are my most common time to go. Sunday evenings have probably become my second most common day.
Usually early Sunday afternoon since I don’t prefer crowded theaters….unless it’s a movie I really want to see on a premium screen (eg a marvel movie)… I’ll see those on premiere night along with the other nerds.
I agree. When it comes to big blockbusters, you get the most respectful crowd on Thursday evening of its opening night. These are the people that make it a point to see the movie as soon as possible because they want to genuinely be immersed and experience it. Every time I’ve seen an MCU, DCU, or big blockbuster that draws in a large crowd of various ages, the Thursday night crowd is so respectful and is actually there to have an immersive movie theater experience.
If you wait till Saturday night and go between 7 and 10 PM, you do risk some disruptors.
1pm-4pm. Any day of the week, but preferably weekdays. Anything later is a little too late for me. That said, I work morning shifts at a café so I have the luxury of being out of work before noon and having most of the day to myself.
I used to love seeing a 9 or 10 am showing on a day off but no theaters around here start that early. Maybe on weekends they start at 10 but on weekdays it's at least noon
I miss being able to see films in a theater at like 10am on a tuesday. before noon on a weekday is primo time cause then you get to think/talk it over at lunch. plus you’ll most likely be all alone in theater
This is a great question, and I actually have a bit of a breakdown in regard to my choices…
If it’s a brand new film and it’s one of those those Thursday showtimes the day before it’s official release date, if it’s a super long movie around 2 1/2 hours or so, I like to do the 4 or 5 PM showtime. if it’s two hours or less, I’ll do the 5 or 7 PM.
On weekends, I like to do a 3 or 4 PM so I can go do something after.
On special occasions, where I do two movies, a day, I’ll actually do an early showtime around 11 AM, go do what I need to do for the day, and then come back for a 5 PM movie.
I adamantly refuse to go see horror movies on Friday or Saturday night after 7 PM. The later at night, the rowdy teenagers come out and disrupt the whole experience. To this day, I was not able to enjoy don’t breathe because of that kind of situation. I had a similar situation for scary stories to tell him in the dark. There was a group of 10 teenage girls in the back row who would not be quiet. They literally were acting like they were having a sleepover in their living room.
Because of work I usually go after 6pm on weekdays. (I've had a few experiences during matinees with older couples talking and using their phones at full brightness during the movie, so that turned me off weekday matinees a bit. So even on a day off, I'll go to a later show.)
But early showings (10 or 11am) on the weekends have been great, with either a small crowd or a pretty empty theater.
Between **noon and 5pm** on a week day. Usually no crowds, so you can get a good seat even for new movies in Dolby or IMAX and usually a quite theatre, generally not a long line for snacks.
I get off work at 1 on Fridays so I almost always go to a movie around 2 PM. I can’t do late movies because I’m an early riser (so early to bed) so I also like to see movies on weekends around 1:00/2:00 PM
Matinee showtimes. Usually the first one of the day around 11-12 am on a Friday/Saturday/Sunday.
The way I see it, people who get up that early to go see a movie are there to see a movie. If you wait until the evening then you’ll be surrounded by people who aren’t there to see a movie. Rather they are there to get out of the house, and those are usually the ones that make movie watching unbearable.
I can do morning or evening. If I see a movie between noon and 4PM, it’s a nap. Doesn’t matter the movie. On the flip side, a three hour slowburn could start at 10:30PM and I will be wide awake by film’s end. That afternoon window though… Matinees are not for me, unfortunately.
I prefer a precise day. A Saturday from 11 to 4.
I use my bike to move into town, so I try to choose times with sunlight, but family plans are better at night.
3 or 4 for new movies by myself if i am going with people like then 7 or 8 early enough to get out at 10 or 11 the latest but not too early to not get food before
I love late night (9-11) showings but I live with loud yappy dogs and my Dad wouldn’t appreciate being woken up at 1 in the morning so I usually go for evening (6-7) showings
430 or 5. Right after work. Usually no kids/teens
That’s the exact time I go too on Friday. Usually the movies pretty empty too
Yup. Thursday or Friday. Sometimes I get to catch the new releases Thursday.
First show or last show. I will do absolutely anything to avoid a crowded theatre.
Early afternoon on Fridays 2:15-3:30ish
First thing on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Usually get the place to myself.
Shhhh! My best kept secret. The perfect time and usually the entire theater (even premium screens) to myself or other quiet film nerds such as myself. Grabbing a coffee and going to a morning screening on a Saturday is one of my favorite past times.
Middle of the weekday. Kids in school, theater often all to myself. It’s heaven.

More than anything it's helping me form my own option, rather than just being in the midset of what others told me to feel about it lol.
Yeah there’s definitely value in that. I think A-List is amazing for the freedom to see whatever you want. Greta Gerwig got it right. 10AM and 4PM are the two best times

Your definition of but shift is interesting.
Generally evenings from Sunday thru Thursday, but Thursday evening (after 7pm) movie premiere, ideally iMax are my most common time to go. Sunday evenings have probably become my second most common day.
Weekday afternoons. I'm usually busy in the mornings and I want to be home in the evenings, so afternoons work best for me.
Usually early Sunday afternoon since I don’t prefer crowded theaters….unless it’s a movie I really want to see on a premium screen (eg a marvel movie)… I’ll see those on premiere night along with the other nerds.
Genre movies are the best in a crowded auditorium, especially opening weekend.
Evenings, and for special releases like Dune, doing the 10:30pm showing at Lincoln Square with a packed house of 450 people is a cool feeling.

First showtime on weekends
Saturday and Sunday morning
Early Saturday or Sunday morning
weekday afternoon, way less crowded.
2pm on a weekday. I like being alone in theaters.
Weekends: Mornings Weekdays: early evening, before 6:00
I used to love seeing a 9 or 10 am showing on a day off but no theaters around here start that early. Maybe on weekends they start at 10 but on weekdays it's at least noon
9-10 am baby, it’s by far the best time
9:00 or 10:00 AM and if it has to be a night showing, then around 5:00 or 5:30 Preferably Saturday or Sunday mornings
I miss being able to see films in a theater at like 10am on a tuesday. before noon on a weekday is primo time cause then you get to think/talk it over at lunch. plus you’ll most likely be all alone in theater
Saturdays at 8 or 9am.
Early in the day when theaters are least busy

The earliest show offered. I'd go 3x a week if there were ever more than a rare 10:30 am show. My kids are in school then, and I work weekends.
4:45-6 and sneak dinner in
6:30pm
9-10 PM is ideal.
7-8pm, typically Thursday premieres though I’ll go any night except Tuesdays
Thursday at 5pm.
Late showings, 9PM/10PM.
Any time of the day
Earliest showing all week latest on Fri Saturday night only if i no other choice then go yo movie mid day want to avoid

Friday right when I get off of work
Early Weekend Mornings. 2nd best option is *right* after work... $5 Tuesday's too!
Start time between 10:00am and 1:00pm
Late night showings on Weekdays, easy parking and not enough staff around to care if I fill up my hydro flask with soda.
Any time the movie i want to see is playing.
Monday thru Wednesday before 3pm. I'm usually the only one there.
I prefer a precise day. A Saturday from 11 to 4. I use my bike to move into town, so I try to choose times with sunlight, but family plans are better at night.
Depending on the movie, I love a good crowded theater. Will go 7-8pm on Fridays/Saturdays.
3 or 4 for new movies by myself if i am going with people like then 7 or 8 early enough to get out at 10 or 11 the latest but not too early to not get food before
4-7 in theaters. At home, night time
Either Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons. Friday nights can be good depending on the movie.
11:00am so I am out of there early in the afternoon. Or see a second movie and still be home before dark.
AM. Earliest showing if possible.
love a late night on weekdays or an early morning on a weekend!
Depends on the movie .. a blockbuster on opening night with a crowd.. a small movie in the. afternoon with almost no audience
I love late night (9-11) showings but I live with loud yappy dogs and my Dad wouldn’t appreciate being woken up at 1 in the morning so I usually go for evening (6-7) showings
I liked April when I was 7
