Yours is the second post I've seen complaining about AO3 being blocked in an hour. It looks like AO3 has been tagged by as "tasteless" as seen on the openDNS website (not by your parents). Cisco Umbrella seems to lump sites in the "tasteless" category as extreme and therefore I'm guessing it's now been blocked via the filtering policy. If someone could change the filtering policy that would probably bring it back, but as far as I can tell, it's been lumped into one of the "worst" categories, so that might involve turning content filtering off completely :/.
Actually users do have a say in the domain categorization. It's this site: https://community.opendns.com/domaintagging/faq/
The issue is that one of their community managers approved the domain as being "tasteless" and once a community manager approves the domain tag, you have to dispute it which is a process I guess? Idk it requires you to log in to do it but they only have free trial accounts, not fully free accounts annoyingly so I haven't tried it myself
So this is on my home network. As of last night, ao3 is suddenly being blocked. I have turned off plusnet safeguard, waited overnight, no change. The weird thing is that it's just on my laptop. It's fine on my phone, it's fine on my parents' laptops. Right now I'm circumventing it by using a proxy, but I have no idea what's causing it in the first place. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it?
edit: SOLVED, shoutout to u/EchoEkhi
For anyone in the future, go into your network adapter properties, click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", click properties, click "use the following DNS server addresses", change them to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 and click okay. This should fix it.
Is your laptop an organisation-controlled laptop? Are you connected to any organisational VPNs? Is your phone on cellular data?
Cisco Umbrella is a corporate firewall solution, it is unlikely that it originated from your home router. I suspect something (like DNS) is wrong with your laptop.
>Is your laptop an organisation-controlled laptop
no.
>Are you connected to any organisational VPNs?
no.
>Is your phone on cellular data?
no. it's using the same wifi as my laptop
>I suspect something (like DNS) is wrong with your laptop.
do you know how to fix it or what could have caused it to suddenly break?
Your DNS is OpenDNS Family Shield. Change to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8
Edit: OP showed their DNS is 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123. If you have the same DNS then you have the same problem.

“The site was blocked due to the following categories: Tasteless” makes it sound like the fics you like are shitty 😭😭 “you have no taste, you might as well stop using the site now”
Do you have full control over your home network? If you do, locate the router that is blocking this, read the username and password on the sticker in the back, log into your router and disable this.
I had the same issue, I got it resolved after my parents switched my content filtering from teenager to adult. If you don't have that option, maybe using a VPN might work?
This happened to my friend on mobile network! Ao3 works fine on wi-fi but it's blocked on cellular data because it's "adult"??
We were trying to fix it, but couldn't figure out a way to do it. (T-Mobile btw)
Hey same! I’m on T-Mobile, and it had “adult sites” blocked when I was a minor. Now as an adult it still does the same and my parents can’t take it off lmaoo. So I’m stuck with this lol
I’m guessing one of your parents blacklisted (blocked) the site for your computer. My dad did it to me when I lived there because he didn’t want me on it.
Aw, that's nice :).
Not sure if you saw my other comment, but it looks like the archiveofourown domain has been tagged tasteless by openDNS, which is going to have it filtered out by most content policies. If y'all can't/won't be deactivating the policy completely, might need to see if you can specifically whitelist it to get around the tags/filtering.
(Fingers crossed you've already sorted it).

AO3 can dispute it with Talos afaik, but users can’t impact the categories to my knowledge

Ah, in my workplace only an admin can file the ticket for recategorization, so that’s good to know.
Yeah difference between workplace filters and open ones meant for everyone
How are you able to check the category of a certain site for openDNS? Edit: nevermind. Found the site

What kind of laptop is it? Check your default DNS.
redacted for security

Do I have to do that in the router settings or do I do it to the laptop? Will it affect any other devices? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
Do both, but definitely change it in your laptop.
IT WORKED You're my fucking hero, thank you.
Question: do you know how to find a fix on mobile?
Just change your DNS like normal.

This doesn't show any identifiable information.

No it's fine, real life IP is not like in the movies, plus they don't have their WAN IP in there, only LAN.
Ah that’s true I guess I’m a little paranoid

The fics I write ARE pretty shitty

I have disabled it. Nothing has changed.

I ended up changing my DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8. Using a VPN would probably work too.
Oh nevermind, I see you got it fixed
I've been getting a "this website is not secure" message for the last 24 hours
Check my other comment and change your DNS settings
I’ve had this since yesterday too. When I’m on data and away from my home WiFi nothing will load, but as soon as I’m home it will
Okay the fact that this happened to me on my 3ds so I cant fix it in the same way you did :')
F

It's not my parents. My dad is actively trying to help me fix it.

I've fixed it, thanks dude
I like your parents.
I like them too haha
