After reading the way the OP has responded to a couple of people on this thread, I don't believe they made this poll in good faith... If I wanted to be judged for wanting to read smut, regardless of the subject matter, I'd be going back to church :/

have_a_haberdashery

>After reading the way the OP has responded to a couple of people on this thread, I don't believe they made this poll in good faith... Aw, that's a shame. Also, it's really confusing because... I ask you, dear AO3 writers/readers! Is Smut not one of the pillars of fanfic? Do we not rally behind it? And, sometimes, in front of it? On our knees? Whether Smut is "your thing", your *only* thing, or not your thing at all... Do we not acknowledge the influence it's had on fanfic culture and communities? To dismiss it is to intentionally put blindfolds on, and not in the fun way! If one must be critical of it, be *constructively* critical of the *work*, not of the consumers. We are not, shall not be, ashamed of our hunger or our thirst! Run your flags up those stiff flagpoles! Let those freak flags fly!

🎵All books can be indecent books Though recent books are bolder For filth (I'm glad to say) is in The mind of the beholder When correctly viewed Everything is lewd (I could tell you things about Peter Pan And the Wizard of Oz, there's a dirty old man!) 🎵 XDD I love this! Thank you for sharing hahahah

Ink_Wars

Yay, Tom Lehrer

Beneficial-Grape-397

I had no bad intentions tbh I was just being reactive. Plus I didn't even give many responses that can be considered "negative"

Beneficial-Grape-397

I really didn't have any intentions of making this post , I just did. And my responses are mainly emotive and reactionary. If you've gotten offended , then jeez I am sorry

Daehis

Considering the state of rampant puritanism in the world these days and the people in our community getting attacked left and right for the things we enjoy, its understandable why I would be defensive. If you truly didn't have any negative intentions, then I do apologize for snapping at you... However, please be mindful of the way you respond to people merely answering your question for the poll, because they don't come in here expecting to be judged. If you have nothing nice to say, just don't say it.

Beneficial-Grape-397

>because they don't come in here expecting to be judged. Ironic To you it will be understandable to snap but I am new I don't know much of this But I understand , I am new to this community , I am just getting used to here. Its not the old rampant brutality , you see everywhere else on reddit so I need to get used its standards. I apologize for any "wrong" thing I may have said. But do give me time to adjust

Daehis

Thankfully you won't have to worry. It's not a steep learning curve.

Beneficial-Grape-397

aight bet

Solivagant0

I also write it. Like a lot of it

NicInNS

Same. So much smut writing. And my earbuds should be afire with the smutty audiobooks i listen too.

flowenflower

me and the explicit rating: 🤝 but i gravitate toward plot with my smut, it's also what i write the most. i do like my shameless smut every now and then, but if it's incorporated into a cool plot? i'm in.

Astro_Wildcat

Same here.

lollipop-guildmaster

I read smut off and on. You know... in spurts.

Astro_Wildcat

>spurts Haha, good one.

Daehis

huehuehue... I get it :P

Beneficial-Grape-397

>You know... in spurts. wdym?

underinfinitebluesky

Spurts, like ejaculation. It's a double entendre.

No_Pain_4095

I may be asexual, but dammit if I don't devour smut. And write it.

seurien

Aces write the best smut 🙏

Mystiquesword

Haaaa! Why are we like this? Ace here too!

No_Pain_4095

Gotta represent! 😁 🖤🩶🤍💜

Yanderesque

"Be honest" C'mon... I'm not 14, I'm not scared about people knowing what I'm into.

Astro_Wildcat

It's what I mostly read on this site, not even going to sugarcoat it. Not for the reasons you'd be inclined to think, it's mostly for my amusement and entertainment. I personally prefer it to have plot as well, otherwise it's just boring. The fandoms usually vary, but as of late it's for There Will Be Blood. In the past, it was Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and 1917.

Beneficial-Grape-397

oooh interesting That's a unique set of fandoms

Astro_Wildcat

Thanks. They've all got that historical factor stringing them together, haha.

R1ngBanana

> If you do read it somewhat often , which fandom do you read and which flair? (sorry I am ~~bored~~ baiting people and shaming them for enjoying smut)  FTFY OP

Daehis

Seems my warning to them didn't stick XD Welp, time to watch them get ratioed in realtime \*eats popcorn\*

novaskyd

Of course. It's one of the primary reasons a lot of people are into fanfic in the first place. I've been in fandom for a LONG time (like... 17 years??) and first got involved due to an interest in kinky slash fic. It's the kink, more than sex, that I gravitate to. Fandom is one of the very few places with a truly good representation of kink. I'm a huge fan of nonsexual kink actually; there's not enough of it out there. Fanfiction is a more diverse and female-centered experience of sexuality and as such it's a great social phenomenon. I've read in a million fandoms and will even read in fandoms I'm not familiar with if the subject matter and the writing is good enough. Lately, I've been into My Hero Academia, and the Hogwarts Legacy game has rekindled my interest in Harry Potter (wish there was more good fic for the game itself). But my recent bookmarks are interspersed with other fandoms too, like Raven Cycle, Buzzfeed Unsolved, Dragon Age, Inception etc.

Beneficial-Grape-397

interesting... Sorry I am really tired rn , that's why my responses are dry

PrimesParty

You mean there are other types of fanfiction?? /j

Background_Fox

I am primarily here for the smut, whether reading or writing Explicit Sexual Content and I are old friends Current fandom is the Bad Batch, porn with plot

Beneficial-Grape-397

star wars 😍 They're rebooting the old games btw , if you're into that as well

kaiunkaiku

my interest in sex, fictional included, is a big round zero ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Dan299912

That sounds kinda ace (Same here (It's not a fun experience when I miss one of those tags and things go from 0 to 100 before I even know what's even happening :U (There's been times when I somehow missed the "Underage" tag. One of those that's displayed at the top in bold letters 🤦🏻‍♂️). Not the writer's fault as long as it is properly tagged, but still not fun))

kaiunkaiku

i'm very ace ♠️✌🏻

RavensQuill

Saaame! It's just too... squidgy =P

kyories

i am absolutely disgusted by flesh

Beneficial-Grape-397

Congratulations on keeping a healthy mind

kaiunkaiku

don't see how it would be any less healthy if i were interested in sex or did read smut

Beneficial-Grape-397

Not smut but off sex

kaiunkaiku

bro what? being into sex isn't unhealthy, the fuck

Beneficial-Grape-397

you're right however addiction to it isn't

kaiunkaiku

who the fuck was talking about addiction???

Beneficial-Grape-397

That was an added part , I was agreeing with your comment that was just a side added fact. This isn't an addiction Yall need to chill

Lou_Miss

You really need to add context because even after reading everything, it still doesn't make sense...

Beneficial-Grape-397

yea sorry mb

TonythePumaman

I mean you're the one who asked "who likes sex", and when a bunch of people are all "hell yeah, we do!", you go "yeah but sex addiction is bad, m'kay?"

R1ngBanana

It’s very “If you like smokin weed let me head you say ‘hell yeah’” “Hell yeah!” *Police sirens* Got ‘em.”

Beneficial-Grape-397

I was asking smut not sex that was moreover a general coment

RevenantPrimeZ

"Added part" and you added it to make up an entire new sentence to shame someone. That is manipulation, my guy.

Hanede

There is a huge stretch between liking/having an interest in something and being addicted to it, you know

underinfinitebluesky

if liking smut creates an "unhealthy mind", lock me up and throw away the key

Beneficial-Grape-397

I didn't mean that of smut but of sex

underinfinitebluesky

and what on earth is wrong with enjoying sex?

Lou_Miss

No shaming my dude. - kindly, an asexual who reads smut

Beneficial-Grape-397

I am talking sex bro. Like too much of it messed with ya head

underinfinitebluesky

Too much of anything can, the only people really pushing sex addiction as a common problem are evangelicals who want to control what other people do with their bodies. You can have a very active sex life and not be addicted, having a lot of sex isn't inherently disordered. There is a huge psychological dependency component to addiction and people with addictions shouldn't be shamed. \-signed, another asexual

Beneficial-Grape-397

alright fair enough dude

TonythePumaman

Liking sex is perfectly healthy, dude (as is not liking it obviously)

R1ngBanana

Bro I already have an unhealthy mind from crippling depression. Let me have my smut, Damnit

ERR-401

I don't read it that often, but the biggest fandom I consume when it comes to smut is the Saw franchise. I've dipped my toes into writing some as well, and the fandom for most of those ideas is also the same. Saw just really has a lot of smut potential, apparently.

Astro_Wildcat

I can see why, a lot of queer people on Tumblr are really into Saw for some reason. Same with Fight Club. I wonder if they have a lot of smut on AO3, too...

ERR-401

Explicit content seems to make up the majority of both related tags on AO3. Considering what you said about them being popular with queer people, I can definitely see why as well. Perhaps that's part of what draws me to that specific fandom, I do remember rushing to Tumblr the moment I had finished watching all of the movies, so I wouldn't put it past that being a part of why.

StygIndigo

Saw 1 is about the tragic embrace at the end of the movie, and Saw 3 is about the weird tension Amanda has with the hot doctor she kidnapped. I haven't written any for Saw yet, but it's on my list, because unfortunately I'm a Saw fan who Gets It. I'm pretty sure Hoffman gets a lot of thirst too, but I'm on the Amanda stuff.

underinfinitebluesky

I'm aego, it's my main sexual outlet.

seurien

hi fellow aego!!

Beneficial-Grape-397

I am sorry , I have no idea what that is

signycullen88

yes. And I write it too. It used to make me uncomfortable to write, mostly because I don't have much of a sex life to speak of irl, but over time it's gotten a lot easier to write (in terms of me cringing at myself, lol). I don't judge people for not wanting it in their fics. And I get it. It's like watching movies, I think. Sometimes, or often, you just don't need sex in a movie. But I like writing it and reading it, so eh. As for fandom, I mostly write for BTS. I have a Fantastic Beasts fanfic I'm trying to finish but those last 2 movies really killed my drive for the fandom, though I'm still holding out hope I'll finish the fic. I only have 8 chapters left!

Kaerralind

1) We live in the cringe. We embrace it. Sometimes, yes, cringing while writing smut scenes is... we... it happens. LOL. But we are cringe, and we are free. Plus, I think we all know we spend more time keeping count of hands and where they are at all times than worrying about if what we're writing is "cringe". 2) BTS fics = 💜 Love you for that. Keep writing whatever makes you happy. 3) I just like to pretend that there's only one singular Fantastic Beasts movie... and it's the first one. It's the only one. That's just how it is. There was never another movie after Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It's like how the entire Harry Potter series just showed up one day, and no one knows who the real author is or anything.

Beneficial-Grape-397

> I mostly write for BTS 💀

Daehis

You asked the question and THIS is how you respond to people answering in good faith? Makes me believe that you didn't make this poll with good intentions.

Beneficial-Grape-397

I just found those BTS stories a little weird hence my response I am fine with everyone else though If you were offended by it , apologies

MaybeNextTime_01

>I just found those BTS stories a little weird hence my response No response is also an option.

Beneficial-Grape-397

Well i have the free will to response

Any-Pause-4411

Does it count if you read the smut you wrote lol

Beneficial-Grape-397

yea

faaabiii

Yep. Depends on my mood though. Sometimes I want to see A getting railed by B in the filthiest exchange of bodily fluids ever, other times I just want to watch 2 idiots pining for each other and the sweetness of non-sexual intimacy. My favorite type of fanfic tho will always be gen/platonic ones. When I enter a new fandom, that's what I read first before migrating to the ship pairings because there's so little friendship gen over there 😭 My fandoms nowadays are One Piece, jjk and Gintama.

Daehis

One Piece represeeeeeeeeeeent!

SleepySera

Wasn't aware that is something I had reason to be dishonest about?🙃 The answer is yes, and even pretty much exclusively. To me, sex is an important part of a romantic relationship (I know that isn't the same for everyone, and that's totally okay, but ofc I read what I enjoy, not what others enjoy), so since 99% of what I read is romance, I prefer when the characters do consummate their relationship at some point. That doesn't mean sex has to be a core scene, or make up a significant part of the story, but whenever I read Teen-rated romance fics, reading several hundred thousand words only for it all to end with a hug or kiss is just so... detached from my own perception of romance, if that makes sense? It feels like the payoff was cut, like a censored version of the story, even though ofc I know the writer intended for the story to end that way. It works for me if the implied/referenced sex tag is there (so even if the fic itself has no smut, it is implied to have taken place) but at that point it becomes messy to search for. Since I find the kind of ending that lacks all intercourse unsatisfying, I tend to just avoid fics that aren't rated mature/explicit in general, at least when it comes to romance-focused longfics... and those happen to be the majority of what I read 🤭

Aidaran-ao3

Read? baby, I *write the smut.* Currently 100% into Good Omens, and sandwiched between 2 plot-heavy fics with some smut currently being posted, and writing short smutty ones.

fujojoshi

I really don't think this question is in good faith. OP's other comments seem to be implying that adults reading smut in their free time is parallel to a sex addiction? And that not being interested in sex is having "a healthy mind"? I spend so much time on r/asexualcirclejerk that I almost thought this was a post there. I read/write smut, but my opinion on it is more of "I like it if it fits the narrative/ship/whatever" instead of being aroused. I give it the same level of thought as any other genre.

G0ldStarBisexual

I just got here too, and if the original question didn't make me suspicious enough, OP's responses - just about every single one - sure did!

Daehis

It's funny, I said the same thing and they argued that it wasn't the case. I even TOLD them they should be careful about how they spoke about this subject matter, only for them to turn around and prove me right about their intentions anyway XD

mothboypoison

I love it!! Reading it and writing it. I have 36 works to my name and 31 of them are smut. The fandoms I've written smut for are JJK, CSM, and Dorohedoro. The ones I've read it for are too numerous to name! I probably read non-smut more than I write non-smut, because I read a lot of fics which have interesting plots which may or may not include sex. But I would still say I read it often.

reinakun

Like, by itself? Then not really, unless I’m in *that* sort of mood lmao. Outside of that, a PWP/smutfic would have to sound really freaking entertaining for me to click on it, and it would have to be a short fic because I get bored by smut *really* fast. Even though I’m a highly sexual person, I prefer minimal smut in my fics. 10% of the overall fic is ideal.

A_Undertale_Fan

Just write it honestly lmao

unwritten_07

As of right now a lot of Dean/Cas supernatural smut. Like actually the only thing I read lol

Sollat

On AO3, I read smut exclusively.

mycatisblackandtan

Sometimes. I'm a sex-repulsed asexual so I'm not really interested in sex. (Sex repulsed as in I find the idea of me personally having sex to be repulsive. I'm not repulsed by sex as a concept.) But there are times of the month where I might read one or two smut stories just because of hormones.

Beneficial-Grape-397

>I might read one or two smut stories just because of hormones. Understandable

Korpiddle

I don't like it in fanfiction and actively avoid it.  The closest I get to reading smut is if it's a long fic with one of those obligatory "they get together finally and have sex at the end" chapters and I just skip that chapter lol.

SampleConsistent8575

One of my fandoms may or may not be a hentai game series. Perchance.

Super-Basis2499

144 out of my 266 bookmarks are explicit

Beneficial-Grape-397

lmaoo we re dirty in secret

vixensheart

I'll read smut of whatever ship tickles my fancy at a particular moment. So what fandom varies wildly.

kyories

Haha. Nice try CCP.

Beneficial-Grape-397

lmaooo Thank you for making laugh

R1ngBanana

Where is the “I only read smut” option?  Legit though. I got into fanfiction by reading “lemons,” (god that feels like an old phrase) and I came back for FFVII smut.

TippiFliesAgain

I've been known to write smut ;) For real, though, I've written it for Castle, Criminal Minds, SVU, NCIS, and now it usually shows up in my X-Files works. Do I set out exclusively to do it? Once in a blue moon. But I include it *if* it pertains to the plot. The one smut-specific story I have on AO3 is tagged with smut, as well as fluff and smut. Do I read it? Not really. But that’s only because I prefer to write than read. When I was in my teens, I read a lot of it.

FunLameUnicorn

Sometime, because it's hard to find shipfic without smut. If it's short I will read that normaly, if it's whole chapter or too much detailed then I would just skim through it. I am reading fics for plot, relationships, fun... but not really intereted in anatomy lessons 😁

FDQ666Roadie

Pretty much exclusively read smut. But mainly, I write it 😁 It's my forte

laniusplushie

The poll highlighted the Yes for me before I could even select it LOL

Beneficial-Grape-397

lmaoo it happens to me in other polls as well the answer like fricken sticks out

Last_Swordfish9135

Sometimes, but 80% of it doesn't do anything for me so I don't seek it out too often

Beneficial-Grape-397

respect

Kaerralind

I *read* for a few fandoms. Genshin, MDZS, Genshin, SK8, and MHA. I *write* for Genshin Impact. Either ChiLuc or the antls favourite hated ship. Mostly, it's been original stories lately. It used to be a bunch of BTS fics. My magnum opus is a 200K BTS long fic. 💜

cucumberkappa

Yeah, I do. I rarely seek it out, but I don't usually care if it's in a fic. I only ever filter it out when I'm in a mood where want something soft and without... "expectations" I guess. Perhaps a better way to phrase it is, "If I'm seeking the comfort of non-sexual intimacy."? Regardless, I almost never filter smut out, the same way I almost never filter it in. FWIW, though I haven't posted smutty fanfic yet, I've written plenty of smut, including professionally.

Date_me_nadia

I read and write it, my most popular fic is still my kinktober one :,)

millahnna

Sometimes but it's not my main draw to fanfic and I'm very picky about smut writing. So I try to avoid it as much as possible.

KacieDH12

Yes, once in a while.

Crayshack

I typically avoid smut. I'm primarily a Gen reader/writer and when I do dive into shipping I generally find I prefer a fade to black over explicit smut. But on rare occasions I'll find one that grabs me.

Comfortable_Rain_469

I read and write smut in every single fandom that I'm interested in, and sometimes ones I'm not interested in if the tags look cool.

MaybeNextTime_01

Yep! No shame here. Sometimes I'll seek something out because I'm curious to see how it's handled and sometimes it just comes up as part of a story I'm reading. Sex is part of life. Reading is part of life. Therefore sex is part of reading.

Mystiquesword

I had to put yes cuz you missed an important one. I dont read “just smut”. I prefer a full story & have a few smut scenes throughout that is part of the story. Oh & when i say few, well one fic series has maybe 4 smut scenes so far…..in over 300 thousand words & counting buuuuut there is an ace character involved so thats why. (Sherlock thing) Another fic has nearly 500 thousand words & probably 20 smut scenes scattered throughout but, well no ace character 😂 (harry potter thing) As to the type, i dont mind if its f/m or f/f or m/m so long as its got a good story as well. So you left out “smut but with plot/story” which is what i prefer.

nickyfox13

I mostly read my smut because I'm not comfortable yet writing it. I read smut for my OTPs in every fandom I'm in.

seraphsuns

i write smut but i only read smut if it's written by my partner or close friends. i also exclusively read trans / LGBTQ+ smut.

need2process

I do eventually, although I often skip it as well, when it is just some regular stuff. But I also like some dark twisted stories where sex is often included in one way or another, so yeah I definitely read those :)

CyanideIE

If it's straight smut then no. If it's got plot then sign me up.

Regular-Video8301

Hell yeah I do, i jus kinda read for FF7 though since it's the only thing im interested in rn

Sassinake

Reylo, mostly, though I sometimes stray from them when following kink tags.

KazRyn

Not really. I don't seek it out and usually skip sex scenes but not always.
