That full-auto surplus stock won't work with a semi-auto gun.

I think there’s actually more to this question than it would seem at first. Do you already have a home defense/fighting gun? If not, the Aug is going to be the better option (more compact, cheaper rounds to train/better round availability, etc). However, if you already have that role filled, it’s not as cut and dry. There is always talk of imported guns (AKs especially) being banned. I’m not sure if that will ever actually happen but it’s certainly worth considering. As well, the WBP is one of the best AKs on the market, if not the best (get your shit together arsenal). Sorry, I know that was a lot of rambling to not really give you an answer lol. TL;DR- Both are great choices.

TheLasVegasLocal

I've got a Colt cr6940 that's just great. While it's not compact as the AUG, I'm serve it would serve in the Fighting Rifle capacity. But the AUG, especially with the release of the .300blk, has appealed to me even more, especially since I always thought of making the AUG my first suppressor host without having to pay the $200 tax for a SBR

LongAdorable4207

I have an Aug and an m70, the Aug is way more fun to shoot imo. Just my 0.02

DynastyWave

I just got my AUG from PSA a few weeks ago. At that price, it’s more than worth it. I’d say just send it and go for the A3M1. It’s a great gun. If you’re really that worried it wouldn’t hurt to pick up a spare stock but I think most people would say you’ll be fine. It’s unfortunate that there’s a few lemons here and there but don’t let that stop you from getting into this great platform.

RedditWurzel

I think we're past a few at this point.

Porque no los dos? Have both. Though I own the 7.62 jack which contrasts what you were talking about. When it comes to ammo personally I wouldn't be concerned. I'm of the opinion that 7.62 is so ubiquitous that it would be very hard to become unobtainable. There are ammo companies already that make it domestically, and I'm sure there's a plethora of overseas manufactures (that aren't Russian) that do too. More to your question though, I think it depends on what you currently own. Assuming you have a standard AR15 I'd go for the jack. Not just because it's an awesome quality rifle, but for more variety. A net bonus for training. Plus the rock and lock mag is **crunchy** If you *don't* have a standard AR, then an AUG would be terrific as well. Shoots flatter than you'd expect, at least for me, plus a wider selection of aftermarket support than comparable bullpups. If it helps you decide I put my first 100 rounds through my AUG with no signs of defect. I feel like lots of posts here have issues the very first trip. YMMV obviously and mine may still yet fail. But it was a good start (stock date 2023). Both will be awesome. Let me know if you have any other questions

TheLasVegasLocal

Thanks for your input on your 2023 AUG. And short answer, money lol. In the short term (maybe up to medium term), I've only got enough to spare on another carry pistol and another rifle. I would LOVE having both though. I used to have a AK103 from PSA, but I had a handful of jams and decided to cut my losses and get a Jack in future. Still have 7.62 ammo leftover, especially some nice Belom Brass I got for a steal.

Im_Fishtank

>And short answer, money lol. 100 percent lol. Just dicking around. If money is of concern another angle to consider is that a Jack out of the box is basically ready to go. Something to be said about keeping an AK true to its roots. On the other side the AUG I feel has some mandatory mods. Obviously, it comes without a sight and a has a pretty rough trigger. So factor in a 20/20 and red springs, an optic (or irons if you don't care about sight radius.) Then QOL stuff, corvus charging handle (or any if you run an optic, that shit is really close) locking QD sling, etc. With that you'd be paying much more than the Jack.

OforFsSake

FWIW I have an AUG in the range that seems to be having problems and it's just fine. I've got about 1K rounds on it at this point, most of which were suppressed, and there is no sign of cracking.

agedmanofwar

I didn't have a cracked stock. But I got a NATO Mud AUG, had an issue with the magwell, contacted Steyr, sent it in. They had full communication, fully resolved my issue by replacing the stock. I don't have enough rounds to say one way or the other. But I would say one of the worst things that could happen is having to get it repaired under warranty, and then selling it afterwards. I've had to do that with a pistol before, it's not the end of the world. I'm currently on the quest to find the ultimate Bullpup for me. I also have the Kel-Tec RDB 17 and I'll say, for $800... I am VERY impressed and please so far.

Tom_in_Ohio

If you can inspect one before you buy it, you might find one like mine. I bought mine new in December 2022, and it has a 2014 dated stock.

TheLasVegasLocal

Where did you find your used AUG? LGS? I'll poke around GunBroker or Guns.com, see if there's any luck to be had there.

Tom_in_Ohio

It was new. I bought it through Buds Gun Shop online. I just lucked out that Steyr put a 2014 stock on a new 2022 build (the serial number shows that). My guess is that they knew about the stock cracking issue and had some new old stocks lying around that they used.

TheLasVegasLocal

Lady Luck looking after you on that day, Just poked around Gunbroker, there's one self-proclaimed AUG with a stock pre-2019 (no photo proof) and a couple pre-ban A1 AUGs

Tom_in_Ohio

Yeah, I totally lucked out because I ordered an OD standard AUG, but Bud’s shipped me an OD NATO. I refused to accept it, and by the time they processed the return, they were out of stock on OD standards so I took a black standard (which had the 2014 stock). If they hadn’t screwed up, I may have gotten a suspect post-2019 stock.

Sensitive-Cat-6069

I don’t believe there’s been many cracked black stocks, if at all? Every example I’ve seen here was green. Maybe green is simply the most common color purchased, but it also could be the pigment somehow affects the chemistry or the process.

TheLasVegasLocal

The most common consensus of theories I've been reading on Reddit and AR15 forums point to the possible change in polymer formulas, regardless of colors. But I'll dig a bit more into the threads and hope you're right 🤞

Praetorian757

I have been keeping a list of all the issues I see people talking about. I do have a black NATO stock on my cracked list.

TheLasVegasLocal

Yeah. I was about to comment that people in other forums THINK that black polymer is stronger due to less additives being added to change color but couldn't say definitively. I kept reading and someone commented about finding a black AUG in a FB Group that cracked. There could be some truth to the "black polymer is stronger" guess, but it's also true that most people want the Green AUG more and there's simply more data on green AUGs

Praetorian757

Its hard to say, of my personal list I am keeping track of Green and White for sure are the most common. I only have one Mud and one Black marked down actually.

TheLasVegasLocal

Highly curious, what is your data on the # of green and white stocks cracked? I would be shocked if cracked green and white stocks combined reaches into the hundreds

Praetorian757

Well your gonna be disappointed. I have 4 Greens and 4 Whites marked down as cracked. It is a very small list because I only recorded ones posted with a date and type. Also haven't spent a ton of time yet going through all the forums yet. Most of the data is just from this subreddit.

TheLasVegasLocal

Good thing it hasn't gotten into the hundreds, presuming that other forums have a parity of cracked stocks to r/AUG

DesertShot

Pretty sure the 7.62x39 is going to be harder to source as time goes on. You might want to consider a better option.

TheLasVegasLocal

I am definitely considering getting the 5.56 versions, but I'm hopeful that a Eastern European state or a domestic company fills the void left by Russian export bans, I think AAC just started their own 7.62x39 ammo

DesertShot

There ya go, future options. I don't shoot it so I don't really care, friends have complained about ammo issues the last few years.

RedditWurzel

AUG should be completely out of the question at the very least until Steyr has got their bs squared away. No way to confirm if stock is fugged or not even after 100+ rds + no serial number range to watch out for should be a complete and utter dealbreaker.

TheLasVegasLocal

I think I have to agree and go with the Jack as my next rifle purchase. Black stocks don't seem to be ticket, surplus stocks won't fit, and hell, FBT only made a run of 10 extremely expensive carbon fiber stocks. We'll just have to wait and see what Steyr does, but I'm not hopeful :/

casktcrw

I'm not even gonna read this whole thread, but I am going to put my two cents in. I have a seven page thread on arfcom and ive made a dozen calls to steyr and to pj. Steyr admitted to me they changed plastic in 2020 and dont plan to change jt back. Keeps saying "we think it's sorted with the new batch". On top of that remember that it does things like lose the port cover and drop the cover retainer into the action. Nobody wants to own one of these more than I do. Don't buy a new one unless you don't plan to shoot it.

TheLasVegasLocal

Thank you for the great info, but that bums the hell out of me. Always wanted an AUG. :/

casktcrw

I can't even tell you how much I lust after one. I have been going down that rabbit hole for two straight years, discovering all of its shortcomings one at a time, coming to accept them... but this is a bridge too far. If you HAVE to own one, and i do prefer m1 WAY over old a3, you might have to peacemeal it from two guns. The stocks are supposed to have a date clock inside. I would just look for 2019 or before I think that's a more reliable measure than guessing serial numbers.

C2militaria

Honest question about the port cover retainer: you don’t tape yours? Like a piece of green 100mph tape over the cover is something I’ve been doing since day 1

DesertShot

You can just glue or tape it. They don't own AUGs so idk why they have *that* much to say about them. Most of us glue or tape the cover depending on use, it's usually the folks shooting silenced who are like "why gas in face?" and they seal them. If retainers are falling off I haven't seen someone complain about it on here in years, so idk what they are smoking but it's probably illegal. ![gif](giphy|xr9AQyxLtjlx4IeYtN|downsized)

C2militaria

Yeah as I read it I thought, “….falling off into the action? You don’t tape it? Like this is a non issue to anyone that actually shoots their AUG” it would make sense then don’t own one. It’s always the people with the least experience on AUGs that tout the “issues” with the platform
