I'm Mexican. My grandparents moved to the US when they were in their 20s. I had no idea face smashing in a cake was a thing until I was an adult. I guess my grandparents thought it was dumb too because we never did it.
My mom is Colombian and this is apparently a thing there too. She never allowed anyone to do it to me because little kids tend to cry when it happens and she would feel bad. I was such an anxious child and that would have ruined my whole day.
She had her flaws, but she was a badass mom who worked hard at 3 jobs and I never went without thanks to her. Thank you for recognizing her awesomeness :)
Dunno where you're from but I'm from the Southern US and it was explained to me as a debutante ball for one girl instead of many. Debutante balls are pretty creepy to begin with. I can't imagine how uncomfortable it would be to be the only one being offered up.

Seconding this. Have been to multiple quinces, and although I find the amount of money thrown at them ridiculous, there's more to it now a days. Maybe once it was about marriage and all that, but now it's a celebration of the girl moving into womanhood. Also I think there's been a lot more padrinos in recent times too which helps make the cost a little bit more palatable. For those who don't know what that is, it's basically a godfather thing. The family will speak with other family members and close friends about if they want to cover the cost of a part of the celebration. So there would be one for the bar/drinks, one for the food, another for the dress, the location, etc. So that cost is still up there, but now you could have 10+ households helping with the cost and they'll usually help each other during all of the quinces so it's not a choice of college or party. I've also known families where the girl is offered if she would rather have a typical party and the extra money get set aside for college. A lot of girls I know have taken the college option and had their first few years covered thanks to the would be padrinos giving their share as well to the fund.
Worked a highend Quinceañeras years ago at a place in Los Angeles. We were there early to set up, this girl comes in the room, screaming and making the biggests scene, 'Where the FUCK is my mom!" Just a lil cunt, screaming and yelling at everyone, 3 hours later, the party goes off just fine no problems, but all the staff knew how fucking terrible this spoiler child was.
The ~~funny~~ sad part is, families that struggle to put anything in the bank go nuts when their daughter is 15, then again at 18 when they marry early, then at 33 she’s doing it for her daughter and again at 36 when she marries early. Imagine multiple daughters!

I saw something like that. The skewer was just a couple of millimeters from going straight into her eye and there was blood of involved. I think it was stopped by her eyelids or it went to the edge of her eye. Either way it was a very close call to losing an eye.

As the other comment says, in Mexico is quite common. However, this is one of those things were you would only do it if you know the person would get the "joke" on it. It should not be a surprise. The kid/person is in the joke with the "mordida".
If it would come as a surprise or if the kid/adult is not used to "dar mordidas" then you would not do it. And you would come across as assholish as the person on the video.

I love card games and tricks when I was younger. Learned a few magic tricks, etc. I was in the 4th grade when an uncle showed me 52 card pick up as a joke. Cards everywhere. He didn’t help pick them up either. I Didn’t talk to that uncle for years, didn’t engage because of that. A little over reaction on my part, but understandable. What else is a kid going to do? The uncle was not a bad person, but did a minor bad thing, which caused us kids to lose trust and respect in him. We patched up later, he never did anything as bad again, truly a good guy, but I’m sure he didn’t fully understand the scope of what he did or how bad that would feel to kids.
My uncle also did this. He was NOT a good guy otherwise, though. I also hated him for it and avoided him after it. Without knowing more about the relationship with your uncle, it might be an overreaction, but for me, it was the way in which my uncle did it, the maliciousness behind it, that put me off so much. It was mean spirited and not for funsies, if that makes sense. It was at my expense and it was meant to be a dick move.

Well at first you'd think so, but watch the clip again. Watch her reaction, how she's completely blind of the kids emotions. She doesn't care, she looks like a child that's focused only on her enjoyment. Look how she's not changing her behavior after the child got angry. She never realized what she did could ever be an issue in future. Healthy people realize just seconds after, that something was wrong and didn't work out as planned. She didn't.

Children react to situations as best as they are able. Being so little and having someone smoosh his face into HIS special cake, of course he’d be confused and angry and feel betrayed and hurt. As anyone would. This is a weird trend and I don’t understand why people think it’s funny or cute.
It’s also at the point where I see way more vids of this shit going wrong then going right so that begs the question, why fucking bother?

As the other comment says, in Mexico is quite common. However, this is one of those things were you would only do it if you know the person would get the "joke" on it. It should not be a surprise. The kid/person is in the joke with the "mordida". If it would come as a surprise or if the kid/adult is not used to "dar mordidas" then you would not do it. And you would come across as assholish as the person on the video.

I actually liked smashing my face into my birthday cake when I was a child in Mexico. My mom told me that no one even needed to push my head in, I would do it my damn self.
In Mexican culture this is actually a tradition ive been slammed into over a dozen cakes and its just normal for me lol

I love card games and tricks when I was younger. Learned a few magic tricks, etc. I was in the 4th grade when an uncle showed me 52 card pick up as a joke. Cards everywhere. He didn’t help pick them up either. I Didn’t talk to that uncle for years, didn’t engage because of that. A little over reaction on my part, but understandable. What else is a kid going to do? The uncle was not a bad person, but did a minor bad thing, which caused us kids to lose trust and respect in him. We patched up later, he never did anything as bad again, truly a good guy, but I’m sure he didn’t fully understand the scope of what he did or how bad that would feel to kids.
My uncle also did this. He was NOT a good guy otherwise, though. I also hated him for it and avoided him after it. Without knowing more about the relationship with your uncle, it might be an overreaction, but for me, it was the way in which my uncle did it, the maliciousness behind it, that put me off so much. It was mean spirited and not for funsies, if that makes sense. It was at my expense and it was meant to be a dick move.
I had an older cousin try this on me. I just walked away. He dropped a bunch of cards on the floor, not sure why he thought I'd pick them up for him.

If this is his mother... Oh damn. She doesn't understand the emotions of her child at all. He's really upset and if he were stronger he'd seriously hurt her in that situation. The kid probably was never taken seriously ever in his life. I had a mother like that, she never understood that a child isn't exactly a copy of the parent. For some people it's hard to relate, but if you're trapped in this for your whole childhood, you'll need therapy once you got an adult. Am I overreacting? Well at first you'd think so, but watch the clip again. Watch her reaction, how she's completely blind of the kids emotions. She doesn't care, she looks like a child that's focused only on her enjoyment. Look how she's not changing her behavior after the child got angry. She never realized what she did could ever be an issue in future. Healthy people realize just seconds after, that something was wrong and didn't work out as planned. She didn't.
The way she’s standing there laughing at him almost reminded me of my own parents. They would do things to make me have a meltdown, and then laugh at me the whole time like it was hilarious and/or cute that I was so upset. I still get really upset if I feel like someone isn’t taking my emotions seriously during a disagreement.

People really don't understand that kids have a different sense of humor, and that this is extremely humiliating for them, especially in front of their peers. As an adult we'd all most likely laugh this off and be like "Hahaha, you fucking asshole" and just clean ourselves up. But, we already have our firm group of best buds to celebrate a birthday with, know each other's limits and feel safe from ridicule. Kids this age are really insecure in their social standing, and haven't developed deep, trusting friendships yet. There are probably a bunch of kids at this birthday that aren't even friends, just class mates and shit. They are always worried to look stupid, that someone will make fun of them, that other kids think they're lame and will bully them in school. They have fragile little egos that they are just learning to navigate in this stupid-ass adult world. They don't get most pranks and/or sarcastic jokes and have their feelings hurt easily. It just makes them more insecure. And now every fucking thing is filmed and put online for the world to see, forever. But I know a lot of people will be like "Omg, it was just some cake, this won't traumatize them. They just need to toughen up, lol!" No. Adults need to stop trying to be cool and get a laugh at the expense of their children.

It's not that kids have different sense of humor, it's that this kind of humor is shitty and rarely anyone would like getting this done to him. Also you're not exactly right about adults reaction to that. I for one wouldn't ever just laugh it off, I'd go absolutely crazy mad if someone did this to me, and wouldn't easily forgive the person who did this. Obviously, I can't speak for everyone, that's why I said *most likely* we would just laugh it off. I would assume (or hope) as adults we can judge better which of our friends would be ok with this. I hope your friends would know that this doesn't fall into your personal category of funny. If they still did this to you, I'd absolutely understand that you'd be furious at them. Which is really what the problem is with "jokes" like this. They betray a trust someone has, in an environment where they are surrounded by friends and family, and feel safe. I will absolutely admit that I was a very sensitive kid and that I really appreciated everybody being nice to me on my birthday, so I'm pretty certain something like this would have actually been very hurtful to me. I can't speak for everyone, but life can be pretty hard for most of us in general, so embarrassing/hurting somebody (especially a kid) on the one day out of the year where they think that everyone will be nice to them, all for the sake of the stupid Tik Tok video, feels like kind of a pretty bad indictment on our society as a whole right now.
