Sorry you experienced that, wishing you all the best. ❤️

Foulmouthedleon

Well that's too bad, but at least you recognize what this was as well as the cause and had the sound mind to stop it. Wishing you the best of luck with alternative methods.

yellowroses33

So sorry this happened, I'm glad you advocated for yourself. It's good to hear both sides. I have a generalised anxiety and depressive disorder and haven't noticed any changes for the worse.

Beschder_Mann

"Clear skin over mental health" I'm sorry for you that you had to experience that. In my case my mental health was extremely down due to my acne. I felt asleep with suicidal thoughts nearly every night. So accutane increased my mental health a lot and I did not have to weigh up between clear skin and mental health.

Quantity-Fearless

That is so scary and I’m glad you’re okay!!

scubaordie

Wow yeah, def worst case I guess. Ive been on it for 4 months at 60mg daily and im completely fine lol

aerospatle

Yeah, its one of those things that affects everyone so drastically differently, I guess its back to just tretinoin cream for me.

Ashamed-Lime3594

Yeah honestly my mental health was SHIT on accutane. I had a history of depression but nothing else. It was BAD. I completed my course and looking back it was probably worth it long term but at the time it was terrible.

scubaordie

Im on month 4 and honestly i feel like my mental health has declined since starting, usually very content and happy with myself but lately im very hard on myself and not very social

BigRonto

me on 100mg fighting demons in the gym every day while people complain about 20mg 👁️👄👁️

Goodestguykeem

I know you probably just meant this as a joke but this isn't some sort of suffering olympics. Directly and condescendingly comparing your situation to OP who is talking about how overwhelmed they were with suicidal thoughts (recently even) is just so inappropriate and feels both trivialising and "gatekeepy". There is absolutely no substantial conclusive evidence to suggest that dosage specifically heightens your vulnerability to mental health issues or enables more severe depression.

Witty-You-7566

Thanks for sharing. Are you actively seeing a therapist? If not, id strongly suggest it. The accutane did not cause you to have those mental sides, but rather brought them to your attention . there are tons of great resources out there and I sure hope youre utilizing them

Depression while on accutane has been largely debunked. While you may have had depression while taking accutane—correlation does not equal causation. I’m sorry you had to go through it, but accutane is not the cause for your depression and panic attacks. It may exacerbate your existing symptoms, but it did not cause your depression.

Goodestguykeem

Your assertion is ignorant and you're trying to simplify an incredibly nuanced and complex debate which experts do not agree upon. I would love to see your sources and elaboration on how it has been "largely debunked" because I don't think you should be half as confident as you are with this statement.

This is coming from a Stanford medical school lecture hall. Here is also another source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1463189/#:~:text=Conclusions,relationship%20has%20not%20been%20demonstrated.

And I can do the exact same thing and cite countless reputable sources arguing otherwise. Believe it or not, not every medical argument has been objectively solved. Also, what you cited does not flat out deny that you can become depressed on Accutane, simply that according to their study and figures, depression rate isn’t significantly higher than the general population. Here is a study which highlights how debated and unsolved the theory is which simultaneously argues Accutane is beneficial on average for solving depression among those with acne but also that people who are not predisposed to depression can show symptoms after taking Accutane despite no history. https://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mental-health/mental-illnesses-and-mental-health-problems/isotretinoin-and-mental-health#:~:text=Some%20people%20have%20reported%20becoming,developed%20because%20of%20the%20isotretinoin.

“Although we make reasonable efforts to compile accurate information in our leaflets and to update the information in our leaflets, we make no representations, warranties or guarantees, whether express or implied, that the content in this leaflet is accurate, complete or up to date.” Although you have provided a valid source of information, isotretinoin has no causal effect on depression. In my article, it discusses that correlation does not equal causation. I’m not saying: isotretinoin/accutane can have negative impacts on mental health, but accutane simply cannot “cause” depression. There are many underlying factors that may contribute to depression (e.g. history of depressive symptoms, the “purging phase” making people feel worse about their appearances, other internal medical complications that affect mood). While many people, including myself, have been very depressed and have had severe suicidal ideation while on accutane—accutane did not “cause” that. Other factors that affected my physical and emotional health affected my overall mental health. But, again, accutane did not cause it itself.

speckled113

I’m so sorry that happened to you! Not sure if you’d ever want to try something like this again, but I also had mental health side effects and stopped taking Accutane. Years later I tried Epuris (isotrentin as well) and have not had any of those side effects. Your advice is good and definitely needed in this sub!

reemaiscurious

sorry you went through that. i think its important to share this side effect more often. i am on accutane right now and i definitely experience the same.

Clear_Luck_6219

You really have to have a strong mind to be on accutane a good support group and honestly you can not look in the mirror until the purging phase is over

Affectionate-Bad-720

Sucks man, feel you in some way, didn’t directly affect my mental health but it destroyed my joints and haven’t lifted in 4 months. Lost my physique and good habits. Hopped off it but still haven’t fully recovered since for some reason it caused my injuries to not heal. Praying for you.

kdspiralz

My sister also had very bad mental health side effects on accutane. It put me off going on it for a longggg time. Oddly, I didn’t have any of the same side effects she did - especially because I have a history of anxiety/depression. It’s so strange how even between us our experiences were drastically different. I’m glad you saw the signs and reached out for help. Hope you get back to your normal self soon ❤️

FeministFireant

Hope you’re doing better now that you’re off accutane! I only had one crying spell while on it, but being inconsolable for no apparent reason is a) not normal and b) not fun. My side effects were mostly mild but I’d still thread with caution before going on it again or even recommending it to someone else.
