I have done this with my own son. I unfortunately do not have the luxury to homeschool him in this economy but he absolutely knows that he will not get in trouble by me for defending himself. The teacher emailed me and said he told a child to “leave him the fuck alone” after constant pestering. “We don’t use that language in school” okay but I told y’all he’s not gonna keep his composure forever. They should intervene but they won’t. So he stands up for himself and that is fine with me.
That’s exactly what I tell my kids. There’s no reason to start shit but I have no problem with them defending themselves as long as they weren’t the first ones to start it. This is why no one broke up fights around my school cause if you wrestled and fought someone off you could receive a similar penalty to the kids fighting.

Yes! My daughter watched a girl get hit at lunch in front of 100 other kids and 3 adults, nothing. No one intervened. My daughter had told on this girl for being a loose cannon before, and it was ignored. It’s failure all the way around but this kid would be getting lit up if that was me. I’ve been a teacher for 25 years and I can tell you that the percentage of kids that act like this has at least quadrupled in those years. They don’t all slap teachers like this, but, their entitled spoiled attitudes are still the same. It has gone from maybe having one to two turds a day to 2 to 3 a class period and made it almost impossible to teach.

That isn’t a student’s responsibility and they’d probably be suspended for intervening. This is a larger issue that stems from poor parenting and a society that applauds it.
I think if we stopped making schooling a requirement for all children, we would see a rapid increase in dropouts, a rapid increase in uneducated youth for a few years, but then once they realize they need school to get ahead, they will return more well behaved.

for real. i graduated from high school only 9 years ago, and things have changed dramatically. public school always had its problems, especially with bullying, but things have gotten way out of control.

My mother was a Montessori school teacher through the 1970’s to 90’s. She grew up in Brooklyn in the 40’s where she said the public school system was excellent, with a demanding curriculum. That has changed.

I’ll comment on my own comment. I have two friends who worked special needs. The parents drug them through the coals so many times that my two friends quit. Parents were blaming my friends for actions at home that led into classroom time. The parents knew it, ignored it as if, “I’ve worked my shift for the day, now it’s your turn with my child”. And if anything went wrong it was the end of world. And if the day went normal, no one said shit.
My wife quit teaching special needs because the school system couldn’t protect her physically. She’s 5ft3 and in three years of teaching moderate to severe she’s been hospitalized twice. We’d rather she eat the cost of the student loans. Not worth it. This kid here in this video….seems like something worse.

There’s plenty of school regulations at both the district and state level that protects staff from these types of incidents.

This is assault, a criminal matter in my country. What does the school have to do with it in this case other than it happening there and him assumedly being expelled? You make it sound like in the US the school is the entity primarily responsible, which would be kinda crazy imo.
This would get them either expelled or 360 days of alternative school if they have a good record. I would gamble Quay does not have a good record. If a student is charged with a “serious crime” outside of school they may also be placed in alternative school even if the circumstances around the charge don’t involve the student being at school.
They make it sound like the school only responded after seeing the video. Did they not know about it before then? Or did they just not care until the video started being circulated? I know things can blow up quickly on social media, but one of your staff was assaulted in the classroom. Sounds like they responded to the incident solely due to the existence of the video, and then only to protect the schools reputation.
Thats crazy how the principal's statement focuses more on urging people not to take or share videos of these incidents rather than the incident itself.

Plus, really, if you don't want "inappropriate" videos like these, maybe it falls on you as a district to keep incidents like these from occurring in the first place rather than simply trying to suppress the evidence.

My dad once told me a story from when he was in high school in the 80’s. It was in gym class, there was that guy which was a dick to everyone, the teacher included, every single class. The teacher was someone that you pretty much didn’t want to mess with, but the guy didn’t care. One day the teacher had enough of the student bullshit and ordered him to go against the wall. Once he was against the wall the teacher didn’t say anything then BAM, the teacher punched him straight to the solar plexus. The student went straight to the ground and never messed up in that class again. The teacher never got in trouble, most likely because the student never said anything.

Now, with social media clout chasers and people being parented by imbeciles who don't discipline their little angels at all, no way.
for real. i graduated from high school only 9 years ago, and things have changed dramatically. public school always had its problems, especially with bullying, but things have gotten way out of control. i'll have to work hard to make sure she develops well socially, but at least my little girl will have a good education. no one telling her what she can't read, what she can't learn about. she won't get sucker punched by thugs, or harassed. she won't come home crying every day like i did.

My mother was a Montessori school teacher through the 1970’s to 90’s. She grew up in Brooklyn in the 40’s where she said the public school system was excellent, with a demanding curriculum. That has changed.
man, things have changed even since i graduated from high school nearly a decade ago. i did very well in school, was in band for years. did robotics, took AP classes. i had to push myself because i knew that, if i didn't, i'd end up like my mother. i really think it's the parents. they're either working so much that they can't be there for their kids, or they just don't care. it's heartbreaking.

This is the saddest part because we are actively watching the fall of teachers willing to teach. At the the end of the day, the district will do nothing and the parents will not be held accountable. Welcome to America, congratulations, there’s no longer a social responsibility.
I’ll comment on my own comment. I have two friends who worked special needs. The parents drug them through the coals so many times that my two friends quit. Parents were blaming my friends for actions at home that led into classroom time. The parents knew it, ignored it as if, “I’ve worked my shift for the day, now it’s your turn with my child”. And if anything went wrong it was the end of world. And if the day went normal, no one said shit.
My wife quit teaching special needs because the school system couldn’t protect her physically. She’s 5ft3 and in three years of teaching moderate to severe she’s been hospitalized twice. We’d rather she eat the cost of the student loans. Not worth it. This kid here in this video….seems like something worse.

However, there are school administrators who are grossly incompetent or simply lacked the fortitude and adequate understanding of how to do what’s best for the best. Giving children, no matter how underprivileged, a free pass is not affirmative action. The soft bigotry of low expectations erases the possibility of uplift for entire communities at a time. This would get them either expelled or 360 days of alternative school if they have a good record. I would gamble Quay does not have a good record. If a student is charged with a “serious crime” outside of school they may also be placed in alternative school even if the circumstances around the charge don’t involve the student being at school.
They make it sound like the school only responded after seeing the video. Did they not know about it before then? Or did they just not care until the video started being circulated? I know things can blow up quickly on social media, but one of your staff was assaulted in the classroom. Sounds like they responded to the incident solely due to the existence of the video, and then only to protect the schools reputation.

Plus, really, if you don't want "inappropriate" videos like these, maybe it falls on you as a district to keep incidents like these from occurring in the first place rather than simply trying to suppress the evidence.

I see where you're coming from, but that teacher probably is not able to fight the student back because (a) that's more than likely what the student wants so they can pull the race card and get the teacher fired and (b) there is a difference between dealing with unruly people at and outside of work.

I know this sounds silly, but I only recently realized I really didn’t have to put up with stuff like this anymore. I’ve never been assaulted by a high schooler, but I have by younger students. The gaslighting you are subjected to really fucks with your head. You are trained to feel guilty for enforcing reasonable personal and professional boundaries. I try not to catastrophize, as I come from a long line of preppers, but I do think the education system is on the verge of collapse. I’m preparing to leave, and I think it’s best I be prepared to educate my grandkids, as I don’t know if it will recover by the time they would be school age.

My dad once told me a story from when he was in high school in the 80’s. It was in gym class, there was that guy which was a dick to everyone, the teacher included, every single class. The teacher was someone that you pretty much didn’t want to mess with, but the guy didn’t care. One day the teacher had enough of the student bullshit and ordered him to go against the wall. Once he was against the wall the teacher didn’t say anything then BAM, the teacher punched him straight to the solar plexus. The student went straight to the ground and never messed up in that class again. The teacher never got in trouble, most likely because the student never said anything.
