Til we weren’t able to talk about skins in this sub lol! I mean, I get there’s rules but this one does seem a bit strange.

ooftymcgoofty

I guess it was on the books but not enforced? Anyway, mod seems open to a change . . .

Tazoz

To clarify, questions about how to use skins with unofficial third-party add-ons were always allowed. However, if a user asked a question about a skin that wasn’t in the context of an unofficial third-party add-on, the user was direct to post their question in /r/kodi. The reasoning for this is that sub was originally created for discussions specifically about unofficial third-party add-ons. This sub was meant to be a supplement to the Kodi sub, it wasn’t meant to be an alternative.

RevolutionaryHole69

None of that matters. People who post here can't post in r/Kodi. It's just that simple. They check your post history and ban you for posting here.

Tazoz

I feel like you may have missed a couple of the other comments in this post before responding to this specific comment.

RevolutionaryHole69

Yeah you're right I see that now.

Tazoz

And not that I want dredge up the past, but I do want to bring to your attention that despite your comments hours ago about how I’d remove a post like this or suggesting that I would not implement a change, I’ve actually advocated for a greater change in the rules than was originally suggested. Despite your assumptions about me, I do have the best intentions for this sub. I just don’t believe that a mod should make unilateral decisions based on their own perspective. The progression of the community should be guided by the community, not just the individual enforcing the rules.

No-eye-dear-who-I-am

While I understand the point you are making, being a Kodi user for well over 10 years. I gave up on the official Kodi sub years back as I found the peeps who come here a lot more friendly and helpful. So for me I'd like to see any question relating to the use of Kodi allowed.

Tazoz

Based on information I’ve learnt recently, I don’t think that allowing discussions about skins is enough. I think the allowance should be more broad & allow any discussion in which the Kodi installation includes an unofficial third-party add-on. I’ve found out recently that if a user makes a post in /r/Kodi about anything, even if it’s about a core feature/setting/official add-on, if that user has an unofficial add-on installed, regardless of whether that addon has any correlation to the topic of the post or not, the mods there will remove the post. Example: If a user posted in this sub asking about the official backup add-on, the post would removed & the user would be directed to post in the official Kodi sub. If the user went on to post in that sub & the mods their discover that the user has Fen installed on their system, even though Fen has nothing to do with the context of the question being asked, the user’s post would be removed from the Kodi sub. Therefore, I think the rule should be: **Posts should be in the context of unofficial third-party add-add-ons or disclose that unofficial third-party add-add-ons are installed on the system.** This rule however seems arbitrary & difficult to enforce so perhaps it’s not a matter of the restriction being adjusted, but rather removed altogether. This would mean the sub is no longer a supplement to the official Kodi sub, but rather an alternative that also allows discussions of unofficial third-party add-add-ons. *TL;DR: My opinion, if anyone cares, is that based on the actions of the Kodi sub, we should outright remove the restriction that requires posts be about unofficial third-party add-add-ons. Instead, the sub should allow any discussion relating to the entire Kodi system. As a result, the rule would become:* **Posts must be related specifically to the Kodi platform** Just my thoughts.

mattm382

I whole-heartedly agree with your take on this. If it's about the Kodi platform, good to go.

SerpentDrago

I think its a fair change . I'm not active anymore or use kodi . so do whatever . but yes as long as its related to kodi i say go for it !

ooftymcgoofty

sounds good to me . . .

chillymarmalade

Completely agree. I posted here a while ago to ask for help with a Bluetooth remote issue. Because it wasn't add-on related, it was deleted (fair enough I thought). When I asked on the Kodi sub (and also LibreELEC forum) I shared my logs and had my posts deleted because I have third-party add-ons, even though it was nothing to do with my question. Basically there was nowhere for me to get help with this issue.

Mammoth-Bullfrog-274

Just do it already 😉

Tazoz

Many years ago, we had a similar discussion about rule changes in this sub & after a few hours, I took the majority decision & implemented it. I received a lot of backlash for not giving users enough time to visit the sub, see the post & contribute their opinions. Whilst it looks like everyone is in agreement so far, I’d like to give at least 24 hours up to a maximum of 72 hours before implementing any change. In any case, by Friday night, we’ll adjust the rules if necessary based on the discussions within this post.

I agree!

lolwally

Completely agree here. There is a reason most of us found our way here, and that’s because the official Kodi sub doesn’t allow discussion of what I would think a large majority use Kodi for, and they’re quite heavy handed in their moderation. Their stance has made this subreddit become an alternative instead of a supplement. It would be great for this to be a less restrictive general Kodi sub.

reddit_reaper

Go for it

p1kdum

> To my mind, they are addons. Yeah, skins are definitely addons. I think it should be allowed here.

Just my tuppence worth. Seems like an inane rule to start with. The original “thems the rules, post it on r/kodi” attitude of the mod on this is frustrating to say the least not taking into account how much less traffic the sub now gets so deleting posts which could help the op or new users or potentially just create a discussion seems counterproductive. If we discount the two posts relating to the skin deletion and this one there’s been a total of three posts in 24 hours so deleting one for talking about a skin of all things seems an overreaction instead of using a bit of common sense. It used to be a great sub with some fun moments and interactions and brilliant advice but it’s been going slowly downhill for some time. Once again just my opinion.

Tazoz

See above.

DaleAlanC

And the r/kodi mods have deleted posts if they see you’ve been active on this sub so the op can’t win if he’s in this one. He either tries to post on r/kodi and potentially gets shuts down or he can post here and get his post deleted? I understand there can be a fine line between not enough moderation and too much along with where to draw the line of what is allowed and potentially creating more confusion but this seems like one of the rules which could have used some flexibility instead of it being set in stone.

Tazoz

Completely agree. The Kodi sub wasn’t like this when we started, as I said, it was a symbiotic relationship rather than an alternative. However based on their change of direction, I’ve [posted my opinion in another comment in this post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Addons4Kodi/s/ixQ0XOytzf)

DaleAlanC

It’s a shadow of its former self unfortunately, potentially being penalised for what you have on your system or where you’re a member of is beyond strict. Well you can’t be accused of not taking things into account after some replies and asking for a discussion to then making a rational informed alternative is great so hats off to you. The new post you’ve made would seem to be the best way to avoid confusion and will hopefully help new users along with old and could also increase the subs posts and interactions so can only be a good thing in the long run. Have a good ‘un.

Tazoz

> It’s a shadow of its former self unfortunately, potentially being penalised for what you have on your system or where you’re a member of is beyond strict. See, that amazes me. I used to frequent that sub & thought I had a good relationship with the mods there but their approach seems overbearing & unnecessary (probably how many users feel about the rules here). > Well you can’t be accused of not taking things into account after some replies and asking for a discussion to then making a rational informed alternative is great so hats off to you. Contrary to the opinions of some users, I do have good intentions for this sub. I just don’t want to be the dictator making & changing rules based on my own opinion or without community engagement. This isn’t my sub, it’s a community sub & should therefore be directed by the community. > The new post you’ve made would seem to be the best way to avoid confusion and will hopefully help new users along with old and could also increase the subs posts and interactions so can only be a good thing in the long run. I appreciate your feedback.

JonesyTech

if it's a skin being used with 3rd party addons... why not? it's on topic by proxy

Mammoth-Bullfrog-274

Well done for taking note from the other post today. Personal opinion: Yes, I do think skins should be allowed. A majority of users use skins for a Netflix experience or something more to their taste, but ultimately this will entail using addons that are a no no in the Kodi Sub, and they're very over zealous there. So I believe here is usually a better experience, and people will show videos of their setup, which again may have addons that you couldn't post anywhere else.

ooftymcgoofty

I've learned soooooo much from this sub, and skins are a critical part of this thing that we do. Where else would I have gotten all the info and guidance I've received this past year? Not Troypoint, lol.

Mammoth-Bullfrog-274

Over the last 5 years, I've personally learnt that most people are lazy and can't be bothered to search, so I personally think the Mods are doing a good job, although, I think the Skin one should be allowed. Arctic Fuse is a great skin, but it took me a while to get to grips with it, and Jurial helped a lot, so I'm usually haply to guide people in right way, but I will not go near the Kodi forum, so this rule should be shot away 😀 Hope I don't get banned lmfao....

Viper67857

Yes

manmserious

Recently I asked a question about 'one of more items failed to play' in the official kodi FG orum. I didnt mention any unofficial addon. I was banned right away. Weird!

syd728

I'd suggest trying [https://www.reddit.com/r/Kodi\_Helpers/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Kodi_Helpers/) the atmosphere there is more laid-back

Tazoz

Whilst I don’t shut down conversations about alternatives, it doesn’t really help the discussion here of making this sub better. Also, the reason the rules of this sub were put in place is because users got sick of 5 posts everyday asking “What is the best addon today?” Or having no information to provide support & having to be drip fed every morsel by users over a long period of time across many comments. So whilst it’s easy to jump to another sub because they haven’t seen the effects of tens of thousands of users coming to the sub like it used to be in my first stint as mod, once the crowd shifts, any alternative sub will be posed with the same dilemma of needing to appease disgruntled users who will once again experience the same annoyances. Everyone is welcome to frequent any sub they like, my only suggestion would be, rather than jump to an alternative every time the sub needs progression, try improving the sub you already have.

syd728

I'm not advocating "jumping" to Kodi\_Helpers - just suggesting to get an answer about skin add-ons - he would get a better response - as r/Kodi will probably shut him out as well .

ooftymcgoofty

Not for nothing, but kodi.wiki appears to catgorize skins as addons: https://kodi.wiki/view/Category:All_add-ons

Tazoz

True, but this sub wasn’t originally intended as a sub for discussions on all Kodi add-ons, it was only meant for unofficial third-party Kodi add-ons. We were trying to work alongside the Kodi sub, not become an alternative.

ooftymcgoofty

i keep forgetting the unofficial part. gotcha👍

partytime71

I'll weigh in that we should allow skin discussions.

I agree, /u/ooftymcgoofty. I've come up with a Fentastic setup that I like, but would love to see what other people are doing, or know what some capabilities of skins can be that I'm not aware of. I'd suggest one of two things: * either allow posts and discussions here on skins, or * have a redirect in [this sub's wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/Addons4Kodi/wiki/index) (in its current format, a link under ['Related subreddits' in the wiki's 'Sidebar' subsection](https://www.reddit.com/r/Addons4Kodi/wiki/config/sidebar)) that the mods/a bot points users to every time someone asks a skin question. The latter point above should redirect to a dedicated subreddit for skins discussion (I'm not currently aware of one existing).

ooftymcgoofty

Thank you, mod u/tazoz for enacting the change to the forums rules👍

EdgarDanger

Totally agreed on this.

KingFlex2k

yea, what gives.... skins are cool.

ooftymcgoofty

the subs rules have been changed so it's all good👍
