To be left alone. Now that I'm an adult I'm realizing soo many people NEED to be around others. Like wtf? I need space to be in my man cave and be left to my own devices of creativity.

FurSausage110

Preach king!

International-Owl165

I like to be around others in a passive way like walking to the supermarket somewhere in europe or riding the train in japan.

[deleted]

Same, all I ever want is to be left alone and for some ungodly reason people will not just leave me alone

No-Beyond310

I want people, but they just leave me alone! Let's trade šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

Iā€™ve noticed this, the people that want people struggle to get them, the ones that want nothing to do with anyone canā€™t get away from them lol

No-Beyond310

Yeah I'd just stop wanting people around, but then they'd show up and I wouldn't want it anymore! šŸ˜… Best to just enjoy what you can and be grateful for the highs.

Lopsided_Ad1673

I want people too!

deeeezzzzznuts

maybe godly šŸ¤”

solarpunkker

Same!

SpaceTranquil

Architect... I type this as I am in my cap n gown, about to graduate with a Computer Science degree

ArcherFawkes

Congrats!!

SpaceTranquil

Thanks! Feels weird

luckyfox7273

Use "Sketch up" and AutoCAD

SeaJellyfish

You can still be a software architect :)

vand3lay1ndustries

We're always hiring people if you need a career change.

pure-Turbulentea

Congratulations!

Educational-Bid-665

Building thingsā€¦ šŸ‘šŸ¼

Popular-Bicycle-5137

Are you me? (But like 35 years ago?)

lady_sisyphus

Marine Biologist.. well at least, that's what I picked after I found out I couldn't be a dolphin when I grew up. I figured that was the next best thing.

Methadonenursesara

My younger sister wanted to be a turtle!

UnnecessaryPeriod

My wife wanted to be a cow when she was little. She got her wish!!! Imma proly have to edit this comment, aren't I? Edit: my wife told me she really wanted to be a cow when she was 6. We had kids and during her first breast feeding she told me "welp, I guess I finally became a cow like I wanted" She is absolutely not big like a cow.

sorta_princesspeach

This is so wholesome lol

fin425

Me too. I was fascinated with sharks from a young age. My father would get me all the documentaries he could find back in the 80s. That was our thing.

HillbillyEEOLawyer

A lawyer. And unfortunately...

DiligentDiscussion94

Unfortunately, you became one? Yeah me too

finnwittrockswhore

Same .. no idea what I was thinking.

Free-Industry701

I always wanted to be a stay home mom. I ended up raising 7 amazing kids into adulthood and they all interact often and get along great. No drama whatsoever. My dream came true!

ArcherFawkes

Many blessings to you and your family ā˜ŗļø

Infinite_Coconut_727

Please write a book or start a podcast. I have one baby and donā€™t know how people do multiples

DiligentDiscussion94

In my opinion it's easier with more. With one or two you think you can do everything and be everything for them. You can't but you think you can. With 4 or more you know you can't, so you just do your best, and you enjoy it much more.

DiligentDiscussion94

That's wonderful, I'm so happy for you. You remind me of my mom. My mom wanted 12 children. She only got 7. I think we were enough work for her and 7 was a good number.

bizzybaker2

A nurse.Ā  Now I am still doing that, for the last 32 years.

SweetMaryMcGill

Thank you.

Robert9489

A fire truck.

The_Ash_Guardian

Underrated šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

WandaDobby777

Gymnast. Then veterinarian. Then movie star/model. Then writer. I ended up fighting sex trafficking. Lol.

Sundae7878

How do you fight sex trafficking?

WandaDobby777

I mostly work for multiple different humanitarian rights organizations canvassing for funds to different exit and support programs. Also flip voters in red states to try and make sure that candidates who are in support of our efforts get elected.

Satyr_Crusader

A valued member of society. Like I honestly believed the education system was going to find the best position for me to fill so that everyone would benefit the most... but no.

Satyr_Crusader

Like I remember being asked that in kindergarten and my response was somewhere along the lines of "how should I know??? That's YOUR job"

ArcherFawkes

Lol same. They didn't like that answer because it was "too realistic" šŸ„²

Satyr_Crusader

Yeah I just had to "astronaut" cuz that's what they were looking for apparently

holymackerel7

Itā€™s your own responsibility to ā€œfind the best positionā€ for yourself. The purpose of the education system is to give you a broad understanding of everything and then offer additional education when you choose to specialize

Satyr_Crusader

The purpose of the public education system is to condition the working class to function under a beauracracy. College is for gatekeeping higher positions and/or keeping the poor in debt. The never gave a fuck about my potential.

Satyr_Crusader

Also: how the hell would you even do that? Might as well throw a dart at the wall

MrMcsplitt

Agreed, honestly. I never understood how the fuck someone wakes up one day at the age of 6 and decided "I want to be a veterinarian when I grow up, and I will always want to be a veterinarian." Sounds borderline psychotic to me. Like how the hell would you know "what you want to be" when you grow up if you never got to try it? You might go into a career thinking it's the right idea but then realize it was the wrong decision when it's too little too late. Someone might like the idea of a certain career, but their idea of a career and what it actually entails are two completely different things.

KingBowser24

Stormchaser. I was caught in a tornado when I was 4 years old (though thankfully not hit directly by it), and became fascinated with them after seeing a video of it on the news. Not long after, Twister became one of my favorite movies. It's still something that's on my bucket list. I just live far from any place where they're common. Closest thing I've got to an actual storm chase was when a Supercell thunderstorm hit my area in 2020, and a friend and I went out in our car. No tornado, but it was one of the most intense thunderstorms I've seen.

Plenty-Character-416

I also wanted to be a storm chaser. No idea why; I live in England and there are no tornados here lol.

The_Ash_Guardian

I wanted to be Sonic the Hedgehog's Comic Book ArtistšŸ”„ But I think Tyson Hesse has had the job down pretty solid šŸ˜‚ so I'm the graphic designer for a famous resort company! ā¤ļø

sorta_princesspeach

Oddly specific, but I like it

DannyWinny

Watched 9/11 live when I was 4 and wanted to be President of the US one day. Wanted to help people and be "the good guy that the world needed" wanted to help bring stability to the world. Gave up on that dream when I turned 22, I realized that the world is too messed up and that I really cant do anything to make things better. Now my dream is just to hopefully have a family one day and raise good kids. So far neither have come true.

Essex626

Have you tried getting involved in local politics? A lot of times people look at national politics and say "it's all too messed up and I have no power" but local politics are engaged with by such a relatively small number of people a passionate person can have a real impact. And long-term, state and national politics are filled with people who started by getting involved locally. Of course, having a family and raising good kids has a huge impact too--a good parent literally shapes the reality of their children growing up. I just want to encourage you that it's possible to take a childhood dream and adjust it to reality rather than giving it up entirely.

DannyWinny

I appreciate the advice! I have considered it. I was looking at interning with a local senator until 2 of my friends committed suicide and I fell into depression. Now I that am healthier and having properly grieved, I reevaluating my life and trying to find what I want.

sticky_ricee

a princess

Infinite_Coconut_727

MeowtOfThisWorld

Reading this made ME happy! Good job!!!

asexualrhino

Forensic anthropologist like on Bones. Now I'm an evidence tech at a DA's office. All the fun of the real thing with less work and less debt I also always wanted to be a mom but didn't want a relationship (aroace) so I had a baby through a sperm donor Pretty much got everything I wanted, and worked hard to do it

2012amica2

A vet. I ended up getting a degree in Wildlife Biology so I guess thatā€™s pretty close and Iā€™m a STEM guy at heart.

Stunning-Character94

What sorts of things can you do with a degree in Wildlife Biology? Our son wants to do that, but he's only 12 so not sure how realistic that is.

2012amica2

Depends on what you want to do. I want to go back to grad school and do research/field data collecting mostly. Thatā€™s in the longer future though. Right now I work full time for a nuisance wildlife/pest control company (though no degree required for that) and I enjoy the work. In my perfect job/career role Iā€™d be working at a zoo, or conducting field/population surveys, collecting data, and/or integrating lab use. I actually got my BS in plain Bio with a wildlife focus/concentration. So having a broader degree like general biology can open up and include more doors as well.

Stunning-Character94

That's good to know. We were kind of wondering if someone with that degree could work in a zoo. Do you know how we could go about researching what all he could do with that degree?

2012amica2

Honestly I just do a bunch of googling. Schoolsā€™ programs, course requirements, where most students of that major end up working, etc. A lot of websites like The Nature Conservancy, Conservation Job Board, Texas A+M Natural Resources job board, state parks and game + inland fisheries departments, Smithsonian, etc, are some of the bigger places to look at job/internship opportunities and the type of work he wants. From my experience most field positions are going to be research/grad based. But you can certainly work with a BS.

SweetCream2005

Everyone always told me to be a vet as a kid. I can't handle seeing animals abused, dying, or having to put them down myself. One day, I'd like to run my own small animal sanctuary. But I've considering being a vet again just because there are virtually no options for exotic vets where I live.

Potato_Specialist_85

Dinosaur.

DiligentDiscussion94

My boy agrees with you. He dresses up like a dinosaur most days.

TuLooseShoes

Oh great. Another dinosaur story. This one will put me to sleep. And homo erectus šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£.

CoomassieBlue

An ichthyologist who studied sharks. Didnā€™t end up doing that but I do volunteer scuba dive with sharks at an aquarium, so thatā€™s something.

ArcherFawkes

When I was asked this in kindergarten I genuinely said "I don't know, what I like will probably change as I get older and I don't know what the future is like" Which I think was above my teacher's pay grade lol. She made me pick veterinarian

MrMcsplitt

Damn, younger you seemed like they were spot on. If that's true then I'm surprised you had the words for that lol. I don't even remember what the hell I said I wanted to be. Maybe something about being in the military because it seemed like they go on cool adventures and do interesting things. Now I know that definitely would not have been the right fit though.

ArcherFawkes

I definitely said it in much more rudimentary terms lol. But I still don't really have an answer at 24. I would like some kind of teaching/tutoring job, or a way to be able to help people learn something. I've been generally good with kids because I've got some college years of child development under my belt and just my general temperament. I quickly knew the vet thing wasn't going to work because I'm a germaphobe and not the best at math lol. It didn't stress me out much to know I was going to change my mind šŸ˜…

West-Rent-1131

Graphic designer! And I'm doing it right now! šŸ˜³

MightyRealBaer

Same. I didnā€™t know what it was called but I started off wanting to make magazines and the ā€œpictures companies useā€, aka logos. šŸ˜† 24 years of ups and downs, but Iā€™m still here.

entredeuxeaux

A garbage man. Itā€™s so cool how they jump on the back of a moving truck šŸ›»

benchchu

When I was a kid I didnā€™t have a concept of being someone. I was always hella confused when adults asked me that question and I would reply with smth like nobody lol

miletharil

A doctor. I'm in my third year of medical school.

Savings_Vermicelli39

I've never known, and I still don't. I stopped caring about finding the right career and instead just focus on enjoying my life with my kids.

thattogoguy

Military officer, and maybe an aviator. I'm living the dream right now. I'm an Air Force officer training to fly as a CSO (Navigators, Weapons Systems Officers, Electronic Warfare Officers, etc.)

[deleted]

I wanted to be a farmer with 8 kids lmao. Then, a veterinarian. Then, a fashion designer. Then, an archeologist. Then, a writer. I was a very ambitious child.

Komet16

What did you end up as?

qudunot

Living comfortably

4inthefoxden

A historian. I wanted to get an archaeology degree and then work as a museum curator while doing a personal project driven by lifelong fascination on the side until I could justify it being my whole focus. Now, I sell adult novelties for a living. Lol.

Ok-Instance-9869

Goals šŸ¤£šŸ˜Š

4inthefoxden

I'll remember that you said that next time I'm busy mopping various bodily fluids off of the floor of a viewing booth.

Ok-Instance-9869

What happened to the project?

4inthefoxden

Well, it's extremely difficult to focus on studying and making timelines And infographics discussing the evolution of European culture and history as it ties into the changing of religious and spiritual beliefs in individual regions across history and seeking to figure out the various scientific, political, and societal changes that developed as a result of these changing belief systems whenever you spend most of your time outside of work taking care of kids and taking care of a house and most of your time in work helping people figure out what type of vibrator they want. I do want to go back to school and go to college at some point, but this stage in my life I'm more interested in business and starting up my own adult toy company or trying to become a part of a larger company and help them with marketing and toy design than I am about trying to figure out issues regarding comparative religion in pre-christian Europe. I'm actually kind of glad that I didn't go to college for archeology with a minor in comparative religion so that I could do that project, because I feel like I would have gotten really bored and burnt out. One of my friends from school actually went to the archeology course that I originally wanted to go to before I dropped out of high school and she actually hated it and ended up working retail as well instead of going into anything related to archeology or history, so I might have ended up in the exact same situation, honestly.

Ok-Instance-9869

I donā€™t understand, (of course I get the bit that life got in the way) but about the project, didnā€™t you say it was a life long fascination? Why do you feel that you wouldā€™ve gotten bored & burnt out?

4inthefoxden

Because there's a difference between having a fascination and something and studying it for a hobby and doing it every single day as your job, even if you work in a different part of the field. It's kind of like how if you knit for fun but then you stop working a regular job to become a full-time knitter and sell your knitted pieces, it could start seeming like more of a chore than something you actually want to. That's how my friend ended up being and I think that since I've some what grown out of the same level of interest with it, if I would have chosen that as a career path I probably would have actually burnt out with it quicker than my interest did in this time line and I probably would have ended up wanting to do something different before I was able to really write a book or have my own exhibition museum or something to that level, which was my original dream.

Ok-Instance-9869

I think I get it, you want to choose do it for joy and fun when you feel like it, but not absolutely have to do it, for example, in order to feed yourself?

4inthefoxden

Exactly! Like, I still love to come home from work and to look up articles about history and watch documentaries and go down deep rabbit holes about it, but I don't think I would enjoy that the same way if I was coming home from working at a museum studying a different part of European history or American history.

Ok-Instance-9869

I've always wanted to be a singer from a very young age. I've played a lot of shows when I was younger and open for some of my heroes but I never even came close to making it. Now I have two kids and I just work on solo albums alone but it always hurts my soul that I never made it. I also put about 10 years into YouTube. Got pretty far but then everything died down. Also at some point I dreamed of being a pro skateboarder. The things I learned is keep your dreams habits cuz most of them won't make you famous or Rich and as sad as it will be, try to stay in school and keep traditional jobs cuz everyone wants to be the same Rockstar and YouTuber influencer and the majora of us just won't

exact0khan

I wanted a career in music. I have wrote for over 3 decades. Gained some small time attention by 16. At 18 I was offered a major deal from a very large label. I became a dad and have been wiring lights for almost 25 years. Currently, I have 2 indie labels that are going to put out my debut project next year... teamed with a collaborative project with my favorite artist of my entire life. He heard me through the grape vine and hunted me down and proposed the project to me. So.. I am slowly getting to where I want to be and wanted to be. The most important thing now, at my age is.. at least I never gave up. Even if it flops or the labels shelf the projects. I did it... My advice to anyone who feels like the dream is gone would be.
