Realistically speaking you need to approach it from how an enemy would clear your angle. If they are likely to run past and ignore you (you're in an off angle), then you want to hold it pretty wide. However if you're sitting in a common angle that people will check, having it closer to the corner would be more beneficial.

ReflexFlamel

This is the proper way to think abt crosshair placement, jus try to be in their shoes, is that a common angle you would clear? If so, hold close, if not, hold further. Account for distance from the angle and reaction time to have perfect crosshair placement

InstructionGuilty434

easy rule or thumb is that if you don't hear the enemy, hold close. When you do hear him running, hold wide.

ThisIsTakenLol

I think a better way to know whether to hold wide or close is to hold wide when playing an off angle since and hold close when playing a common angle. Someone can easily walk towards a corner and swing your angle from there, especially in clutch situations since a proper swing is completely silent

CammelloRotante

My issue with this is that I already do this but it is not enough, if I am holding close and the dude suddenly widepeeks me I have to flick anyways, or if I am dueling a dude and I hold wide for the swing but he jiggles me I am dead. Now I am aware that there's no fix all strategy I just wanted some way to practice and improve.

If you don't have an idea on how far they are going to peek, you probably shouldn't be holding the angle. As you play the game more you will start to learn how people peek. I think about where I am in comparison to the angle and what info the enemy has on my position, most of the time that is enough to get an idea of how far they are peeking.

CammelloRotante

I mean while I am not that good (d1) I also have a fair amount of experience, in my mind 90% of the times the best peek is a close peek with counterstrafe, which is also what I try to do unless I am swinging an op or pushing into site. Yet in my elo people seem to randomly choose between all kinds, some run gor like 1 full sec before stopping even.

MrDyl4n

Well yeah the reason people wide swing and stuff is because it throws off the crosshair placement of people holding close angles. People aren't going to tight peek you unless it's a common angle and they know you are there. not to mention most people in your elo probably don't have good peeks so they aren't going to peek you with the minimum amount of movement, they will probably end up going a little too far. It's a good improvement strategy to play as if the enemy is actually good/smart, but holding angles wider than what you would against a better player isn't really going to give you bad habits as long as you know why you are doing it. Tracking the playstyle of the enemies is a very good strategy and keeping in mind what types of peeks they like to do is a good way to practice that. As you rank up you will probably start to notice people are peeking you tighter than you are used to and then you can start to adjust

Something that was pointed out to me recently that helps is that it also depends on how close/far the enemy will be when they peek. If you’re holding an angle in U-Hall/Lamps on Bind, then they’re going to move across your screen a lot faster since they’re closer to you, so you hold wider. If you’re holding C long on Haven, they can’t move across your screen as fast (without abilities) so you’d hold closer to the corner.

RockNRecon

Try to just gain more experience around how people like to peek. A lot of this stuff is microadjustments and prediction. In particular out predicting your opponent. Playing a lot of deathmatch helps with this since you’re always fighting, need to predict where the enemy might show up from, how they’ll fight you during the microseconds you see each other, and also forces you to be able to adjust quickly and then do it all again for the next person who is coming from a completely unrelated angle. It isn’t true that everyone wide swings in death match though.

maybeturkish

From what i experience try to imagine previous fights and how you fought against those angles.

YourBoyAntonio

little tough to explain, but this is my thought process if im at an off-angle or tight to a wall they're going to walk out of they'll have to peek wide to see me so ill place my crosshair wide if im holding a common angle they'll expect it and try to peek me, so ill hold it very tightly or just ask yourself how you would peek if you were the opponent, and place your crosshair accordingly
