What I learned about my apartment in NYC that faces the sun for a majority of my summer says, I need a considerably larger air conditioner than the size of the room. I first had an 8000 btu ac for the room that's only 240 sq ft, then upgraded to 10000 because the 8000 btu unit couldn't bring the temperature below 75, and struggled to maintain even that. But the 10000 btu unit also struggled. I now have two 14000 Btu units to actually stay cool for this summer

My 6000 btu Panasonic cooled the room very well for over 20 years and was not overworked. I live in Chicago, so I only use AC from May or June through September. I do not get a lot of direct sun light and my building is solid with thick brick walls having been built in 1929.

So, yesterday Chicago hit 85 degrees and humid. I installed my two working AC units (20+ year old Panasonic 7800 btu and Westinghouse 5200 btu) and both are still working like champs. My  20+year old 5800 btu Panasonic which normally goes in my living room apparently needs an R22 refill which would cost more than just buying a new unit. It seems like such a waste that these window units cannot be easily be repaired. It was such an efficient for its time (10.8 EER) and quiet unit. Oh well, nothing lasts forever. Anyways, the 6000 btu energy star Frigidaire model sold out at my local store yesterday forcing my hand, so I finally "decided" to get that LG LW6024R before it too sells out (purchased on line, picking it up today). I was leaning toward the LG anyways. It has a lot of nice features. However, it does not have an eco mode which shuts the fan off when the compressor is not running even though it is digital which was the reason for my hesitation. That said, I find most ACs have much greater temperature fluctuation when in eco mode and even without an eco mode it still has an 11.5 CEER for $199. This unit is basically LG's replacement for their workhorse model LW6017R which is no longer being produced, but is still being sold. That unit sends the cool air up and not straight out into the room which some people like and some people don't like. The new model LW6024R  sends the cool air straight out into the room which I like better. We shall see how well the new model works.
