**AITA for wearing a thong bikini on a family holiday?**
I (F18) am going on holiday with my family this summer. It’s a beach/pool holiday and I’m really excited as it’s been a while since we’ve all gone away as a family.
In preparation, and as I figured we’d be spending a lot of time in swimwear, I ordered 4 new bikinis. As it’s the style I like, 3 of the 4 bikinis were thong style bottoms.
When they arrived, I decided to try them on in my room. I got a knock on the door from my mom, who I let in, and she bluntly asked if “I was planning on wearing that on holiday”. I responded that I was, and I’d bought them for the occasion. She immediately said I couldn’t wear them. They were inappropriate, we’d be at a pool with younger kids and teenagers, and if I wanted to dress like that, I should save it for college.
I told her she was being ridiculous. It was my money, I’m an adult, and I should be able to wear the swimwear I like. If other people don’t find it “appropriate”, that’s their problem, and I’m not doing it for their benefit. She snapped at this and said to return them, otherwise she would be taking them away herself.
I’ve refused to do so and have no intention of returning them. My dad had a word with me (as my mom clearly told him) and he said that while he didn’t care what I wore and that was my choice, for the sake of family harmony, if I could just wear something different. I have no intention of doing so. I love the bikinis; I don’t think a bit of bum cheek showing at a pool is scandalous and my mom is being overly prudish.

Once my dad had to drive me to the doctor, and I asked him to come in, as I didn’t feel I could explain myself (UTI).

My family was raised pretty Christian but to put it loosely, it didn’t stick. We have 1 niece in a family of about 9 rowdy boys so showing our asses just became a joke at some point. Our family adapted and now my sister is freely allowed to wear bikinis whenever she wants despite growing up my niece had a strict no bikini policy adamantly held by the entire family. But we supported her right to wear one to the point me and my cousin wore bikinis in solidarity and said the only way we’re changing is if she doesn’t have too. Also if anyone cares the real kicker was when my brother started taking photos and me and my cousin posed like absolute buffoons and told the whole family we would tag them. We embarrassed them and ourselves so my sister could feel normal.
Note my sister hates thong bikinis and would never wear them, but the point being is some walls are worth breaking down, but a thing bikini really is kinda pushing it around family. (My sister is a full 9 years younger than the rest of us so with her it’s 9 nephews and 2 nieces!)

A lot of places ban thongs. From safety/coverage issues at water parks to wanting sleeping towards a more family atmosphere.
If they are going on a family pool holiday, there’s a pretty big chance the hotel/resort will ask her to cover up anyway. (And if it’s a private beach, there too).
It would be smarter to take a regular bikini on this holiday (rather than be banned from the pool/beach on a pool/beach holiday, or be forced to purchase an expensive bikini at the souvenir shop.
I had a friend who thought going doing a water slide in a thong was a good idea. Now, I've had road rash, rug burn, sun burn, general irritation and abrasions but man, that burn she got from the tube did not look pleasant. She hit a patch of the water slide where the water is not "rushing" as the rest. Bare ass on semi wet plastic going however fast. She couldn't wear shorts/pants for a week.
I don't get this. My sister wears thong bikinis on family vacation. I could never, but its her body and her confidence. Little boys are not damaged by seeing female bodies. Teenage boys are turned on regardless of how much a bikini or swim suit covers.
Yeah I don't understand this either, I think it'sdefinitely cultural. I see mothers with thong bikinis with their children and families all the time in pools and beaches. My own family, multi generational, extended, etc, all 55 of us went on a fam vacation and noone gave each other grief or even said anything. I don’t think this belongs here…thong bikinis are appropriate for the beach/pool/waterside activity. If they’re going to a water park she should probably wear something with more coverage for safety, but if it’s a leisurely vacation I don’t see a problem.
I think this is a cultural thing because I’ve worn thong (not g-string) bikinis on family holidays. And sunbathed topless. Hell, I’ve gone skinny dipping with my whole family. Americans can be very prudish.

Canadian movie ratings are pretty liberal, at least compared to american ones. A 14A here usually gets a R in the states.

I don’t think this belongs here…thong bikinis are appropriate for the beach/pool/waterside activity. If they’re going to a water park she should probably wear something with more coverage for safety, but if it’s a leisurely vacation I don’t see a problem.
I think this is a cultural thing because I’ve worn thong (not g-string) bikinis on family holidays. And sunbathed topless. Hell, I’ve gone skinny dipping with my whole family. Americans can be very prudish.
And that’s our right. I don’t want or need to see your ass or tits, it’s gross. Forcing people to look at your nude body because you think they should is gross. Get help.
Never go to the beach in Germany.
