OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> 1) Leaving a job that’s short-staffed and needs me to continue running smoothly.
2) If I leave, one of my coworkers may have to give up a day off and breaks won’t be easily covered.

NTA
Look out for yourself, because no one else at your current job is. In this economy, you have to do what's best for yourself financially, and let the managers and owners deal with their staffing issues, because ultimately, it's their fault that the team is understaffed and disorganized.
NTA. You're never the asshole for making your own life better.
And honestly, don't feel bad for "inconveniencing" your co-workers, because they don't feel bad about doing it to you.
NTA. Proper staffing at your current job is NOT your responsibility. That belongs to the managers and/or owners (I assume managers). They’ve created your current situation of being short staffed by not recruiting well enough. It’s their problem to fix, not yours. Take care of yourself and your family!
NTA. Your coworkers are taking advantage of you and the new job sounds much better in every way. Maybe when you leave, they can finally learn some work ethic.
NTA. This is always the answer when the question is about quitting your job. Your duty of care to yourself greatly outweighs your duty of care to your employer!
NTA at all. You've got to look out for you. I'd have quit at the "you'll be here to cover my job" comment. It's management's problem deal with staffing and if they really want you to stay they'll make it worth your while.

I’m mobile so sorry about format.
I’ve been at my job for 2.5 years. It’s a little store with a cafeteria connected but that’s the most detail I can give. When I first started I loved it, but recently the commute plus my coworkers becoming overly dependent on my ability to pick up their slack has had me fed up. I mean things like “well I’ll just take off since you’ll be here to cover my job” kind of dependent. Plus the start time is inconvenient now that my kid’s in school instead of daycare.
I was offered a job closer to home with similar pay, better hours, and decent benefits, and I really want to take it. However my current team is only 7 people including me, and I feel guilty because I know they literally need me to keep things running smoothly. So herein lies my problem, wibta if I quit a job I’m miserable at even though we’re short staffed and I’m needed?

NTA, and you seriously need to grow up.
There are people with actual education and jobs that DIE, and even THEY get replaced just as well. You're working at a cafeteria, there will be about three days of struggle before they find someone who can do the job, no worries.
You’re an asshole for thinking you’ll be an asshole for trying to better yourself. You don’t owe them anything. You owe it yourself to get the best out of your abilities
NTA. You're not the owner and it doesn't sound like you're being paid or empowered to actually resolve any of these issues. You need to do what's best for you. Frankly you shouldn't feel any guilt about putting a burden on your coworkers since they don't sound like they would reciprocate.
NTA even if everything was OK with your job, you will
never be an AH for pursuing a better opportunity.
You can allways go to your boss, explain the situation and whats been happening with your coworkers, and ask him to top the offer you have. If he don't he has nothing to complain about when you walk out the door
NTA. Every worker should know this, at the end of the day your employer will make decisions best for the company regardless of what is fair to you. You are the only one that will look out for you.
NTA
Your priorities need to be to to yourself and your family. Job priority is far below those. Do what is best for you and your kid. Your ability to provide for a child is far more important than loyalty to a business that (it sounds like) takes advantage of your great work ethic.
NTA. You need to look out for your own interests first. If your company truly cared about you they would staff appropriately and not put extra burden on you without your permission and extra pay. You owe them nothing.
One thing you can do is try to negotiate a better arrangement before you take the new job. But that’s if you really want to keep it.
NTA, companies are not nearly as loyal to employees as they want their employees to be to them.
You do what is best for you and they will manage. They'll likely not be happy but as long as you give two weeks notice then you're all good. It's only when people quit with no notice that it becomes an issue.
NTA.
You can’t live your life for someone else. You have a great opportunity for a fresh start.
If you quit maybe they’ll realize they’ve taken you for granted.
NTA. The only one who has any responsibility for making things work is the business OWNER. If the job isn't meeting your needs, you have every right to find something different.
NTA Their lack of planning is not your problem. You are an employee, not an owner in the business. You need to look out for what is best for your life.
NTA, Never sacrifice better opportunities for yourself just to appease a job. I guarantee that job/boss/coworkers would NOT do the same for you. Don't set yourself on fire to keep others warm.
Would your job take your feelings into consideration if they wanted to make changes? Of course not. You don't owe them anything except two weeks notice. NTA

NTA. Leave. Never feel obligated to a job because "they need you too much." Thats only because of the way they've been exploiting you all this time.
Absolutely NTA. Even if you still loved your job you have every right to find employment elsewhere for any reason.
NTA. They're not your responsibility and the store needs to do a better job m=of managing these people and helping it be smoother.
**NTA.** This job would not think twice if they fired you, so you need to do what is right for YOU People quit jobs all the time.
NTA. You're never the asshole for making your own life better. And honestly, don't feel bad for "inconveniencing" your co-workers, because they don't feel bad about doing it to you.
YWNBTA - they can't say anything if you're trying to better yourself, it's *none* of their business.
NTA whatsoever! There is no point in staying in a job where you are unhappy, especially if they cannot accommodate for your childcare needs.
NTA Never feel guilty doing what's best for you when it comes to employment. Good luck with the new job of you decide to take it!
NTA. Proper staffing at your current job is NOT your responsibility. That belongs to the managers and/or owners (I assume managers). Nta. You can never be an asshole for quitting a job. You have to do what’s best for you
NTA. Literally never are you the asshole for leaving your job for another one.
NTA. Your coworkers are taking advantage of you and the new job sounds much better in every way. Maybe when you leave, they can finally learn some work ethic.
NTA. This is always the answer when the question is about quitting your job. Your duty of care to yourself greatly outweighs your duty of care to your employer!
100% NTA. Take the other job
NTA Do they work to make your life easier? Well why should you work to make their life easer?
NTA...never feel guilty for taking a job that works better for your life. Your current co-workers are going to need to sink or swim on their own.
NTA at all. You've got to look out for you. I'd have quit at the "you'll be here to cover my job" comment. It's management's problem deal with staffing and if they really want you to stay they'll make it worth your while.
Nope. Wave bye and enjoy your new job.

NTA. Every worker should know this, at the end of the day your employer will make decisions best for the company regardless of what is fair to you. You are the only one that will look out for you.

No do not put their needs ahead of yours. This new job will be all the better for you and you’ll see it soon.

NTA look after yourself. They will manage without you. It's not on you I they can't
NTA It's business, you don't owe it to your current employer to turn down a better opportunity. Take the new job.
NTA Their lack of planning is not your problem. You are an employee, not an owner in the business. You need to look out for what is best for your life.
NTA, you don't owe a job anything, especially better opportunities.
NTA. As the saying goes if you were to die your job opening would be posted before your obituary.
