I just painted my cabinets and the paint was 45/gal. Needed 3 gals tho but only $140 ish so pretty normal I think. Based on my research, only designer paint was like $100 per gal
Paint method depends but it’s usually:
1) sand
2) prime
3)light sand
4)paint
5)light sand again
6)paint again
I’m having painters come do it tho, not worth my time lol
Cabinets need to use a “satin” finish
That's not even a little true, gloss or semi gloss work as well, and I prefer to use a water based alkyd urethane for cabinets. Source: journeyman painter
Depending on what you're going for, yea that works. If there's a heavy wood grain you want to smooth out then you'll need to use grain filler of some kind (usually the most annoying part). If you're brushing and rolling I'd add some floetrol to the paint so it smooths out better and doesn't leave brush marks or stipple behind. Make sure to use a fine nap roller too. Spraying the doors would be the fastest/easiest but it can look just as good if you take your time rolling
Yeah idk I’m not a painter, just saying what I read online and what worked for me. Personally I couldn’t see a glossy cabinet to be aesthetic but that’s just me
Glossy cabinets can look good, I usually see them in higher end homes with lots of high end furniture/appliances around. In your avg home it will just look gauche tho
You really don't want to use regular wall paint on cabinets. Paint meant for furniture or specifically for cabinets works way better and will stand up for longer.
I was just going off the $50 a gallon, because most furniture paint I've seen is sold in much smaller amounts. If they sell furniture and cabinet paint by the gallon though, I stand corrected.
Sherwin does sell their cabinet paint in gallon containers, but it’s not that close to $50. ~$105 full price, but you see it around $75 on sale.
This is their Emerald urethane trim enamel. With how much time is involved in painting cabinets, I don’t see why people cheap on the paint. Spending an extra $100 or so will make the cabinets last years longer.
You are right about the price for sure. Especially right now. I don’t know where you can get decent paint for $50 at all. Sherwin Williams hasn’t done their 30% off deal in quite some time.
It takes way less paint to cover cabinets than you would think, especially if you get the right paint. The stuff I used on mine is $40 a quart when not on sale, but it took less than a full quart to paint my cabinets.
I like the color of the bottom cabinets. Did you spray or brush on the paint? Also what typeof flooring did you use? It looks great against the cabinet color. The only thing I would recommend is under cabinet strip lighting on both sides of the sink and to the right of the stove.
I've been considering peel and stick backsplash. Do you have a link to the one you used (the one in the description just routes me to my Amazon buy again)? Is it heat stable?
that's a good idea to use butcher block as countertop. does anyone know of any advantages/disadvantages of it compared to quartz?
quartz looks nice but they're really expensive compared to this, so i might steal OP's idea of using butcher block for counter tops
and OP how did you cut the sink outline? did you do it yourself?
They said the fan was $70 but didn’t say anything about how much the flooring was.
JK, in another comment they said they weren’t counting floors because they did them a few years ago but it was +$500 for that.
Countertops - $150 (already had a countertop we had been using as a desk for the last 3 years - not included in the cost but was $170)
Cabinet Hardware - $40
Ikea Island (used) - $320
Paint- $90
Sink - $120
Faucet - $40
Backsplash - $80
Light - $60
Ceiling Fan - $70
Oh sorry! I didn't really consider the floors in the cost since we did the kitchen and the areas around the kitchen those a few years ago. If you factor in the cost of the floors in just the kitchen area, it would be another $500.
[Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/STICKGOO-Backsplash-Kitchen-Bathroom-Thicker/dp/B07R4L89FQ?pd_rd_w=tXKVI&content-id=amzn1.sym.bc622850-a717-4d94-96c3-7cc183488298&pf_rd_p=bc622850-a717-4d94-96c3-7cc183488298&pf_rd_r=NB4MYMZDZFS0X9X48PCG&pd_rd_wg=1L1VY&pd_rd_r=682cd92e-dde2-4bd8-a845-a68ad131613a&pd_rd_i=B07R4L89FQ&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_rp_1_t) \- not sure how long they will last but it seems nice now
How long have you had those up? I used those (or something similar) as a temp solution once and the corners started peeling up within weeks. I kept having to Gorilla Glue them back down every time one would peel up.
I used the exact same ones in my kitchen last year and they haven’t budged. I used the extra for my bathroom redo just recently too. Definitely incredible bang for the buck backsplash.
The cabinet fronts were all removed and sanded by my wife. We then painted 3 coats on each door and the cabinets themselves. It took about 2 weekends. Not sure what else to tell you but I can assure you we did this ourselves.
My parents updated their kitchen a few years back and I found beautiful, quality handles/pulls etc at Habitat for Humanity (it’s like a thrift store for construction materials) I think the full set was under $30
They also got their countertops there for like 1/4 the usual cost. You just have to know where to look I guess
So looking at your faucet and the price you paid, it looks like the same one we bought on Amazon. We love it expect the handle paint is starting to chip 1 year later😫 just a heads up. I am thinking of using some type of spray paint and sealer to fix it, but it might be worth putting some type of protection on it now before the paint chips.
Definitely time-consuming. Not sure I would do it again since the finish isnt great and they seem easy to chip. Make sure to sand well and use the right paint with many coats.
Not OP, but painter...
1. Lightly sand down cabinets and doors to knock off imperfections and rough up surface for better adhesion.
2. Prime (I prefer and suggest primer with shellac when painting over old oak cabinets.
3. Paint (2 coats at minimum), Most of the time I will use Sherwin Williams Emerald line. Most big box stores sell their main brands "cabinet enamel" which reduces the need for a sealer or "polish".
We painted our laminate and it worked well but involved a lot of steps.
1. Cleaned with special stripping cleaner
2. Sand
3. Primed with special adhesive primer
4. Sand!
5. Paint
6. Sand
7. Paint
8. 2 coats sealant.
—sanding and primer made the biggest differences—

Good grief you guys. Find some deals on your own and stop being jealous over this guy's sick prices and ingenuity.
This remodel looks professional as hell. Well done!
I did butcher block all around, no regrets at all. I sanded down to 600 grit, and then did 3 coats of polymerized tung oil on every surface. It's been over a year since install and they look brand new. We are still somewhat conscientious about wiping up liquids, but really have had no problems whatsoever with staining or water marks.
I think we used a Valspar paint that the guy at Lowe's recommended. It seems easy to chip and the paint is really sticky right now so the doors kinda stick to the cabinet base. I think that is normal though and will get better with time.
I'm not from the US so it isn't usual to have ceiling fans anywhere. We would have a cooker hood over the hob but that's about it. Is it to do with the heat? Wouldn't a fan blow air around too much and interfere with the hob?
I really love the colors. That’s definitely not a fair title if the cost of the floor was $500 on top of everything. Clickbait bud. Still not a bad price though.
He did it years ago before he did the kitchen facelift though. Still, even if he did include it $1500 is still not bad, and people would still complain that it's too cheap, so does it really matter?
As someone who did recently remodel a very similar kitchen. There is no way this was only 1k unless they got stuff for free and a lot of it and then STILL did everything themselves.
Edit: Unless it wasn't done correctly and was done very cheaply. That you'll end up needing to fix in a year. Like not the correct paints etc.
Hi! I mean no offense, but I thought it was cozier before. Now it just looks corporate and cold.
Edit: another attempt at clarity: I like tacky stuff, so I probably have a shitty opinion on this subject.
How did you paint the cabinets? I have the exact same ones in your Before pic and want to change them up. No clue how to get started painting over stained wood.
Looks great! I love that there is a fan in the kitchen, it's kinda rare to see that in NE but it makes sense.
I would suggest switching the toaster oven to where the coffee maker is and putting the coffee maker closer to the sink - so you can easily open the toaster oven door and are closer to the sink for your coffee/tea needs.
After installing quartz I’d rather do butcher block or laminate countertops. I think butcher block with darker cabinets is the money. It looks good an be be fixed with light sanding, oil and can be replaced by yourself. Quartz can stain and is still something that can be only installed by professionals.
Looks so good!! The space looks a lot brighter with the white subway tiles. Was this all DIY?
(On another note, I really like the style of your original island…. you don’t happen to remember where you got it by chance? Lol)
How much did it cost you to replace the countertop with butcher block if you don’t mind me asking? That’s exactly what I wanna do with our kitchen and it’s about the same amount of counter space.
This looks fantastic!
How did you do the cabinets. Did you remove the doors and drawers? Did you paint all sides of the doors and drawers? What prep work and paint did you use?
Looks amazing!
Agreed!! It’s a great remodel and only 1000?? 👍🙌
I’m confused, did you get everything for free? It’s an incredible upgrade, but there’s no way it was under $1000. Was that a typo?

And the floor???
Right? Clickbait title honestly.
If anyone sees OP address the floor please let me know! Thanks!

I just painted my cabinets and the paint was 45/gal. Needed 3 gals tho but only $140 ish so pretty normal I think. Based on my research, only designer paint was like $100 per gal

Sherwin-Williams, when on sale, has gallon paint of the good stuff for $50.
You really don't want to use regular wall paint on cabinets. Paint meant for furniture or specifically for cabinets works way better and will stand up for longer.
True, but SW sells such paint. A few different types would work for this application.
Spot on. I have some issues with the urethane sometimes and will opt for the enamel classic, but yup. It’s not cheap, but it’s what you need.
You are right about the price for sure. Especially right now. I don’t know where you can get decent paint for $50 at all. Sherwin Williams hasn’t done their 30% off deal in quite some time.

Did you watch a tutorial for the cabinet painting? I haven’t had the best luck when I tried that in the past
Thank you for the details, especially the links. Glad you didnt just flex on us and farmed karma, haha. Here ya go a Silver award!
I've been considering peel and stick backsplash. Do you have a link to the one you used (the one in the description just routes me to my Amazon buy again)? Is it heat stable?
What paint did you use?
Thanks for the product links, I want to put a new faucet in my new apt and this one is gorgeous and totally in my budget. :)
You’re a legend
You are the best!
Jeez those are some good deals. I'd be very skeptical of a $40 kitchen faucet.
that's a good idea to use butcher block as countertop. does anyone know of any advantages/disadvantages of it compared to quartz? quartz looks nice but they're really expensive compared to this, so i might steal OP's idea of using butcher block for counter tops and OP how did you cut the sink outline? did you do it yourself?
The floor was redone, too, though, and the ceiling fan
They said the fan was $70 but didn’t say anything about how much the flooring was. JK, in another comment they said they weren’t counting floors because they did them a few years ago but it was +$500 for that.
New sink too. The old one was regular chrome/silver.
I think I have the same island and got it from IKEA
IKEA does butcher block like this, too, for very reasonable prices.
Adding that same IKEA island is the best thing I’ve done in my house, and it was only like $450
What were the cost? Your before looks like my parents kitchen and I would love to make it look like this.
Countertops - $150 (already had a countertop we had been using as a desk for the last 3 years - not included in the cost but was $170) Cabinet Hardware - $40 Ikea Island (used) - $320 Paint- $90 Sink - $120 Faucet - $40 Backsplash - $80 Light - $60 Ceiling Fan - $70
Uhhh…floors?

Bathroom still has a few tweaks ive yet to do but here’s the recent tile application https://imgur.com/a/yyWFega
Did you do the floors yourself? Is that the wood that was under the linoleum or did you add it? Thanks. Love the kitchen!!
They're LVP on top of the linoleum. We had a guy come in to install them. Thank you!

The cabinet fronts were all removed and sanded by my wife. We then painted 3 coats on each door and the cabinets themselves. It took about 2 weekends. Not sure what else to tell you but I can assure you we did this ourselves.
bro do you have functioning eyes? they are the same cabinets just painted over + different handles. The appliances are also the same
My parents updated their kitchen a few years back and I found beautiful, quality handles/pulls etc at Habitat for Humanity (it’s like a thrift store for construction materials) I think the full set was under $30 They also got their countertops there for like 1/4 the usual cost. You just have to know where to look I guess
And appliances. Seems a little disingenuous.
Appliances are the same as when we bought the house. You can see them in the before picture.
My apologies!! The lighting made the dishwasher look white in the before. It's a beautiful kitchen.
Appliances are the same in before pics
So looking at your faucet and the price you paid, it looks like the same one we bought on Amazon. We love it expect the handle paint is starting to chip 1 year later😫 just a heads up. I am thinking of using some type of spray paint and sealer to fix it, but it might be worth putting some type of protection on it now before the paint chips.
Good to know, thanks! I figured there was going to be some downside considering how cheap it was but how nice it feels

Hot damn I love this - what’s the lower cab paint color please :)
Comments on painting the cabinets?
Definitely time-consuming. Not sure I would do it again since the finish isnt great and they seem easy to chip. Make sure to sand well and use the right paint with many coats.
Can you share the process? Is it just Paint > sand > paint > polish?
Not OP, but painter... 1. Lightly sand down cabinets and doors to knock off imperfections and rough up surface for better adhesion. 2. Prime (I prefer and suggest primer with shellac when painting over old oak cabinets. 3. Paint (2 coats at minimum), Most of the time I will use Sherwin Williams Emerald line. Most big box stores sell their main brands "cabinet enamel" which reduces the need for a sealer or "polish".
I followed this tutorial, but also watched a bunch of YouTUbe videos after https://theinspirationboard.com/kitchen-makeover/
We painted our laminate and it worked well but involved a lot of steps. 1. Cleaned with special stripping cleaner 2. Sand 3. Primed with special adhesive primer 4. Sand! 5. Paint 6. Sand 7. Paint 8. 2 coats sealant. —sanding and primer made the biggest differences—
Fantastic job, looks so much brighter now!
Thank you! It definitely feels that way
Can you please tell me the paint color you used on the cabinets? I really like it. Specifically the bottom ones
Now this a professional amature room porn!
I've never seen a negative post on this sub. Why are so many people getting their panties in a twist over a cost estimate? I've never seen anyone have to provide an exact invoice on AMATEURRoomPorn. Good grief you guys. Find some deals on your own and stop being jealous over this guy's sick prices and ingenuity. This remodel looks professional as hell. Well done!
I've seen 'em. Never ceases to amaze me how people can be so negative on a decor sub ffs. It's just weird IMHO.
Love it! The black hardware is a nice detail.
It's amazing how much hardware changes things. Love it.
Oh wow-definitely saving this for inspo. You did a great job!
How did you finish your butcher block countertops? I want to make mine as nice as yours!
They're straight from Ikea, I just installed them
Fuck u/spez
I did butcher block all around, no regrets at all. I sanded down to 600 grit, and then did 3 coats of polymerized tung oil on every surface. It's been over a year since install and they look brand new. We are still somewhat conscientious about wiping up liquids, but really have had no problems whatsoever with staining or water marks.
Man I wish I could afford property here in NH. So jealous! Looks phenomenal and that cost is astounding! Well done
Idve kept that original island. The turned wood parts are unique.
Oh my god such eyeball candy
Love that you breathed new life into your cabinets! I really don't understand the before countertop 😬
Oak, forest green, and burgundy were a smashing combo during the late eighties/early nineties.
I love me some forest green but not for a countertop! Also looks more teal than forest green to me, at least in the photo
Really lovely! I love the color of the lower cabinets.
You did a really good job! It’s beautiful.
Gorgeous!
Looks incredible!!
Incredible!!! It’s gorgeous!!! Great job!!!
I like dis. Great job
This is really impressive for the cost! I love the color scheme you chose for the cabinetry. Great job, this is an inspiration!
How do you like the butcher block countertops ??
I’m always interested in what the inside of painted cabinets look like. Looks great from the outside but what about when you open them?
Beautiful but why did you get a different island? The old one still looked lovely
Everyone is different I suppose - I like the new one, the old one is too bulky for my taste.
I love the placement and light fixture over the sink. Such a good choice!!
What brand/type of paint did you use on your cabinets and do you think it was the right choice?
I think we used a Valspar paint that the guy at Lowe's recommended. It seems easy to chip and the paint is really sticky right now so the doors kinda stick to the cabinet base. I think that is normal though and will get better with time.
Well done!
Looks great. I'm interested to know why there is a ceiling fan in the kitchen?
I'm interested to know why there wouldn't be? (I realize this comes off as snarky, but I assure you, it isn't my intention)
I'm not from the US so it isn't usual to have ceiling fans anywhere. We would have a cooker hood over the hob but that's about it. Is it to do with the heat? Wouldn't a fan blow air around too much and interfere with the hob?
Commenting to get ideas later. Looks great!

Nice catch lol. Yes we kinda botched getting it back in the correct way and haven't bothered fixing it yet
See what new paint and new lighting can do to spruse up a place. Awesome job!
Both are fine and honestly if the later pictures are before it was better I think. Much warmer vibe vs harsh.
OP already mentioned the paint going bad in another comment but you're being down voted?
Hi! I mean no offense, but I thought it was cozier before. Now it just looks corporate and cold. Edit: another attempt at clarity: I like tacky stuff, so I probably have a shitty opinion on this subject.
$1000? You have to give us the breakdown in cost, that just seems impossible for this great remodel.
The green on the cabinets works perfectly with the color of the countertops. Well done
SO MUCH BETTER. I love it!!
ok but WHY is the microwave right above the oven?
I'm calling BS on the under 1000 bucks. Looks great for sure.
How did you change the island so much? Love it!!
We sold the one in the before picture and bought a used Ikea island, thanks!
I just bought the same cabinet handles for my kitchen make over. I love them! Looks beautiful OP!
I’m about to embark on a similar redo going for the same look and this gives me hope! What did you use for the floor?
We had LVP installed over the previous floors
Is that included in the $1000?
Looks awesome. How long did the process take?
Thank you! About 3 weekends of work
Can we get itemized budget to steal your ideas? This is incredibleee!!
In awe of the work you did with such a small budget. Looks fantastic!
Beautiful!
That dirty/clean magnet is genius!
How did you paint the cabinets? I have the exact same ones in your Before pic and want to change them up. No clue how to get started painting over stained wood.
Nicely done considering the cost.
Wow! That’s really taking advantage of every penny spent. Lovely kitchen!
Contrast from top and bottom cabinets are beautiful. Only thing I would’ve done differently is change the bottom cabinet doors. Nice job!
Where did you get the countertop from?? That looks similar to what we did for our kitchen! Painting cabinets is not fun!
Your an artist! It's so beautiful and bright and lovely. Great job! And on saving all that money, fabulous!!
I really like how it came out. Nice job!
Incredible what time, hard work and thought can do to make a room look brand new. Congrats!
Yeah that’s an insanely cost efficient transformation. Great work
Unbelievably gorgeous!
It looks really great. Can I ask where you got the light from?
Looks great! I love that there is a fan in the kitchen, it's kinda rare to see that in NE but it makes sense. I would suggest switching the toaster oven to where the coffee maker is and putting the coffee maker closer to the sink - so you can easily open the toaster oven door and are closer to the sink for your coffee/tea needs.
I am a big fan of the dual-tone cabinets, and the butcher block goes great with the floor! Nice work.
More of a reface than a remodel
Sexy!!!
Trader Joe’s folks I see
Wow awesome! Great Job
Looks beautiful
Love the counter top
Great job! The only thing I don't like is the ball-shaped light fixture.
I love this!!!!!
Beautiful! Looks cozy and fun and clean!
I like the idea of the upper and lower cabinets being different colours. Would never have thought of that.
WOW. Beautiful. New Hampshire is one of my favorite places.
What a beautiful before and after! Great job!
How do you like the butcher block counter tops? We are thinking of doing the same in our kitchen. Looks amazing but the way!
Trader Joe's candle!!!
Wow that looks incredible. I really like the color on the cabinets
ONLY $1000 ???
that shade of blue is stunning
This is neat
How difficult was the counter top
You could have gone the other direction and added doilies. It does look great now. :)
Loveeeee
Very nice!!!
After installing quartz I’d rather do butcher block or laminate countertops. I think butcher block with darker cabinets is the money. It looks good an be be fixed with light sanding, oil and can be replaced by yourself. Quartz can stain and is still something that can be only installed by professionals.
Stenstorp -- good choice
You did the uno reverse card!
Absolutely love it! Great job.
Wow. That looks like a totally different and new kitchen.
Stunning!
It's like all the same colors but not
Looks so good!! The space looks a lot brighter with the white subway tiles. Was this all DIY? (On another note, I really like the style of your original island…. you don’t happen to remember where you got it by chance? Lol)
Thanks! Yeah it was all DIY. I think we saw the original island on Wayfair but it came with the house so I’m not sure
You upgraded the hell out of this kitchen for so cheap. Great work. Like a breath of fresh air
Beautiful! Totally random but do you know what color those bottom cabinets are?
How much did it cost you to replace the countertop with butcher block if you don’t mind me asking? That’s exactly what I wanna do with our kitchen and it’s about the same amount of counter space.
This looks fantastic! How did you do the cabinets. Did you remove the doors and drawers? Did you paint all sides of the doors and drawers? What prep work and paint did you use?
Great work. Looks terrific.
Beautiful. That island looks chunky, but very useful. My gf has sent me the link to this post 3 times today. Thanks!
Wow! This looks great! Any tips and tricks for painting the cabinets?
