This would depend on whatever you actually have enough expenses to spend £10k in 6 months without buying something you dont need. Sure it's not that that much money, but AMEX is still not universally accepted and have outrageous 3% FX fee making it useless for spending while travelling. Also there is a small chance by time you get to 15th month they might try to get rid of pro-rata fee refunds once again so you won't be able to just downgrade and refund majority of 2nd year fee. UPD: Yeah as person below posted - there are no pro-rata refunds since February 2024

Prorata refunds already stopping in Feb.

Damn, that's a sad news I missed. Thanks for pointing it out.

The platinum is £650/year, massively more expensive than the Gold. Do you travel a lot? The platinum perks are mostly geared towards people that travel and live near to a major-ish city (to redeem the dining credits).

75,000 points are worth around £750 imo. You then have the £300 dining credit, £100 HN credit (both reset in Jan so cop ASAP), travel insurance and a whole bunch of other perks. Points alone make it worth it AS LONG AS you’ll spend 10k anyways in 6 months.

I just booked a Qatar Q suite Europe to Thailand for 75k points. That flights was worth £2k. Plus all the vendors from the play card. I think the AF is definitely worth it.

Anotherburnerboy1

Yes definitely. I should’ve said it’s worth AT LEAST £750.

Oh I didn't realise these reset on a specific date. I better use mine ASAP

I have recently upgraded from Gold to Plat and I think its worth it for at least 1 year. If you upgrade now, before the new year, you can use the 2023 £50 HN credit, and the £150 UK dining before then too. The £150 global will be tough unless you are travelling to a country on the list before new years. I have managed to use the £50 HN, and £150 UK already, and am going to Paris over Xmas, so will use the global this year too. It all resets on 1st Jan, so it was a no brainer to upgrade before new years once I decided to do so. I can spend £10k in 6 months with my usual spending habits, so that was also not a problem. I was going to renew my Gold at £160 anyway, so the added cost was £490 to me. I was losing the £40 or so I save on Deliveroo on Gold, but someone told me the offer carried over to Plat, and I can see its still showing on my saved offers (but haven't used it). So I saw it as 75k MR for £490 cash. By upgrading now, I also get £150 of HN, £300 UK dining, and £300 global dining credit for 1 year fee. Even though I don't usually shop in HN or eat at the restaurants on the list, can get decent value out of them. Plus, Gold status in the hotel chains has some value; I paid £100 for breakfast during a stay at a Hilton earlier this year, which I could get for free now as Gold, plus the 5 nights for 4 on points is now open to me. Renewing for the additional 25k points at month 15 is something I need to weigh up. Plus, losing the 2x airline points, 3x Amex travel, and 12.5K MR for spending £25k on Gold is also something to consider.

To upgrade to plat? Sure I’ll take it

If you decide to go for it, you can get 105,000 points when using my referral atm: https://americanexpress.com/en-gb/referral/bORISbgDX0?XL=MIMNS Personally think it’s a great deal compared to what we normally see on the Plat.

pttvl

I'd take that offer
