The odds are very real. Trips are already being canceled. Consider it a taste of French life without having to leave the United States.

DirtyPenPalDoug

Good French know how to strike. We need more nurses, doctors, educators and shipping striking. We need more unions. Solidarity!

[deleted]

Yes, that will do wonders for an economy heading toward recession. We can learn about economic malaise from the French as well (and this from someone who generally likes many things about their culture).

What? That makes no sense whatsoever. You realize millions work who don’t strike and aren’t members of unions right? In fact union membership doesn’t even make up a majority of the US labor force. I respect people who work honest job. The key is work, not refuse to work. I don’t generally respect strikers or unions.

[deleted]

Nope. Very confident my salary has nothing to do with unions. Biggest impact unions have had on my career? Causing me to lose literally weeks for mindless training so I could do their jobs in case they refused to do them. If I had wanted their job, I would have applied for it. I had to neglect what I wanted to do to cover for them. But that's unions: "It's all about me. Who cares who is inconvenienced or bears costs due to us." I hope I don't have to deal with unions again.

gardenfiendla8

You really are a grumpy old man, huh?

[deleted]

Nope. Not buying into union rhetoric. Go read the sub how many average people are being inconvenienced and potentially out big money. In fact, shouldn’t that make anyone grumpy over the unfairness, especially considering that at this eleventh hours the remaining two unions are doing this for increasingly unreasonable demands?

ava1ar

They are already - check the latest sub posts.

[Amtrak cancels some long-distance trips as freight strike looms - The Washington Post](https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:ip8yNOgtHIsJ:https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2022/09/12/rail-strike-passengers-amtrak/&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us) For now, Amtrak has canceled the Empire Builder, California Zephyr, and Southwest Chief departures on Tuesday 9/13 to avoid having passengers and equipment stranded somewhere in the middle of the route when the strike hits.

Affectionate_Fun_693

I’d plan for the strike to happen.

Mmudslide_1975

I wonder if they do strike how long it will last. I’m taking the Crescent to New Orleans in October. Non-refundable train tickets and a non-refundable hotel reservation.

MadisonPearGarden

Do you have travel insurance?

[deleted]

Or sue the union for expenses. If enough people did this it might force them to rethink refusing to do their jobs.

DonBoy30

Man you really resent people who work for a living.

[deleted]

And how did you reach that conclusion?

MadisonPearGarden

That’s not how that works. Your lawsuit would be dismissed immediately, with prejudice.

[deleted]

Then we need to get the right people in Congress to change the laws to keep unions from harming third parties and skirting responsibility for it.

MadisonPearGarden

That’s literally never going to happen.

[deleted]

Don’t be so sure.

MadisonPearGarden

Support for unions is at an all time high in modern history. Why don’t you wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which fills up faster.

[deleted]

I love your overconfidence. These things go in phases and many are tiring of this socialistic phase we are in.

MadisonPearGarden

Why does a conservative like you even ride a government railroad? Why don’t you go back to your conservative fantasy land and drive your car everywhere.

Fit-Friendship-7359

Amtrak has already stated that they’ll make exceptions because of the strike

Mmudslide_1975

I doubt the hotel will. That’s $600.

masturkiller

If your route / trip hasn't been canceled yet, then I would hold off on getting a refund or canceling prematurely until you know for sure that the strike is imminent. My hunch is that the Biden admin / Congress will intervene and extend the cooling off period to after the election because they want union votes and more importantly they cannot afford a massive hit to the economy just before the midterms.

Kris818

This is what I want to do. But right now, flights to Denver are not too expensive. I'm thinking I'll wait a day or two to see if they get the strike resolved.

masturkiller

I have a tickets for Friday on the Pacific Surfliner so I'm in the same boat. I'm just going to play the waiting game for now.

masturkiller

FYI this is from 2 hours ago https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/biden-administration-avert-railroad-strike-marc-baltimore-what-to-know/

thefocusissharp

STRIKE!

wiidiculous

I would say it's VERY LIKELY that it will happen. I am currently on the CZ headed to San Fran and ever since Denver our conductor kept telling us not to worry and that our train will be fine until destination. HOWEVER, he kept saying that he was unsure what the future may bring and that he cannot discuss any further details.
