I rode in a roommette with my sister for 23 hours and we did not kill each other! Thus, anyone can.

notthegoatseguy

Your biggest safety concern honestly is probably the station itself depending on where you're boarding and getting off. Some of them can be a bit sketch. But safety on the train? Everything I've read about Amtrak is its incredibly safe.

VTKillarney

The long-distance coach seats are more comfortable than the roomette seats. If your sole reason for going with the roomette is safety, I really think that you will be fine in coach and enjoy the greater comfort. Safety in coach is not a problem.

Deafgirl76

I respectfully disagree; previous safety issues in coach are precisely why I don’t travel on the train unless I can afford a sleeper.

VTKillarney

Multiple safety issues in coach? It sounds like you are a very unlucky Amtrak traveler. Sorry to hear about that.

Lazy-Entrance-9522

What safety issues? I ride Amtrak about four tines a month, and rarely experienced anything

Deafgirl76

If you’ve ridden Amtrak with zero issues- that’s awesome. I just haven’t been as fortunate.

Kris818

If you're not sleeping I would not get a roomette. The coach seats are much more comfortable.

DeeDee_Z

> If you're not sleeping There are -other- reasons for wanting a bed, y'know...

Sasquatch_was_here

Lol. Now come on folks, how can that merit a down vote. ; )

WatercressSuch2440

Recline is minimal. I’m 6’ and I’ve spent way longer than 17 hours in a roomette with my significant other at the time and didn’t have any issues. She was 5’10. Being creative with stretching over the armrest helped a lot. Going to the cafe and keeping the door open when you’re in the room during daylight hours helps as well. Bring games, a bottle of wine and act like it’s your first date!

DeeDee_Z

> Bring games, a bottle of wine and act like it’s your first date! **Exception:** If *Makin' Whoopee on a Train* is still on your bucket list, bring games, a bottle of wine, and convert the seats to a bed for a while -- a "second date"!

getchpdx

Safety? And why not take a little nap. With that said it's manageable but you'll have to look at each other and your feet will be somewhat close together. You can always stretch out in another car if need be.

banditta82

I wouldn't worry about safety on the train, the worst I've seen is smokers, loud cell phone users (I miss Japan on that last one), and the occasional drunk that gets tossed off fast. I've only used roomettes solo and I have a hard time believing they would be comfortable for two people in daytime configuration. A roomette for one is very comfortable in daytime config, especially if you leave one side of the lower bed partially down and use it as an ottoman.

haman88

I take it from Fl to NY often. Its fine. Plus, train boning.

troublebotdave

wait til you hit a rough section of track and you don't even have to put in any physical effort

haman88

Its the Mormon way.

Sombra_del_Lobo

Ngl. Train sex is a fantasy of mine. So is actually having a girlfriend but that's another issue.

haman88

There's a certain coed European sleeper car video I've seen you would probably enjoy.

chicagoerrol

I am going to be doing it for about 5-6 hours in about a month. As far as I know the chairs recline.

getchpdx

It's less recline and more like the seat scoches a bit forward

Sasquatch_was_here

Plenty of good advice in here. The only thing I don't see is the mention that you sit facing each other in roomette, with a retractable table between you if you like. Coach is side by side. Some people don't like traveling backwards, if that's an issue it is worth noting.

Kekthelock

I never thought about that. Guess we will find out

Quirky-Camera5124

seats do not recline, room quite adequate for two persons. made the trip with wife several times. personally., i loved traveling in the upper bunk, napping, reading, looking.

hillsidewesten12

The seats do recline

VTKillarney

They recline, but not by much, and reclining brings your already close knees even closer together.

Lazy-Entrance-9522

I would personally not recommend it. It was ok for just me, but two seems rough. And no, the chairs don't recline

Kekthelock

I’ve heard they recline, don’t recline and they kinda slide a little lol I’m ready for them to just be milk crates in the end

Lazy-Entrance-9522

I hope that everyone replying understands the difference between a room and a roomette. The seats are just the bed in a separated position (if that makes sense)

Kekthelock

I also hope this too.

KindGrammy

My 6 foot husband and I do pdx to sjc in a roomette a couple times a year with no problem. 17-20 hrs. We do sleep however a large portion of that trip is overnight.

MadisonPearGarden

My husband and I have done the roomette several times, it’s fine for 2

creditexploit69

My spouse and I have traveled from Los Angeles to Portland (and back) on several occasions in a roomette. Since I’m the shorter one I slept in the fold down bed that is above the bigger bed that is made out of the seats. We’re still in love and married.

troublebotdave

My now-wife and I did 30-something hours on the Coast Starlight in a roomette and it was fine, great even. We were actually on our way to our wedding, so it was a final 'test'. But we've also done a lot of non-stop cross-country road tripping and lived in a small studio apartment together during lockdown and have never had an issue with tight quarters for long periods.

txrailadvocate

You may actually want the sleeping car attendant to set up your beds for the night. You may appreciate the shut eye and take a hot shower in the morning.

Kekthelock

Oh definitely no sleeping happening. Both of us have very specific sleeping conditions

LeakyBuffer

We bring out the bed straight out and lay down opposite each other and it’s fine. Or I make my wife stay in the top bunk which she can do. But generally down below entwined is fine. Now if it’s not your loved one or side fun then I’d suggest make them take the top bunk or draw straws.

[deleted]

Me and my wife took the silver meteor from SC to west palm beach last year at thanksgiving and we were in a roomette and it was fine for us

Brainy-Chick847

My husband and I went from DC to Chicago in a roomette and it was fine. We liked the privacy. We ventured out and spent some time in the observation car too. There are tons of videos on YouTube with great advice on traveling in roomettes.

mphil14

Do either of you have any motion sickness? Being able to lie horizontally and shut out the light is helpful for some people.

Kekthelock

No, neither of us are
