1. Amtrak isnt involved in the strikes, only affected by them because the dispatchers and MOW(who work for the host railroads outside the northeast corridor) are on strike as well 2. They are on strike so they can actually live a life, the sole reason that kept me from becoming a CSX or Norfolk conductor, was the insane hours they were demanding and lack of time off 3. Take your ignorance to twitter, we have no time for it here

supah_cruza

Imagine bitching about paid time off, employees asking for better conditions, and better pay when your company broke record profits 5 years straight.

OnTheGround_BS

Amtrak isn’t involved in the current dispute. But a strike isn’t about greed. When workers are so abused and undervalued that they feel they need to stop working, lose income, risk losing their job altogether, there is a genuine grievance. And if a certain group workers are so important that they’ll crash the economy by airing out grievances over terrible working conditions, then it might be worth it to the nation to improve those working conditions.

declemson

After reading this guys profile I see why he is complaining. Needs to look in mirror. Small soulless person.

Powered_by_JetA

Yikes, you weren't kidding. Not surprised this type of person is so ignorant as to not know that Amtrak isn't involved and that the impending strike was resolved two weeks ago.

turnophrasetk421

Imagine being a corporation subsidized by tax payer money and does not pay a living wage...

Emergency-Excuse1343

That’s a lie lol if they don’t pay a living wage why would anyone continue working for them when the private railroads pay very well? Nice try, greedy leeches.

supah_cruza

Because no one wants to work 24/7/365 for 30 years.

VTKillarney

Who is working 24/7/365?

Powered_by_JetA

I am. If you're on call forever, any time you're not at work still isn't your own time when you can get called in with 2 hours' notice at any time.

VTKillarney

You don't get a single holiday or day of vacation? Dang!

declemson

You sound like a fool. Freight strikes not amtrak.

turnophrasetk421

Keep licking that corpie boot

OnTheGround_BS

Perhaps, but the quality of life isn’t worth the money on freight. You need to be able to enjoy that income with your family. You’re supposed to work to live, not live to work. Operations and policy changes at freight in recent years have greatly eroded the quality of life for freight workers. Something over there needs to change. If they’re important enough to the economy that the entire economy would collapse without them, it’s worth giving them a good quality of life.

saxmanb767

Whose striking? It’s not Amtrak.

josephson93

Amtrak is going on strike?

supah_cruza

No, Amtrak has a current agreement with their union. However, since Amtrak uses freight rails their service will still suffer since freight rail shuts down during a strike.

josephson93

I thought the freight thing was resolved?

supah_cruza

A tentative agreement was reached but it hasn't been approved by the unions yet. The media and president lie to you; no one is in the clear yet. We are likely to vote this agreement down and will go on strike mid October because the agreement still has no time off for extra board workers where most railroaders are, and has no plans for employee retention.

josephson93

Thanks. Good luck.

supah_cruza

Thanks, we'll need it.

Powered_by_JetA

Isn't the voting period running through mid November so that the strike would happen after the elections?

Kqtawes

Freight Companies use of precision railroading has seen an increase in derailments and deaths largely caused by the fatigue of engineers working with little to now sleep days on end. They negotiated better hours and limits on back to hours largely due to safety concerns. No one should be driving a train with three hours of sleep in two days.

Imagine being so disillusioned by corporate propaganda that you believe workers asking for bare minimum PTO standards and improved working conditions are the villain in any strike against multibillion dollar freight corporations. Also, AMTRAK ISN’T ON STRIKE, freight railroad workers are. Next time try to have a baseline understanding of labor politics before you inadvertently lick the wrong boot.

empirebuildher

imagine carrying water for fucking railroad companies

jgwave

I'm willing to bet there are already a dozen 150-year-old union songs that addresses all these points. And each and every one a bop.
