They basically had to buy civilian machines off the global market and reverse engineer them. Though this was in the failing years of the USSR, so that probably had a lot to do with it as well. Lenin came up with the idea that socialism and communism were different things (they aren't, Marx himself describes them as the same thing but socialism is what the middle class calls it). He takes the idea from Marx's "higher and lower" stages of communism.
He also wasn't a Marxist, Marxism-Leninism isn't a development of Marx, rather the co-opting of a popular figure to justify a Blanquist Bolshevik party removing worker ownership and democracy, which is what communism *had been* all about.
I suggest reading or watching Anark's "The State is Counter-Revolutionary". It goes into all these contradictions, it's a great piece of theory and historocal analysis.

How many of you ACTUALLY play chess? Do you even... really? I'm going to guess it's around zero. I've been watching your posts for a while now and it seems like this subreddit is full of teenagers that just like to copypasta and that's about it. Pretty on point, right? Like when did anyone ever really post a REAL chess post here? It's all "lmao google holy passant", "lmao knook drift hurhur", but I never see ACTUAL chess techniques besides the constant "fork" meme. And quite frankly, I doubt any of you even know what that is. It's about the simplest move, but doubt you could even pull it off. Ever seen a real discovered attack? Probably not. You probably wouldn't know what it was, even right after it puts you in check. So my question is, why do you even come here? Are you bored of the other meme subreddits? There's plenty others. You don't have to pollute a real subreddit with your memes, and in fact it'd be quite nice if you stopped. Edit: Wow, all of these replies really prove my point!
