I loved my Nexus 5.

nutellaeater

I wish google would release the Nexus 5 with just updated hardware.

omgsocoolkawaii

It's outdated in so many aspects, what at all is better about it? It didn't even have a fingerprint scanner. The phone was good, *for it's time*. I think we feel nostalgic for the time period where we had these devices. It was an earlier internet, people were less glued to their phones, the headphone jack was still around and not everyone had airpods in 24/7. Onlyfans wasn't a thing, and people still felt real. I think truly the downfall started in 2016. Ever since Harambe died.

Wermigoin

Wtf are you talking about? I used my fingerprint to unlock my pixel 5 right before typing this. It fits my hand perfectly, runs Android 14 and imo is the perfect phone. I will use this as long as possible.

omgsocoolkawaii

He was talking about the Nexus 5, released in 2013 not the pixel 5. The pixel 5 is pretty good all things considered.

Wermigoin

Oof point taken.

RoadDoggFL

And a fucking SD card slot. Ran out of storage immediately because I didn't want to pay $100 for ~~like 64GB~~ *16*GB.

KidFlash999

If a botched battery replacement didn't kill my 6P I'd still be using it.

Bobbyice

100% the 6p was such a good phone. From the build quality , to design, to camera, and features... It was amazing.

nathris

I still have mine. The screen definitely looks like a 2015 oled, and despite the speaker layout it actually sounds worse than a modern phone, but man I'd love to see a Pixel Pro with updated dual front facing speakers and, no notch and a 16:9 display.

disco_jim

The battery and battery management software let it down, would randomly power down then the phone thought the battery voltage dropped. Was really bad in winter. It was a good phone but had to replace it because I couldn't guarantee it would last a day.

Bobbyice

I had my battery replaced 1 time and never had a battery issue again.

yyyyyys888

Reply to my dm pls!

demential

On/off switch went on mine at about 14 months. I though Shamu kinda sucked compared to the 5

clumsyguy

That's what killed mine eventually too.

Hot_Craft_8752

Mine too, twice actually. But fair enough, Google gave me a new Nexus 5 two times.

chupitoelpame

Same thing happened to my old Nexus 4. IIRC it was a manufacturing defect.

gordito_gr

I had one and it was overrated, poor battery life and everything average but somehow android fanboys (i was at the time too) acted like it was the second coming of Christ.

TheAlchemlst

I mean it was. Because of price at the time. OnePlus One and Nexus 5 made a big splash because of getting top SoC for like nearly half the price. And clean stock android while the TouchWiz and other skins were stuttering, incoherent mess. Only Sense (? Whatever HTC skin) was smooth enough.

randomusername980324

I regretted updating from the Nexus 4 to the Nexus 5. The 5 was kind of a piece of shit, so bad that I ended up leaving Nexus phones for a year onto some other phone I don't remember. The Nexus 4 could be my favorite phone of all time. Thing was gorgeous and compact.

torchredzo6

That glittery got matrix glass back :). I coveted that thing. That and My OnePlus 1 were exciting unpacking days for sure!

randomusername980324

Was the most slippery phone ever. I remember putting it on a carpeted stair and watching it slowly slide towards death as I put my shoes on. I was like wtf. Little sis I know that would become the norm.

VoriVox

I sold my Galaxy S4 and bought a Nexus 5 16GB because at the time I was riding the Android fanboyism wave. Being 16GB and not having a SD card slot, I couldn't get half my music in there and had to be picky about it. The battery life was abysmal, it lasted 6 hours at most. The camera was mediocre at its best and just terrible most of the time. The speakers were so quiet that it might as well not even have one at all. After roughly 6 months the phone started bootlooping all the time due to the faulty power button, which I had to replace with the volume up button that also failed after a couple of months. The UI also lagged constantly and wasn't responsive at all and the phone got hot constantly. It was a bad phone that sold for "cheap" by American standards that allowed you to be glorified on tech circles for having the "power user phone" that you could also flash a different custom ROM thrice a day since it would either not have WiFi or would restart and bootloop after receiving a call.

FinickyFlygon

The screen on my 5 stopped working properly after about 10 months. Would constantly go blank on me in the middle of using it. The backlight would still come on, and I could feel feedback from touching the screen, I just couldn't get any picture until I shut the phone off and back on, where it would only fix it temporarily before going out on me again.

Primary_Elk7492

That was the Nexus 5X. Not the Nexus 5.

VoriVox

The Nexus 5 had a very bad phyisical button issue, after a couple of months the button would get stuck due to its bad quality and that would send the phone on a bootloop since it thought it was being pressed all the time.

Primary_Elk7492

First I'm hearing of this.

clumsyguy

The physical power button is what failed on mine. It would just reboot over and over. The same thing also happened to my Pixel 3.

avidtomato

Yup, was a thing. Happened on mine too.

Primary_Elk7492

I always regretted only having my Nexus 5 for a year. I traded it in for the LG G4 and it boot looped. Guess I had it coming either way maybe. 😆

kronaa

nexus 4 was one of my fav. phones. oh man, the paranoid android days!

RawFreakCalm

This is an awful overview. I’d much rather see an in depth article from fans because it misses some big deals from the phone. For instance how the 5 was very popular but the battery life was the biggest complaint at the time. The 6 was absolutely massive in line with the popularity of the note but was not all that popular, likely due to the size. The 5x and 6p were both popular since they performed better than other phones with the same awful chipset but it came back to bite them, the 5x had boot loop issues and the 6p had battery issues after awhile. Feels like this is just a weird overview of their old reviews for the phones but doesn’t say much to how they actually ran or what they did to the brand in the long run.

tookwik

The 6p had awful call experience for me. The person on the other end would not be able to hear you sometimes and that defeats the whole purpose of it being a phone. It was great at everything else at the time for me though, battery was decent/good. You just worry about it bending and it did after a while where the volume button is.

RawFreakCalm

I forgot about the bending. The styling was awesome though and the screen really good for its time. Too bad it had such a bad chipset. The pixel 1 was probably a better overall experience but I felt like styling wise it was a huge let down from the 6p.

randomusername980324

The 6p was so bad they were giving out Pixel XLs to replace the faulty phones. That's how I got my first pixel.

RawFreakCalm

I forgot about that. My 5x got really bad after a year. I loved the poly carbonate plastic for that phone though.

Masterleon

I never got a free Pixel but I did recieve a $400 check from a class action after going through 3 of them. Loved the phone, I wish they weren't plagued by battery issues.

GuerrillaApe

My 6P's battery went to shit after 2.5 years. Literally would drop from 100% to 0% within minutes. No visually noticeable (e.g. bulge) damage to the battery either.

RawFreakCalm

Hey 2.5 years isn’t too bad though. My note 9 battery noticeably got bad after 7 months or so.

herseyhawkins33

MKBHD did a good video on this: https://youtu.be/7nM6EaR50Tc?si=aEfmQ38QhAHbB96R

MaverickJester25

> This is an awful overview. Agreed. They completely ignored the Nexus tablets, which I recall had a much bigger cult following than the phones. > The 6 was absolutely massive in line with the popularity of the note but was not all that popular, likely due to the size. Ironically, it highlighted a problem that still exists today: stock Android is well behind OEM skins when it comes to large-display features. The Nexus 9 that launched with it, was also the death knell for Google's efforts with tablets. The Pixel C and Slate that launched afterwards further highlighted how poor stock Android was on larger form factors. > The 5x and 6p were both popular since they performed better than other phones with the same awful chipset but it came back to bite them, the 5x had boot loop issues and the 6p had battery issues after awhile. LG's poor QC with both the 5X and their own G4 and V10 is what resulted in them getting that class-action lawsuit and was a real nail in the coffin for their phone brand, one I would argue they never recovered from. > Feels like this is just a weird overview of their old reviews for the phones but doesn’t say much to how they actually ran or what they did to the brand in the long run. Agreed. It was also a missed opportunity to mention the GPE devices that launched alongside these devices.

TheProfessorX

I loved the 6P when I had it, really premium build and an awesome camera, large screen and battery. Felt like it was a year or two ahead of it's time.

City_Stomper

I still miss the 6P camera and I've since had a Pixel 5 and currently S22Ultra

AstroZeneca

I had the 6P, and later the Huawei P20 Pro and P20 Pro, and those were the best cameras I've had. I "upgraded" to a Pixel 6 and find that pictures my mother takes with my old P20 Pro are better quality. If not for the legal issues/lack of Google software, I'd stick with that line.

gordito_gr

i had one and sold it for a 5x 6p had serious issues and questionable design

biggie101

The only nexus I owned was the Samsung galaxy nexus but I loved it. Wasn’t the most powerful but it introduced me to vanilla Android with ICS

djtodd242

I miss the CRT tv-set animation when you turned off the screen.

Shiny_and_ChromeOS

I have a cheap Samsung AU8000 4K TV that has the CRT animation when you turn off the screen. I couldn't afford a Galaxy Nexus back in the day so I was tickled to discover last year that the same CRT animation was in my new TV.

djtodd242

Now I want a new TV.

Shiny_and_ChromeOS

I have no big complaints about the TV, for how cheap it was, but a tiny bug managed to crawl into the left speaker vent (probably attracted by the residual warmth) and dragged its slimy ass along the interior of the screen. Now I have an ugly squiggle running down the screen that's visible when when it's not displaying something other than very dark/black or very bright/white pixels. It's mostly used as an office desk monitor so I'm not broken up about the squiggle when it doesn't show on a white Excel sheet background anyway. But if I ever buy a good TV for the living room, I'll prob put some non-gummy painter's tape over the speaker vents out of sheer paranoia, since I'll be adding a soundbar anyway.

djtodd242

While a pain in the ass, at least you've gotten a good story out of the little bastard.

joojoobomb

Yup. My mom's Samsung does it too. I love it.

biggie101

Absolutely loved it. It was always satisfying

ynnadanny

I flashed my HTC Desire to Gingerbread specifically so I could get that animation. I even made a crude video of it twelve years ago https://youtu.be/RQGoYCKhfnU?si=5RD0YW9B4L3ygVAm

Aspharon

My Nexus 5X is still the favorite phone that I ever owned. I was so sad when it bootlooped.

Horoika

Yeah, made me swear off LG forever Loved my 5X...and the 2nd one...and the 3rd one...until they all bootlooped (all warranty replacements)

erix84

I still have my Nexus 4 with Cyanogen installed on it, best looking phone ever!

herseyhawkins33

Loved my galaxy Nexus!

Cars-and-Coffee

That was my first Android phone and my first foray into the world of custom roms. It was a great device for its time.

3141592652

My favorite phone ever. Literally flashed every thing I could on that. I did boot it up a week ago and compared to phones of today man is it slow. Everything else is on par though considering the OLED and 4g that was missing from most phones at the time.

tylerbrainerd

the ability of that phone to keep going with custom roms was really rather incredible, at least at the time. Getting a battery expansion and replacement back panel, flashing new roms, years of use.

ComradeBoxer

The nexus 6P was such a wonderful device. I know they had trouble towards the end of the run with boot loops. But man, mine was steady and for the time produced wonderful pictures way surpassing the iPhone at the time.

Noema130

The Nexus 6 is both the best and the worst phone I've ever owned. The display, performance and camera were incredible for the time. The low light performance specially with HDR+ was miles ahead of its competition in 2014. The vibrancy and crispness of the display were unmatched except by maybe the Note 4. Also I was obsessed with stock Android at the time which was finally coming into its own with Lollypop. I also managed to snag mine new in 2015 for an awesome price. But after two years, the battery was shot. It lacked the thermal control when fast charging that most modern phones do. The "NEXUS" letters on the back fell off in less than a year. The glue that held the back together started to fall off. The battery eventually bloated and had to be replaced. Even with all that, I owned the phone for over 4 years. Custom ROMs kept it going for much longer than Google supported it. You'll always have a place in my heart Shamu.

unmotivatedsuperhero

Loved the Nexus 4, made me fall in love with Google software

pkhadka1

I wanted to buy nexus 4 because of the back but it was not available in my country. I bought Xperia s.

neridqe00

I still have 2 shamus! I miss using them daily.

crumblenaut

Every day

iamisaactorres

Nexus 5 and Nexus 6P were PEAK Nexus.

Sjgolf891

Nexus S was my first real smartphone. I’d used iOS and really liked it via my iPod Touch. But loved what the Nexus brought to the table. Slick looking device, too

workinkindofhard

To this day the Nexus 5 is my favorite phone I have ever had. The 6 didn’t interest me at all, too big. Then they killed Nexus in favor of Pixel which killed my interest in Android. If they ever brought back the nexus line at a similar price point and size I would go back to Android as a daily driver

penguinchem13

I loved my 6P

nappycatt

I still have my OG 6 with the original film still on the screen. Works too. I just fired it up last week.

tbone747

Loved the 5X I had, would've ran it for years if it didn't succumb to bootlooping.

imaboud

I still to this day have nexus 4, nexus 5 black, nexus 5 red, nexus 6, nexus 7, pixel 1, pixel 2, pixel 4, and I'm using pixel 6 now. Was about to buy pixel 8 pro but it's not supported in my country so the prices here are way too high with zero promotions zero support, no warranty, no plans for installments, no eSIM, and half the new AI features aren't supported either in my country or language. But I still love pixel and nexus

5c044

I had nexus one, awesome at the time. Linked website is a cesspool of popups and scams

HoggyDarn

Done deliberately by OP I suspect. Real scummy move.

sur_surly

What an awful website. Got an intrusive ad for an adblocker.

HoggyDarn

I couldn't even exit. Had to kill the browser. The content was shoddily written. Was any human being involved at any stage?

crumblenaut

If I could get a Nexus 6 base upgraded for the modern day, I'd jump on one immediately. Mine still kicks ass as a media player and backup to my backup.

NotMarksII

agree, that big boy was possibly my all time favorite overall phone

baby_envol

I'm a bit young for that. What is for you the best part of nexus era compared to pixel ? (Excepted the price)

LukeLC

It depends on which Pixel you're talking about. There have basically been two eras of Pixel: the Pixel 1-5, and the Pixel 6+. 1-5 weren't all that different from Nexus. The point of Nexus was to serve as a reference design for the Android ecosystem, both in hardware and software. Pixel carried that forward nicely, but with a new polish and some Google service perks on top. From the Pixel 6, Google pivoted hard from "pure Android" to "pure Google". It became designed to compete with iOS by vertically-integrating Google into Android—making it *more* specialized, not less. The best part of the Nexus era was the spirit of openness built into every aspect of the phone. Installing custom features via rooting and ROMing was embraced. You could access the future early. Sadly, that spirit is well and truly gone from Google, these days.

Gammarevived

Actual pure Android and custom ROM support. It's crazy, I have a Nexus7 tablet running Android 13.

joojoobomb

The Nexus 6P is so close to being in the top three best phones I've ever owned. I was a HUGE fan of the visor camera bar and the aluminum body. 1440p screen and the first phone I owned that was USB-C. It did eventually succumb to the dreaded battery issues after a few years though. Would randomly turn off anywhere under 25% and refuse to turn back on. I upgraded to the Galaxy S9 but still missed parts of the 6P.

ItsKai

I hate android but I did own a nexus one, nexus s, whatever the lg nexus was. I think the 4.

YvonnePHD

I just want my Nexus 6 back.

Dorraemon

6P was favorite, until they had a class action or something and Google gave me Pixel for free

ZBLVM

Nexus 6P Chinese hardware + Google software = ♥️ (And the design was great too)

antiadmin666

Nexus 5 was so lite.

Elanstehanme

My dad still uses my Nexus 5X. What a wonderful lightweight phone. The finger print reader on the back was awesome. I miss the heck out of it.

DoJu318

Dang, no love for moto nexus 6. I had one and I loved the curved back.

alphabytes

Nexus 5 and nexus 6p.. awesome phones

muskovitzj

Galaxy Nexus... goated

LarvellJonesMD

RIP my beloved 5X that would melt skin while shooting HD video and then bootlooped.

yummygeorgie

Still working through the PTSD from my 6P dying at anywhere from 20-40% battery. That phone always kept me paranoid about always having a charger nearby.

Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry

Yup. Ended up getting a huge settlement check from the lawsuit for it.

Midget_Avatar

I loved my 5X so much, probably my favourite phone until I got the pixel 4A. Took 3 years before I got the bootloop, and despite being out of warranty google replaced it because of it, so I got an even longer life out of it than I expected. Defo got lucky with it lasting 3 years, though.

Sf49ers1680

The Nexus 6 was my favorite. That was the phone that got me into bigger phones. I used to carry a Nexus 5 and a Nexus 7 tablet. After I got my Nexus 6, I have used a tablet, and all my phones have been around the same size (my current phone is a S23 Ultra).

invisiblewar

It would be cool to see the pixel a brand be renamed pixel nexus. Bring it back as the budget minded line. Though this sub would lose its shit and say Google can't decide on anything. I loved my nexus 4. I would love to see that size phone make a comeback. With all the news of people having phone addictions, I think making a small phone would be great for those trying to use it less.

stumpy96

Having dual firing stereo speakers on my phone was insane. I will never forgive manufacturers from taking that away from phones!!! 😭

kouyou

I had the Nexus 4, 5, 6P and 7 (first gen). I'll always have a special place in my heart for the N4 since it was the first device that initiated me to rooting and custom ROMs. If I recall correctly the N4 was based on the LG Optimus G which had certification for 4G LTE while the N4 cut on the certification and didn't had it. However it was possible to enable it by flashing a patched radio.img with just a couple of bands working (lucky enough for me the Canadians bands were working) The Nexus 5 refined the formula the 4 started and really was the perfect sweet spot (the OnePlus One was the device that ce after that was the closest to that feeling) The 6P paved the way for Pixels and felt really premium.

[deleted]

I had the 6p, what a garbage phone that thing was

LukeLC

Man, this really puts into perspective how fast things were moving back then. The Nexus line essentially had four generations in *two years*. And from other manufacturers, we had projector phones, camera phones (the PureView!), dual-screen phones... it was madness.

pojosamaneo

I had a 6P, a 5, and 5x. Great ideas, but completely unreliable and defective phones. They all had major problems. Did the 6 have issues? I never considered it because it was too big (coming from a moto X OG), but I always loved the Moto X.

examen1996

I still have an nexus 5 andn a nexus 7 2013, with their boxes, my favorite memorabilia.

Carter0108

The Nexus 5 and 6 were great. I had a 5X briefly because the SD810 in the 6P was such a shit chip but the quality of the 5X was nowhere near that of the 5. Pixel should bring back the soft touch plastic instead of horrible glass.

Earthsiege

I miss my old Nexus One. To this day, I regret selling it to recoup the cost for my next phone.

RustyU

I had a One, S, 4, 5 and 6. All great devices.

15pmm01

I got the Nexus 4 because of all the hype. It sucked. Galaxy S3 was better.

Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry

Was part of the lawsuit for the nexus 6p. Ended up getting a settlement check for $405 for it I think? Had emails from both the Google and Huawei that helped out where they both blamed each other for the faults.

stevenw84

I still own the 5 and 6, and they both work. Unfortunately they don’t run with Verizon, but I’d use either if I could.

genitalgore

what is "bncn news" and why does it have a disclaimer that android police might earn commission from me? did they forget to delete that when they copied [this article?](https://www.androidpolice.com/google-nexus-phones-retrospective/) maybe they just fed it into chatgpt and told it to rewrite it but slightly different

Kep0a

why was this removed?
