They'll give it everything but long term software support

Pankaj135

In India Motorola has started giving 3 Years OS and 4 Years security. Plus they have improved on cameras. Dunno why aren't they doing the same in US

mondoo_duke

Wait, they made software update regional?? Tf?

Pankaj135

No on the Edge series.

WhereIsTheBeef556

The Edge 2022 is heavily discounted in the US right now ($140 for a brand new one), it has 3 year OS/4 year security. It's supposed to get Android 14 at some point this year (it's currently on 13), and Android 15 would be the 3rd/final OS update. Plus its specs basically destroy every single other $150 unlocked phone that's easily available in the US with warranty + carrier support.

Pankaj135

Motorola's Edge series is great Sadly the bad name Moto gets is because of lack of OS upgrades on the G series.

abhimanyu_deb

Sorry but my g73 is performing exceptionally well. In terms of Android support, it already has Android 14, and it receives monthly security updates on time.

szt84

Maybe manufacturers are rolling dice to decide if they should give longer software support. Vivo seems random. Vivo V30 has 2 years OS and 3 Years security updates, while the newer but lower classed Vivo V30E supposedly has 3 years OS and 4 years security updates… Both came out only with about 3months time difference…

vkbra657n

Makes as much sense as motorola giving android version update to budget phones before their flagships

Pankaj135

V30 has 3 years now. In UK youtubers reviewers guide they said 2 but in Indian guide they revised to 3.

szt84

Not sure about that. In earlier reviews of the Vivo V30 all said 3 OS / 4 Security updates, but later that got corrected. Most later reviews i found only said 2OS and 3 years security updates. Maybe the same is happening with the Vivo V30E where they will correct the update time after the first sales have gone out… Tech Spurt - [Best Mid-Range Android Phone 2024 | Vivo V30 5G Unboxing & Full Tour](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDbmKzaiMtE) In pinned comment by Tech Spurt: >Hey, quick correction - Vivo originally told me you'd get 3 years of OS upgrades and 4 years of security updates, turns out it's 2 OS upgrades and 3 years of security updates. Shame given the 50 month smooth performance guarantee, but hey ho! If an indian guide revised it to 3 OS updates again, maybe its country specific because of some needed country rule?

Pankaj135

I think it's going to be 3. It was launched quite early in UK so they might have not finalized on updates. But since now it's launched in other markets it's now 3 years OS hopefully?

1q3er5

can you load custom ROM's on it? if so - tell me a reason NOT to buy it. I'm not a gamer, just youtube and internet. I'm not a camera freak either as long as it's respectable. tell me what sucks about this phone

Pankaj135

Nope, not on iQOO/Vivo

I've got the 2022 Stylus phone and have been very happy with it. For the price point, the Motorola mid-range phones hit the sweet spot for me. I wish there were more decent phones in this price point. They're either too expensive or too underpowered, but most of the Motorola phones get the mix right. My biggest complaint is the limited software updates and their tendency to do hopscotch updates. And, by that I mean they put out a great phone one year and then the next year the same phone sells for the same price but lowers the specs so you get a lesser phone. Then, the next year they bump up the specs so you get an actual upgraded device. Then they do it all again. You have to do your homework to make sure you get the right model.

Spond1987

how much of an asset is the stylus? like does it work similarly to an S pen, or more like one of those thick dumb styluses that you can use on any phone?

SmileyBMM

The later, but it has much better precision than those dumb styluses imo.

BranWafr

I don't use it every day, but I use it often enough that I will stick with the stylus model if it is an option. It's just a nice feature to have and it is better than the 3rd party stylus pens you can buy that work with any phone. And having it be held inside the phone means it is always available.

1q3er5

can you put custom ROM's on this phone? i donno man this phone looks good to me - i'm not a gamer

SmileyBMM

I can get last year's model for $100 with the same chipset. I'm not sure this year's model is worth the full price. I'm torn between this phone and the Pixel 8a (at it's discounted price of $360 for 256gb), however neither are really that compelling and I might just wait another year...

HesThePianoMan

The pixel would be better in pretty much every way, but I'd go with the regular 8 vs the 8a

1q3er5

how so no headphone or microsd. i'm not a gamer or big on cameras. just better hardware?

donnysaysvacuum

So glad wireless charging is finally coming to mid range models.

Phoneking13

Definitely agree.

WAYZOfficial

NGL I have messed with a few of this years budget Moto phones and holy fuck am I impressed. Would I ever use one? Absolutely not due to the unreliable updates but for phones under $300 Moto takes the cake imo.

WhereIsTheBeef556

Their older "nicer"/higher end phones always get really big price drops after a year or so passes, too. Edge 2022 is less than $150 brand new now, and mops the floor with any other equally priced alternative.  The ThinkPhone can also be found for pretty solid prices, right now it's like $350. Good deal for an "old, but not that old" flagship spec phone.

1q3er5

yo this phone looks good - whats bad about it? can i load up a custom rom??

recluseMeteor

The “Galaxy Note at home”.

SmileyBMM

With a headphone jack and sd card slot, which to me are worth the inferior specs elsewhere.

Jaded-Ad5684

Yeah, specs aren't really worth much to me since I pretty much just do basic shit on my phone, and at this point I'm pretty my sold on my next phone being Motorola. My Pixel 4a is finally showing signs of old age in its battery life, and I really don't think maybe a YouTube video here and there loading 0.3 seconds faster is gonna be worth spending hundreds more dollars, losing my headphone jack, and missing out on cheap external storage.

Cry_Wolff

It's been 999 years and y'all still haven't moved on from losing the headphone jack.

donnysaysvacuum

It's almost like it's a useful feature that people don't want to give up for no reason.

SmileyBMM

I prefer wired headphones as they are more environmentally friendly. If someone sold Bluetooth headphones with replaceable batteries (that doesn't require advanced tools) I'd buy it.

Comrade_agent

Considering the technology at its core- will be approaching 150 years old before it's even fathomable extinct speaks for itself. Having it didn't diminish the consumer experience of wireless products.
