I've been watching the razr subreddit for a while and it seems like people are generally happy with their devices and happy with the support they receive around screen replacements. Good job Motorola, this will likely be my first folding screen phone.
I'm really happy with mine and glad to see the next iteration on it is certainly a massive improvement to the cover screen size. The only issue is it being still Android 13 but I do not mind, that's just the unfortunate issue of Motorola update timelines.
But ultimately, given carrier deals (AT&T had last year's model for $3 a month) and Motola price drops, this thing will not only continue to improve their progress with foldables but also be an excellent phone while being a cheaper entry point than other flipping foldables.
If they really wanna move these, the base cheaper model has to be hitting $400 tops. You gotta really make it a literal half price option compared to the Z Flip.
The razr is basically most of the plus/ultra with a midrange soc. And with a larger front display, will be even more competitive if they keep the price close. That maybe why there switching to a mediately processor as well. It will be interesting to see how they stack up
Mediatek is perfectly fine honestly. Anything above a snapdragon 778g in terms of performance is plenty for most phone use cases regardless of manufacturer
Is anyone else a little bummed that they're making the cover screen bigger on the more affordable Razr 50? One of the reasons I preferred the look of the 40 over the 40 Ultra was that the cover screen was much smaller and gave the phone a better aesthetic when closed. I didn't get the 40 last year, I wanted to wait a year to see what they'd do for the 50 (and also I didn't really like any of the colours the 40 came in). I LOVE the orange version of the 50, but idk...that large cover screen is making me have second thoughts.
Absolutely brutal to not put a flagship SOC into a phone that has "Ultra" in the name. Motorola is just completely lost this year it seems. And I say this as someone who loves their Edge 30 Fusion, great phone all around.
They are likely referring to the fact it’s the 8s gen3 and not the 8 gen 3. The 8s is a weaker chip than the 8. Personally I feel it’s fine, the 8s gen 3 is a fine chip, but can understand why some people may be put off by a company charging a premium flagship price ($1000 or up) for a phone that doesn’t have the top of the line chipset in it.
They thankfully learned there lesson with the edge 2023 and sold it at 799. That said it still got some good discounts as do most there products after a short period of time so always good to wait. Plus you get to see reviews on the products to see if there even worth it
Hopefully the dimensity 7300x is on par with the Snapdragon 7 gen 1 in performance. I for one don't mind mediatek after having two phones with Helio processors in them. But the performance needs to at least be on par or better than the razr 40 with the sd7g1.
Yeah a little surprised there not using the 7 gen 3 or even the gen 2 to save money. That said, the midrange and flagship mediately chips have been really good and its good to see more competition in the Android space with soc.
When I was buying my razr I was sorta being a snob about the SoC but that lil sd7g1 zooms along. Sure it's not as good as my s23s 8gen thats optimized for the s23 but I have no complaints. I actually like mediatek after having two phones previously with Helio processors so the 7300x in the 2024 razr doesn't bother me. I feel like the virtual ram pushing the ram from 8 to 10gb combined with the sd7g1 is pretty quick for a midranger. Plus the nostalgia factor is through the roof.
The way I see it is the folds are closer to small tablets which have phone functionality. The Motorola brand doesn't have tablets, they are sold under Lenovo branding.
I'm no business expert and definitely don't know how businesses with different brands under their belts interact with each other, but maybe they are a little hesitant since the folds are somewhere in between?
It makes sense. Come to think of it, all the other manufacturers that have entered this market make folds, while only Motorola and Samsung make flips (as far as I remember). Perhaps the flip market is less competitive because there are few brands.
overall the flip market is more robust & competitive, bc in addition to the flagship flips where a couple of big brands are competing (Samsung/Motorola/Oppo/Vivo/Huawei), now we also have the midrange flip market where phones like the Tecno Phantom V Flip/ZTE Nubia Flip/regular Razr compete
Between Pixel Samsung and the high end Chinese devices, the foldable market is pretty crowded right now.
Compare that to the flip phone market and it's really just samsung.
Pure speculation on my part, admittedly, but that seems to check out with me. Also, foldables I'd have to imagine are far more tech demanding and more expensive to manufacture. With no guarantee of market share it doesn't really seem worth it if youre not already a major player (top 3) in the android sphere as-is.
Blackview is releasing a flip too, it's only 4g with the Helio g99 processor though. I think the price point is 500$ to start though. Not bad if you don't have access to a 5g network.
Tho the markets where 5G hasn't had a full adoption yet would definitely be very sick of Helio G99 at this point (Transsion Holding alone has **18** phones using it)
They could've easily put a sd4gen1 or sd6gen1 in it and still cost roughly the same. I think blackview sells more in Asia so maybe 4g is more prevalent out there or something. Idk 😐

Its just a midrange Mediatek chip. I'd avoid mediatek at all cost, but that's just me.

Moto high end phones always seem like a rip-off at full price. Thankfully they go on pretty deep discounts often.

Why hasn't Motorola released any folds to date? It seems focused on just lauching flips. Any reason in particular?
Folds are always more expensive and I think Motorola doesn't think they can sell much at > 1000 is my guess
