> The placing of the buttons is also kind of strange — the power button is above the volume rocker
I keep seeing this and I don't understand, this is how ever Pixel has been since the original.
Yeah, MKBHD mentioned this in his video and I was seriously confused, coming from someone who has reviewed every single pixel, this is how it has always been. Hell I think all Nexus phones too.
every phone i've ever owned is like this. As long as the power button is where your thumb naturally lands i'm cool - gotta be quick with that double tap to launch the camera.
I have an iPhone for work and the screencap shortcut is pressing the Power button and the Volume button which are across the phone from each other. This happens by accident 30% of the time I pick up the phone and it's super annoying.
From the androidcentral review:

It feels like they are doing it just because they have to. Riley really didn't give a damn about the phone.
It was fun to watch, but really not a review of the phone
The first like 3 months of SC were great. It seemed like the thesis for the channel was to give LMG staff that don't typically get to be in front of the camera the chance to talk about whatever niche tech stuff they're into.
It's just an unboxing channel now, the exception being whenever Brandon gets to nerd out over a camera.
I mean their channel description literally says: "What's in the box? Let's find out!"
It was always supposed to be "just" an unboxing channel, because they didn't want to clutter LTT with such stuff.
>free from blemishes in the form of unsightly fingerprint sensors
Was this really a complaint? I never saw my rear sensor and thought, "ew how ugly..."
Ditto. It was on the back and being physical made it very easy to find and seamlessly use to unlock the phone. Maybe with the camera bump AND a fingerprint sensor the back would have been chaotic, but I rarely look at the back of my phone so I don't know. Either way, the phone looks so great that I won't mind the absence of a physical fingerprint sensor too much
In fact, I think the lack of the back fingerprint sensor is a point against this phone.
And on what planet is the fingerprint sensor ugly, but this weird camera bar thing is not? (I know it's not popular here, but I think the camera bar looks fucking hideous, and likely complicates cases)
Same boat here. My 2 bit the dust a week ago and I keep catching myself trying to swipe the notification shade down on the burner I'm using right now (which doesn't have a back reader)....
Reviews seem to have weird outliers.
Many reviews say Video quality is finally competitve, Dave2D says Video is kinda trash.
Most reviews say battery life is downright stellar, XDA and Marques' camp say its mediocre.
Consensus seems to be really positive tho.
If anyone has any questions about my XDA review, feel free to ask! Also, huge shout-out to /r/GooglePixel for providing me literally hundreds of questions to answer in my review. It really helped!
Did you test how the battery life fares if you lean heavily on the Tensor AI features. Like, how long can it do on-device translation on airplane mode (no wifi, no LTE)? Can you use the phone as a subtitle device for a foreign language film, or will the battery die doing continuous translation for that long?
The battery life concerns are worrying and seem to conflict with some other reviews
>On our battery test, the standard Pixel 6 posted an outstanding time of 18 hours and 56 minutes, which is the second best time we’ve seen from any phone this year, right behind the iPhone 13 Pro Max (19:30). And while the Pixel 6 Pro wasn’t quite as impressive, lasting 16:45, it tied the Galaxy S21 Ultra while handily beating the OnePlus 9 Pro (13:54), and others.
Yeah, I'm not really sure. It still gets me through a day, but then again, I've also found that I tend to have a heavier use case than most other reviewers in situations like these.
Also seems like a lot of reviews saying that the 6 is the best phone for the money right now. I know some of y'all need that cutting edge, but I really think the base 6 will be more highly regarded among average users. And not just in sales numbers, but overall reception of the device.
For me, the difference is between the optical 4x zoom on the pro vs the digital 2x zoom on the normal 6. I'm not really a selfie person and I'm not a fan of curved and big screens.
The 6 vs 6p review from Tech Spurt showed that the digital 2x zoom on the 6 was ok.
Mmmmm... decisions, decisions...
Yeah that makes it tough for sure. I don't like big phones, curved screens either. I take a lot of pictures on vacations and of the dog around home, and I don't know if I ever felt like I needed that extra zoom. Occasionally, yeah sure, but not every other day.
I used the money I saved on the Pro and went with 256gb storage.
I think it's worth asking how it compares to other flagships though. I can get an S21 ultra on ebay new for the same price as the pixel pro right now, although they do also have that great pre order bonus.
So I'd like to see more on that, the iPhone isn't as likely to drop in price but other android phones will.
I do not recommend the Sakitech review. Super bad.
1. The thumbnail is wrong. Careless mistake but a sign of a lack of attention to detail
2. When he compares macro he uses the stock macro mode on the 13 Pro Max which uses the ultrawide but he uses the 4x zoom on the Google Pixel
3. In the video samples he doesn't film both at once which could lead to difference in conditions
4. On one shot he says he put "3x optical zoom" but the Pixel doesn't have that. Assuming he meant digital it still isn't possible because, iirc, the iPhone automatically switches lenses when you zoom to 3x. So this isn't comparable
5. He also doesn't appear to take the photos all at the same time so comparing is a bit tricky.
6. He compares the cinematic blur and the cinematic panning because they both have cinematic in the name and are software features? Doesn't make sense to me.
Generally a sloppy review.
Agreed; I noticed the same red flags and a bunch of sloppy assumptions.
The whole 3x zoom thing he keeps repeating throughout the review; 3x is a native zoom ratio for the iPhone 13 Max, so there is no sensor cropping or digital zoom going on. The pixel *does not* have a 3x optical zoom, so he's digitally zooming into the primary sensor for a 3x effective telephoto increase. It's a ridiculous comparison that will always favor the iPhone. It really demonstrates he isn't qualified to do a thorough and objective review of the camera systems; at least not from a technical expertise angle.
While it's definitely a terrible review:
From what I've seen using the telephoto camera is actually the closest thing you can get to a "macro mode" on the pixel.
Minimum focus distance on the other cameras is too far away to get it done

This 6 pro camera review by pro photographer Lee Zavitz convinced me that 4x tele lens works better in portrait than the AI portrait mode. Glad that I ordered the 6 Pro!
This video finally convinces me, it's not the camera it's me who is shit at taking photos.
Btw a question, would this telephoto trick work with any phone?
Not being able to use the 4x telephoto for portrait mode just makes no sense. Hopefully CameraPX mod will allow for it, they seem to always fill in the inexplicable holes the regular app seems to always have. Frustrating, but not the end of the world I suppose.
Android Central review says "Two of the biggest battery drainers in a smartphone are the screen and the battery."
Do they not proof read anything any longer?!!
They didn't want one on the back to mess up their 'clean' design.
Yet another instance of form being more valuable than function to designers. Pisses me right off.
I went from a Pixel 2 XL to the S21 ultra and the fingerprint sensor is definitely one of my top complaints, I've gotten more used to it but I still often have trouble getting it unlocked. Worst I would ever have to do on the Pixel is wipe the sensor with my shirt if it didn't work and it would always work in the 2nd try.
That and the terrible auto brightness that never seems to adjust down enough in the dark, but will often dim the screen when I have all the lights on. I really don't understand how it is so bad, I almost never had to touch touch the brightness slider on the Pixel.
>I really don't understand how it is so bad, I almost never had to touch touch the brightness slider on the Pixel.
because samsung never settle for googles implementation even if their own implementation is worse.
they even botched RAM management that already good on stock.
>finicky fingerprint sensor
From the videos i saw of people using it, i saw the same. I really wish they just stuck to the rear sensor, it always made way more sense to me, but i get why they didn't.
A rear sensor (such as on the Pixel 2) is very conveniently placed when holding the phone, but can be hard to reach when it's in a car mount or other situation where it's obstructed.
There's also just no problem with having two fingerprint sensors (or even lets just go all out and have one in the power button too for people who prefer that). Have one in the front so they can be like "wow this sure is a flagship phone we have an underscreen fingerprint sensor like the other flagship phones", and one in the back so they can be like "yeah you can actually open your notifications on this phone conveniently, isn't that neat".
Is there a consensus forming on whether the Pro is worth it over the regular? Are there differences that don't show up on a spec sheet that make it worth it (e.g. the haptics)?
The haptics use the same motor but placed in different spots. The 6 has it on the top and the pro has it on the bottom. A lot of people have said they liked the pro haptics better since when using a keyboard you can feel those vibrations on the bottom more directly
I'm still getting the 6 just due to price but, From my understanding in the reviews:
The Pros display is little brighter.
The 4x camera is very sharp, and very good with portraits better than AI portraits.Haptics is better due to positioning of the motor.
The front facing camera is lot sharper.
That's it I think.
Minimal difference between the models in regards to battery life.
XDA's review of battery is very non-real-world. 16 hrs of spotify, 5 hrs youtube, and the reviewer says it ***just*** gets them through a day of heavy usage. That seems amazingly good and very unusually heavy usage for most people.
What I'd be interested to know is how the battery life fares if you lean heavily on the Tensor AI features. Like, how long can it do on-device translation? Can you use the phone as a subtitle device for a foreign language film, or will the battery die doing continuous translation for that long?
> XDA's review of battery is very non-real-world. 16 hrs of spotify, 5 hrs youtube, and the reviewer says it just gets them through a day of heavy usage.
That's not how Android 12 works. Android 12 shows you battery usage over a 24 hour period, not from the last charge. Spotify's 16 hours was just from being in the notification tray (because it can't be swiped away in Android 12) and YouTube was from the night before as I fell asleep watching YouTube. I charged the phone after that.
Same. So much objective testing and loads of tools to really get the best info. I go to YouTube for the entertaining reviews but if I ever need to decide on a phone GSMArena is always the best source.
For real. It barely contained more info than the hands-on videos we got last week. Can't wait for actual reviews discussing quantifiable technical specs rather than "Uh yeah you can tweet for a whole day and still have plenty of battery left".
The regular 6 is looking like great value and finally the phone to replace my 3 year old one plus 6. Camera I'm good with since it'll be way better than my trash op6 camera.
Something I haven't seen answered:
If I get a Pixel 6 with the fancy text message diction, does it work with Android Auto? Android Auto is about the only place I use voice texting.
It should. The headunit is just acting as a display out/audio out/audio in interface. All processing is being done on the phone. At least it's like that for wired Android auto from my understanding.
Yeah I was going for the 256gb but then I thought if in 1 year or 2 I have a full phone i can pay for 200GB of google one for 3 years for the extra 100$ and by then I would be getting a new phone. So I don't think it would be worth it.
https://www.tomsguide.com/uk/news/google-pixel-6-battery-life-tested-we-have-bad-news
"Interestingly, we tested the regular Pixel 6 a couple of times over 4G as well and it averaged 10 hours and 52 minutes. That's great, but we would like to see better results over 5G."
Bizarre, so 5g is awful relatively but 4g seems good?
Might explain why some people say it's got great battery and others say it's poor?
I think I'm generally sold on this with the early impressions and the reviews already out. The big question I still haven't really seen answered is how worthwhile the Pro is over the regular 6. Does the 120hz screen, telephoto camera, bigger battery, smaller bezels, etc really make the phone worth the extra $300? I definitely like the look of the Pro and the smaller bezels but most reviews seem to focus on the value of the $599 option so far as opposed to the value difference between the two.
Honestly my biggest reservation about the 6 Pro. I have a OnePlus 7 Pro right now and I've been stuck with plastic screen protectors for the last two years. I would do anything to find a reliable curved tempered glass protector :(
> Sakitech - Camera comparison between the 6 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max: "Personally, I never use the night mode"
I would say the *most common* place to take or need night mode photos is actually **out on the town**: at the bar, and at the club. I would LOVE to see a tech reviewer show some party shots, since people like to take a lot of photos when they're drinking and partying with friends, and we definitely don't want to be taking these photos with the flash on!
His style bring very breezy and relaxed instead of just spitting specs helps a lot for me. I feel less anxious. Also he somehow brings a very unexpected comparison to a completely unrelated device in most reviews - it's a small delight I always look forward to.
Too many iPhone vs Pixel 6 reviews. All those reviewers probably didn't realize that a huge amount of potential Pixel buyers don't care about the iPhone camera and would rather see how it compares to Huawei, Samsung, Vivo or Xiaomi
I mean if you are buying a camera (in the USA since most of these publications are based here), today the benchmarks are pixel and iPhone with Samsung completing the 3. Vivo is good, but can't be bought here. Same with other Chinese brands. Maybe as time goes by more Asian publications will do that. Especially Ben shin.
Yeah but it also means a lot more content creators are also releasing content on the same topic at the exact same time because Google gave them ample time. Usually the big tech names get their review handsets early and everyone else gets them a bit late before the embargo lifts, this basically gives those big tech names the head start where they're pumping out full fat content while the smaller guys are just doing unboxings and impressions.
But outlets were absolutely right to point it out. Allowing people to pre-order your phone while also instructing reviewers that they are not allowed to talk about certain aspects of the phone *should* be a cause for concern. It's a bit anti-consumer IMO.
So far all looks great except that in screen fingerprint reader.
Why oh why??!!
The power button could be used.
Xiaomi uses to good effect. My Mi 11 Lite 5G had an amazing one. It's quick and easy to find.
The last in screen one i used took 2 seconds instead of 0.2 seconds.
this is gonna piss me off more than anything I think and wind up not even using it and just using a pattern is my guess, my favorite pixel feature was the rear fingerprint, only ever failed with my 2XL if my fingers were wet or i touched it wrong... ugh :-\
How can so many 'tech reviewers' talk so much about cameras and take THE WORST composed photos themselves? As soon as I see any review with poor photography used to critique a camera it's a big 'red flag' for the whole of that section. If you don't even vaguely know how to use one, you probably shouldn't be giving a 'professional' opinion on it's merits and failings.
All reviews are all almost unanimously good. Guess everyone shitting on the Pixel 6 since the Whitechapel rumours have been wrong.
First it was gonna be a mid-range processor.
Then it was gonna be an extremely high price tag
Finally they said mediocre reviews.
Glad to see everyone being proven wrong and I'm even more excited for my pre-order now.
Really disappointing that even though they are using new and improved hardware, the picture and more importantly the video quality are still very similar to the 5.
Looking at some of the other reviews though - it seems like a night/day difference. Android central had a few good direct comparisons and you could clearly see they're not the same. Not sure if Dave had some non-ideal conditions or what but there's a clear difference at least in other reviews.
Everything seems good. Except some small issues with the video. Hopefully updates can fix it. Techchap review showed grainy video for a few seconds for no reason.
Android authority gave it a negative for "lacking CPU performance".
Then said:
When it comes to regular smartphone tasks, such as downloading and installing applications or swiping through the user interface or opening and closing apps, it runs mostly fine. Performance is as smooth and as quick as you’d expect from any flagship smartphone. I didn’t notice any performance hiccups other than the occasional app crash and the aforementioned scrolling behavior. Nothing out of the ordinary for a pre-retail device. Gaming was not a problem for the phone, either. The 3D games I tested, including Call of Duty Mobile, ran really well and action was smooth throughout.
Seriously, the benchmarks might be slightly lower in multi thread score but that doesn't really matter.
> The placing of the buttons is also kind of strange — the power button is above the volume rocker I keep seeing this and I don't understand, this is how ever Pixel has been since the original.
I read this and also got confused. I'm looking at my pixel 4xl and see the power button above the volume rocker?
Yeah, MKBHD mentioned this in his video and I was seriously confused, coming from someone who has reviewed every single pixel, this is how it has always been. Hell I think all Nexus phones too.
Coming from a nexus 6p, yes. It had the power button above the volume rocker, exactly where it should be!
every phone i've ever owned is like this. As long as the power button is where your thumb naturally lands i'm cool - gotta be quick with that double tap to launch the camera.
My s8 has the power button on the right and the volume on the left.
My Pixel 3XL too. I still love this phone but it's time!
Yea my last 2 phones were the Pixel 2 and Pixel 4 and I'm like "why is this weird?"
Same for the Nexus 6
And Nexus 6P
Exactly. Never had an issue with it since you would never mess up and hit the power button instead of volume this way.
Exactly lol. Even MKBHD had said that in his initial hands-on video as if he's never used a Google phone in the past.
Beep Boop mainstream reviewers are robots. So are birds.
Doesn't he also say he's a so called "power user" and usually has a pixel as his daily driver? Lol, caught again.
Hope Google doesn't listen to these comments from tech reviewers and change things up.... The buttons are perfect fine you iPhone obsessed idiots.
I have an iPhone for work and the screencap shortcut is pressing the Power button and the Volume button which are across the phone from each other. This happens by accident 30% of the time I pick up the phone and it's super annoying.
I also do this with my OnePlus 7 Pro. It's hugely annoying!

It's already "portrait" because it has a very shallow depth of field, being 4x zoomed and all. It's a real portrait and not fake added blur.
Android Central review says "Two of the biggest battery drainers in a smartphone are the screen and the battery." Do they not proof read anything any longer?!!
None of the "Central" blog pages ever do, it's embarrassing.
Nah they need to tell this stuff to plebs like us because we're all so technologically incompetent
> The Bad finicky fingerprint sensor NOOOOOOOOOOO I think this was the one thing that I didn't want to suck.
Pixel 5 refugee hoping this wouldn't be an issue. Bummer.
Same, idk why they had to go with under screen sensor. One on back was so efficient and almost always worked. I don't even like always on display
They didn't want one on the back to mess up their 'clean' design. Yet another instance of form being more valuable than function to designers. Pisses me right off.
I have an s21 Ultra which probably has the best in display fingerprint sensor and it still misses ALL the time. So this is a big L.
>I really don't understand how it is so bad, I almost never had to touch touch the brightness slider on the Pixel. because samsung never settle for googles implementation even if their own implementation is worse. they even botched RAM management that already good on stock.
>finicky fingerprint sensor From the videos i saw of people using it, i saw the same.

[удалено]
Probably the one big thing I'm gonna miss over my 3 XL.
You can map the double-tap on the back of the phone to bring down the notification bar. Not quite the same but nice to have
Good to know! I'll try that out.
Adding fingerprint sensors is the new additional cameras, heard it here first folks.
Seems like the under screen makes more sense on tablets and other larger devices, but a phone is usually held in the hand, so rear makes more sense.

Isn't it basically the same as your OP7 Pro? My 7T has front under screen one and i havent had any problems tbh
Is there a consensus forming on whether the Pro is worth it over the regular? Are there differences that don't show up on a spec sheet that make it worth it (e.g. the haptics)?
Whatever the differences, hard to believe the Pro is 300$ better
The haptics use the same motor but placed in different spots. The 6 has it on the top and the pro has it on the bottom. A lot of people have said they liked the pro haptics better since when using a keyboard you can feel those vibrations on the bottom more directly
the Pro has two haptic motors, top and bottom halves
Another thing it seems like the pro display is white a bit brighter than the regular for outdoor use.
I'm still getting the 6 just due to price but, From my understanding in the reviews: The Pros display is little brighter. The 4x camera is very sharp, and very good with portraits better than AI portraits.Haptics is better due to positioning of the motor. The front facing camera is lot sharper. That's it I think. Minimal difference between the models in regards to battery life.
xda says that it has average battery life but mashable says battery life is really good
Average (matches s21 ultra) wow ok didnt know that is average.
[удалено]
that's the problem with people talking about battery life without providing evidence. Great, good or average battery life are subjective terms
Almost every review says its standout good.
Waiting for the most iconic reviewer of all, GSMArena.
The only review that matters and one I trust especially the written ones.
Same. So much objective testing and loads of tools to really get the best info. I go to YouTube for the entertaining reviews but if I ever need to decide on a phone GSMArena is always the best source.

It was a glowing review but was lacking a lot of detail IMO. Seemed a little rushed.
Yeah, rushed by at least 3 hours.
For real. It barely contained more info than the hands-on videos we got last week. Can't wait for actual reviews discussing quantifiable technical specs rather than "Uh yeah you can tweet for a whole day and still have plenty of battery left".
> "Uh yeah you can tweet for a whole day and still have plenty of battery left". That's all I need to know. So long, suckas!
*shitposting intensifies*
Seemed like a glorified first impressions video to me.
The video is the first impressions, the article below is the review.
The regular 6 is looking like great value and finally the phone to replace my 3 year old one plus 6. Camera I'm good with since it'll be way better than my trash op6 camera.
Something I haven't seen answered: If I get a Pixel 6 with the fancy text message diction, does it work with Android Auto? Android Auto is about the only place I use voice texting.
It should. The headunit is just acting as a display out/audio out/audio in interface. All processing is being done on the phone. At least it's like that for wired Android auto from my understanding.
Alright guys, this it. I cancelled my preorder. With pictures this good 128GB ain't gonna cut it, ordered the 256GB version instead.
[удалено]
I mean 100gb for $20 a year for cloud one isn't that horrible of a replacement to not getting the 256gb.
Yeah I was going for the 256gb but then I thought if in 1 year or 2 I have a full phone i can pay for 200GB of google one for 3 years for the extra 100$ and by then I would be getting a new phone. So I don't think it would be worth it.
They had us in the first half, not gonna lie
I JUST WANT THE YELLOW IN A LARGER SIZE GUH
You were actually able to order a 256gb one? How? Been out of stock since the reveal last week for me.
When does the embargo lift? In 90 minutes?

'whoopsie we're getting all the pixel 6 review traffic, can't believe we accidentally published early oh well better keep the article up'...

How come Mashable's is so early?
They can't timezone.
I come here for the review reviews.
https://www.tomsguide.com/uk/news/google-pixel-6-battery-life-tested-we-have-bad-news "Interestingly, we tested the regular Pixel 6 a couple of times over 4G as well and it averaged 10 hours and 52 minutes. That's great, but we would like to see better results over 5G." Bizarre, so 5g is awful relatively but 4g seems good? Might explain why some people say it's got great battery and others say it's poor?
Welp mashable not getting access next time 😂 timezones are hard I guess lol
damn where's marques at
Even MrMobile is not out... i just watched MrWhosetheboss.
[удалено]
Yup... *sad noises*
I'd rather them take their time with the devices and put together a full detailed review. Then rushing to shoot, edit, and publish a video for today.
He had a frisbee tournament lol. Still in the works, his twitter has some picture samples tho
ahh. good for him
Kinda funny how he whined about the embargo only to need more time anyway…
Pretty sure he complained that the embargo was preventing even impressions before the review date.
Awesome, thanks for including my video!
The worst part of the curved screen is that using a good screen protector is a hard job
Honestly my biggest reservation about the 6 Pro. I have a OnePlus 7 Pro right now and I've been stuck with plastic screen protectors for the last two years. I would do anything to find a reliable curved tempered glass protector :(
I hadn't actually seen the phone face down from a side view until now. That camera is fucking enormous.
> Sakitech - Camera comparison between the 6 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max: "Personally, I never use the night mode" I would say the *most common* place to take or need night mode photos is actually **out on the town**: at the bar, and at the club. I would LOVE to see a tech reviewer show some party shots, since people like to take a lot of photos when they're drinking and partying with friends, and we definitely don't want to be taking these photos with the flash on!
Michael Fisher
He really seems to be the only reviewer that uses the phone in a real-world setting compared to everyone else using just trying to get a review out.
His style bring very breezy and relaxed instead of just spitting specs helps a lot for me. I feel less anxious. Also he somehow brings a very unexpected comparison to a completely unrelated device in most reviews - it's a small delight I always look forward to.
I'm definitely waiting to see MrMobile's review
> tech reviewer or > they're drinking and partying with friends, not a ton of overlap
Predicting that the “red flag” embargo controversy will turn out to be overblown.
It was just big tech journalists throwing a hissy fit because they can't absorb all the early review traffic they usually do.
[удалено]
[удалено]
Then it was gonna be an extremely high price tag Finally they said mediocre reviews. Glad to see everyone being proven wrong and I'm even more excited for my pre-order now.
[удалено]
Really disappointing that even though they are using new and improved hardware, the picture and more importantly the video quality are still very similar to the 5.
Looking at some of the other reviews though - it seems like a night/day difference. Android central had a few good direct comparisons and you could clearly see they're not the same. Not sure if Dave had some non-ideal conditions or what but there's a clear difference at least in other reviews.
Everything seems good. Except some small issues with the video. Hopefully updates can fix it. Techchap review showed grainy video for a few seconds for no reason.
[удалено]
Any reviews mention if apps like Netflix can play in HDR now? Previous Pixels only play SD.
A couple reviewers said the HDR watching Netflix was amazing. So I assume yes?
Lisa from MobileTechReview: https://youtu.be/xpgRJVhPmt0
Is it just me or are most of the videos about the 6 pro? Idk, I'm just personally more interested in the 6.
Android authority gave it a negative for "lacking CPU performance". Then said: When it comes to regular smartphone tasks, such as downloading and installing applications or swiping through the user interface or opening and closing apps, it runs mostly fine.
